Illus. in full color. Chock-full of information about the most sensitive, intelligent, and friendly of large aquatic creatures, Dolphins! should fare swimmingly with kids who read about whales and sharks.
A and I picked this out to read at bedtime since she likes dolphins. We learned a lot of different information that we never knew before, heck I didn't know half the information in the book. So this was a really good learning book for the both of us. As you read in this book you learn how they help fishermen and the Navy out. To the different kind of dolphins there are I only thought there were 3 different kinds. Nope, it seems there a lot more. We even get to learn how they can do tricks and different jobs along with being able to tell you information. If you enjoy learning about dolphins and learning about them in a fun way that isn't overwhelming with information, check out this book.
Elle read to us. Great book. Lot's of information written well so as to not overwhelm a young reader. Read this book to prepare for our field trip to the beach and butterfly habitat in Goleta..krb 2/1/16
This may even be a 2.5 stars. I realize it was written in 1993 and we were not as aware back then but whoa. Soooo many white people in the illustrations. We have also changed our language around people with special needs. Finally, our language around "mailmen" vs postal carrier, etc has also changed. Yikes.
I shared this with our self-contained SpEd class at the request of a student who wanted a book about dolphins. This was one of the few dolphin books available as an e-book that I could read in a library time visit. The factual information was good and that student was very happy but I was cringing on the inside as I shared it.
I've been reading random little books with my friend during school because we are at the end of the year. We have nothing to do, so today, we learned about dolphins. ;)
This book about Dolphins! is a very good book. I read it and it shares amazing facts about dolphins. They said that dolphins can do really cool tricks such as putting a frisbee inside of a basket. There are different kinds of dolphins in the world like the Bouto dolphin, Hourglass dolphin, Bottlenose dolphins, rissois dolphin and the common dolphin. Dolphins use echolocation to see in the dark. Dolphins send out sounds that can hit fish and echo back to the dolphin. Dolphins like helping their friends out when one of the members are hurt. Dolphins will work in groups to scare away sharks or other animals that try to attack their babies. Many fishermen trap dolphins in their fishing nets. Millions of dolphins have died because of fishermen. People are still working to keep dolphins safe in the sea. Scientists study dolphins up close. They built huge saltwater pools. Scientists study that many dolphins have different manners. Some are shy, some are show off, and some like to tease each other. Dolphins know how to shake people's hands, raise flags up high, ring bells, bat balls. Dolphins learn new tricks everyday and also know how to paint and pick their own colors. Dolphins can deliver mail to scientists in deep underwater labs. Dolphins can help children that can't see, walk, hear and have special problems. Dolphins and humans share one thing - special friendship.
Personal Reaction - This book did not disappoint. It was very informative and great way to learn about dolphins. We love dolphins and my girls just got to have a dolphin encounter at the Miami Sea Aquarium over the winter break while visiting friends in Florida. They learned a ton from from the live event but this book taught them so much more. My oldest daughter can get enough of these types of information books about the world we live in and the animals we share it with. There were some great stories of triumph and the bond between humans and dolphins - those of rescue and recovery and how dolphins can be great for children with disabilities. There were some sad details about how dolphins face trials caused by humans too. Purpose - 1st - 3rd grade read aloud or read to self This book would be a great informational book to read aloud during science lessons on mammals, ocean life, and during lessons on preservation and conservation. It would also be a great book to have on the self for students to read on their own. This book follows the traditional set up of informational books and might be a good choice in describing to children what these books look like, i.e. they have chapters, glossaries, etc.
Summary: Dolphins live in the water all their lives. . They are mammals just like us; they have a blowhole that allows them to breathe air. There are more than thirty kinds of dolphins around the world. I enjoyed reading this third grade level book. I liked the pictures and the connections to people. While reading the story I thought about how children might confuse dolphins with fish.
Literature Terms: Genre. This is a nonfiction book that explains the life and facts of dolphins. Even though the book has a lot of fact as I said before, it is interesting and students will find it enjoyable to read.
Activity: After reading the book I can have students create a poster about the day in the life of a dolphin, What do they eat? What do they swim like? After I can have them presented to their class.
This is a primary book for children interested in learning about dolphins. This book has a story line about the daily lives of dolphins along with questions that get answered right in the book. It also has diagrams and well colored realistic pictures that follow the story. It includes how dolphins breath, what they eat and how friendly dolphins are with people. The story goes on to talk about how dolphions help each other when they are sick and humans when they are trying to fish. We learn that dolphins are smart and can learn up to 40 words with a good memory. This was a good bed time story for my children that when i finnished they wanted to hear more and even though my baby just turned three he was able to answer a few questions about dolphins when i was done like "what do they eat?"
I have loved this book ever since I was very little, and it is one of the main books that got me initially interested in dolphins. It is great for children who are going up in reading levels, and especially for those who want to learn about dolphins.
The drawings in this book are fantastic, and very realistic looking in place of actual pictures. The book is super informative about everything dolphins do and are capable of, including Dolphin Assisted Therapy for children with disabilities, which is something that is rarely talked about but so beneficial.
I highly recommend this book to spark any child's interest in dolphins, or to read to work on their reading skills.
This is a great early reader book about dolphins. The book gives a story, history, detailed science, explores the use and abuse of dolphins and their place in the world. A great book and probably very appropriate for the stage 3 reader. My daughter aged 4 wanted this read to her at bedtime and I had to skip over the dolphin slaughter pages. I look forward to reading this again with her on may occasions though and eventually exploring the darker side of the ocean. Great presentation and pictures.
This non-fiction book can be utilized during lessons on things that live in the sea. It provides facts about dolphins. The pictures are colorful and would attract the attention of young readers. Some students may have been to the Aquarium, Sea World or other places in which they have encountered dolphins. Students can write about their experiences with dolphins. If students have not had any experiences, they can produce an informational writing from the information they gathered from the book.
I learned so much about dolphins from this book. I would recommend this book to 1st and 2nd graders. This book has so many cool facts about dolphins as I was reading I Found myself saying wow the whole time. This book could also be used to teach craft. In this book the author talks to te audience by asking questions. Then would answer the question
This book jumps right into the bond humans have with dolphins on the first page recounting the story of a dolphin that saves a woman's life. It goes on to describe many things we have been able to train them to do for us. I am glad to hear that they are capable of being not only showman but also shy and timid depending on their own personality just like us!
This is an interesting book about dolphins. Filled with anecdotes and basic scientific information about dolphins, it is still simple enough to entertain childen. The illustrations are pretty good, although the pictures of the dolphins are better than the people. Entertaining for grades K-2
DOLPHINS! Dolphins is a good book. What I like about the book Dolphins is that they tell you how many different kinds of dolphins there are. I also like how they tell us what the dolphins could do. That's why I like this book.
This is an informative book about Dolphins. It informs the reader on the various kind, how they are classified and why. I would use this book in a lesson when discussing variations of animals, classifying them, and also as a writing exercising.
My 8 year old does not like to read and gets frustrated easily. This book was at his level and kept him interested. He seems to prefer non-fiction. He read this book from beginning to end without interruption.
