Living Simply Through the Day: Spiritual Survival in a Complex Age

Rate this book
Noted author Tilden Edwards was inspired by his experience with a Tibetan lama to find new meaning in Christian classics. The result became a classic in itself, one of the first books not only to advocate "living simply" but also to incorporate Buddhist philosophy and practice into daily life. Twenty years later, Edwards has revised nearly half the work to reflect his new insights, while keeping the same structure and style as the original. Here are ways to get past anxiety to a simplicity that can free the heart. Practices are introduced for the many dimensions of daily waking, praying relating, serving, eating, playing; aching and sleeping. The book also provides suggestions for cultivating loving detachment, developing attentiveness and weaving discipline and spontaneous prayer.

I haven't read this book in a long time, but I felt living through the corona virus era, that I might find some good pointers to keep me from feeling "down" over this reoccurring illness that has so changed our lives. It's still going to be a long time before the vaccine is given to millions of people, so we must continue to wash hands, wear a mask, and keep socially distant. All of Tilden Edwards' suggestions for living simply daily are easy to follow if you are committed to be being "present" to life as it is. No more and no less. Breathing, praying, playing, and serving others are just some of the ways to stay committed to keep spiritual alive.

I am rereading this book that I read about 10 years ago. Great reminders of being attentive to the moment, working toward a more simple lifestyle, and having gratitude for everything that happens during the day.

This book provided a good overview of how to live with more mindfulness in an alotted 24-hour span. I enjoyed the authors' introductory remarks about his spiritual explorations in California; I would have enjoyed reading more about that period, although it was parenthetical to the books' thrust.
