Janet Pope has memorized an amazing 90 chapters of the Bible, including 11 New Testament books. In His Word in My Heart, she enthusiastically shares with readers why memorizing Scripture is so important to the walk of the believer.
Janet Pope has memorized over 16 books of the Bible, and she speaks to audiences from the overflow of God's Word stored within her. She is a 2011 graduate of Dallas Theological Seminary (Masters in Theology). Perpetual student, enthusiastic teacher, writer, blogger, wife, mother, grandmother, lover of God, and promoter of his Word, the Bible.
Practical and helpful! Left me wanting to meditate on God’s word for all the days of my life.
“Knowing the Bible is not our ultimate aim. The goal is to know God. He alone can bind up our wounds, make sense of our lives, and equip us to live out our calling on this earth.”
I love how she approaches the topic of scripture memory not from a place of legalism, but from a desire to know God more. She talks a lot about how meditating on truth can benefit our mental health greatly. Really enjoyed this and excited to try her methods !
“God’s Word must be central in all that we are, all that we do, and all that we think about. We must do whatever it takes to keep God foremost in our lives.” p.28
“His Word in my Heart” by Janet Pope is written in a relatable and story-telling style. The author explains her own testimony of coming to know God in salvation and how she is growing to know him more through memorizing Scripture—she’s memorized over 140 chapters!
One thing that really stood out was her motivation for memorization being love for God. The author’s love for God is clear throughout the book and inspiring! The more you know him, the more you will love him! She calls out Christian women today who feel that they have no time to invest in Bible memorization and makes the connection from that to how many women find themselves stressed, selfish and thinking along with the world’s philosophies. She drives this home with a study of Psalm 1 and the charge to embrace the God of the Bible rather than the god in our own minds.
With this foundation she gives practical guidance on how to change the way you spend your time so that you can learn to know God more and walk closely with him. Instead of waiting for an idealistic hours-long, uninterrupted quiet times, Pope explains how to train yourself to recognize pockets of time in the day that you can fill with God’s Word.
Big sections of the book are actual daily walk-throughs to help the reader memorize Psalm 1 and the book of Titus. Near the end of the book she gives strategies for memorization and reviewing passages so you don’t forget them. One specific thing I appreciated is how she writes that many Christians only choose favorite or “relevant” passages to memorize and states—“All Scripture is God-breathed, and no portion is irrelevant.” (p. 60) She says this comes out in her teaching opportunities on this topic where people act like she is a extra-credit Christian for being passionate about Bible memory and don’t think they could ever do the same. This book drives home the big difference it makes in a person to delight in God and his word, meditating on it all the day!
Such a great read gifted by Morgan’s grandmother, Ruby.
This book speaks to the importance of memorizing scripture and filling one’s mind with the thoughts of God. She gives tips for scripture memory and challenges one to deeper intimacy with Christ through scripture. I will remember the insightful words Janet writes for years to come.
This book has really challenged me to meditate on the word through the memorization of chapters and books instead of individual verses. I was really encouraged by Janet’s testimony.
There's a lot of truth in this book and I really appreciate Pope acknowledging that memorization isn't everything. She clearly has a love for God and His word, and that's very encouraging.
"The Bible does not command us to memorize Scripture... Spending quality time in God's Word leads us to a greater knowledge of God, and memorizing is one productive way to achieve that. The goal of memorizing should not be confused with the ultimate goal of knowing God and loving Him." (p 27)
The book itself is a quick read (apart from the memorization exercises), but I still felt it could have been condensed. It was a bit repetitive here and there. But, it's a worthwhile read that will encourage and challenge those who read it - if not to memorize Scripture, then at least to regularly read and meditate on it!
"As God renews our minds with Scripture, we begin to think biblically so that we can live biblically. Thinking biblically presupposes Bible knowledge. Without it you have no filter, and nothing to weigh your options against. You cannot come up with God's perspective without understanding God's thoughts expressed in His Word." (p 122)
I think it would be most beneficial for use in a small group.
As someone who has been on my own progress of memorizing books of the Bible, I can identify with so much of her emotional journey. She gives a lot of good tips for memorizing as well. She shares her method so that you can adapt it as needed.
Such a simple little book but over and over again she reminds the reader that we have little snippets of time all through the day that we could use to meditate and memorize God’s word. Great book, practical and contemplative, a little dated but I think she has a newer version out.
This is my second time reading His Word in My Heart. When I was first introduced to the book, I had already been memorizing chapters of the Bible for a couple of years but I was burned out and feeling discouraged. Then I read Janet Pope’s book and my fire was renewed. This second time through has been just as encouraging and has given me a new focus on how I review previously learned chapters!
If you’ve never memorized a chapter of scripture, Janet walks you step by step in how to memorize Psalm 1 and the book of Titus. Give it a try. I promise you won’t be disappointed!
In "His Word in My Heart", Mrs Pope introduces us to a effective method for memorizing and meditating on scripture.
She did lose me a bit when she almost seems to say that doing anything during your "down time" - such as crossword puzzles, reading, or listening to music - is a waste of time when you should be focused solely on Scripture. I believe her point was more that if you think you don't have time for memorization, but have time in your day for those other things that you could reprioritize. But still... in my opinion it came across a little heavy and off-putting.
Over all though, I enjoyed the book and found it informative and helpful. I have used her method, going at my own pace and have already memorized Psalm 1 in its entirety.
I recently read a book titled "His Word in my Heart" by Janet Pope. It is about learning scripture in a way the helps to maintain what you memorize.
I see extra bonuses in her technique. Learning the way she described could be used for many things including poetry, song lyrics, even math etc. I intend to learn more scripture.
Another bonus is she helped me recognize I have more time for memorizing and meditating than I thought. If you do laundry, cook, run errands, clean house, use the restroom any number of things we may see as mundane you can learn how memorize whatever you'd like.
She also teaches how to not lose what you've memorized. Its been several weeks since I learned Psalm 100.
I'd recommend this book if you're wanting to learn more techniques on memorization.
Janet Pope explains the benefits of memorizing Scripture and tells stories of how her personal memorization has transformed her life and strengthened her walk with Christ! She encourages readers to start by memorizing Psalm 1, then encourages them to memorize the book of Titus. She gives practical tips to do these things. I have seen only benefits after memorizing both Psalm 1 and Titus and I’m spurred on the memorize more chapters/books of the Bible. I have not only gained a better understanding of these chapters, but a better understanding of God and how I am call to walk with Him!
This book was very helpful in giving me a passion for Scripture memory. I’ve not memorized huge portions of Scripture since high school, and memorizing the book of Titus was so refreshing. This book helps you learn how and why to memorize, while also giving a plan for memorizing Psalm 1 and Titus. I did it with a small group study and it outlines how to do that in the back. Would highly recommend to help you take your relationship with God even further.
Oh my goodness... this book is one of my new favorites!! This book is so down to earth, practical and also very, very inspiring!! Janet's love of God is extremely evident and contagious....I can't wait to begin my journey of memorizing God's Word - drawing closer to Christ and being renewed by His living and active truths! Highly recommend!
Though it’s not a book on motherhood, I found it much more helpful than those mom books in motivating me to love God and His word. Her example showed me that a mom of young kids is never to busy to memorize and meditate upon God’s word. A friend recommended this book upon hearing that I was memorizing Philippians and it’s been a wonderful encouragement to keep me going!
Excellent +! Inspired me to memorize Psalm 1 and now about halfway through Philippians 1. So much wisdom regarding why to memorize Scripture, and how it changes the heart and mind, drawing us closer to God. Every Christian should read this smallish book so that, along with daily Bible study, the Word will “wash us” and transform us.
Janet gives helpful and tangible tips from her own experience on how to hide God's Word in your heart. Inspiring and motivational, this book will leave you wanting to soak in God's Word and try out her system for yourself!
Yes! We can memorize scripture. No matter your season of life the Bible has been given to us so that we can KNOW our God and Saviour. This book offers a doable method and inspiration to get you going.
It was so good and encouraging to read this book, I was looking for some voice to tell me that it is never too late to sit down and study the word of God by first memorising the scripture verses. Thank you, Janet, for this delightful read !!!
I was looking for a book with some practical tips for memorizing scripture when I came across this gem. It went way beyond tips and truly ignited a passion for memorizing God's Word! It is an easy and encouraging read and I would highly recommend it to any follower of Christ!
Really encouraging and practical little book about scripture memory. I am thankful for this author’s testimony and the encouragement and perspective she offers about the value of truly meditating on God’s Word day and night
This book really inspired me to memorize and meditate on bigger passages of scripture. The author also gives practical step by step instructions for what works for her to memorize and then move your memory work into long term memory.
Pope inspires the reader to memorize,so that we can worship God, learn about His character, know His will, resist temptation, and be of service to God. Well written, and easy to follow. I'm so glad I read this book!
I love how she gives you a doable action plan for Psalm 1 and the Book of Titus. Very enjoyable and encouraging to read. Available to check out free from archive.Org
