This is a great read if you would like to understand Dana's role with Grant out west, especially the Vicksburg Campaign. It also shows a bit of Lincoln's evolution of how to ensure that his military subordinates are staying true to his policy/strategy goals (and to ensure that they staff off the bottle). This seems to be part of a learning process that started with Mac in the eastern theater.
