Temptations Men Face: Straightforward Talk on Power, Money, Affairs, Perfectionism, Insensitivity

Rate this book
Like a rushing current in a dark river, temptations flood all around us. Every believer has felt the undertow. And some, even some prominent Christian leaders, ave not been able to keep their heads above the water. How can a man stand against these forces? How do men experience common temptations, and what can be done about them? Tom Eisenman gives us a man's perspective on these and other tough issues. In straightforward language he honestly discusses the difficulties he and others have had in avoiding common stumbling blocks in the Christian walk. More than that, in a personal and practical way he shows how deliverance is possible even from besetting sins. He doesn't stop there. In a chapter for women he tells how they can assist their husbands and suggests what to do when a man resists help. Finally, Eisenman offers general strategies for all of us on how to oppose temptations and find freedom from the evil that binds us.

This is a great, thought-provoking and eye-opening book on the daily struggles we face as men. The author, Tom Eisenman, who is also a pastor, never talks "at" you, or "down" to you in this book. In the various categories addressed here, Eisenman writes from a place of honesty and vulnerability, sharing some of his own experiences and challenges. He backs up much of his advice and solutions with biblical truth, and a couple of chapters are solely devoted to the importance and necessity of one's relationship with God if he is to overcome these challenges. It never feels too preachy (at least from my perspective as a Christian), but he is firm in his beliefs of God's role in our life, and more specifically, His role in our growth as we learn to abandon our worldly ways - and I appreciated this unapologetic approach in his writing.

Not all of the chapters in here applied to me, but I found at least some helpful truth in most. Eisenman thoroughly covers topics such as Greed, Lust, Perfectionism, Pride, - and who knows, maybe you'll discover something you struggle with that you didn't even know you struggled with! I know I did.
This is the kind of book I would recommend to those who want to become a better version of themselves and not be enslaved by worldly desires and sin. While this book is primarily directed at men, I think anyone could benefit from it - and there is even a chapter in here addressed to women.
Again, not everything in this book was applicable for me, and there were a couple of times I thought this book was just a tad longer than it needed to be... but overall it helped me to see some things with a different perspective. If you go into it with an open mind and honest heart, I think it may do the same for you. Even if you're not a fellow Christian, I think there could be some knowledge to be gained here.

Ok so far, don't agree with everything the author says but still a good book about the difficult situations christian men deal with.
