Kate and Vincent have overcome the odds and at last they are together in Paris, the city of lights and love.
As their romance deepens there’s one question they can’t ignore: How are they supposed to be together if Vincent can’t resist sacrificing himself to save others? Although Vincent promises that he’ll do whatever it takes to lead a normal life with Kate, will that mean letting innocent people die? When a new and surprising enemy reveals itself, Kate realizes that even more may be at stake—and that Vincent’s immortality is in jeopardy.
In Die for Me, Amy Plum created a captivating paranormal mythology with immortal revenants and a lush Paris setting. Until I Die is poised to thrill readers with more heart-pounding suspense, spellbinding romance, and a cliff-hanger ending that will leave them desperate for the third and final novel in the series.
Amy Plum is the international bestselling author of the DIE FOR ME series (Indie Next List pick, Romance Times top pick, and recipient of a starred review from School Library Journal). The books have been translated into thirteen foreign languages. The trilogy is accompanied by three novellas entitled DIE FOR HER, DIE ONCE MORE, TO DIE FOR and a compendium entitled INSIDE THE WORLD OF DIE FOR ME.
In DREAMFALL and NEVERWAKE a radical experiment to cure chronic insomnia goes wrong, and its seven teenage test subjects are plunged into a shared coma populated by one another’s nightmares; those who die in the dream will also die in real life.
Amy's action/adventure/magic duology, AFTER THE END and UNTIL THE BEGINNING, received starred reviews from Publishers Weekly, 4 1/2 stars from RT Book Reviews, and enthusiastic reviews from Kirkus, USA Today, ALA Booklist and School Library Journal.
After being raised in Birmingham, Alabama, in a rather restrictive environment, AMY PLUM escaped to Chicago to an even more restrictive environment at a university that expelled people for dancing. (And where she was called to the dean’s office for “wearing too much black”.) After all of that restrictiveness, she was forced to run far far away, specifically to Paris, France, where she only wore black and danced all she wanted.
After five years in Paris, she ventured to London, where she got an M.A. in Medieval Art History, specializing in Early Sienese Painting (1260-1348) mainly because it promised almost no hope of finding a paying job afterward.
Amy managed to find work in the world of art and antiques in New York. But after almost a decade of high-pressure lifestyle in the Big Apple, she swapped her American city for a French village of 1300 inhabitants.
After signing with HarperCollins for the DIE FOR ME series, Amy left her job as an English professor at Tours University to write full-time. She now lives in Paris with her two kids and her black lab, Oberon.
She is a huge fan of Edward Gorey and Maira Kalman (and collects both of their books/art), as well as David Sedaris, Amadeo Modigliani, and Ira Glass.
Nothing makes me quite so happy as spending time with characters I love. I fully expected Until I Die to suffer from the middle book syndrome but, despite a few symptoms that were obviously present, Amy Plum managed to make the most of it. Of course it wasn’t as eventful as Die for Me, and I’m sure If I Should Die, the last book of the trilogy, will be much more exciting, but Until I Die was a satisfying read in every way.
The fact that I recognized the villain(s) right away and that I was able to see right through their schemes didn’t detract from my enjoyment of the book. I don’t read this for the mystery, I read it for the setting and the fabulous characters I’ve come to see as friends. I’m not just talking about Kate and Vincent here, the entire group of revenants is very dear and familiar to me, I feel like I’ve known them all for ages. I missed Charlotte a lot in this book, she was always one of my favorites, but I understand why she had to leave and I had Jules to distract me (and make me laugh) with his womanizing ways.
I hate it when a huge part of the plot is built on lack of communication between partners. Most of the problems Kate and Vincent found themselves in could have been easily avoided. All Vincent needed to do was tell the truth instead of constantly asking Kate to trust him and let him handle things. Even though he was just trying to spare her feelings and avoid shocking her further with grim facts of his existence, I thought it was condescending and just a touch stupid, especially because she handled everything he threw at her so well before.
On the other hand, a part of me is glad that Vincent has a flaw I can rant about. Everything else about him is just so perfect and he and Kate are one of the sweetest couples in YA literature, at least to me. I love that they never doubt each other and that they always consider each other’s feelings, even when it requires sacrifice. Their relationship is very mature and healthy, and the big moment they had in this book was handled elegantly.
The fact that I pointed out a few negatives doesn’t mean I didn’t enjoy the book. In fact, I remain a huge fan of this trilogy and I truly don’t know how I’ll wait a whole year to find out what happens to Kate and my poor Vincent. (Did I just write ‘MY poor Vincent’?! Hah, yes, I suppose I did. Shut up, brain!) Hurry up, Amy Plum. I’ll be OLD by May 2013.

Until I Die, the second book in the Revenants series, is very much a middle book, but we do learn tons more about the Revenant lore in addition to greater character development. And of course, we still have the beautiful Paris setting.
Oriented towards the Revenant lore, we're plunged deeper into their background and history in this sequel. I was very interested in Amy Plum's unique zombie lore from the beginning, so I was happy to get some more details on these unusual beings. Even though there is still some plot development included, the pacing hovers a bit on the slow side. However, if - like me- you enjoyed book 1 mostly for its characters and setting, you will not be disappointed. There is plenty of Paris presence, in which walks our well beloved characters.
Two of these beloved that shine in this novel are Jules and Georgia. I completely adore Jules. He is so sweet and every time he's present he fills the book with humor and charm. Considerably more involved in this book- Kate's sister, Georgia, also knows how to liven things up. She is simply a fun character - witty, spontaneous, and just plain buoyant. She has the confidence everyone wishes they had. I loved seeing more of her. She's also someone we can always count on and put our trust into no matter what. This sisterly bond is another part of the book that I adore. There are a couple of new interesting personalities that join the already superb cast: Arthur is cranky but surprisingly intriguing. And Violette is a lot of fun, outgoing, and charming when she wants to be.
Since I wasn't infatuated with the romantic plot in Die For Me, I was happy to find the romance was a tad more passionate in this second novel. Where the previous book left me underwhelmed, Until I Die made me see how, even though it's not an all-consuming, lust-filled romance, the love for each other is definitely present. Their desperation fills the pages, but with an air of maturity. Almost as if they've together for years already. Add a Parisian setting to the mix, and we've got an enchanting love story.
An utterly shocking ending will make you long for the final book. It's not every author who would dare go the route Amy went; I love how she's not afraid to make things happen. This is not a fairy tale! For this reason though, I can see how some may not be to happy with it, nonetheless I thought it was an amazingly heartfelt, passionate ending that brings a lot of emotions to the surface. As a middle book, Until I Die is clearly a set up for the finale, but it's still a great addition to the series that gives us plenty of development as far as character and world building. Book 3 - If I Should Die - promises to be heartbreaking and thoroughly intense.

This was a good sequel, although it did leave us with a cliff-hanger ending.
I liked Kate and Vincent in this, and it was nice that they were able to work past the whole revenant thing, and be together as a couple anyway.
The storyline in this was about Vincent and Kate both looking for other ways for Vincent to not die, and we had some new characters in the story as well. We also had news of a champion, and further problems with the numa.
The ending to this was quite action-packed, although we were left with a cliff-hanger right at the end.
I'm sorry, but this book was just plain boring. It was more than halfway through the book before we saw any action. Even then, it was really short-lived. We don't see any action again until near the end. And the villain was too predictable - partly because the book was so uneventful, and I never trusted the villain even from the start because the villain was too perfect. So yeah, I didn't really care for the story here.
As for Vincent and Kate, their relationship was really boring. I know, I know. It's nice to see a sequel without the introduction of a love triangle, but still, their relationship was uneventful, and even though they are really lovey dovey, I didn't really feel any kind of a spark.
The only exciting part of their relationship was Kate's problem with what Vincent does and that he is JB's second. But I was put off about how childish and overdramatic she was about that. I know it's a problem, but I guess it was just the way it was written. Whereas with some characters, I can sympathize with their hard situation, with Kate, I just wanted to shake her and tell her to get over it already.
Really, the only thing I really liked about the book was Jules. I think he's a great character, and I love his easy-going attitude and his charm, as well as his loyalty.
Die For Me was an unexpectedly good ride for me. I gave it two stars at the time, but eventually it crept up to 3.5, just because it reminds me of this really weird sesame cookie I tried lately that tasted weird, and that I should have hated, but actually ended up really liking. Is that an awful metaphor? Meh, probably. But it's really late and I'm super hungry.
Until I Die teeters on a sharp precipice, swaying to and fro between my love and my...mild dislike. I don't hate anything about these books. How can you hate them? There's not enough substance to hate. It's just Kate wandering from mishap to mishap, and that's kind of a summary of both books, and likely the last one too (which I intend to read. Oh, don't you worry about that!).
My main problem with this series is that I don't care at all about the love story, mostly because Vincent, to me, is like a big slice of walking cardboard. Like a dry shard of shortcrust pastry. It's not that he's a bad guy - in fact, he's pretty nice. He's just bland. So, so bland. I feel bad for him, he's so bland.
And even the side characters aren't that interesting, except for Gaspard, who I love, and Violette . Ironically, it's the je ne sais quoi that this whole series lacks. Shame, since the mythology is really interesting and unique (despite the info-dumps it's delivered in).
Again, I suppose it's another YA romance that could be solved quite simply: the heroine walking away. Kate, walk away. Seriously. A dude you've known for perhaps three months can't possibly monopolize your life so ferociously that you're willing to lay down your life for a few short years with him. Kate can't just let it lie, though, can she? The solution, then, is to just suck it up and make it work, just be the aging one in the couple. You can't fight time and you can't ask your partner to injure themselves for your benefit.
It's a pretty straightforward ultimatum: do the Genevieve and Phillipe thing, or walk away from this relationship. You can't possibly expect this to be easy.
It was this that ran through my head the whole time I was reading, that all of this was more painful and more trouble than it was worth. And it seems tragic for this seventeen year old girl to be thinking of how many years of her life she has left, to be mapping out her entire existence around a boyfriend she barely knows. I don't even know why I'm bothering to debate this anymore, since it's a class A YA trope. We've seen it a thousand times over: the world shifts for our love, there's nothing more important than you and me, our love is worth agonizing, spine-snapping pain, a few picnics in the park mean that we're destined to be together forever. While there are subversive moments - i.e. Kate acknowledging this new obsession with age and questioning whether she and Vincent even have a future, all of it's nullified with her actions. And that's a shame, really.
All I can really say is that this book was fine. It wasn't what it could have been, for what it could have been was epic. But it was written in a sort of low-lying, low-key, slow moving way that tore the urgency and passion out of the story. There's no fire here. It's more like a lump of cigarette ash.
So, I quite liked Die for Me. I thought it was sweet and fun and gently subversive. Until I Die, on the other hand, is a mess. The thing is, I feel a little guilty for complaining, because it seems like Amy Plum's trying to infuse all of the 'good romance' bits into her story, but somehow it's not working. There's a lot of telling about how Kate is whole without Vincent, but he completes her, etc, etc, but that's all it is - telling. The showing is all about them kissing and cuddling and kissing some more and Kate being all sad that she's only a blip in his immortal lifespan. I got a little sick of the drippyness of it all, honestly.
The biggest problem with this book is that it took forever to get going. Nothing central to the plot happened until the last fifty pages or so. The rest of the book was a bunch of unconnected events, way too many descriptions of Parisian monuments, too much relationship development (I never thought I'd hear that come out of my mouth!) and Vincent being mysterious with Kate. Whatever. The only reason this book gets three stars from me is because I may have been a little unfair to it, trying to juggle between languid jobhunting and frantic blogging and obsessive tweeting.
I felt like despite the big, bright spotlight shining on their relationship, Vincent and Kate didn't have the chemistry they did in the first book. This is a problem I've noticed with quite a few books that progress into series. It's as if, once the protagonists have gotten together, the author doesn't quite know what to do with them. And the other, EXCESSIVELY ANNOYING thing is this new trend of writing the first book as a stand-alone, and ending the second one on a cliffhanger. Yes, debut author, I know your book got converted to a series, and I'm happy for you, but how about... *gasp* three standalones? Now there's an innovative idea for you!
And the thing is, I DID enjoy where the story was going, once it finally kicked off, but then it just... ended, and it felt like most of this book was pointless, and the author could have just grafted the last few chapters onto the third book and not bothered writing this one at all. I'll read the final installment, sure, but only because I've gotten this far and want to see how it all ends. I feel like this is a very lackadaisical review, but that's cause the book left me overall with an overwhelming feeling of meh. I'm not going to be running out recommending this one to people. (Sorry, Maja!)
In the first novel, Die For Me, it was the romantic Paris setting and idea of revenants — undead beings with the compulsion to die to save others — that captivated me. The idea was completely unique and executed with perfection, but even though I loved the characters with all my heart, I was never really sold on the romance.
But in Until I Die, somehow Amy Plum managed to make everything more intense, more lovable, more breathtaking — even the romance! Kate and Vincent have to be the perfect couple. I don't mean that their relationship is without its complications (because having an undead boyfriend definitely isn't), but I can finally see how they fit so well together. Their banter and interactions are funny and sweet, and being set in Paris, I was constantly swooning off my feet!
The middle of the book is admittedly a little slower as Kate tries to find out how to help Vincent resist his compulsion to sacrifice himself to save others. But that is my only complaint!
Otherwise, I loved every second I could spend with my favourite characters again! From sweet and stubborn Kate to Vincent (the perfect dream boyfriend ♥) to Jules (my favourite playboy of all time — without making this a love triangle!) as well as all of the other awesome revenants, both new and old, they were always a blast to read about.
Beautifully written and ending with one of the most heart-pounding, heart-breaking, and heart-tearing conclusions ever, Until I Die is an unpredictable and captivating installment to a trilogy that is quickly becoming one of my favourites. Amy Plum has made a total fangirl out of me! :)
BUY or BORROW?: I'd recommend that you buy this even if you haven't read the first book yet! That just means you have to backtrack to the first one beforehand, which you should be doing anyways ;)
He raised his hand, and running his fingers from my temples through my hair, he spoke softly. "Now that you are here -- now that we're together -- I can't imagine going back to the life I had before. I don't know what I'd do if I lost you now. I love you too much."
My throat constricted. He had said the magical three words. Out loud. When he registered my stunned expression, his lips curled up at the corners. "But you knew that already, didn't you?"
My heart became a gooey mess inside my chest, and then he said it again.
After the not so impressive Die for Me, I wasn't expecting much and rightfully so because nothing happens in this book for the most part. Kate is her immature self, Vincent is being secretive and I couldn't care less why and the bad guy could be seen from miles away.
There was no plot in this book. They kept on circling around the same thing they did in the first book. There was no action until the last few pages which was only to set for the next book in the series. Along with lack of plot, the writing felt very boring and non-gripping.
Seriously??? We've got to wait a WHOLE YEAR to find out what happens????!!!! I honestly don't think I can survive it!!
Yes, you guessed it... Until I Die ended on one heckuva cliffhanger... and I normally despise those dreaded things. I have always felt that if an author's writing is THAT good -- and Amy Plum's is THAT good -- they don't need one to entice the reader to come back. That was very true with Amy's first book, Die For Me. But that said, this was a GOOD cliffhanger -- if there is such a thing -- a real heart-breaker with a tinge of hope mixed in. So, I will forgive Amy this one time.
And so once again... this installment in the Revenants trilogy gets FIVE BRIGHT and SHINEY stars from me and is going to be shelved amongst my favourites!
The sequel to Die For Me did not disappoint one iota... in fact, I think I loved it even more. Everything I adored about the first book was turned up a notch in Until I Die. There was plenty of Kate and Vincent, plenty of romance, plenty of Paris, plenty of the other revenants (good and bad) and plenty more revenant lore to sink our teeth into -- all woven around another great plot that had me riveted!
Picking up where Die For Me left off, we get to witness Kate and Vincent's love story really take root. There is no shortage of toe-curling romance in this book. A little teaser to wet your appetite:
"He raised his hand, and running his fingers from my temples through my hair, he spoke softly. "Now that you are here--now that we're together--I can't imagine going back to the life I had before. I don't know what I'd do if I lost you now. I love you too much."
My throat constricted. He had said the magical three words. Out loud. When he registered my stunned expression, his lips curled up at the corners. "But you knew that already, didn't you?"
My heart became a goeey mess inside my chest, and then he said it again." -- p. 71 Until I Die (arc), Amy Plum
Vincent promised Kate to be an extraordinary boyfriend to make up for the extraordinary circumstances they face together, and he certainly holds nothing back. From winter picnics to a private box at the Belshoi Ballet to sword lessons to just hanging out. And through all of this, we really get to witness what an awesome pair these two make. Together... they can take on the world.
The problem is... when they go off and do things separately... that's when things go awry and they become more vulnerable. Each is looking for a solution to making it easier for Vincent to resist the urge to die at the hands of saving another life. He made that promise to her in the last book because Kate -- having such a difficult time with her own parent's death -- knew she couldn't handle Vincent dying over and over again. In this book, we learn much more about the mechanics of this compulsion they have to saving lives... it's more than just being noble.
So Vincent is going in one direction to solve this problem, while Kate goes in another for reasons you'll discover when you read this for yourself, as explaining it will give away too much. Both avenues they are taking are, of course, dangerous.
The numa seem to be regrouping but the revenants have no idea what they're up to, nor who is their new leader. It's very quiet for the longest time. Meanwhile, two new reventants join La Maison, Violette and Arthur. The centuries old, and seemingly aloof couple, change things up quite a lot.
I loved getting to know more about the revenants through stories shared. But you can't help but catch the ominous foreshadowing undertones in those stories. Genevieve's story in particular...
Another thing I loved about this book is getting more Jules and Ambrose. I 'heart' those two. Jules continues his flirty ways with Kate... and how... and always just shy of crossing the line. I almost feel sorry for him because he truly is a sweetheart. Not that he would ever dream of taking Kate away from Vincent (well... maybe he might daydream just a little about such a prospect). And Ambrose... has taken on Kate's big brotherly/bodyguard duties with lots of charm and humour. I adore these two best friends of Vincent's.
Kate's socializing/boy-crazy sister Georgia continues to provide the lighter, more humourous moments. She's quick-witted but has a serious side to her too... and as always, is there for Kate, as are also Mamie and Papy.
We also get to see different sides of both Jean-Baptiste and Gaspard... both of which are so well written! The whole revenant clan really does feel more like family in this book and while some of them still have some insecurities where Kate is concerned, they respect Vincent's choice and abide by it.
Another great addition to the story is Vincent's developing role in this clan and possibly in reventant lore and prophecy. Ooohh... wait till you take that in!
And finally Kate and Vincent. Because they really are so much better as a team, it's hard to talk about them separately. Kate sort of feels like she's straddling two completely different worlds and not entirely fitting into either... but Vincent is helping her work through that. I love that Kate remains independent and thinks for herself despite how good she is with Vincent. She's still thoughtful, insightful and smart. She's developing a tough outer shell through the confidence Vincent has in her and in teaching her how to fight. In Jules's words... "she's kick-ass".
Vincent still remains the chivalrous and charming revenant that we instantly fell in love with in the previous book... and more so. With a much larger presence in this installment, we get to see what Kate really loves about him. Yes, he speaks and acts like he's from a different time -- and that rubs some people the wrong way -- but not with me -- I can easily melt into a puddle of goo with Vincent's words to Kate and the way he looks at her. Vincent's got a gentle and loving side but watch out when he's protecting Kate or his kindred... he's a force, let me tell you. He's definitely one of my favourite leading men... and I simply cannot resist a guy wielding a sword!
Even though, typically, middle books are painful to get through, what I found pleasantly surprising is that this isn't the case for most of this middle book. Yes, the blasted cliffhanger at the end was a real humdinger but Until I Die was seriously one awesome book!!! Amy Plum's eloquent writing style flowed like water over river rocks. It was incredibly hard to put down when life got in the way... and I couldn't wait to get back to it. Amy expertly places the events in and around Paris, making me long to go there. She cleverly merged more great revenant lore and mythology into one swoon-worthy love story with an intriguing and suspenseful plot line. Did I mention there was a stinker of a cliffhanger?? Oh yes... I did... it's going to be a looooong year!
And a special thank you to fellow Lark, Andrea, for sharing this ARC with me! I'm forever indebted! :)
I am completely head over heals for this series! The world of Revenants has both fascinated and intrigued me. I now wish that I lived in a world with hot undead guys.
In Die For Me, Kate meets Vincent and finds out his most terrifying secret. He is a Revenant - an undead with the duty to help people and die for them. In Until I Die, Kate and Vincent are trying to find a way of being together without Vincent's urge to die for someone. Vincent has to make sacrifices and Kate has to go behind his back to find out information to help him. Can the two really be together? While one grows old and dies, the other has to live for eternity saving those in need.
Before I go on I must say, that is one hell of a cover! Once I held a copy in my hands all I could do was stare in awe. Yes, the beauty does seep into the book and Amy Plum does deliver the sequel we have all been hoping for. In this book, I felt a lot of pain and confusion from the characters. While Vincent is trying to find a way to be with Kate without dying, he also collects a number of dark bruises over his body. Yes, all girlfriends would be worried, right? Kate is feeling that worry and does so much research I thought her head might explode.
The book is packed full of action, mysteries, tension, humour and, of course, romance. To be honest, I would have liked to see a bit more between Vincent and Kate but I guess their situation isn't exactly simple! So, in Until I Die we still have Vincent's words to keep us calm. He is still that charming guy from Die For Me just not in the best condition. His relationship with Kate is heartbreaking. No couple would want to be in the mess that their in. It was extremely interesting to see how they dealt with their problems and disagreements.
I don't want to give too much away about the ending, but I can tell you that it is unexpected and just so UNFAIR. Yes, guys, it's a sad ending! It will also leave you craving the next instalment.
Overall, Until I Die is a very exciting sequel that those who loved Die For Me should get their hands on RIGHT NOW! And if you have never heard of this series before then, please, go to your library/bookstore and start experiencing this bright new world!
I was blessed to receive an ARC of this book, and now have written this spoil-free review for anyone interested. Until I Die most definitely surpassed Amy’s first book, Die For Me. At least I think so. I love reading new, upcoming authors and watching how their writing grows and flourishes over time—one see’s it all the time, i.e. J.K. Rowling, Cassandra Clare, Libba Bray, and Terry Goodkind to name a few. And Amy is no exception to this; there are beautiful metaphors, rich descriptions, and we discover layers to some characters that we might not have even realized had layers. Now that is said, this is Kate’s book. Really, genuinely Kate’s book all the way. I found myself truly connecting with her as she goes through tough decisions, while always keeping reality in perspective. Though this might sound odd, I found myself loving her the most whenever she doubted herself or others—because it is the human thing to do. For example, she loves Vincent; but she also keeps in mind the countless “mortal couples,” I believe was the phrasing, which are unable to make things work. Then we get to meet this very new side of Kate that I love and hope everyone else does too. While I do not want to give anything away, Kate is not a damsel in distress; she is fully capable of defending herself. Kate shines in this book, and I mush say, it is a shame that the YA tourney occurred before this book is published. Another treat for the fans, is the rich history of the revenant’s that is delved into. Actually, I have a hunch that this book only scrapes the surface of the detail constructed around these beautiful, mystical beings, but I found myself so very intrigued about all these facts that we did not know before, and I am sure everyone else will love them too! I know everyone is interested about the plot and what happens, and some are concerned about the ending (yes, it is worthy of tears), but I am wary of spoilers. Kate and Vincent are as much in love as ever at the beginning of the book (and yes, there are some very worthy “ravishing” scenes between the two) but like in any book, there is a conflict. And this book gives an excellent view of how Kate and Vincent each deal with this conflict, and as I said before, it is in watching Kate go through this and how she deals with this, that makes me love her even more. And yes, it is a very sad ending, quite a contrast to the lovely ending of the last book, but this is a trilogy! It does not mean that the end of the story will be tragic! Although, for all I know, it could be. Besides, no matter how mad some of us might get at authors for making tragic, cliffhanger endings, we love it. After all, books make us feel things, and tragic, cliffhanger endings sure do make me feel a lot! If nothing else, this book was entertaining, and I loved the Buffy references and the mass of old films. If you like the first book, you will love the second installment. If you did not like the first book, I am still betting that you will love the second installment. A big thank you to Amy for WRITING these books! If you do not already know this, not only is she a great writer, but also she is fantastic when it comes to communicating with us fans. Just check out the acknowledgment page when this book hits the stands. So another big thank you for being so awesome to us.
I am so far behind! I read this book back in March and have not gotten around to writing a review. I guess it's a good thing life was too crazy to read much last month or I may never get caught up on my reviews.
I love this series. I don't think it has got the hype it deserves. Great setting, beautiful cover, well written, fabulous characters and clean enough that I don't have to put a big disclaimer if I recommend it.
I love the Revenants lore/world that the author created. Can't wait to see how everything plays out in the next book.
Be warned there is a huge cliffhanger ending and the final book doesn't come out until May of 2013! If you haven't read this series you should but maybe wait until it's a little closer to the release date for the final book: If I Should Die. I can't wait to read it!
I admit I did like the first book in the series a tad more than I liked this one. I was able to put Until I Die down when I had to and come back to it. There are some books I just can't put down (such as book 1 - Die for Me) but this was one I could. Still a great book!
Rating: 4.5 Stars - Great Book!
Source: ARC from Publisher
Content: I didn't take any notes but I can't remember anything really objectionable. A little too grown up for my 12 year old but ok for older teens.
Reviewer's Note: At the onset, it became apparent I wasn't the right person for reviewing this book. But I was intrigued by all the five star reviews of Die for Me, so I decided to investigate, by asking the one person I know who'd rush out to get Until I Die and devour it in a couple of hours even though it usually takes her a month to finish anything, my little sis, who I'll refer to as Amy Plum's Number One Fan (APNOF) and occasionally Insane Amy Plum Fan (IAPF). She also wanted me to give this one five stars, but I refused, so she's threatening to eat my sandwich the next time we go out for lunch together. We both know I'll just order another one. Stay tuned.
Me: So, uh, the Die for Me sequel.
APNOF: It's so good!!!
Me: And how would you describe it, like the intro for a review maybe?
APNOF:Until I Die has been one of the best and one of the worst books I have ever read. Overall, the book was amazing. There was a fantastic plot as usual and lots of action and romance.
Me: Uh-huh. I didn't ask for an actual intro. One of the worst books ever, let's focus on that.
APNOF: The ending of the book had me wanting to rip my hair out!
Me: That bad huh? Want to try one of my crime thrillers? Maybe a young adult book with some actual action?
APNOF: No!! Amy leaves the ending on a cliff-hanger and I'm just dying for the next one. Dying!! So when does it come out?
Me: Ummm... (Readers, if you can fill this in for me in the comments, much appreciated. Never mind, I see it's May 2013, not that I'm going to say anything.)
Me: What's wrong with the cliffhanger? As a warning, there are unmarked spoilers from here on out. I thought about marking them, but it'd mess up the flow of the conversation, so I left them unmarked. You've been warned.
APNOF: It was the worst way to end it because it was a life or death situation. We don't know whether or not Vincent is dead. He is such a good person that not knowing whether he is dead or alive is heartbreaking. However, the way it is written even with the hair-pulling ending is amazing. It's easily a five-star book! And besides, authors are supposed to keep you wanting more. Amy does a fantastic job with this book.
Me: I'm not giving it five stars. There is where she threatened to eat my sandwich. I'll spare you the details.
Some time later... Me: Let's talk about plot.
APNOF: Amazing!! The villain was written perfectly. I could not have predicted who it was.
Me: And why's that? I'm more surprised by her statement than who the villain is.
And another warning, her answer has a lot of spoilers. APNOF: Violet seemed so sweet and innocent and she was a revenant. Nobody could have thought she was actually in cahoots with the Numa. There was an intense battle scene between the revenants and Numa and people's true allegiances came out. This only made Vincent's 'death' all the more heartbreaking. And what was most surprising was how Violet's best friend betrays her and decides to help the good guys instead of her. At this point, I don't think we're reading the same book, the battle scene was like less than a chapter of maybe five or six people in a streetfight in an alley. Correct me if I'm wrong.
Me: Ok, what about characters? You keep mentioning Vincent. What's so great about him? This question was an accident.
APNOF: Didn't I already tell you? He is such a good person.
Me: That's it? No other reason? This one too.
IAPF: That's it. That's what mushy romances are all about, obviously you don't understand dummy.
Me: ...
Me: And he's not the main character. What about Kate?
IAPF: Who?
Me: ... She figures out Kate's the narrator, obviously, and then goes right back into how much she needs to read the next book. At this point I'm not really paying attention.
Anyway, there you have it. Why you should read this book. Personally, I think it's merely ok or maybe a little better, not nearly as bad as Twilight which this has been compared to in marketing materials, but not the amazing thing it should be given all the great reviews. There's a new mystery in this one that goes into the world of revenants a little more, and just like last time Kate goes around trying to find answers. At least she's independent and thinks for herself. The plot's investigative, not really fast moving, and the action (if it's ok to call it that) is confined to the last few chapters, just like Die for Me, but I suppose it all works out to about the same as the first book. And as always, Amy Plum sure knows her stuff about France. So, if you liked Die for Me, I don't think there's any reason why you wouldn't like Until I Die. Yeah, tepid endorsement, but otherwise I got nothing. Three stars.

Until I Die by Amy Plum
WOW! This book blew me away. After book one which I loved I was really excited to get my hands on this one. This book picks up just after the ending of book one, Plum glosses over the events in book one in about half a page scattered throughout book two. (I do recommend you read book one before picking up book 2.)
We meet our heros again and we learn more about the revenants and the numa in this one then we did before. Their history really comes alive in this one! We also get to learn a little more about Jules and his human life, which was awesome. Though I admit I am a Vincent fan girl all the way! We get to see him grow as a character and we learn some surprising and great information about him that we never knew before.
This book for me was an emotional roller-coaster, there were twists and turns, some I guessed, some I didn't. I was literally laughing out loud, sighing, saying things like "Aw, that is so sweet!" and the very next page I was shouting "Holy Shit no way!"
By the end of this book I was crying thinking, no it did not just end like that, I keep picking it up hoping that magically there will be one more paragraph to let me know what happens to Kate and Vincent. I've never wanted the last book in a series this much.
If you liked Die for me you will LOVE Until I die. Both are great books, but with this installment Plum has shown she is a literary force that will go far. The wait for book three will be a long one for fans after that massive cliff hanger ending.
The day I stop seeing you as one of the strongest people I know is the day I wake up human. ------------------- This would be my first comeback review after a long reading and reviewing hiatus. I’ve got Until I Die as an ARC and was dying to get my hands on it because the first book left me begging for more.
First off, I would like to emphasize that I love Ms. Plum. I love the way she writes and her creative way in making the dead so hot. :) I love the chemistry between Kate and Vincent on the first book. I also love the supporting characters specifically Jules (who doesn’t love Jules? *wink*) I love the whole concept of the Revenants. I love the setting (Where? Paris baby!) Plus the cover of the first and second book were G.O.R.G.E.O.U.S! (who’s with me??!) There are tons of things to love about the Revenant series but this second book slightly disappointed me. For me it wasn’t as good as the first one. A lot of you might bash me for even saying that but really there are a lot of low points for me in this book but luckily the ending still made it a good book for me. I just love unexpected endings! And this book despite the cliffhanger would definitely put you at the edge of your seat pleading for the next book!
Here the low lights of this book for me: 1. I love Kate and Vincent. I already made that clear on the first part of this review. Their relationship for me was as normal as breathing for me even though we all know how not normal their relationship is (falling in love with a dead person? Definitely not normal! :P) Their relationship for me here began from being “aww so cute” to “arrrggg they should split up” for me. I was like “OOOhh myyy Goosh she shouldn’t have done that or noooo he should have been honest with her”. Something was so not right with Kate and Vincent on this book. Their couple problem was actually the reason why the bad thing at the end of the book happened. *Ooopps. Sorry for the spoiler* There were secrets involved which caused misunderstandings and even more problem. I was like “Come on Vincent you’re becoming like paranoid Edward!” This just didn’t work well with me. I was hoping for something more. 2. It lacked action. Yeah there were a bit towards the end but yeah I was hoping the second book would have more kickass scenes but no there wasn’t much more than the first one. It became boring on the middle part of the book but at least it progressed towards the end. 3. It was a little predictable. Okay, I am gonna be honest, it was very predictable. I knew who the bad guy was from the very beginning. That was a big minus point for me. 4. Like the first book, this book has a slow pace. Too slow for me. It worked for the second book but not on this one. I was hoping it would increase its pace because this is the second book but it didn’t.
Yeah I know I noticed a lot of bad things but there were good things too. 1. Let me start with the cover. It is just so gorgeous. Sometimes the book’s cover makes a reader want to open its pages. 2. I get to learn more about the Revenant history more. I am always fascinated with how they started or if whether everyone does what they do or if whether they know everyone and how the Revenant thing worked. If you want to find out more about the Revenants definitely you’ll find your answers here. There was less action but more information. 3. I usually don’t like cliffhangers and this book has the worse one! Why worse? Because it would definitely make you want more of it. It was also definitely unexpected which makes it all the more “uuuhhhh! I wanna get my hands on you” book.
This may not be one of my favorite sequels but it the third one I think would be very much anticipated not just by me but by everyone! I think this book suffered the “middle book syndrome”. It wasn’t so bad but for me it was just a little disappointing.
Will I still read the last book? Definitely! I want to know how everything will play out. I want to see what happens to Vincent and Kate. I want to know if Jules will find love. *giggle* I want to know if Charles and Charlotte will move back to Paris. There are tons of things that I want to know and hopefully the finale won’t disappoint me.
As much as I would like to give it 4 stars or more, I really couldn’t. I give this book 3.5 stars!
So yeah, this book was all kinds of badass and now I'm freaking out! That ending was evil!!!!!!! I'm glad I bought If I Should Die like I was instructed to do because holy shizzle, I'm not happy! And I KNEW I didn't trust that wench for a reason! Shiiiiiiit! I love this series with mad passion. Amy Plum is a fantastic storyteller with an imagination that I long to have. This book picks up where book one left off and though it was a year since I read Die For Me, I don't remember the details but I'm remember how much I loved the plot and the badass characters. Ambrose, Charlotte, Charles, Gespard, Jean-Baptiste, Gramie, Papy, Georgia, Kate, Jules and the best of all....Vincent!!!!
Now we're introduced to new characters, Violette and Arthur. Lots of crazy shit happens and I'm along for the ride and love every bit of it. Kate is in love with a revenant...Vincent. He saved her life a year ago and they've gotten close and fallen in love. Well how weird is it to be in love with a zombie...an undead being?! Though a sexy one, I'll take that. Now Kate is part of their world, living in Paris, finishing high school all the while being sought out by the bad guys known as numa. A lot of crazy shiz happen and while trying to find a way for her and Vincent to be together without too much complication since he saves humans and dies in the process, things start to take a turn for the worse. Kate, being human and getting herself into dangerous trouble will stop at nothing to find a cure for her beloved. But when things go amiss, she finds that she's confided in the wrong person for advice and handed over information that has now destroyed her hopes of any future with Vincent....
Ahhhhhh okay, I almost gave shit away. All I'm gonna say is that even though the first half was filled with nothing but well nothing too crazy happened. I enjoyed everything. Every time Vincent was in the scene I was either smiling like a fool or swooning like a teenage girl. I heart that boy! He's truly amazing and my favorite revenant. But that ending has me worried as hell and I can't wait to read the last book and see what happens. I know Amy won't disappoint. Also I love this series being set in Paris. It's gorgeous and I can just imagine all the places that are mentioned and described so vividly. It makes me wanna go there so badly. Also I love every damn character in this book...except a few of course. I miss Charlotte and hope to see her in If I Should Die. I love Georgia, she's the best sister ever. Ambrose is amazing...and then there's Jules. What can I say?! I love him too. This was a fantastic continuation to a wonderful series. If you haven't read it, I highly recommend it!!!!
Now onto Die For Her, the novella before If I Should Die.
What a wonderful and beautiful sequel to Die For Me... I read this with anticipation, dread, captivation... you name it, I felt it... I LOVED this second book, it quickly became one of my top 5 books of 2012 and when it finished, I was numb!
Amy Plum has a unique style of writing for me, she captivates me with her words and seems to make everything simply beautiful! I loved Vincent even more so this time round, I loved the rest of the characters too... this was a wonderful sequel and I am utterly devastated that I have to wait so long for the next one!!!
Didn't like the first book much so I was probably not going to read this any time soon anyway, now I don't know if I care to read more of this author ever, regardless of my feelings about the first one.
So very tired of all of this. So very tired.
(Added a link to the first book because I'm a whore for "likes" and I must crush Lucy in the charts! Muahahaha.)
Loved it! I was very surprised at who turned out to be the enemy within in the end. It was a good surprise though; great cliffhanger. Luckily for me, I borrowed all three books at the Library before I started the series. So, I’m already nose deep into the final book.
Lettura consigliata? Si, ovviamente dopo aver letto Die for me!
Until I Die really surprised me. And in a good way. It didn’t suffer from “second book” syndrome! You know what I mean. In the first book our hero and heroine are working do hard to be together and then they finally get to at the end. Only to find some sort of unobtainable obstacle in book two that pushes them apart.
I kept waiting for that to happen in book Until I Die… and it didn’t. Well not really. Sure Vincent and Kate had their share of struggles, but they were together. They might have been keeping a few things from each other, but they always told the other what was going on, just not eventually. That made me really respect them as characters!
This sequel was a smashing success! I adored it! Jules and Ambrose, I love those two. I really missed Charlotte this time around. I love the character dynamics, the unconventional family that they’ve all created. They’d all die for each other. And they do die! Ha! And I really enjoyed the new characters we meet this time around! Though I figured out who the bad guy was long before Kate let the pieces fall together!
I am still completely captivated by the revenant mystery and can’t wait for me! Until I Die really does a wonderful job setting up the next book. I can’t wait to find out what happens to Vincent and Kate!
On another note, I love that I get to visit Paris while reading these novels. You can tell that Plum has a wonderful understanding of the city and the culture. I only hope I can experience it first hand one day!
Honestly, I'm highly disappointed in Until I Die. It was extremely hard to get through this book. I think it took me at least a month to finish it. I kept putting it down after each and every chapter. I felt like Until I Die was a completely different book from Die for Me.I really wish I could've liked it but I didn't. There were things in this book that were just too dull and predictable. I became uninterested in the story within the first couple chapters, but I kept going til the end hoping that it would pick up, but it didn't. I think the chances that I will read the final book are very slim right now. 8/
