Young Moon

Rate this book
Young Moon's father was Chinese on his mother’s side, and he could go on and on talking about the miraculous accomplishments of the great Chinese people.

He said more than once that they were among the most blessed and privileged of nations. After all, they had dozens of astronauts -- yuhangyuans -- in orbit and on the Moon, and there was a small base on Mars, too, being built by robots. Even bigger stations -- the ring cities -- were planned.

Young Moon used to get uncomfortable and wished he would lower his voice. Their walls were thin in Wonsan and school taught her that this kind of talk was treason. Teacher said the Dear Leader would know if you didn’t pay proper respect to the glories of the Homeland, and he could get very cross with you if he found out. Every screen was two-way and you never knew if someone was watching.

All she wanted was to be left alone to talk to the visions in her drawings -- visions that came to warn her of impending danger. But a chance word spoken by an angry classmate would force Young Moon’s family to flee North Korea for China, where she would witness her father set in motion a world-shaking disaster of epic proportions.

Disclaimer: I was given an e-copy of this book in exchange for a fair review.

Brief Summary: Young Moon is a Korean protagonist in this dystopian themed story. She learns more about her parents as they mysteriously move from Korea to China and eventually the US. Young is forewarned in her drawings about impending doom but fails to yield to them. As a result, she fails to stop her father and his ambitions for the future of the human race. The results are catastrophic and her family struggles to survive.

What I liked: There aren't too many asian female protagonists especially in the dystopian genre so I enjoyed the sprinkle of the Korean and Chinese culture in the book. It was fast paced and a quick read as well.

What I didn't like: Young's gift of drawing circles and bringing images to life showed a lot of promise but it wasn't explored as much as I had hoped. In fact, omitting her gift entirely from the book probably wouldn't even change the plot. Also, the father's character seemed unrealistic. His responses to her questions are way beyond the understanding of most average teenagers.

Verdict: I expected an entertaining fast paced story about an adventure with a non-Caucasian protagonist and it did not disappoint. The story is geared toward a tween-teen female reader.

This is a facinating story about Earth's environmental devistation and possible continuation of life. The story is told by a child then young woman named Young Moon who tells the story through her eyes. It is well written and I loved it!

A really fast, interesting read about what happens when one man takes the fate of the earth into his own hands, as told by his daughter.

DNF at 50%. I haven't read this for almost a year and I don't think I will finish it. I was quite interested in the story when I started reading it but at some point I just lost interest. I don't think there is anything wrong with the writing or the story. It's just been so long since I last read this book that I don't feel like getting back to it. If I ever want to finish this book, I will probably start it from the beginning.

The blurb does not do any justice to this book, I was hooked from the very first page. I thought it was interesting that the author saw that there was a gap in the science fiction genre for teenage girls. I thought the main character Young Moon was very mature for her age, it did not dawn until nearly the end of the book that this character is reflecting on her past memories, this was a very interesting way of laying out the plot-line. Although I did not think there was much depth with other characters in the book, however this did not put me off at all.

I cannot believe I read this book in less than a day, it was very interesting as I don't think I have read anything like this before. I could not put it down.

Sparse, thoughtful writing and plotting that makes this novel so much more than just another YA dystopian. Young Moon is captivating. This series shows so much promise -- and the pushing and pulling if the series narrative through individual voices is startling refreshing in a genre that typically gets much too bound up with its own repetitive tropes (i.e. Hunger Games, Divergent, Maze Runner).

Not sure I liked the ending. Terribly sad.. or maybe disheartening would be a better word.

This felt like a good rough-outline for a story. I think the Earth got his by an asteroid, but I'm not sure. It was very disjointed and awkward to read.
