Kiss Of Death

Rate this book
They lurk among the shadows in grimy city alleys, they reveal themselves amidst humanity's own man-made horrors, they rise from the darkness in fog shrouded forests, they may even hide in the house right next door, sitting there beside us, mirroring our strangest dreams and our most terrifying nightmares, weaving their dark magic of sin and lust and delicious violence, just waiting to embrace us with their kiss of madness...their kiss of dark desire...their kiss of death.

This has been languishing on Mt TBR for entirely too long. I managed to finish it off this morning, however, while my dog napped in my lap.

moragfreyser summed it up--this is an anthology, so there'll be some you like and some you won't. The first story didn't really do much for me and so I didn't quite get off on the right foot with this anthology, especially since the quotes that are scattered around the book (both vampire quotes from other people and the story extracts that preface each story) rather irritated me. The second story was sufficiently original enough to draw me on, however.

There was the predictable ("Pet Consultation"), the pointless ("Friends", "Winding the Clock"), the disturbing ("Blood Feud") and the downright baffling ("Who was Jane Dalotz?"). The highlight for me was "Bongo Bobbie's Bel Air" which I felt had a nice blend of desperation and whimsy. "The Pale Hill's Side" was an interesting blending of mythologies and "La Petite Morte" was a strong, more classical note to finish on.

There were a couple of typos that I found rather distracting and made it more apparent that I was looking at a small press publication, but thankfully there weren't too many of those.

If you're looking for something scary, I'd say this book is not for you, but if you're looking for some different takes on vampires you might find a few stories here you'll enjoy.
