This is an enjoyable witch story. It is about Matt, a man that would like to live a normal life with his loving wife, Teri. Unfortunately, this may not be possible because he has to contend with the fact that his mother is a witch. Not wanting to see the results of her evil ‘fun,’ Matt sees it as his duty to try and stop, or at least reverse the crimes perpetrated her and her coven.

When a carefree walk with his wife in the park brings into sight a conglomeration of dark and evil, whitchly clouds collecting over houses of government, simply hoping for the best is a little more than Matt feels he has any right to do.

So, even though the dark clouds in this context are quite literal, it is a fun take the actions people feel they have to perform to prevent harm from arising through the deeds of their loved ones.

"Dark Clouds" by Scott Bury is a short story about a man, Matt; his girlfriend, Terri; and Matt's mother, Helen. All the characters are apparently witches, or at least well-versed in witchcraft and magic. Helen and her coven announce their arrival in town by sending black clouds ahead of them, which find and swirl about Matt and Terri, blowing dust and duff in their faces. Terri has had enough, and urges Matt to do something about his mother... permanently. Matt agrees and quickly approaches his mother, who has interrupted a government committee meeting by turning the participants into a bunch of drooling, sleeping-with-open-eyes, meat bags. Matt does something which is supposed to take away his mother's magical power, but she was expecting him to do that, and was ready for him. So what would happen? Was Matt going to prevail? Or does his Mother put an end to him? What is her coven doing while Matt and Helen go at each other?

This story was unusual. It also had an ending that just sort of left you hanging, not really sure who won, even though it appeared one of them was all but dead. But its "unusualness" and its uncertain ending are two of the things that made it interesting. I recommend this to fans of witchcraft and the paranormal, or fans who just like "something different" than the norm. I liked the story, and would be delighted if Scott Bury decided to write a sequel to continue the ongoing friction between the characters who remain.

WITCHY

Matt Always knew when his mother arrived in town: the wind would swirl from every direction at once, sending the neighbour’s weather-vane spinning clackety-clack and the yellow and brown leaves whirling along the road like a child’s top. This is the opening line of this story and should give you some idea of what Matt’s mother, Helen, is like. I said should, but you have no idea how scary she gets until you read this clever story.

You will not know who to feel sorrier for, Matt or his wife, Teri.

Just when you think to yourself, ok, I had a mother-in-law like Helen; Helen pulls out a completely new set of tricks.

I really enjoyed this story and look forward to reading more by this talented author, Scott Bury.

Dark Clouds by: Scott Bury was a pleasant little surprise of a short story. A son of a witch has to confront his evil witch mother (apparently regularly) over her trying to control politicians, interfering with humans, that kind of think. The short story pretty much concentrates on one incident. The mother witch & her coven can not injur him & his wife, because of his own power & such. It was a fast, interresting little read.
