First Responder's Guide to Abnormal Psychology: Applications for Police, Firefighters and Rescue Personnel

Rate this book
This book gives readers critical insights into the human impact of extreme trauma, and the various levels of mental impairment suffered by both victims and survivors. Renowned trauma experts William Dorfman and Lenore Walker give this book immediate relevance through the use of real-life examples from a wide range of crisis situations. They have also deliberately minimized research citations within the text for greater readability.

Even with my background in counseling psychology, military, chemical dependency counseling, and suicide intervention, this has been an incredibly great resource as a firefighter and emergency medical responder. The case studies/examples give a context and urgency of the situation not found in psychiatric hospitals or in a one-on-one counseling session. Reading the examples and the guided response has been priceless for prepping. As a firefighter/EMR, you NEVER stop training. There is no shortage of mental illness and chemically induced abnormal behavior. The book emphasizes issues in disaster as well as crime victims. Resiliency, the mental illness and the law, as well as summaries of DSM criterion also included and beneficial for those not familiar with mental illness.
