James Goldman was an American Academy Award-winning screenwriter and playwright, and the brother of screenwriter and novelist William Goldman.
He was born in Chicago, Illinois and grew up primarily in Highland Park, Illinois, a Chicago suburb. He is most noted as the author of The Lion in Winter and author of the book for the stage musical Follies.
Goldman died from a heart attack in New York City, where he had lived for many years.
I must "confess" that I liked this. Even though the novel was like a telenovela in writing. Full of clichés and incredible coincidences. The location was a bit like Payton Place and so was the story - I don't refer to the book which I haven't read but the tv-series which run in Finland in 1970s (about). Somewhat more sex and blowjobs in this one compared to those days.
This was also written like a bunch of tv-episodes. Quite a lot happened and there were many possibilities to serious and nasty consequences but all turned out to end moderately well, time after time. A normal tv-series recipe.
But as I said this was light, easy and entertaining and characters were interesting enough even though a bit predictable. Some surprises too.
My rating is two and a half stars really. What happens to relationships in a small Midwestern town at fair time when a carnival sideshow of exotic dancers show up. A really entertaining read, but the reason I didn't give it three stars is that I felt the ending was a little lacking.
