#1 New York Times bestselling author Tami Hoag mixes passion, politics, heartbreak, and humor in this powerful classic novel ignited by a man and woman whose desire for each other could lead them both to ruin. They were totally wrong for each other. A romantic odd couple. It was clear at first sight. Bronwynn Prescott Pierson was a jet-setting socialite, a one-time fashion icon, and now a runaway bride. Wade Grayson was a straitlaced, ambitious congressman from the American heartland. They couldn’t have had less in common and more to lose by their accidental meeting in the Vermont woods, where they’d each gone in hopes of escaping the past. Both drawn to the ruins of the old Foxfire estate, the woman from Venus and the man from Washington were playing a dangerous game with the most volatile and unpredictable of human emotions. And when it all blew up, the press would be there to broadcast the disaster to the world. But what their enemies didn’t count on was that the power that drew them together would always be a little stronger than anything—or anyone—that would try to drive them apart. From the Paperback edition.
Tami Hoag is the #1 internationally bestselling author of more than thirty books published in more than thirty languages worldwide, including her latest thrillers—BITTER SEASON, COLD COLD HEART and THE 9TH GIRL. Renowned for combining thrilling plots with character-driven suspense, Hoag first hit the New York Times Bestseller list with NIGHT SINS, and each of her books since has been a bestseller.
She leads a double life in Palm Beach County, Florida where she is also known as a top competitive equestrian in the Olympic discipline of dressage. Other interests include the study of psychology, and mixed martial arts fighting.
My last two books were romantic-suspense that were really heavy on the suspense/terror element. I needed something lighter and with a touch of humor. Mismatch fit the bill to a T. I absolutely love these older romance books by Tami Hoag. They have H/h who are just wonderful. I know, the book is dated. The pop culture references are 25 years out of date. That doesn't bother me. What shines through is that this is a wonderful, sweet, humorous love story.
Bronwynn is a Boston heiress who found her fiancée in bed with her cousin 2 days before the wedding. It took her two days to get over the shock, but during the ceremony she objected to her own marriage and told everyone why. Then she took off to the wilds of Vermont to reevaluate why she could ever have thought she loved that piece of crap, Ross.
Wade is a congressman from Indiana who is on the fast track to burnout. His doctor has ordered him to his retreat in Vermont to R&R and get his life in better balance. While on a walk he comes upon Bronwynn in her wedding dress setting fire to a Gucci suitcase of expensive men's clothing. He puts a stop to that and his life is altered forever.
I just loves the scene where Wade just can't leave Bronwynn alone her first night at Foxfire. It is so sweet that he shows up with his camping equipment and a bag od PPJ sandwiches.
Basically a bodice-ripper. Sex, sex, sex... after a while I just skipped those parts. The plot line was pretty basic, the characters stereotypical. I did actually finish it though - quick read, 2, maybe 3 days. I got a bunch of Tami Hoag books from a library sale, and I'm going through them chronologically by published date. Thank goodness she eventually moves on to big girl books!
It's certainly not the best book by Tami Hoag, but I enjoyed it. If I could, I would give it 3.5 stars.
The conflict that seemed to be more important to me did not end up being the "main" problem of the book. It felt a bit strange that the deeper and more complex emotional problem was pushed to the side in favor of the last minute mess that Ross made. I think it would have been more satisfying and complete if the overarching problem was addressed rather than introducing a new one.
I also would have liked the ending to be a bit more definitive, especially about (what I felt was) the more pressing overall conflict, but I was just happy that it ended how I wanted.
A romance novel that doesn't quite have enough romance (though lots of non-descript sex) featuring the old cliche of two people who hate the other, but are inexplicably drawn to each other. The "Mismatch", in this case, is a senator and a fashion model. But the senator is a nice guy who cares about his constituents (not like the current crop of legislators). He's even hunky, despite living off microwave burritos and suffering from an ulcer. The fashion model comes from a bad break up on her wedding day in high society, and yet she roughs it in the wilderness, has a pet sheep, and in general out Tomboys any farm hand.
The book feels very much like it started with one concept, but as it went along became something else and the author never went back to make sure the first half matched the second.
If you're looking for a light-hearted throwback old-fashion romance novel then you'd probably give this 5 stars. Written back in 1989, with the simplicity of life before the internet era, it introduces us to an unlikely duo, a congressman and a model. The bickering between the oddly pair is rather adorable and will probably put a smile on your face as your go through the pages. There wasn't really a conflict in the book, simply the progression of the relationship with a lot of explicitly romantic scenes in there. The characters arent too deep, but there is a little bit of a back story to give readers an idea of who they are. The book's language is fairly simple, however there are some references, phrase and words from the 80's that i did have to look up.. Overall, perfect book for a late night snooze right before you pass out..
A typical romance story from the past when all the authors wrote the same formula... and we all lapped it... boy meets girl.. they are different, they fall into lust, they break up and then they live happily ever after. Sometimes they is a quirky character.. in this case it is a sheep.. that she treats like a dog and brings everywhere with her. The sheep makes no sense since she grew up rich , and then was a famous model. Sheep are not smart creatures and are not clean creatures ( I used to raise sheep ) In this case, she was a model who found her husband about to be in bed with her cousin, she runs away to an inherited mansion that was a refuge when she was child but is now falling down but she stays there in her wedding dress. He is a congressman needing a health break who 'saves " her .
The characters are mismatched. The reader cannot forget that because it is stated from the beginning to the end. The differences are not resolved ever except in erotic sex expressly stated often. She is "sweet." He is "handsome." And there is the story. I read it to the end, wanting to find out if there would be a recognition that despite obvious differences in life choices and preconceived ideas, there were underlying common values. I think one could allude to that but it is never really clear. I know this is one of the author's first books. I will look for more by her that are more recently written.
Too much explicit sex. Not very believable: why would she fall for him (other than lust, which can be confused for love)?; why would he fall for her? Is it realistic that she would tell only her sister? Is it realistic that she would suddenly (after how many years?) remember the house her uncle left her rather than going to her sister's place? Books can stretch the boundaries of the imagination, and they do not have to be realistic (grounded in the everyday). This does stretch the imagination. A lot.
Romance novel from a princess of horror crime fiction, oh yes please. Tami is a real writer it's not all death and horribleness but she can write ANYTHING! Is this the most believable love story every written, nah. But I did root for the scrappy congressman and his mismatched eyes socialite paramour. I love when writers do the unexpected and Tami surprised me, because I just knew she was going to sneak a corpse somewhere.
For any other author, I would probably give this a 2 or 3 star rating. But after reading 6 of this author riveting books, this one fell extremely short! She has such great descriptive stories in her books, but this one felt like it was written for a shallow teenager. Also, the female that was reading this book (audio book) was not even believable. Every other book I have read from her were solid 4+ stars! This was a very short book as well.
I think this is my first book from this author. I hope that if I read another, that it will be better. This one boring with no real story and even the characters were flat. A minimal attempt was made to make the characters interesting but failed. I can't even say it's a good read for the beach... unless your goal is to sleep....
1.5--This was the audio abridged version and I'm not sure if that's what contributed to the low score or if it was because I was expecting a mystery and got a romance. Either way--not worth the time.
i enjoyed Tami Hoags dectective novels but really found this one hard to stomach, especially the pet sheep. I mean my cousin had a pet sheep, they are not much of a pet, really stupid and pretty stinky, Pig would have made much more sense. but then again the book was pretty nonsensical.
Started reading it and it seemed like a fun little romance. Towards the middle and the end it became a lot of sex with much more detail than necessary. I quit reading. I don’t mind innuendos or even a quick statement that they had sex, I don’t need an anatomy or how to lesson though.
As romantic comedy goes Amusing and diverting, But without a whole Lotta substance and the characters are over the top too good to be true in a lot of ways and therefore unbelievable. This is entertaining romantic fluff.
This is my first Tami Hoag romance. I read several reviews before purchasing it and decided to give it a try. Yes, it is a bit dated. Yes, it follows a romance rubric. But it did have unexpected laughter which is a plus for me. The story was in entertaining and took me away for a while.
If there were prizes for worst book I’ve read this year - this would win I imagine a 10 year old might find it interesting It was downhill after the first 2 pages Dialogue so cliché I could gag No, I could not finish
Another knock out novel by Ms. Hoag! I bought the paperback edition many years ago. I bought this Kindle version only a few days back. I didn't remember how funny it was. THANK YOU MS. HOAG, AGAIN. Monica Beltrami, from Montevideo, Uruguay
This was a fun, quick romance. Bronwynn was a quirky, sassy, and strong heroine who just had to regain her trust in herself. Wade was a kindhearted workaholic. But somehow, these opposites definitely attracted!
Who would have thought she could write a romance and do it so well. This is a delight and humorous. Have read her crime novels so this was a pleasant surprise.
