The #1 New York Times bestselling author who "just keeps getting better and better" (St. Louis Post-Dispatch) presents five novels in her sensational supernatural series featuring Anita Blake, federal marshal and vampire hunter. Cerulean Sins, Incubus Dreams, Micah, Danse Macabre, The Harlequin
Laurell K. Hamilton is one of the leading writers of paranormal fiction. A #1 New York Times bestselling author, Hamilton writes the popular Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter novels and the Meredith Gentry series. She is also the creator of a bestselling comic book series based on her Anita Blake novels and published by Marvel Comics. Hamilton is a full-time writer and lives in the suburbs of St. Louis with her family.
A series that once started as an animator (person who can raise zombies) solving crimes dealing with "monsters" (lycanthropes like werewolves and shifters, vampires, even a demon and fae once. Well like any story with evolving characters things change some good some not so good. Anita is growing more powerful and how she handles, deals and comes to grip with all those changes make some interesting reading. Very action packed with mystery, danger, sex, violence, sex (oh yes needs to be mentioned again) and so much more. Some things may trigger some readers, such as violence, rape, death, BDSM, child abuse, and so much more when characters flash back or action scenes.
The first 5 books are still my favorites. Books 11-15 include all the regular characters plus many new ones. In my opinion, too much time spent on on relationship angst and sex, not enough focus on character development and plot. Not that this will slow me down as I continue the series because there are enough fascinating characters and plot twists to keep me hooked.
There is so much not plot (I said what I said) to skip it makes reading these books painful. Eight pages of sex was fun at first I even cheered for her since Anita can be the most annoying person to read, but it's too much. Cant stop now 😤 in too deep
If Game of Thrones, Twilight and Tombraider had a baby, then the outcome would be the Anita Blake series. I have been taken over by this series. Like any good book, I simply cannot put it down. As soon as I finish one, I pick up the next. There are a variety of issues within that leave me frustrated and angry with the author: Anita’s character (the main character) is often stubborn, naive and often comes across dumb. I know the author needs a way to explain things to the readers, but I REALLY wish she went a different direction to educate us. Every time Anita asks “what does that mean?,” I want to slap her. I picture her being a blonde, using a dog’s head tilt, and that’s not what the character is supposed to relate at all. I constantly feel like I am 10 steps ahead of the writing, although I will say that Laurel surprises me every now and then. I have a lot of complaints AND compliments for these, but I don’t want to spoil it. I will say that Micah was incredibly disappointing in that it was only 12 chapters long. That’s not even a book! What in the world was the publisher even thinking by publishing it? The whole book tasted like a regret, and I could almost feel the author’s boredom. To where she gets to chapter 11 and decides to throw in the towel. Why print it at all? I was left confused and disappointed. Other than that, if you like vampires and dark supernatural, and you love risky sex, this is definitely the series for you!
This set of books in the series really creeped me out. I had to stop and take breaks from it, which I never do. The plot in these books went very Dark, and I felt like I need my brain washed out after reading all the pornographic descriptions and situations. I’m sad that these books went where I’ve never seen a book go plus the explicit descriptions of sexual acts! I’m nervous to buy the next set of this series. If the books are as bad as this set, I’m not reading them. I love that Anita is an amazing strong willed woman, and such a strong character. But this set of books in the series ruined it for me.
This review covers all five books to some extent, while avoiding spoilers & being rather flavored by the last book. Anita has been seriously trying to take the parts of her life that work while minimizing the rest. We do meet the mysterious and lethal Harlequin but some characters are unable to either see or process the sight. Anita is gaining in power and abilities, but fears that her grasp won’t be sufficient for the events & enemies that are trying to destroy her. She’s getting more able to gain insight into what things are affecting her but is still frustrated with her responses to them.
If you are like me and purchase the audio book along with the book. It is not possible to get the discount audios for each book. Normally, for example, if I had purchased Incubus Dreams, it would be $7.99 for the book and $7.49 for the audio. Hmmm, I have Incubus in the batch of book format and the freaking audio is $45+!!!!! as it is considered a new ourchase. Incredibly disappointed as audio is important as I am disabled and unable to hold books for long periods.
As always, Laurell K. Hamilton's books never disappoint and leave me wanting to read more. Amazing storylines that seem so realistic, so descriptive that you can visualise the scenes in your head. Love Anita Blake's kickass, strong willed attitude. Keep the books coming! Maybe one year they will start making movies out of the series.
I',m hooked on this series and it's author. I love the kick-,a.. heroine, the non-stop action, the complex characters and relationships, and.the unique world view. I think this series is well worth reading.
Anita's world is our world, with a twist. I know St. Louis and can picture where the action is taking place. I love that! If you're this far into the series and like me then they aren't characters anymore, they are, well, "people" that you know. Hamilton's ability to give us this totally believable world and this cast of characters that we know, some back to childhood, is a rare and remarkable gift. She's made me care about these people and I will say here that if anything ever happens to Nathaniel I may never recover! Just read her books, okay? Check out the Merry Gentry series too-it's addictive as well. I'll keep reading them as long as she keeps writing them. Well, as long as Nathaniel is okay.
I reviewed each book individually, but read the omnibus, and the omnibus had typos. She seems to have an issue with homonyms. I can't remember the word I'm thinking of that specifically stood out so starkly, but it was an interesting substitution. Also, than/then. Meh.
I love Anita but since I checked this out of the library I had to read the whole thing a nd I got a little burned out. I recommend reading them all but with a break in between.
