This handsomely illustrated book offers a panoramic view of ancient Mexico, beginning more than thirty thousand years ago and ending with European occupation in the sixteenth century. Drawing on archaeological and ethnohistorical sources, the book is one of the first to offer a unified vision of Mexico's precolonial past.

Typical histories of Mexico focus on the prosperity and accomplishments of Mesoamerica, located in the southern half of Mexico, due to the wealth of records about the glorious past of this region. Mesoamerica was only one of three cultural superareas of ancient Mexico, however, all interlinked by complex economic and social relationships.

Tracing the large social transformations that took place from the earliest hunter-gatherer times to the Postclassic states, the authors describe the ties between the three superareas of ancient Mexico, which stretched from present-day Costa Rica to what is now the southwestern United States. According to the authors, these superareas–Mesoamerica, Aridamerica, and Oasisamerica–cannot be viewed as independent entities. Instead, they must be considered as a whole to understand the complex reality of Mexico's past and possible visions of Mexico's future.

Un gran libro para tener un panorama general del desarrollo histórico de las culturas que se ubicaron en el territorio del México actual antes de la llamada conquista. El libro te lleva por un recorrido por la cronología de las distintas etapas temporales que se han propuesto para dividir la historia de Mesoamerica y cumple con su objetivo de caracterizar de la mejor manera posible cada una de estas etapas, destacando las similitudes y diferencias que se han observado en distintas regiones. La combinación de un autor historiador y otro arqueólogo (que además son padre e hijo) dan un balance excelente en las formas en que se aproximan a distintas temáticas. Un libro que recomendaría a cualquiera que busque conocer la historia general de Mesoamerica.

I read a more recent edition of this book in Spanish. The authors are very clear that this is an overview of recent archeological information about these cultures, not an in-depth examination. That said, if, like me, your knowledge of Mexico's indigenous past extends only to the Olmecs, Mayas and Aztecs--and maybe Zacatecas and Toltecas--you will be amazed at the number and diversity of cultures highlighted in this very readable book, as well as with the patterns and tributaries of influence each had on the other. It's a great introduction covering a wide range of topics--architecture, agriculture, arts & crafts, politics and social hierarchy, religion, etc.--in a fairly short book.

Uno de los mejores textos para aproximarse de manera general al estudio de Mesoamérica y Aridamérica. Si bien a algunos no profesionales del estudio de la historia, antropología o arqueología les podrán parecer complicadas algunas secciones, recomiendo que todo mexicano interesado en la época prehispánica lo lea, e incluso adquiera.

Para tener un panorama general sobre las culturas prehispánicas en México es muy efectivo, pero debe tomarse con cuidado ya que el mismo autor admite que por su generalidad deja muchos detalles fuera.
