This little known science fiction book club selection has a positive blurb from K.W. Jeter on the back, but the book left a lot to be desired. For 184 pages the narrative was extremely convoluted and confusing. Dozens of characters filled the pages and 50% of the dialogue ended in exclamation marks. Not the worst science fiction book I’ve ever read. But also not among the best.

A hard book to love. The back cover blurb sells it well - the world is full of clones of world-famous sexpot Mercedes Night, which is fine for everyone except the original real Mercedes Night. Unfortunately the book itself is a let-down - the narrative never takes off, with far too many characters thrown into the mix early on. The book is only 240 pages long, but every page after page 50 felt like a drag. Apologies to the author if he's reading this review, but I won't be searching out his other works - Philip K. Dick covers this terrain much better.
