" --Reference & Research Book NewsIndiana University Press, with the generous support of the L. J. and Mary C. Skaggs Foundation, is pleased to announce the republication of this folklore classic, in honor of the centenary of the American Folklore Society.
Stith Thompson (March 7, 1885 – January 13, 1976) was an American scholar of folklore. He is the "Thompson" of the Aarne-Thompson classification system, which indexes certain folktales by their structure and assigns them AT numbers. He also developed an alpha-decimal motif-index system (A~Z followed by numeral) for cataloging individual motifs.
This work is an incredible list of frequently used and named motifs of folk tales. It's unbelievably detailed and is structured in the most meticulous way. The book consists of 6 volumes, which include an alphabetical list, an introduction, structural overview and all the motifs. If you work academically on motifs and folk tales, this book is a must to reference out of.
This is a frightening work. Truly. The idea of the painstaking compilation of resources the man had to do is really something. This reference helped me write my undergraduate senior study paper, and it is helping me write a graduate paper as we speak.
