An hilarious selection of the best of John Clarke’s writing. Included are his early Fred Dagg radio scripts, his history of farnarkeling, his unforgettable royal commissions, his poems, and his famous television interviews with everyone from Bob Hawke to John Howard.
John Clarke (29 July 1948 – 9 April 2017) was a New Zealand–born comedian, writer, and satirist. He was born in Palmerston North, New Zealand, and lived in Australia from the late 1970s. He was a highly regarded actor and writer whose work appeared on the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) in both radio and television and also in print.
A wonderful selection of John's writing, covering his earlier radio work through to shorter prose pieces and his now famous interviews and some more experimental works (such as reinventing most established poets as Australian writers).
Something for everyone, but I would urge readers to persist with even things they hadn't been expecting (the poetry gave me pause and I had to have a few runs at it, but I'm glad I persisted)
These writings may be 20-40 years old, many referring to events prior to my birth, but they're as fresh and as funny as ever. What a legend. I was so glad to find this at the library! John Clarke had such a way with words and a playful sense of logic. Satire at its finest - exposing the world for how it really is. Who else could make interest rates, Telecom, or TAA so interesting and funny?
