Holly Gordon's estrangement from her family makes loneliness of the Christmas season hit close to home. Volunteering for the annual Ashton Falls Secret Santa Program is more than a comfort, it's a blessing. Just knowing she's able to help another hurting soul experience the joy of a heartfelt Christmas makes her own reality a tiny bit sweeter, that is, until Marcus Jenner ends up on her list.

Marcus Jenner is more than a bronze, muscled looker. This Chickasaw loner isn't happy being placed on the town's Secret Santa list. Suffering from the blow of a devastating loss, he has chosen to withdraw from living almost completely. For the life of him, he can't figure why this pretty little blonde keeps bumping into him, calling him by name, and insisting on giving him presents. Unfortunately for Marcus, every time she does, a billowing cloud of havoc seems to ensue. Why can't this uninvited vixen leave him alone?

They say time and fate have all of the answers. Holly, in all of her innocence, is drawn to Marcus like a moth to the flame. But Marcus has no intentions of submitting to the threat of his newfound feelings. A painful exchange pushes their lives into a pendulum chaos. His demand for privacy is granted by Holly's hidden illness. Her sudden absence hits him hard, especially when the arrival of a stranger delivers the rest of his gifts. Right away, he knows something's horribly wrong.

Love and selfless giving can rouse a wounded, sleeping heart. But sometimes a Secret Santa gets a few unexpected gifts of her own.

What started out as a lighthearted Christmas romance turned into a depressing near-death spiral. Add to that insta-love, inane misunderstandings, over-the-top cheesiness and a guy who thinks things like "I have no right to steal her chastity (what is this, Victorian England?), and I'd advise to give this one a pass.

Have the tissues ready for this one !! Kristine Cheney has tugged at every possible heart string possible in this read. Its filled with passion and a love story that will not only have you bawling your eyes out but your heart doing somersaults one moments and other moments feel like it was going to leave your chest.

Secret Santa is a well delivered intense and emotional read, that will not only tug at your soul but have your heart missing a few beats. The passion between Marcus and Holly was beautifully crafted, passionate and ** swoony..** waggles eyebrows !!

The storyline was amazing, I was drawn in from the very first pages, and found myself, giggling at the funny antics aka Holly's persistence was amusing and quiet funny at times. Other moments I was wiping the tears away, trying to solider on. A fluent flowing storyline that will only stop you reading to wipe aside the tears - I can guarantee you will read right till the end.

A wonderful array of characters that Im sure you will enjoy, a heartfelt storyline with emotions that are so well portrayed its like poetry. Kristine always portrays her characters emotions so fluently ..... giving us depth into there thoughts and actions and feelings. Her descriptions are well envisaged you can see every detail.

Secret Santa deliver us Holly she has been chosen to be the Secret Santa for Marcus Jenner. Marcus proves to be quiet a handful, not wanting the gifts Holly is leaving, he finds himself torn between the blonde eye beauty and her quest to deliver him gifts. Unbeknown as to why she is gifting him and stalking him - He is not sure if its the calling of his heart that bothers him most, or the persistence of her gifts, but in time he finds his secret Santa is needing the most treasured gift of all.

Secret Santa is immensely appealing and will linger in your heart long after you've read it. Lose your heart to a magical Christmas tale that shows the true beauty of giving but also receiving and the most precious gift of all. Love and life.

I reviewed this short story for my Blog at www.bookworm2bookworm.wordpress.com

I love nothing better than reading Christmas stories around Christmas time. I actually go out of my way to make sure my TBR is stocked up. This Christmas I'm recommending this short, sweet, funny and utterly romantic tear-jerker called `SECRET SANTA' by Kristine Cheney.

Holly is a girl after my own heart. She's bubbly, beautiful, determined and tenacious! For seven years she's been a part of Ashton Falls Secret Santa Program, and she embraced her `task' with all the enthusiasm and joy she possessed, especially because this particular time of year would remind her of lacking the closeness of her own estranged family.

Marcus is not looking forward to the Holidays nor is he in the mood for anything at all. His life has undergone a very dramatic change in the past few months and solitude is all he wants and welcomes, so finding an intruder on his porch, apparently delivering a gift, was something he isn't much happy about.

SECRET SANTA was a very heartwarming gift that appealed to every romantic bone in my body!

Ms. Cheney has done such a great job in creating these two lonely souls who through unforeseen circumstances are drawn to each other and are clearly meant to be together. In a short span of time Ms. Cheney has managed to make me laugh out loud when reading of Holly's deliveries, sighing every time these two just looked at each other, let alone touched! But most of all, Ms. Cheney had me in tears once I found the reasons behind our couple's loneliness and heartbreak.

Like I said, for such a short story, Ms. Cheney's managed to deliver a very rich and truly sweet romance that will leave you satisfied, happy and cozy all over!

This one is a Christmas MUST!

Oh my goodness… this book made me laugh, made me cry. This story really touched my heart. I loved all the characters. The romance was sweet, and sizzling, and the love that flowed between Holly, and Marcus felt real and everlasting.
Marcus was put on a secret Santa list. Marcus was gruff, and depressed. He wanted to be left alone to wallow in his grief. He didn’t want any gifts. Holly tried her best to sneak around and leave the gifts… But Marcus had a way of always catching her. Each time they met, the attraction between them grew. When Holly stopped dropping off the gifts, he knew something was wrong. You will just have to read this book to find out what happened, and how it ended. This is one of the BEST short stories I have ever read!
Here are a few samples of the book.
Sample from chapter 3 – Holly’s laughter was infectious. Helpless under her spell, Marcus was surprised to catch himself snickering right along with her.

Sample from chapter 5 – The luminescence of her pale skin reminded him of a lady’s finest pearls.

Sample from chapter 6 – Jane’s thin lipped smile could have launched a thousand ships. :You’re a gem for taking her place. I don’t think I’ve met anyone who takes her role in our charity as serious as Holly. That girl has a heart for people. It’s been a blessing and a joy working alongside of her on every holiday project. Anyone who’s had the honor of meeting her knows she’s an absolute angel.

I admit to loving Christmas stories in general. And this one pulls all of your emotions out of you. I laughed, cried and cheered at the end!

All Holly wants is to play Secret Santa like she has for the past several years. This get her through this lonely time of year. But through a series of misadventures one of her "missions" catches her in the act. But Holly is not about to let a little thing like a mission telling her no to stop her. She's going to deliver all 12 of Marcus' gifts come hell or high water or swimming pools. And there's the fact that there is something about Marcus that tugs her heart strings and makes her want something more in her life. Something like Marcus.

Marcus has lost his beloved wife a year ago and is in a bah, humbug kind of mood these days. The last thing he wants to deal with at this time of year is one of "Santa's elf" running amok on his behalf. But there is something about Holly that keeps her in his mind and starts his libido complicating matters when he's near her. In the end they both do some giving and receiving and end up with the best thing in life and that is love.

In the true tradition of Christmas stories this one leaves you feeling warm and happy and gives you the sense of peace that the important things in life are still just as important. The gift of family, friends, life and love.

In this book we start with Holly who has been given the task of secret Santa to a guy called Marcus. Marcus doesn't accept the gifts Holly has been leaving for him because he is unsure of why she is leaving them and having to deal with the first Christmas without his wife Marcus just wants to be alone. But unknown to him, Holly is in need to do this because she has lacked the closeness with her family that normally comes at Christmas.
We see the couple work through there past problems and grow so close together.

This story was so much more then I was expecting, it was so emotional and I found my self crying like a baby. I love Kristine's work because I find her story's have a way of making you feel like your on the journey with the characters not just reading about them. What a roller coaster ride for your heat this book was, I was so sat on the edge of my seat not just wanting to know what was going to happen next BUT needing to know. This book has something for every one, Laughter, Romance, Passion what more could a reader want from a book. If you are looking for a gift for someone for Christmas then I'm going to say that this is the perfect gift. A wonderful Christmas story to give someone you love for a Christmas gift.

I'm going to be honest here, i usually stick to strictly Paranormal Romance, but after having talked to Kristine on FB, i purchased this ebook and havent regretted that decision at all.

Im on Chapter 8 at the time of this review, and since i really only started reading it 2 nights ago, that should speak volumes as to the quality of the story. Ive found it hard to stop reading, but forced myself to put it down when im at work because it would be hard to explain why filing is making me sob. The story is heartwarming, heartbreaking and it has me fully under its spell.

Kristine has made the characters so real to me that i can literally hear their voices clearly while reading the story. Holly is adorable and funny, Jilly is amazing and fiesty and so incredibly close to my rl bff that its almost eerie really, Marcus ive both loved and hated at different times in the book.

In my opinion, there is nothing in this book that will leave a reader disappointed, aside from the fact that it does eventually end.

Well done Kristine, well done!!

Secret Santa by Kristine Cheney, who is a good friend of mine, is a beautiful and emotional read that will capture your attention as well as your heart! Be sure to have tissues close!

The best thing about Kristine's writing is that she paints a picture for her readers. A scene that is so real, and tragic that it is hard to believe that it's just words on a page, or an ereader. Secret Santa made me believe that miracles again.

I have been a fan of Mrs. Cheney since I fell in love with her Spartan books, which I highly recommend, and this short novel only drove home how much I love her writing style. Plus, all the men she creates are so charming, sexy, and slightly tortured.

Also.... COVER LOVE!!!!! <3

If you're looking for a wonderful story about miracles and true love that is perfect for the upcoming holidays, this is the book for you!

Excellent!! Steamy and tear inducing!!

Sizzling, sweet, spicy and everything nice! Secret Santa by Kristine Cheney is a delightfully fun and heartwarming story that many will quickly and easily fall in love with. Though short, this is a story that offers so many delightful aspects. There is excellent character development, true caring and unselfishness, great story line and a liberal dose of steaminess that will curl reader's toes.

I absolutely fell in love with Marcus and Holly. Their chemistry steamed from the pages and I adored both of their personalities. Secret Santa is a definite hit! I read it in one setting and can't wait to read more by Kristine Cheney!

This book had me glued to the screen.. I can easily say this is one of the best books Ive read in quite awhile.. This is such an emotional read and I teared up several times and caught myself talking to the Kindle as well.. My only complaints are 1. MORE! I wish this were longer because I wanted to read more about Holly and Marcus 2. I wish there would have been a complete love scene in the book.. The two "almost" scenes were pretty perfect IMO- not squeaky clean but not porn-like either.. I have to admit I was put off at first and really skeptical (sp?) because of all the good reviews on Amazon but I am so glad I risked it :)

This was a short story I picked up because of the authors self-promotion. I don’t think I would have bought it otherwise. Secret Santa is the story of Holly Gordon who loves Christmas and playing Secret Santa for some of the folks around town. It is in this capacity that Holly meets Marcus Jenner. Who makes Scrooge look like a softy. The reason I don’t usually get books like this is because they have an unfortunate tendency to be either too saccharine or too maudlin. I must commend Ms. Cheney as this story while being sweet and sentimental never crossed the line.

I bought this book on a whim. It was late, I was browsing on my NOOK and happened to come across it. The premise sounded promising so I figured why not. I should listen to these whims more often! This story was so heartwarming and sad that even though I knew there would be a HEA, I still found myself getting teary eyed. Definitely and author I'll be following in the future.

This was a cute, syrupy sweet little holiday story to read during the Christmas season. A heartwarming tale of a broken man and the spirited woman out to turn things around for him. It's tinged with sadness, but overall it's a hopeful happily ever after.

This story really tugged at my heartstrings and reminded me of the true meaning of Christmas. It even lifted my spirits too and I enjoyed the turn of every page. I must admit that a piece of my heart and soul was left in the pages of this sweet, sweet story. This is a beautiful story of love, compassion and what Christmas is really all about. A Scrooge was turned into a believer once again, with the heart of the most beautiful soul that was bound to give heart whole heart and soul to make one Christmas bright. This story has an incredible ending with a magnificent turnout. This story was so inspiring. It's a magical story that made me made me cry, laugh, and smile. I am now a true believer that Secret Santas do exist. I highly recommend this adorable Christmas story to enjoy, but be warned, this is tissue box worthy.

Whoa nelly! Uhhh that was a lot of things meshed together. Leave the poor hero alone! Goodness! Just drop the gifts and go! And love from outer space with these two, just boom done, in love. Pretty ridiculous story overall but happy ending and some Christmas.

I met author, Kristine Cheney at an event earlier this year, and based on her description of her books alone, I ended up buying two of them. Secret Santa is the first one I've read, and I'm sorry to say that I wasn't overly impressed. The story is a very sweet one, and the premise is something I would typically enjoy. It also contained several of my favorite romance themes. Ms. Cheney, herself, seemed like a very nice lady too, so I really wanted to like her book and thought I would. Unfortunately, none of these things could fully rescue this story from the author's extensive over-writing that was badly in need of an editor. Her overuse of adjectives and adverbs, her tendency to spend paragraphs describing each and every setting and each and every character, even the bit players, as well as her use of some truly eye-roll inducing purple prose bogged down what could have been a fabulous read.

The main saving grace of the novella is that the hero and heroine are both likable and relatable characters. Holly is a sweet, young woman who loves participating in the town's Secret Santa program every year. It brings her great joy to give gifts to those in need. Being estranged from her own family, she really has no one on whom to depend except her best friend, Jilly. Only a few close acquaintances even know that Holly is very ill and desperately in need of a Christmas miracle herself, but that doesn't stop her from her holiday mission of delivering twelve gifts to a handsome stranger whose disposition resembles Ebeneezer Scrooge. During the previous year, Marcus suffered a devastating loss which caused him to withdraw from everyone. He also has no family, which is part of why he's on the Secret Santa list, but he's none too happy when Holly begins stalking him with gifts. Still, he's attracted to her and deep down is obviously a caring man. Once he finds out about Holly's plight, he's prepared to do anything to help. Marcus and Holly made a cute couple and the way things played out was undeniably heartwarming, but I still couldn't help feeling like their love for one another was a bit forced, like it was only there for the sake of the plot rather than developing as an organic part of the story. For a sweet romance, the sexual tension was pretty high, with a couple of almost love scenes, but in spite of that, I just didn't feel the romance on the deep level I would have preferred.

Overall, the premise of Secret Santa was extremely appealing and had a lot of promise, but lacked in the execution. I appear to be in the minority on this one though. Based on the high ratings at Amazon, GoodReads and elsewhere, apparently, most readers were able to overlook the excessively wordy writing style which was, in my opinion, better suited to poetry than prose. Between the short length and the mediocre writing, it wasn't really worth the full paperback price of $6.99 which I paid, so for anyone who wants to give this novella a try, I would definitely recommend the $0.99 e-book option. Secret Santa had it's good points and wasn't really a bad story per se, but the weak romance and having to wade through a flood of words to find the plot, made for a somewhat frustrating experience for me and a so-so wrap up to my holiday reading this year.

I downloaded this book (on my new Kindle! Eek! There goes my paycheck.) because all I've heard from my girls Tammy and Mel is, "Her books are fantastic!" and "Kristine is such a sweetie!" so I just had to see what all the hubbub was about. I recently downloaded all of her books, actually, but this is the first one I picked to read - I was in a "human" mood.

When I started it, I didn't think it would live up to the hype. Just because I'm a disbeliever like that. But I started it this Friday morning, and I finished it Friday evening. I was captured from the very first page and simply could not put it down! Holly is such a cute character, and Marcus is a dick with a backstory, has such a miserable reason for being a jerk I couldn't make myself hate him. The background characters are well developed and the chapters flow seamlessly from one to the other. I found myself laughing like a maniac one moment to sobbing openly in a public space the next.

I also like how Marcus and Holly were not behaving innocently at some points of the novel and I wasn't wincing while reading it, nor was I flushing beet red because, hello, I was in public when I read this baby. It let me know exactly what was going on and what these two were thinking without becoming so overly-graphic I wanted to shoot myself. It is insanely well written and I wish it was longer!

Which leads to my complaint. The only problem I had was how quickly Holly and Marcus fell all over each other. I mean, it would make sense if they were teenagers who didn't know any better, but they appear to be full-grown adults, who think they're bunnies. I know, I'm picky, but I love long, drawn-out love-stories that get you to the point of wanting to strangle a character because they're so flipping oblivious, and this story could've been drug out to at least 300+ pages.. And the only reason I bring this up is because I think it was so good, I want more. But oh, well. It's good either way.

Only other thing was when they were behaving like bunnies (or just doing some very nice leave-it-to-my-imagination touching and looking and thinking, which I find quite *swoon*esque), words got repeated a lot, and there was a lot of "masculine" and "feminine" said. I found it a little odd, as if we needed to be reminded which one was which.. That's all, though, I suppose. Just my personal taste.

All in all, I think this was a marvelous little story! It made me laugh, cry, shake my head and smile at all the right times, and made me feel like I was right in the story, watching these characters interact! Delightful!

The title is in more ways than one exactly what it implies. Yes we meet two people brought together by the spirit of Christmas and yes the gift is a unforgettable surprise. We meet Holly (yes indeed a perfect Christmissy name), who likes to play secret Santa to the folks in her town and this is how she meets the stunning and remarkably grumpy Marcus.

Marcus has had is ups and downs in the love department but he soon finds the attraction he feels towards Holly is one that is not going to just go away and soon he acts on the impulse only to discover a deep secret, or what he believes to be a drug addiction and back out of the whole situation immediately.

Holly is totally head over heals in love with Marcus but of course with him thinking the needle marks on her arms are from a serious drug addiction she would rather run then stay and listen to him chasing her out of his life.

Bet your wondering what the needle marks are from huh? Well I am not going to tell you, but what I will tell you is that you will never see this one coming it will hit you with such a force that, just like me, you will be crying your eyes out and reaching for the Kleenex in no time.

Secret Santa is a short story written by the very talented Kristine Cheney that will make you laugh at some of the funniest dialogue I have read in a while and will also make you cry and wish there is something you could do for these characters to make the misery go away.

It is a tale of true love, kindness in a small town, strangers becoming friends and the real insight into the meaning of "don't judge a book, or person in this case, by it's cover".

I am no fan of tearful drama like books and I usually tend to not even try to read them to the end as life can be sad enough sometimes and I tend to like my books with mystery, love and action lots of action, but with this one I was intrigued to find out the truth about Holly and why she has those mysterious marks, and even though I bawled my eyes out I still could not stop reading and in the end I was pleasantly surprised

LOVED this story!!! Very heartwarming and will make you teary-eyed. I loved it so much I tried to find others similar to this. It had very original parts to it yet some that a few people would find clichéd. Nonetheless, it was a sweet romance that you would like to read every time you pick up a book with romance in mind. Holly is very sweet and determined to make others happy for Christmas through the community secret santa list. Her enthusiasm and innocence was very inspiring and made me want to go out and do things for others. Marcus is also very sweet and not exactly the scrooge that I might have liked him to be. He has his spoilsport moments but ends up showing his good side. I liked how he was truthful about using the gifts that he received. It was actually quite funny what he says about them since the gifts did not exactly have the results Holly thought they would. I was very disappointed when it ended. Although I have been choosing shorter stories to read, this is one of the stories that I wanted to continue and be longer than it is. Holly was truly a strong character and one of those that when they fall in love, it’s so heartbreaking to see them wanting to catch even just a small glimpse of their love. I loved how she couldn’t stop herself from going to Marcus. Marcus in turn had a wonderful part. It was the perfect timing when he comes through for her. This story was also made strong by Holly’s outspoken friend Jilly.
I hope the author writes more stories like this and that in the meantime I can find others like this ;)

2.5 stars. Now, I'm all about a good insta-love book if it makes sense, but this one didn't. Marcus dislikes her, then finds out what's going with her and automatically loves her. Holly has "love at first sight" when he is being nothing but awful towards her. Nothing even happens between them to warrant the insta-love feelings. He isn't even nice to her for most of the book, and they really don't personally interact all that much unless it's Marcus telling her how much he dislikes her. This was a quick, sad at times, insta-love holiday read, but it fell short for me. It definitely could have been a bit longer to maybe develop the feelings a bit more.....

AUTHOR: I have read (2) very good books by author Kristine Cheney which were not short stories. She has superb timing in her writings and the stories flowed. I find that short stories may not be her forté. The timing was off just a bit as the story progressed hence 4 out of 5 stars. Had this story been longer and more "detailed" Kristine would have blown me right out of the ballpark. Regardless, you WILL love the book so do not pass on reading SECRET SANTA.

SYNOPSIS –
Marcus has been chosen to receive (1) gift per day for twelve days. Holly must "secretly" deliver a gift daily to this very unresponsive, difficult and defensive man. Marcus heart is closed. Holly's is open. Love does bloom in the midst of giving. NOW READ!!!

PASSION SCALE: No Rating. This is not a steam engine romance. The emphasis is not on passion. It is on something even greater.

FAVORITE PART: Holly cannot swim. Humorous and romantic.

LEAST FAVORITE PART: Why is it that authors typecast Black people? Animated much?!

YOU WILL LIKE THIS BOOK IF YOU LIKE: Contemporary romance; Christmas

I usually avoid these type of mushy, type of love stories. I tend to read Paranormal romances. But after Reading BOTH Spartan Heart pt. I and II, and getting a recommendation from Kristine herself, i thought i would give it a go ....
and i was glad i did.
anyone wanting a teary, Xmas story with a happy ending (i did ALMOST guess the ending) then this one is for you.
No shapeshifters, no vampires, no Paranormal activity whatsoever. But a lovely written story.
I for one did cry like a big girl.
Great story for this time of year.
