Angels Fall

Charlie’s life force is fading. His only hope is an aged martial arts master in the remote reaches of China who, as far as Cappa can tell, doesn’t like him very much.

While Charlie and Cappa are away from Z-Tech, William has been raising an empire of his own — one determined to crush any who interfere with his plans for world domination. Worse, he’s sided with the only other organization who had almost succeeded in erasing Z-Tech from the global market, pitting Anne and her friends in a desperate struggle for survival.

The enemy has the advantage of numbers, but Z-Tech has Zima — a one-person army in her own right. Only time will tell if she’s enough to offset the overwhelming forces set against Z-Tech, and if San Francisco will survive their battle.

The trouble here is that the story is quite complex, and I wouldn't want to give away spoilers....
Anne Perrin has developed close friendships and new love in her group of friends -- though she hasn't abandoned old friends, either; her BFF is along for the ride. But there are problems both inside and out, as their vampire enemies are becoming more powerful, and Charlie, the head of Z-Tech, is suffering from a malady that can't be cured by any normal means. So the team splits up, and Charlie takes his COO and friend Cappa along to visit an old mentor in hopes that he can help. Everybody else will work on the myriad problems at home. It...doesn't go too well.

Anne and the gang find a new group of vampires who are very different, and they need to find out whether they're friend or foe. At the same time, the regular (evil) vampires have allied with Z-Tech's rival company, the arms manufacturer Orwing, and are planning a massive attack on the company's compound. There's all kinds of stuff going on. I honestly did not see the last twist coming. It was a doozy, and I'm really looking forward to seeing how it all plays out.

The story is complicated and action-packed; it hardly ever slows down. Southwick brings in elements that we don't normally see in a techno-thriller, to good effect, and there are vampires, plasma guns, martial arts, mysterious malevolent beings, and what I guess I should describe as a few psychic powers. And androids! Lots of androids, maybe a cyborg or two!

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Angels Fall is the third in the 'Angel' series by Ryan Southwick. The question asked by everyone to varying degrees is - does the story deliver the same or better story and writing. The short answer is YES.

The story picks up where the second book left off with Charlie and Cappa continuing their journey. The author asks a subtle yet powerful and thought provoking question in these early chapters: just because something is not human, does it have a soul? The answer to me seems to have a far-reaching consequence that can apply to our advancing technology in robotics and artificial intelligence.

The writing is smooth with few bumps or misplaced tempo changes. It moves forward like the flow of a river, constant, with changes of mood and speed that all work naturally together to carry the reader through the adventure.

The story itself moves from San Francisco, to China, and back again as both sides work behind the scenes to build up their resources and create counters for their opponent's expected actions.
(Apologies for the vagaries, but I am doing my best to avoid spoilers so you can have the fun of discovering the rich story yourself)
The story here goes from a sedate time of exploration to an armed conflict, which has triumph and loss aplenty for the main characters. I enjoyed this book thoroughly and will be waiting for the next one.

What a great mixture of sci-fi, urban fantasy, and techno-fic with a little romance thrown in! The tech part didn't delve so deeply into the science that I was overwhelmed by theory/jargon and the romance was just that, romance and not explicit sex. I'm really looking forward to the next book (fingers crossed) in the series

I enjoyed this story, despite it being different than books I usually read. You can tell that the author is very knowledgeable about technology, which is a definite plus. 3.5 stars. Worth a read.
