An appealing story of life in Victorian England where an abandoned orphan boy of 7 who is a Mudlark foraging bits and pieces in the low tide mud along the Thames. Finding a piece with Queen Victoria on it, he gets an idea to walk 20 miles to Windsor Castle to see Queen Victoria who is isolated in mourning (20-some years after her husband's death). His entrance into the Castle finally persuades her to restart seeing the English people.
The mudlark is an orphan boy who goes to meet Queen Victoria because he heard that she was the "Mother of England", or so says Benjamin Disreali when he defends the boy. Read the book to decide. It's a great read.
Charming story and beautiful writing. We saw the movie with Irene Dunne playing the queen. The book tells a much richer story. I think it's based on a true event. A masterful weaving of characters and plot lines that sometimes weighed down the main story but in the end each element was worth including.
I think this is a novel of pure delight. A beautiful story about an innocent young mudlark boy who wanders into Queen Victoria's castle and what comes afterward. Touching
