During the past decade scientists, public policy analysts, politicians, and laypeople, have become increasingly aware of the importance of ethical conduct in scientific research. In this timely book, David B. Resnik introduces the reader to the ethical dilemmas and questions that arise in scientific research.
Some of the issues addressed in the book include ethical decision-making, the goals and methods of science, and misconduct in science. The Ethics of Science also discusses significant case studies such as human and animal cloning, the Challenger accident and Tobacco research. This is essential reading for anyone who wishes to understand the importance of ethics in science.
This is far from being the most engaging pieces, but it is super insightful for those in the scientific community – or even those who are simply interested in science. It’s to the point, mostly concise, and easy enough to get through.
I’d certainly recommend it to the scientists out there, especially those earlier in their career.
A good introduction to the ethics of science. Most will find the material dry, but if you are a scientist, you will appreciate how Resnik puts into words the actions that make science ethical and moral. I also appreciate his development over the years, leading to his very best work, The Price of Truth.
