Since the beginning of time, an elite group of human warriors called Wardens protected mankind from all supernatural threats. Born into this destiny, a Warden’s duties passed from father to son…until the supernaturals made peace and the Wardens were no longer needed. Since then, knowledge of their existence has faded into myth and legend.Recently, the peace has been broken as civil wars and infighting fragment the supernatural species and the Wardens are needed again. One Warden, Rev, could not be more unprepared for what lies ahead. In an instant, he goes from college student to literally fighting for his life as he’s forced to enter a dark world he wants no part of. To make matters worse, his stubborn, by-the-book mentor, Jess, has little patience for a Warden who’s inexperienced and bumbling at best.Just as Rev thinks things couldn’t be worse, he realizes he’s falling for his hard-ass mentor. Will Jess return the feelings? Or will Rev be dealing with a broken heart while trying to save the world?

I really liked the first 70 to 80 percent of the book. Up until they had sex I didn’t like that at all. Didn’t like the reasons or the way they had sex and didn’t like the story after that. I never felt the connection between these guys and at the end when they were all I love you blah blah I guess I just rolled my eyes because I didn’t see/get any of that.
I think I liked it a lot because it was connected to her Drone Vampire series and I wish more of those books would come out.
This book never explained anything. It never said what Rev was prophesied to be or even what a warden was or a guardian. Why did they need guardians all the guardian did was watch and be an asshole
It reminded me a lot of Buffy The Vampire Slayer of course I enjoy Buffy more. But Rev seemed like the chosen one (Buffy) Jess was the guardian (a less useful Giles AKA Buffy’s watcher) and off course he had his Willow and Zander characters but in Buffy they explained stuff and it made sense to me. In this we are just thrown into a world and if it wasn’t so similar to Buffy I would have no idea what was going on
An enjoyable, light read, but I had the feeling the balance between action/realism and humor/sarcasm was lost. Both characters were a bit too much like all of the other stock characters in this author's collection. You have the strong silent type who is almost always paired with the brat who likes to dance or Lady Gaga/Kesha or Glee. For once I'd like to see some different characters.
Not to say i didn't enjoy this story. There are too few stories that make me laugh and combine action with humor. Although the balance between this one was just a bit lost. It started out pretty serieus (story wise) and then grew very light and humorous.
Nice start to this new series... which may or may not be a redundant sentence, but I'm too fucking tired to try and work that out.
Anywho, I like it when this author flips the stereotypes; for eg, cutie Shane from the Lost Shifters being a scarifying assassin, twinky Rev being the kick-arse Warden prophesied, etc. Really like it actually. Shane is one my fave characters list. Vicious bastard that he is. <3
Thumbs-up to seeing a snarky Oracle as well. So much better than the overly-dramatic, zombie-like chicks you usually get in PNRs.
Also, cool cover. One of the better ones from this publisher by far.
And, geezus kerrist, but I'm babbling this morning. I obviously need more coffee.
Pretty good m/m paranormal romance about a guy who has to leave college in order to fulfill his destiny as a Warder and protect humanity from a paranormal threat. This one needed a bit more polish and development to really shine.
This sounds like a spin-off series. There’s just too much irrelevant information like it’s being repeated from another book. So far, it feels like she’s making it up the rest as she goes along. It’s a little messy.
There are if course no female Warden and their way of reproducing is incredibly sexist. But at least there’s a female Guardian.
As usual, the editing sucks. “Wrenched” instead of “retched,” “tired” instead of “tried,” “sliver” instead of “silver,” etc. There are tons of fans out there that would be willing to copy edit for free to get an advanced look at a book or free copies of books or whatever. Just reading it normally like I did would help catch most of these issues.
I think Ari is going to be her little Shane-like character in this series. (Shane the assassin from the Lost Shifters series.) They even all wear cloaks which is the dumbest thing for fighting. It might look cool but it would just get in the way.
There was really mild danger (he dispatches one of the hardest demons to kill in one stroke). No peril, no Oh my god he’s gonna die scene, no hospital scene, not even he’s really injured I’m worried. The closest was the sex scene which is just not sexy.
Everything went perfectly of course. Any problem was easily dealt with or solved or fixed by an almost omniscient being. Sooooo boring. I see why there are only three books in this series. I have no desire to read further. Why can’t she write more Lost Shifters?
I love Stephanie Hecht. I read her books over and over again because sometimes I don't feel like getting to know a new place and new people. The worlds she creates are already home and I love that she writes stories for every character in a series.
You may not have picked up on my love for this author due to the 2 star rating but my ratings are very specific. She got a two here because I feel like this was given a two effort. I realize the first book in a series is always going to detail the world more than the relationship but this book took that to a whole other level. There was no build. If you don't like insta-love this is not the right book for you.
I think the wardens will be a great series because with Hecht, that's what you have to look forward to. Her books are too short and often skip many milestones in a relationships that make me connect to the characters and invest in their longevity as a couple.
However, these book fell flatter than usual because there was very little flow. The characters jumped from one thing to another. They seemed to be the way through which to tell the story of the wardens as opposed to a part of the story; their relationship a catalyst for what happens in the next two books.
I love that this is part of the Drone Chronicles though, which is definitely my favorite series of hers. And Jonas finally gets his story!
You are one of my all time favorite M/M Writers. However, I really wish that you would make your books a little longer and make the burn a little slower.
Overall, this was a good book. Yes, there were spelling and grammar errors but the story line and the characters were interesting. It probably could have been a little longer with more background on characters and world structure but still satisfactory. While I thought this was a good book, I dont think it was good enough to warrant the price of the next book in the series. I don't want to pay $3.99 for 73 pages. If the price changes or it changes to KU, than I would be more than happy to continue the series.
After binge reading the Lost Shifters series I went looking for other works by this author, I really enjoyed this introduction to a new series with Wardens being trained to fight evil
Stephani Hecht has done it again. She has created a series that is absolutely Chocolicious. In this first book, she does quite a bit of world building. The peace that allowed the warrior protectors, known as Night Wardens, to go into semi-retirement is broken. Rick, a Warden, has been allowed to go off to college; an activity he thinks is a complete waste of time.
When evil shows up on campus, Rick’s calm little world disintegrates in a heartbeat. He is thrust into a role he was literally born to fulfill. Luckily, he has a sexy Guardian to watch his back.
I loved every aspect of this story. Stephani Hecht took her time building up sexual tension between Rick and Jess. But, damn…when she finally let them tangle in the sheets…damn!
One of the nice things I like most about Hecht series is how she introduces main characters from later books as secondary plays in the current book. I’m dying to know if Ari and Adam are going to be a couple of if she has other plans for them. And what kind of man could tame Brad?
All in all, Night Terror is a fabulous read. It is gritty and nasty, funny and sexy and absolutely perfect.
It started off well but from there it just didn't work for me. The story felt rushed and it just wasn't as exciting/cool as I thought. The mysterious premonition for Rev made me think there would be more to him than meets the eye but I didn't feel as if he was a strong character. I had no growing attachment for either MC's and at the start I liked Naamah bit after a bit she got a bit annoying. Ari was the only character I liked in this book and I look forward to reading more about him.
good start to the series I like it when things are not over explained and we jump right into the world. Not too many characters either - I hate having to make a list at the start of a series to keep track (I did that with Drone Vamps series)
