About the author

Leif Gustav Willy Persson - better known as Leif GW Persson - is a Swedish criminologist and novelist. He was a professor in criminology at the Swedish National Police Board from 1992 to 2008.

He is known for his crime fiction novels and for his regular appearances as an expert commentator on notable crime cases in television and newspapers. Between 1999 and 2009 he participated as an expert commentator on the television show Efterlyst (Swedish TV program, equivalent of America's Most Wanted) on TV3. Since 2010, he is the expert commentator of Veckans Brott - roughly translated into Weekly Crimes or Crimes of the Week - on SVT.

This novel inspires me to identify a new genre in mystery fiction: the police dysfunctional.

Given the current interest in Scandinavian mystery and my enthusiasm for the Beck series (Per Wahlöö and Maj Sjöwall), the Wallander novels by Henning Mankell, the Millennium series by Stieg Larsson, the Harry Hole books by Jo Nesbø, and books by Kjell Eriksson, the prospect of this book was irresistible. The cover blurbs looked great, the author has a bunch of cred, what's not to like?

Let me list seven:

• It's OK to skip around in time; that's an interesting technique that lets you present parts of the story in the best order; and it can keep your reader off-balance if that's what you want. But you have to give some clues about when you're skipping ahead or back and how many years. Maybe it would be clearer to somebody who lived in Sweden at the time, but dang, at one point I thought I was in the 90s or the 00s, when somebody said there's this new disease called AIDS and I was yanked back into the 80s.

• A related issue: It is not a spoiler to say that the plot includes concerns about the safety of the prime minister. Are we told whether that prime minister is Olof Palme? We are not. Why keep it a secret? Even we Americans know that's an issue. If we were told the year instead of just the date, we could orient ourselves. It's as if we're following a character who gets a key to a book repository in Dallas and we're not told it's 1963. What? You think we're going to be surprised? No, just annoyed.

• Many important characters are identified by role, not by name: the prime minister, of course, but also his special assistant; the Stockholm Chief Constable; the assistant's mute housekeeper; and a few others. Having one of these makes sense and focuses our attention on him. Having three or more is confusing: do they have no names because they're unimportant? Because they're so important, so high-up, we're not allowed to learn their real names?

• Not to be a feminazi or anything, but there are very few women characters, and the ones we get are one-dimensional. Of course, there are a lot of one-dimensional guys as well, particularly the endless parade of racist, piggish policemen.

• It's interesting to have a character say something and then be told immediately that they're thinking something different. But Persson uses that device constanty in this book. Makes you hanker for Jane Austen, where you often sense such contradictions without being hit over the head with them.

• The story has many instances of people doing very bad things. Too many of them have no apparent motive beyond the sociopathology of the perpetrators.

• Our stereotype of Scandinavians is two-pronged: you have the sunny, blond, buff, ecologically- and sexually-aware bike-riders; and you have the Bergmanesque, dark, brooding drinkers, prone to suicide. Crime fiction naturally tends towards the latter; in a mystery/thriller, we expect the noir side. What I did not expect was a the depth of resignation and cynicism Persson can express. That is not the problem; the problem is taking 550 pages to express it. (Little Murders, in contrast, runs under 80 pages.) If I'm going to work that hard, and if I get foreshadowing of redemption until maybe page 475, I want some redemption—or at least hope. One star: for deeply disappointed.

Persson είναι ο ορισμός του ''αστυνομικού μυθιστορήματος'' (Police procedural) και είναι βασισμένη στο πραγματικό γεγονός της δολοφονίας του Ούλωφ Παλμε τον Φεβρουάριο του 1986 μετά από επίσκεψη του ίδιου και της συζύγου του σε έναν κεντρικό κινηματογράφο της Στοκχόλμης. Στο βιβλίο αναφέρονται πολλά στοιχεία και γεγονότα που αφορούν τον πρωθυπουργο (στο βιβλίο ο Persson δεν του δίνει κάποιο συγκεκριμένο όνομα, είναι απλά ο ''πρωθυπουργός''), τα οποία έχουν αρκετά μεγάλο ενδιαφέρον καθώς σκιαγραφούν το πορτραίτο ένος πανέξυπνου, ρομαντικού και ιδεαλιστή ανθρώπου που από το ξεκίνημα του κατόρθωνε να δημιουργεί τα πιο αντιφατικά συναισθήματα σε όσους τον γνώριζαν. Μέσα από την ιστορία της ζωής του πρωθυπουργού, ο Persson κάνει μια αναδρομή στην σύχρονη ιστορία της πατρίδας του, αλλά και των υπόλοιπων σκανδιναβικών χωρών, από την περίφημη ''ουδετερότητα'' που τήρησαν στον Β' Π.Π. μέχρι και τις ψυχροπολεμικές σχέσεις με την ''αιώνια αντίπαλο'' της Σουηδίας την γειτονική Ρωσία. Στην πλοκή αυτού του πρώτου βιβλίου της τριλογίας του, ο Persson αναμειγνύει τα ανώτερα στελέχη της αστυνομίας, τις μυστικές υπηρεσίες των Η.Π.Α. και Ρωσίας, τους ειδικούς συμβούλους των υπουργών και πολλούς άλλους. Παρατήρησα ότι σε αρκετές κριτικές του βιβλίου οι αναγνώστες παραπονούνται για τον υπερβολικά μεγάλο αριθμό των χαρακτήρων, μια εύστοχη κριτική αφού ειδικά στις πρώτες 150-200 σελίδες (από τις 700 συνολικά) ο αναγνώστης πρέπει να είνα ιαπόλυτα συγκεντρωμένος για να θυμάται το ποιός είναι ποιός. Ωστόσο στην πορεία αυτό παύει να απότελει πρόβλημα και αυτό οφείλεται στην εξαιρετική πένα του Persson που γράφει ποιοτικά και παρά το περίπλοκο της ιστορίας και το πολυπρόσωπο των χαρακτήρων κατορθώνει να μην κουράζει.
Βέβαια, δεν πρέπει να ξεχνάμε ότι πρόκειται για ένα μυθοπλαστικό έργο, γεννημένο από την ζωηρή φαντασία του συγγραφέα και τα γεγονότα που περιγράφονται είναι στην μεγάλη τους πλειοψηφία επινοημένα από τον Persson. Παρά ταύτα, πρέπει να ομολογήσω ότι διαβαζοντας το βιβλίο μπήκα στην διαδικασία να ψάξω περαιτέρω για την υπόθεση Πάλμε και να εξακριβώσω ποιά σημεία του βιβλίου ανταποκρίνονται στην πραγματικότητα και ποιά όχι.
Τέλος, να επισημάνω για όσους δεν το γνωρίζουν ότι η τηλεοπτική σειρά ''En pilgrims död'' (''Death of a Pilgrim''), γυρισμένη το 2013 και με πρωταγωνιστή έναν από τους σημαντικότερους σύγχρονους σουηδούς ηθοποιούς, τον ''χαμαιλέοντα'' Rolf Lassgård είναι βασισμένη στην τριλογία του Persson και καταφέρνει να μεταφέρει το ύφος του βιβλίου στην μικρή οθόνη.
Το συστήνω ανεπιφύλακτα, ειδικά σε όσους αρέσουν τα πολιτικά θρίλερ.

Stieg Larsson’s Millenium Trilogy has made quite an impact on the reading public, but many of the themes covered in those novels appeared first in this earlier award-winning thriller, published in Sweden in 2002 and only translated to English in 2010.
The sly, sarcastic tone of this story leads to a disquieting unease and eventually dread as Persson’s depiction of political corruption zeros in on an assassination. The story unfolds through the viewpoints of multiple characters, distinctly drawn. The author has used real events in this novelisation in much the same way that Charles McCarry addressed the assassination of John F. Kennedy in his spy novel, The Tears of Autumn. It’s a challenging read, but a very rewarding one.

For those of you who are looking for new sensational authors from Scandinavia: Leif Persson is a Swedish criminologist and novelist who was a professor in criminology at the Swedish National Police Board from 1992 to 2008. Between Summer's Longing and Winter's End is one of his relatively recent works translated into English which has got notable International success so far.

A Brief Summary:

The death of an unknown American named John Krassner in Stockholm, though tragic, seems like a simple suicide case. The young man seemingly fell from a window in a student dorm. A small investigation starts, just in case there will be any inquiries in the future.

But when Superintendent Lars Martin Johansson begins to delve beneath the layers of corruption, incompetence and violence currently strangling the Stockholm police department, he uncovers a complex web of treachery, politics and espionage.

Johansson quickly realizes that there is nothing routine about this little death as it quickly catapults him from mere domestic drama straight to the rotten heart of Sweden's government.

Our Take:

Here is what we think of this book in one line: A captivating and defining fictional account of the unsolved 1986 assassination of Swedish Prime Minister Olof Palme—an event that triggered one of the biggest criminal investigation in recorded history.

The book is at the same time fascinating and shocking. Persson provides a realistic account of the way the Swedish police force work, and introduces us to an array of different characters; mostly incompetent and perverse police officers concerned mostly with position, power, drinking and sex. We also meet cynical politicians who are willing to do almost anything to keep their seats.

The explanation of the events and the scenes are very believable and the author masterfully takes the reader to a dark journey filled with uncertainty and psychological twists. At times Persson uses dark humor and funny remarks but in general this novel fits into the category of drama.

This book was an exciting read and we recommend it to the fans of Scandinavian Crime fiction.

It was a rainy weekend in San Francisco, so I finally finished Persson's long, much-heralded ("one of the best Swedish novels of all time") crime novel – more out of a sense of duty rather than curiosity. Last month I'd tossed aside Paul Murray's Skippy Dies because virtually nothing had happened after 300 pages. So I persevered.

The opening is as dark & droll as any fan of Scandinavian mysteries could hope – a doggie out for its walk is bludgeoned by a shoe tumbling after a body tumbling out of a window. But the stage soon congests with a crowd of indistinguishable Swedes. Soon I wished I'd bought the digital edition, so I could search backwards for each character as he popped up only to disappear again. By the end I realized none of them mattered.

Persson has a way with snarky dialogue: a character says something, which is immediately qualified by what he didn't say.

"You have kids yourself," Waltin had said; this was more a statement than a question, and of course he'd already known the answer.

"Unfortunately," Wijnbladh had answered, "my wife and I have not had any success in that regard."

And in no other regard, it appears, despite the fact that she can hardly be accused of a lack of willingness, Waltin had thought, making an effort to preserve an indifferent and sufficiently regretful expression.

Entertaining at first, this eventually palls. As does the story itself. The core conspiracy is laboriously elucidated from a tangle of perspectives, and it's utterly underwhelming. The conclusion doesn't conclude; Persson just pokes us in the eye a few times. Somewhere I read that this is the first of a trilogy, but I've done my duty. The next two are going out the window and the doggies be damned.

At the center of this Swedish espionage thriller is the death of an American journalist, John P. Krassner, circa 1988. Was it an accident, a suicide, or murder? The facts known at the opening is that first his body and then his boot falls from the 16th floor of a student dormitory. The boot struck and killed a Pomeranian named Charlie. Charlie's owner, Vindel, is trying to recount the seconds between the body and the boot falling from the window.

After this wry and arresting opening, the reader is plunged into a dense and plodding world of Swedish politics. The characters and their careers are portrayed in all their Byzantine splendor, from the intricacies of the police and secret police (SePo) departments; to the police surveillance squad and covert operations; inside the Swedish Parliament; as well as the connections to WW II, the Cold War, and the U.S. central intelligence agency. There are many circuitous routes in the midst of this story, from the Russian communists to the beginnings of Sweden's system of neutrality.

Lars Johansson is a solitary man, a "real policeman," and the police superintendent on his way to becoming the head of the National Bureau of Criminal Investigation. He is a perspicacious type who seems to see around corners and figure out how things stand. The case comes to his attention from his best friend, Detective Chief Inspector, Bo Jarnebring, (from the department's surveillance squad). He received Krassner's belongings, including his boots, which had a hollow heel and a slip of paper stating "an honorable cop, Lars Johansson," complete with Johansson's address and phone number and a key to a safety deposit box.

Additionally, there appears to be a suicide note typed on Krassner's Panasonic and parts of a manuscript of a book documenting and revealing spy secrets and transcripts of the West. Lars had never heard of Krassner before, and this begins his investigation into the case.

While Johansson is in the U.S. for some FBI training seminars, he follows up with Krassner's ex-girlfriend, Sarah Weissman, to seek out more information. This proves valuable and sets him on a trail of espionage leading back to WW II and the OSS. Krassner's uncle was a spy and an intransigent Irish racist who passed on his traits and his personal effects to his nephew.

In the meantime, Erik Berg, the head of SePo, is apprised of the case. He brings in his best friend, Claes Waltin, who he doesn't fully trust. Waltin is the Police Superintendent and head of external operations. He is also a psychopath and a sexual deviant who keeps his perversions under wraps and uses his shrewd talent to further his personal and career ambitions.

As story unfolds, a web is manifested that expands into several areas of the government, covering a wide range of people and bureaus, including the Ministry of Justice. The author, while keeping the reader with one eye blind, teases out the facts gradually and uncovers a tremendous trail of secrets that connect, interconnect, and even disconnect various departments and governments.

There is a huge cast of characters, made up primarily of assorted members of the police force. Moreover, there are other colorful people and events, such as an alcoholic professor, a "deep throat" type, female exploitation by Waltin, a heavy-lidded special advisor to the prime minister, and the fascinating childhoods of Waltin and Johansson. And there are enough hearty, heavy meals to whet the appetite and gain ten pounds!

I was intrigued by the elaborate story and the complexities of plot and character. The problem was that, after the droll opening, the narrative style becomes ponderous and almost crushes under its own weight. The pace was labored and read much like a text or chronicle. It was too often too dry, and would have been improved with more of the sly levity that characterized the opening pages. Instead, it was frequently fraught with detail and tedious profiling. But his acumen--what makes people tick--kept me wanting more.

Moreover, the book was highly engaging and entertaining when Persson portrayed certain incompetent members of the police force and their operations as comparable to Keystone Kops adventures. And, in the end, Persson doesn't let the reader down. We eventually understand that Krassner is at the center of a Gordian Knot with many fibers.

After reading the author's bio sketch, I understood his style better. Persson has chronicled the political and social development of modern Swedish society for more than three decades in his novels. He has served as an adviser to the Swedish Ministry of Justice and is Sweden's most renowned psychological profiler.

It was Charlie, age thirteen, who saved the life of Vindel, age fifty-five. At least that's how Vindel described it at the preliminary police hearing.

"If Charlie hadn't looked up and pulled me to the side, that damn thing would've hit me in the skull and I wouldn't be sitting here now."



Nope, can't do it, just plain confusing - met 53 thousand people in the first 53 pages all given 53 nano seconds so how am I expected to grow with that.

Was SO interested in the subject matter too. :O(

This is the first of a trilogy that traces the the history of Swedish politics from post WWII social democrats to the present day rise of far right groups.

Book #1 is a biting political satire that follows a whack of characters who all have ties to the country’s police & secret security services. It culminates with the assassination of the prime minister, obviously based on the murder of Olof Palme in 1986.

Just as in real life, multiple theories are presented as to who pulled the trigger. The police are depicted as a bloated organization with incompetents ruling individual fiefdoms. There is little coordination which results in different departments stepping all over each others’ investigations as they rush to make it to the nearest bar for last call.

Overlooking this mess is the “secret” police, a type of big brother organization that isn’t much better. It has multiple levels with ridiculous names that spend more time spying on each other than civilians. At times I couldn’t help thinking it was like something out of Monty Python with secret police, very secret police & really, really secret police. Almost to a man, these are despicable people engaged in a constant game of “he who collects the most dirt on everyone else” wins.

There are also characters from all the factions that have been suspected of killing Palme. They include Kurds, South Africans, CIA agents & traitors from within the Swedish government.

It’s a well written, intricate tale of spy vs spy & the author clearly know his stuff. But due to its dense, slow moving literary style I’d really only recommend for those with an interest in Swedish politics or the Palme case. In real life, the search for his killer is still open & is now the most expensive murder investigation in history (currently at about $45 million dollars over the last 30 years).

If I could give this half a star I would. I found myself racing through the pages trying to find the bits that made this "an award winning Swedish classic"-- "the greatest Swedish crime novel of all time" to quote the blurbs on the book. I've read most of the translated Swedish crime fiction and thoroughly enjoyed the books. Never have a read a book that drug on so badly as this one. I hated the characters-- male dominated abusive language about women-- maybe that was the way things were in the time period the story covers, but it means there is no single character i can 'champion" or empathize with in the entire book.

I wanted to finish it only because I didn't want to feel I had wasted money on buying it, but by page 494 out of 639 I decided it was better to have wasted the money than to waste any more of my life on reading it!

Recently I was in a bookstore in Stockholm and when I inquired about Swedish mystery writers other than Henning Mankell. The owner of the store suggested I purchase BETWEEN SUMMER'S LONGING AND WINTER'S END by Leif G.W. Persson. I did just that and finished reading the book which I found interesting in terms of plot development but not as satisfactory as I would have hoped. The story revolves around a plot to kill the Swedish Prime Minister who in real life in 1986 was assassinated after attending a film in Stockholm. The Prime Minister who was assassinated was Olof Palme and to this day the assassin remains at large. Persson explores the workings of the Swedish justice system leading up to and after the supposed suicide death of John P. Krassner, an American who was writing a book that linked the fictional Prime Minister to the CIA and KGB following World War II. Thus the mystery begins presenting many strands that are woven throughout the narrative carrying the reader through the Post War period, the Cold War, and the collapse of the Soviet Union.

Persson's plot organization is somewhat convoluted as it presents a confusing chronology and a story line that jumps back and forth. The characters are developed fully but I got the feeling that when the author switched characters he did not identify the new person he was introducing clearly. Since the narrative lends itself to an actual assassination the book is worth reading, despite the fact that it does not flow freely at all times. What emerges from the story is Persson's theory of who killed Olof Palme in 1986. Not being fully versed in Swedish politics his theory sounds very plausible. In the end I am glad that I have read this work of fiction because it has spurred my interest in Swedish foreign and domestic policy, but I do not think the book lived up to my expectations.

Just to be clear, I really wanted to like this book. As a fan of Stieg Larsson and a few other Swedish authors, this seemed as if it would be right up my alley. Oh, but how wrong I was. I made it through 105 pages before I finally gave up. The first 10 pages were promising, but after that I got bogged down in the sheer number of characters and the complete lack of interesting or seemingly pertinent action. The only reason I made it to page 105 was because I promised myself I would give it at least 100 pages before I made a decision. Now I have to ask myself why I wasted my time slogging through those 105 pages.

I made it through 100 pages and kept waiting for a redeeming character...nada. Evidently, every Swedish policeMAN--because there are NO female characters in a 600 page book--is a misogynistic racist. And this book is compared to the Millennium Trilogy? ! According to one cop, "Every policeman worth his badge knew that these were only drunken hags who wanted nothing better than to have their drunken husbands beat them up." Is this character some sort of example of a "bad policeman?" Umm...no. All the characters are horrible. If they are not badmouthing women, they are using racial epithets...Maybe the author is saying that all Swedish police are terrible, but at least have a civilian character that is likable. This book is just impossible to read.

Between Summer's Longing and Winter's End είναι ο αγγλόφωνος τίτλος που αποδίδει καλύτερα τον αντίστοιχο σουηδικό. Πρόκειται για το πρώτο μέρος μιας αριστουργηματικής τριλογίας του Leif Persson που πραγματεύεται τη μετάβαση της πρότυπης σκανδιναβικής χώρας από την αθωότητα στην ενοχή.

Βρισκόμαστε στη Στοκχόλμη, το φθινόπωρο του 1985. Είναι το προοίμιο ενός ατέλειωτου χειμώνα που θα σαρώσει τη Σουηδία. Το Σοσιαλδημοκρατικό Κόμμα κυριαρχεί, η Σοβιετική υπερδύναμη μπαίνει για τα καλά στην περεστρόικα, υπάρχει ακόμα Ανατολικό και Δυτικό Βερολίνο, τα χιόνια του Ψυχρού Πολέμου έχουν αρχίσει να υποχωρούν, μόνο το λιώσιμό τους θα παρασύρει μια ολόκληρη χώρα τόσο κοντά στη Σοβιετική Ένωση, τόσο μακριά από τις ΗΠΑ. Ή μήπως δεν είναι έτσι;

“Παρασκευή 22 Νοεμβρίου: Στο χρονικό διάστημα που μεσολάβησε μεταξύ 19.56 και 20.01 έγιναν τρία τηλεφωνήματα στον αριθμό 90000του Κέντρου Άμεσης Δράσης της αστυνομίας της Στοκχόλμης”.

Ο Αμερικανός δημοσιογράφος Κράσνερ πέφτει από τον δέκατο πέμπτο όροφο μιας φοιτητικής Εστίας. Με το θάνατό του ανοίγει ο ασκός του Αιόλου.

Το σημείωμα του αυτόχειρα είναι περίεργο:

“Έζησα τη ζωή μου ανάμεσα στη νοσταλγία του καλοκαιριού και στο ψύχος του χειμώνα. Νεότερος συνήθιζα να σκέφτομαι ότι μόλις έρθει το καλοκαίρι θα ερωτευτώ κάποιον που θα μου αρέσει πολύ και τότε θα αρχίσω να ζω πραγματικά. Αλλά όταν έκανα όλα όσα ήμουν αναγκασμένος να κάνω προηγουμένως, το καλοκαίρι είχε περάσει και ότι απόμεινε ήταν το ψύχος του χειμώνα. Και αυτή, αυτή δεν ήταν η ζωή που είχα κατά νου”.

Ο αστυνομικός διευθυντής Γιούχανσον ετοιμάζεται να μεταπηδήσει στην υπηρεσία Διαχείρισης Προσωπικού, βγαίνοντας για λίγο από την ενεργό δράση στο πεδίο της αστυνομικής μάχης.

Ο Μπέκστρεμ είναι κοντός, παχύς και χοντροκομμένος, συνήθως μέθυσος αστυνομικός. Μαζί με τον Βίνμπλαντ της Σήμανσης βιάζονται να κλείσουν σε λίγες ώρες την υπόθεση.

Ο επιθεωρητής εγκληματολογικού Γιάρνεμπρινγκ είναι ο καλύτερος φίλος του Γιούχανσον και δουλεύει στις Έρευνες. Αναλαμβάνει να κλείσει την υπόθεση της “ελεύθερης πτώσης σαν σε όνειρο” του Αμερικανού. Κάτι όμως δεν ταιριάζει με την εύκολη ετυμηγορία της δολοφονίας. Ο νεκρός δημοσιογράφος έχει ένα μήνυμα που απευθύνεται στον Γιούχανσον, τον “έντιμο αστυνομικό της Σουηδίας”. Η υπόθεση είναι διαφορετική από ότι φαίνεται.

Ο Μπεργ είναι Διευθυντής του Γραφείο Επιχειρήσεων της Ασφάλειας. Προσπαθεί να ισορροπήσει εδώ και χρόνια ανάμεσα στις απαιτήσεις των πολιτικών του προϊσταμένων. Να διαβάσει τις επιθυμίες τους, να τους προσφέρει ότι ζητήσουν στο πιάτο ώστε να επιβιώσει στα ανώτατα κλιμάκια. Όταν οι συντηρητικοί παραδίδουν στους σοσιαλδημοκράτες, οι προκλήσεις είναι δυσκολότερες.

Ο Βαλτίν είναι υπαρχηγός του. Πανέξυπνος και διορατικός, αλλά και βαθιά διεστραμμένος, καταδύεται στις σαδιστικές του απολαύσεις. Βγάζει βρώμικες δουλειές, φυλάει όμως και τα προσωπικά του νώτα. Ο προϊστάμενός του μπορεί κάποια στιγμή να θελήσει να τον θυσιάσει.

Ο Ειδικός Σύμβουλος είναι ο άνθρωπος του Πρωθυπουργού. Μακράν ευφυής, καθοδηγεί τους επικεφαλής των υπηρεσιών Ασφαλείας. Συνομιλεί με τον “Καθηγητή” ένα θρύλο των μαθηματικών και των μυστικών υπηρεσιών του παρελθόντος. Παίζει σαν τη γάτα με το ποντίκι τον Μπεργ σπρώχνοντάς τον στη διερεύνηση των ναζιστικών σταγονιδίων εντός των αστυνομικών υπηρεσιών που θεωρούν τον Πρωθυπουργό προδότη.

Στη Σουηδία τα σταγονίδια δεν είναι ακριβώς σταγονίδια. Πρόκειται μάλλον για ισχυρούς κύκλους, αντάξιους του παρελθόντος μιας “ουδέτερης” χώρας κατά τη ναζιστική εποχή. Ο Πρωθυπουργός είναι ο νούμερο ένα “δολοφονήσιμος” στόχος.

Το κύκλωμα της διαφθοράς στις κρατικές υπηρεσίες είναι εκτεταμένο. Η Ασφάλεια θα βάλει κάθε δυνατό εμπόδιο στο δρόμο του Γιούχανσον που με μοναδική μαεστρία και διαίσθηση ξετυλίγει το κουβάρι της “αυτοκτονίας”. Ένα ταξίδι του στην Βιρτζίνια των ΗΠΑ τον φέρνει σε επαφή με την πρώην φίλη του Κράσνερ. Αποδεικνύεται ότι ο επίδοξος δημοσιογράφος ήταν ανιψιός ενός στελέχους της CIA, που του άφησε αρκετά στοιχεία ώστε να γράψει βιβλίο για τη δράση των αμερικανικών μυστικών υπηρεσιών στη Στοκχόλμη και ειδικά, για τη στρατολόγηση κάποτε, ενός νεαρού στελέχους, ενός Σουηδού που έμελλε να σταδιοδρομήσει για λίγα χρόνια ως πράκτορας της CIA με το κωδικό όνομα “Προσκυνητής”. Σήμερα ο Προσκυνητής είναι ο πρωθυπουργός της Σουηδίας. Το κείμενο του αυτόχειρα υπήρξε στην πραγματικότητα η επιστολή παραίτησής του “κατάσκοπου που τράβηξε ανατολικά”, από τη μέχρι τότε δράση του.

Αυτό τουλάχιστον θα ανακαλύψει ο Γιούχανσον, υπερβαίνοντας ένα φαύλο σύστημα. Την ίδια ώρα η δυσαρέσκεια κατά του πρωθυπουργού οδηγεί σε σκέψεις και σχέδια που απειλούν τη ζωή του. Όλοι οι εμπλεκόμενοι είναι δυνητικοί συνωμότες. Ο Πρωθυπουργός παρουσιάζεται σαν κατάσκοπος των Σοβιετικών από την ακροδεξιά, αλλά η “αυτοκτονία” του Αμερικανού οδηγεί στο αντίθετο συμπέρασμα: Υπήρξε κατάσκοπος των Αμερικάνων. Ή μήπως δεν είναι έτσι; Κι αν συνέβαιναν και τα δύο;

Το σύμπαν διαφθοράς, βίας, χειραγώγησης, κυνισμού, εξαγοράς, κινεί τα πιόνια του. Η κόλαση αποκαλύπτεται πίσω από τον Σουηδικό παράδεισο, εκεί που ελάχιστα πράγματα είναι όπως φαίνονται.

Το πολιτικό και γεωστρατηγικό σχόλιο για το σκανδιναβικό πρόβλημα στην ευαίσθητη μεταπολεμική περίοδο είναι ισχυρό:

“Όσον αφορούσε τη Σουηδία, τα χρόνια μετά τη λήξη του Δευτέρου Παγκοσμίου Πολέμου, και πάντα από την άποψη της πολιτικής ασφαλείας, μπορούσαν κάλλιστα να συγκριθούν με ένα μακρύ περίπατο σε πάγο που σχηματίστηκε μέσα σε μια νύχτα. Σε τι κινήσεις θα προέβαινε ο μεγάλος γείτονας στα ανατολικά; Στη βάση όλων αυτών υπήρχε μια ιστορία τετρακοσίων χρόνων συνεχών πολέμων και συγκρούσεων με το Ρώσο αντίπαλο. Μια χώρα που τότε κυβερνιόταν από τον Ιωσήφ Στάλιν και η οποία από γεωγραφικής και πολιτικής απόψεως δε βρισκόταν ποτέ άλλοτε τόσο κοντά στη σουηδική επικράτεια. Οι Ρώσοι υπήρχαν στη Φινλανδία, στη Βαλτική, στην Πολωνία, στη Γερμανία, ακόμα και στα δανικά νησιά της Βαλτικής. Όπου κι αν στρεφόσουν έβλεπες μόνο τη ρωσική αρκούδα με τα τεράστια άκρα της, έτοιμη να δώσει το τελειωτικό αγκάλιασμα.
Πού να πήγαινε κανείς; Κι αν ετίθετο θέμα φυγής, μόνο σε μια ταλαιπωρημένη Νορβηγία μπορούσες να στραφείς, αλλά αν σκεφτόσουν πώς ήταν φτιαγμένη η σκανδιναβική χερσόνησος, το μόνο πλεονέκτημα ήταν ότι δεν θα χρειαζόταν να τρέξεις πολύ. Το να πας να πέσεις στην αγκαλιά της Δύσης, πάλι, δεν ήταν λύση ...Οι Ρώσοι δεν θα επέτρεπαν ποτέ κάτι τέτοιο και δεν χρειάζονταν καν να κηρύξουν τον πόλεμο σε κάποιον για να του δώσουν να καταλάβει γιατί δεν γίνονταν τέτοια πράγματα ...Οπότε απέμενε μόνο το πολιτικό διπλό παιχνίδι: κουνάς φιλικά το χέρι στους Ρώσους κρατώντας όρθια και την ταμπέλα περί “αυστηρής σουηδικής ουδετερότητας” - μέχρι να σου μουδιάσουν και τα δύο χέρια αν ήταν απαραίτητο – και ταυτόχρονα παίζεις κάτω από το παιχνίδι με τους Αμερικανούς στρατιωτικούς. Παίρνεις όλη τη βοήθεια που χρειάζεσαι χωρίς να σε ανακαλύπτουν... Στον κόσμο αυτής της ορθολογικής πολιτικής δεν υπήρχε χώρος για συναισθήματα και μόλις οι πιέσεις από την Ανατολή άρχισαν να γίνονται λιγότερες, ήρθε και η ώρα να χαλαρώσουν οι δεσμοί με τη Δύση”.

Ο Πέρσον αποδομεί με κατεδαφιστικό τρόπο όλους τους μύθους: Τη μεταπολεμική σουηδική ουδετερότητα, το σοσιαλδημοκρατικό κράτος δικαίου, τη σκανδιναβική διαφάνεια του κρατικού μηχανισμού, τους νοσταλγούς των ναζί που κρύβονται κάτω από το κέλυφος της σύγχρονης ευρωπαϊκής δημοκρατίας.

Ο Πρωθυπουργός θα δολοφονηθεί λίγους μήνες αργότερα. Ο Πέρσον δίνει τη δική του εκδοχή. Η κρατική Ασφάλεια θα παίξει κεντρικό ρόλο. Οι έρευνες που θα ακολουθήσουν δεν θα δείξουν κανέναν πειστικό ένοχο, καθώς θα βολοδέρνουν ανάμεσα στην ακροδεξιά και σε Κούρδους πρόσφυγες.

Έτσι κορυφώνεται ο Σουηδικός χειμώνας της ύστερης μεταπολεμικής περιόδου. Με την επίφαση μιας χώρας πολιτισμένης και ευνομούμενης, που όμως είκοσι χρόνια μετακομμουνιστικού κόσμου δεν αρκούν για να αφαιρέσουν τις σκιές από το δημόσιο βίο της.

Ο Πέρσον δεν γράφει απλά μια θεωρία συνωμοσίας.

Γράφει ένα μεγάλο μυθιστόρημα για την πολιτική και το έγκλημα. Στα χνάρια των αριστοτεχνικών ιστών αράχνης του Λε Καρέ. Στα χνάρια και της αμερικανικής τριλογίας θανάτου του Ελρόυ. Εξαιρετική γραφή, μοναδική πλοκή, όμορφοι χαρακτήρες. Να το διαβάσετε; Οπωσδήποτε!

A bit disappointing... Too many details on police procedure, while I expected it would be more relevant on Olof Palme's life and death. I was also surprised to find out that Palme wasn't so popular at the time of his death in his home country. Here, in Greece he is considered a noted socialist leader and a pacifist. Anyhow, the novel is well researched but lacks that little something that could make it a great read.

Marvellous, intelligent thriller.

I think this book is loosely based on the assasination of Swedish PM, Olaf Palme, in the 1980s.

Scandanavian writers operate in different ways to English speaking writers.

They often like to digress and ramble on about the state of the world and once one becomes used to that style there is a sense of the reader being better informed of the world at large.

Στην αρχή με ζάλισαν τα πολλά ονόματα, οι πολλοί χαρακτήρες, οι πολλές εναλλαγές αφηγητών, οι πολλές αχρείαστες λεπτομέρειες και πολλά άλλα... Να μην μιλήσω για τα κρυστάλλινα ποτήρια της θείας Τζένης του Γιούχανσον (που τα αναφέρει 12 φορές!).
Θα μπορούσε να ήταν πολύ καλύτερο, αν το κρατούσε λίγο πιο απλό και το είχε γράψει λίγο πιο μεθοδικά.
Το βασικό θέμα (σύμφωνα με την περίληψη και με την κατάληξη) είναι η δολοφονία του Πάλμε, αλλά μας βγάζει τα σωθικά μέχρι να φτάσουμε εκεί, χωρίς να δημιουργεί αγωνία στον αναγνώστη. Και επίσης, αφού το περιμένουν τόσο καιρό, στο τέλος γίνεται πολύ εύκολα.
Αυτό που μου άρεσε περισσότερο ήταν το ότι περιγράφει όλες τις κατηγορίες αστυνομικών (από το χαμηλότερο ως το υψηλότερο επίπεδο ιεραρχίας), όλους τους χαρακτήρες τους (από τον πιο σωστό και δίκαιο μέχρι τον πιο σάπιο και διεφθαρμένο), αλλά και το πόσο μπορεί να επηρεάσει αυτό την πορεία και εξέλιξη της έρευνας.
Επίσης, θίγει ιδιαίτερα τα θέματα της ενδοοικογενειακής βίας και του μισογυνισμού, κάτι που ίσως δεν το περιμένουμε για τη σουηδική κοινωνία. Βέβαια, η πλοκή εκτυλίσσεται και σχεδόν 30 χρόνια πριν.

I would probably give this 2 1/2 starts if I could, but I really struggled with this one. Just as I was starting to get my bearings among the large number of characters introduced early on, the author launched into a second, parallel story line with a whole new group of characters. And while I found the original police procedural story line enjoyable, I thought the second, which involved the Swedish Secret Police, a bit of a slog -- too many cryptic conversations and political maneuverings.

The story is apparently loosely based on conspiracy theories surrounding the still unsolved 1986 assassination of the Swedish Prime Minister Olof Palme, and involves the apparent suicide of an American journalist who is writing a book which will expose the Prime Minister as first a CIA and later a Russian spy.

I'm only about 20 pages into this but it is unnervingly like discovering a long-lost 11th Martin Beck novel. It's written in exactly the same wry style as Sjowall and Wahloo's classics. And the 10 Martin Beck novels are known, collectively, as The Story of Crime. This one's subtitle is The Story of a Crime, so obviously Persson was heavily influenced by the masters.

I believe this is the first installment of a trilogy that was originally published in Sweden in 2004. Another example of publishers trying to cash in on Stieg Larsson Mania.

Znakomita powieść, nasuwająca nieodparte skojarzenie, że oto obcuje się z czymś, co mogłoby powstać z połączenia twórczość dość odległych od siebie pisarzy, jakimi są James Ellroy i Stieg Larsson. Zagadka tajemniczej śmierci pewnego dziennikarza jest tylko pretekstem do ukazania kulis politycznych salonów, oraz "gier" między wywiadem, służbami bezpieczeństwa i policją. Autor dość szybko odkrywa karty, natomiast największym smaczkiem jest to, że poszczególni bohaterowie nie wiedzą tego, co wie czytelnik. W związku z tym ich działania, poparte błędnymi często domysłami, odbijają się poważnymi skutkami w finale.

Świetny, oszczędny język, skoncentrowanie się na policjantach i agentach służb bezpieczeństwa, duże zróżnicowanie charakterów (solidni idealiści, moczymordy, perwersyjni zboczeńcy, szpiedzy i cwaniaczki - wszyscy w jednym worku "władzy wykonawczej"), wiarygodne zachowanie i bardzo prawdopodobna historia, z dużą, acz świetnie podaną dozą publicystyki i szczyptą satyry - tyle smakowitości dostałem ostatnio, oglądając "The Wire". I w pewnych aspektach powieść dość zbliżona do tego, co można zobaczyć w tymże serialu.

Zdziwiony bardzo niskimi ocenami, bardzo gorąco polecam! Najlepsza z dotychczas przeze mnie czytanych książek, z tak zwanej, "czarnej serii".

This book was a hideous beast. I had heard good things about it from various websites, and as the tagline mentions 'Swedish classic' and I love Scandinavian novels, I was excited to finally find a copy in my local bookstore.

Where do I begin? The punctuation and grammar were off throughout about two-thirds of the novel, the names were confusingly similar, there were two different streams of story that only intertwined in the climax (based on a historical event) at about seven-eighths through...

And perhaps unforgivably, for a feminist such as me, EVERY SINGLE FEMALE was portrayed as either some sort of waif-like dreamer who's waiting for Prince Charming, or a total slut who will jump into bed with anyone.

There is only one redeeming feature, and that is Lars Martin Johansson, a dogged cop who doesn't treat women like objects, works hard, loves his kids, and is honest to a fault.

I can't recommend this book to anyone. It's time reading that I will never get back, and I can't believe the second is a best-seller too.

What an unholy mess of bad writing. I don't know how much to blame the translator and how much the source material but I'd guess mostly the latter. This is a confused mess of a book with deeply unlikeable, misogynistic, racist, homophobic characters. That seems to describe 95% of the male characters anyway. The female characters are simply one dimensional sex objects more or less. Makes Sweden seem just about the nastiest place on earth.

I kept at it because I was interested in the subject matter, the genre and because it started better than it ended. But if you pick this book up thinking it will get better and all will be revealed, you're fooling yourself.
