I own quite a few of Klanten's books, and this is the first time I've really thought, "I wish this came as an ebook."
The works included are marvelous. Great range, very creative, highly interesting. The text is also good in that it informs the works, however visually I did think that on a lot of the pages the text took supremacy over the images. This was one of my two problems. So many of the images are tiny, and I wished I could have clicked on them to embiggen. They weren't hugely useful or enjoyable at thumbnail size.
Having an ebook would also solve my second problem: how do I read this? Too big to read in bed, far too big to read on a commute, too big to hold comfortably in an armchair - it really has to be read at a table or desk.
As I mentioned, I have quite a few books like this, and this was also the first time I've been consciously aware of being highly frustrated by the physical limitations of the book. I've only looked through it once. I would have liked to have spent longer with the artists but I am tired of holding this massive thing up. My wrists hurt. (Sounds like a porn line).
I'd like it, and all following books from Klanten's team, as an interactive pdf, with full screen images of each work, and a link to click if I want to read the text, so that it supports, rather than competes with, the visuals.
What a great book. The range and depth of the work selected is exciting and engaging. I wished for more context and commentary on a lot of the work, and used it as a jumping off point to learn about some great artists I hadn't known previously.
