AWESOME BOOK.

A solid western. Takes place in 1907 in what's now Santa Monica. A gunfighter with a reputation in Texas heads west, intent on hanging up his guns, and gets work at the ranch of a distant cousin. But there's conflict between the ranch and nearby homesteaders, and a party on the ranch has less-than-noble aims for it, all coming to a head. The main characters are fairly well developed, though the main villain and some of the side characters aren't. Wormser's prose is sparse and fast-moving, perfect for the genre, and he tells a good story. One star off because despite being a western, there isn't actually that much action in it. The author keeps the story moving along fast with tense character interactions and shifting loyalties/perspectives. A good read.
