THE FALL OF X BEGINS HERE! The Hellfire Gala is always the biggest event of the season…but this year's will change everything for Krakoa. What is meant to be mutantkind's biggest night becomes their biggest nightmare as the Fall of X begins! All your favorite X-Men are going to be left reeling after this one - shocking revelations, stunning betrayals, horrifying tragedy, impossible deaths…and of course the most glamorous looks of the year, all in one CANNOT-MISS package!
Just as jumbled as one has come to expect from the X-Men, there's a story here, but it's bogged down by unnecessary cameos and writing that no longer feels clever or reflective.
What is supposed to be a memorable episode - and it is, in idea - is unfortunately marred by Gerry Duggan's poor literary skills. It's confusing and badly written within a general plot that's already quite convoluted to begin with amidst way too many series. I'm spending my time on Wikipedia, Marvel Fandom et al. to connect the dots, and frankly I'm getting tired of it.
Add to that the visual overload of a dozens artists designing improbable costumes (who's who?) in saturated colours and the cup is full.
5 This was really good. A really well done culmination of years of story telling that sets up a whole new, interesting direction with interesting character development as well. Beautiful art, too.
The constant change in artists, while intriguing, was also jarring in places. Some worked better than others.
The plot twists did surprise me - possibly more than they should have, mainly because I was behind and hadn't read some of the comics leading up to it. Sins of Sinister was a series I couldn't get into to save my life. I tried. Multiple times. But Sinister is a whiny, silly villian - kind of like Pennyworth meets Lucifer on speed. He gives me a headache, and less is most definitely more. I blame Hickman for his prominence. Moira X is more interesting actually - although it's no longer clear what is motivating her? Outside of an insane desire to live forever and hatred for mutants. That's the difficulty with the book - while the villains are frightening and despicable, they aren't fun. And kind of one dimensional and repetitive. We need more layers somehow. There is some potential in Seraphi, the AI. Also the Children of the Vault, and Stellar Orbis. Stasis, eh...maybe?
The main characters were handled well, and the deaths were suitably shocking. Particularly now that the way of resurrecting everyone has been neatly discontinued by ORCHIS. The plot was easy enough to follow for someone who hadn't been following closely for quite a while. And the major moments had good art. I rather liked the sequences with Jean Grey, and with Emma, who are admittedly two of my favs, along with Katheryn Pryde, and Destiny. I'm on the fence about Cyclops (who they dealt with in the free comic that came out prior), and Bobby.
It is a game-changer comic - and it neatly takes all of the characters in a new direction. Splits them up and throws them with new characters along the way.
Ms. Marvel who is a personal favorite of mine - I felt was dealt with well enough...and since she felt more mutant than inhuman to me from the get-go, it works. Also, her dual status may be a way of pulling the Inhumans into the mix - and getting them to fight on the side of the Mutants. It certainly helps to pull in the Avengers, who are pretty much already on-board. That said, I'd caution the writers not to overuse her and put her in every comic book like they've done with Wolverine and Spiderman. Less is more. They burned me out on both Spiderman and Wolverine about fifteen years ago. That's the difficulty with superhero comics - a tendency to go overboard with certain character tropes.
But those minor quibbles aside? It was a good read. A tad on the violent, ahem gory side, with multiple character deaths, but an enjoyable read all the same. I admittedly laughed at some of it, or thought, OMG, they killed (fill in the blank) again! Comic book writers have this in common with sci-fantasy and daytime soap writers, they love to kill off characters only to bring them back repeatedly. Unfortunately this go around they killed off various characters that fans wanted more of and had voted to be on the X-men team. So not sure how well that will go - going forward.
This is one-shot comic book title “Hellfire Gala” which is the beginning of a major comic book event about the X-Men universe called “Fall of X”.

LET’S PARTY!
First of all, I can’t remember a single comic with such large group of creative team, in a TPB couldn’t be such unusual but in one single comic book (even one which is a bit longer than your regular comic book issue(78 pages)) is quite…
…astonishing!
Second of all, it’s quite difficult to explain why this comic is so good and so relevant without falling in spoilers, but don’t worry since I won’t tell you any spoiler…
…just trust me that if you’re fan of The X-Men, you need to read this comic book and hopefully without any spoiler that it could ruin you the large bunch of surprises.
The X-Men universe won’t be the same after this single comic book.
The Hellfire Gala is an elegant party set in Krakoa (an island which is the new mutant nation having cutting-edge technology in teleporting, medicine, etc…) where all the VIP guests (X-Men, Avengers, important mutants and non-mutants) assist to vote and to elect the new roster of The X-Men. There has been other Hellfire Galas before and I don’t know how interesting were the previous ones…
…but you won’t want to miss this one!!!
One topic is that Ms. Marvel (Kamala Khan) is revealed as mutant, and since she was already an inhuman, it’s quite unusual to be both (not to mention that she died and due being mutant now, she is able to be ressurrected thanks to the uncanny new mutant technology). Cyclops and Emma Frost are quite interested that Kamala being widely recognized as mutant, while Kamala herself is still dealing with the news (being a mutant and being recently deceased).
This Hellfire Gala is where “The Fall of X” begins and I can’t tell you how, but indeed you can trust me that the X-Men universe won’t be the same and this incoming comic book event will be quite relevant to read.
If you’re gonna read this one, brace yourselves, it will be a bumpy ride. This isn't for the faint of heart.
A now annual event, the Hellfire Gala has become the cornerstone of the X-Men year when a new team is elected, because apparently 12 issues of any team is enough these days. It would work if the characterisation was there but sadly this is Duggan so don’t get too excited. The Gala is also notable for mixing things up in some way - as all the villains have been neutered by joining Krakoa, previous X-allies such as Moira and Karima have to fill these roles. In this issue, we hopefully see the beginning of the end of the Krakoa storyline and Duggan’s run too, and that’s pretty much the best reason to read this issue and also to admire the fantastic costume designs for the characters. Otherwise, it’s the usual confusing muddle by someone who doesn’t really understand how to write for his constantly rotating cast.
. 3/5 It was a decent start for the much feared yet expected Fall of X. I really don't have much to say about this aside from one thing: I believe it's safe to say that " Magneto was right." AGAIN! Remember what he said to storm with his dying breathe? "our enemies will strike, and Charles will feel forced by events to act," and on that day Xavier will "martyr us all." So yeah... Professor X plays perfectly into the hands of Orchis. Magneto has always counterbalanced Xavier, but without him, specially now with Moira X goin all psycho on them, there is no one left to protect Xavier from himself. Magneto was right about Xavier, and with his dying breath he described — with uncanny accuracy — exactly how Xavier would fail Krakoa, the X-Men, and all of mutantkind. 'm not by all means ready for how this'll play out.

Quite an achievement and pretty shocking. I do wish that the intro with Ms Marvel had been longer. I would have like for them to have given her more of a tour of the island (and maybe even Arako). It would have been nice to remind readers (especially new readers or those who only dip in and out of X-men) what Krakoa really is before turning everything upside down.
Havent really been reading any x-men books so some stuff i didn’t understand but only a small amount. Ms marvel is back which is no surprise. I dont really mind her being an inhuman as well as a mutant. Lots of shocking deaths which was intense but interesting.

I don’t know how I feel about how they’re ending the whole krakoa series right now. It’s been so entertaining to see the whole x-men finally having a place to live in peace and harmony. And a way to make a living and a difference in the human race. Just to be taken down by one of their own.

They’re all DEAD? What????!!!! I can only imagine the emptiness and horror Charles feels, and the writing and art did SO much to sell those feelings. Incredibly emotional ride of an issue. The Fall of X begins.

I am definitely not the audience for this. I'm just here for Kamala Khan - whose manner of resurrection was so unworthy of her, almost as unworthy as her manner of death. The story itself was... hmm. Not well written. So much exposition!
Everyone looked so pretty I just cannot believe I watched a lgbtq+ massacre and Wilson Fisk walked away unharmed :(. The gala never ends without someone dying. Cancel it next year Charles 😭
Basically 80 pages of the X-Men getting fucked (and not in a good way). It was some pretty good stuff. My problem with it was the voice Duggan put the exposition in and everyone was in these over the top Hellfire Gala costumes and I couldn't tell who half the people in the book were. I needed a roadmap at times and I've read the X-Men religiously since the 80's. I feel like I'm going to need to read this at least once more to register it all but I may wait until the first issue of all these new miniseries come out. It's a lot to take in.
This did indeed read much better the second go around.
