Rate this book
They've got faces so ugly only a mother could love them!

The New York Times started a phenomenon: ugly is the new black. After publishing an articled entitled, "A Masterpiece of Nature? Yuck!", that chronicled several of the world's ugliest animals (Sphynx cat, star-nosed mole, proboscis monkey, etc.) they were bombarded by loyal readers who sent in their own pictures of ugly animals. Each one trying to out ugly the last.

With 101 Animals Secrets and 101 Freaky Animals, the Bergers have already brought to light some of the ugliest animals on the planet. Now they have concentrated their efforts to compile the definitive list of the ugliest animals ever!

In 1957, Melvin Berger married Gilda Shulman (now Gilda Berger), also a noted author of children's nonfiction. The two have collaborated on many books, including the ongoing Scholastic Question-and-Answer series. Writing has enabled Berger to answer many of their own questions, as well; they enjoy research and finds that working on one book almost inevitably raises enough issues to lead to another. The Bergers have two daughters and live near the beach in East Hampton, New York.

I just love reading about the non-traditional critters. This book even has some creatures that I have never heard about before.

My 5th graders loved reading this! They were so excited during discussion, asked higher level questions and conversed with each other during group! It was a teacher's dream come true!
