I enjoyed this book very much. The writing is very good, very smooth and easy to understand. The characters were all well developed and very humorous at times especially when they bantered between each other. The paranormal world in the other planes was very interesting as well - Vampires, Gouls, Harpies, and Good-looking Warriors oh my!
The reason I state this is perfect for teens is due to their high school age, the BFF relationships, The groups of geeks verses the jocks and all the mischief Kizzy and her friends get themselves into. The texting between friends, experiencing first time French kissing (no sex in book), the experience of loss of life, and just dealing with life in general made this the perfect book for teens to identify with.
Entanglements starts with introducing us to Kizzy Taylor on what is probably one of the worst nights of her life. Her own father, the man who was supposed to love her and care for her, holds her at gunpoint, ordering her to jump off a bridge. She tried to save herself and her baby brother by running from her, but unfortunately he did fire and killed her kid brother in the process. Now, several months later, Kizzy is still suffering from survivor’s guilt, and struggling to keep on going with her life. She’s no longer the person she was once before, and her old friends don’t seem that appealing to her anymore either.
At school, Kizzy runs into a new guy, named Rom. He’s very strange, but also extremely attractive. Rom acts and talks like he walked straight out of the Roman Empire. Although Kizzy thinks he’s cute from the moment she meets him, she’s a bit wary as to why he talks and acts so strange. When he joins her and her old group of friends to go investigating abandoned houses in the middle of the night – their current target an asylum that has been closed for several decades – things start getting really weird. For starters, something sucks Kizzy’s arm straight into a wall. And then a vortex appears in the middle of a room, sucking her stepsister right in, transporting her to another dimension. It’s up to Kizzy to save her stepsister. That is, if she doesn’t get killed by the nightmarish creatures who escaped from the other dimension first.
I liked Entanglements. The heroine is especially interesting because she holds the middle between being stereotypical and being too weird for her own good. The fact that she’s still struggling from survivor’s guilt adds to her personality. As a reader, you feel instantly sorry for her and what happened to her. If the person who’s supposed to love you most tries to kill you, that’s simply terrible. Kizzy’s friends are intriguing characters as well. We have the stereotypical nerds and cheerleaders squads, but beneath those stereotypes we can find actual people with actual personalities.
Don’t get me started on Rom though. Rom is the whole reason why this book went from a 4 star rating to a 3,5. I just didn’t like Rom; I thought he was the weakest part of the entire story. For starters, he talks like he’s the reincarnation of Julius Cesar, and I’m not a big fan of that. If a guy came to me and began talking like he lived several centuries ago, that would rank highly on my list of turn-offs. The fact that Kizzy hardly seems to bother, even when she doesn’t yet realize who he really is, annoys me. It’s like saying: hey, although this guy is totally insane, he looks hot, so I’ll date him. I’m not a big fan of such behavior or thinking. The good part is though that the romance plot is a subplot, and it doesn’t take too much attention away from the main plot and action. Considering that I didn’t like the potential love interest from the start, I was glad that it only played a minor part in this story.
The storyline itself is interesting, to say the least. P.R. Mason talks about vortexes and travelling between several dimensions/universes. I thought the explanation for vortexes, although a tad bit scientific, was intriguing and original. The moment they were introduced in the story, I wanted to read more about them: what exactly are they and how do they work, etc.
I must also add that the writing pace was fast, and that the book sucked me in from the very beginning. That said, there were some things that could use a bit of work – the love interest, for example, and the relationship between Kizzy and Rom – and I also wished some of the side characters were better developed. Entanglements is really entertaining though, and I would recommend it to all people who enjoy young adult paranormal romance novels.
Rating: Has making out and swearing, but no graphic violence.
Synopsis: Kizzy Taylor returns to school after leaving for about a month due to reasons of her dad attempting to kill her and succeeding in killing her brother, Adam. She has holes in her memory and the memories she sort of remembers don't make sense. She ends up meeting a hot guy named Rom who talks like he's from an old movie and has a weird accent (sorta Italian, sorta not) who both weirds her out and makes her want to jump his bones. That might just be the fact that he's hot though. Going spelunking with her friends in an old hospital she accidentally opens a portal to another dimension, losing her friend and her stepsister. She's going to have to deal with ghouls, vampires (not the cute sparkly kind), and a boyfriend who doesn't say everything he knows to get them back.
My review: Okay, you probably guessed that I liked this book already and you're right. Like the other book, this one was funny (The Baronet of Douche? Hilarious!), obviously knew what it was talking about, and had scenes that would make you blush as you read. Kizzy wasn't flawless, far from it, and didn't come off as annoyingly stupid. When reading it I didn't go 'If I was her I would blankety blank, why'd ya do that?' Though not my new favorite book (I've still got my copy of Good Omens) it definitely made the list. I also blame this author for writing stoic and bad-boy characters well enough that I don't hate the tropes anymore. They are actual characters first, things girls like in a guy second. I used to like to pretend to have conversations with character types (don't ask, I was a weird lemon who had to much free time and didn't yet have a computer of my own). Mostly it would be like, 'oh, hello granola child, do you want soy milk or green tea?’ Somehow the stoic guys and bad-boys would end up slapped. In Entanglements and The Banshee and The Linebacker, the love interests crack jokes, smile, express weaknesses that make sense. And I think that might be why these books are as good as chocolate. When you're reading a book that revolves around a romance, you want a writer who can write for both genders.
Kizzy Taylor is suffering from a bad case of survivor's guilt. Three months ago, her father held her at gun point and ordered her to jump off a bridge. Not believing he'd really shoot, she scooped up her brother and made a run for safety. Unfortunately, she underestimated her dad's determination and it cost her baby brother is life. Now, three months later, she's back at school but is self-destructive. Fortunately, her friends refuse to give her up and have lured her back into their circle with a Urban exploration expedition to an abandoned hospital. Along with her usual crew, is hottie foreign exchange student Rom who is bent on protecting Kizzy. Then things get really weird. Swirling portals open up around Kizzy and try to suck her into an alternative universe where the stuff of nightmares reign. Worse, her step-sister gets pulled into one and out pops a ghoul that goes on a killing rampage. In order to get her sister back, Kizzy must do the impossible without fulfilling a prophecy that could doom our world and others in the multiverse. Entanglements is a brilliantly written story that involves not just portals onto worlds with alternate history, but touches on time travel via worm holes. PR Mason has lovingly created an amazing heroine in Kizzy. Also mired in her own guilt, she's a good person who's smart and sassy and isn't about to let events happen around her but is proactively looking for solutions, no matter how bizarre. The eclectic supporting cast bring out the best and the worst in her and add extra dimensions to the story. If you're looking for a SciFi story that is well-written and a blast to read, look no farther than Entanglements. Best of all, it's a young adult book so be sure to share.
Kizzy Elizabeth Taylor has the uncanny power to open doorways into other dimensions. A Clavis. That's cool, but not when her friends and stepsister get entangled in the process. When other undesirable creatures come out of the vortex, bedlam ensues. Kizzy is burdened to save the people she loves and try to fix the destruction she unwittingly caused. It's becoming clearer to her why her father tried to kill her, as she finds out that her tainted blood inherited from her grandmother will cause devastation. Her strongest hope is Rom, who comes from the dimension of Augustinia. He is a warrior with a mission... a mission that is exactly different from what Kizzy wants. Will Kizzy be able to save her family and friends, or will she actually cause the destruction of multiple worlds? More importantly, will Rom be strong enough to resist his attraction to Kizzy in the name of duty? Well. It's hard to get into Rom's speech pattern. Minus one star because it did not do anything to enhance my reading pleasure, even if the excuse is the guy's from another dimension. Less another star, because I don't buy the romance between this fifteen year old Kizzy, and Rom who I think should really be old being a warrior and all-- and to be trusted with a mission so important. I'm not a big fan of time travel stories because it's generally confusing. There's a lot of unanswered issues in them, and most of the time the author explains the questions away with "no one really knows". Anyway, this one wasn't so bad. What I enjoyed most are Kizzy's circle of friends. Life's worries do lighten when you know good friends have your back.
Entanglements by P.R. Mason Kizzy Taylor is a fifteen year old with a special gift, the ability to open a vortex. Messing with other dimensions gets dicey real quick. Whenever someone falls through the vortex….someone or something comes through it. And those who pass along the way become entangled with each other. Join Kizzy on this adventure with the hunky Rom Calixo and all her friends, including a few bullies who tag along as well. Kizzy ends up on an adventures traveling through wormholes and vortexes to save her friends or trying to fix the present by visiting the past. It all starts with a simple spelunking trip through areas left best alone, has our characters fighting to rescue friends and chase down monsters. Going through time and space causing disturbances in the natural way of the world.
Many of these characters in this book show up again the authors Dark Realm Series. Prince Leopold, the vampire monarch, Amy who is a soldier in the Resistance, and many others. The story keeps the reader on the run along with the characters and it gets dark at times but also humorous. And yet in all the darkness, the seed of romance it planted and even blooms. This is separate than the next series but it lets you see both worlds and understand more what Dorcha is like. A great fast moving enjoyable adventure. **Mild language http://justjudysjumbles.blogspot.com/...
I like it when I'm able to step outside of my reading comfort zone and read something I wouldn't normally even consider. That's what happened when I read "Entanglements" by P.R. Mason.
"Entanglements" is a young-adult paranormal/fantasy book that forced me to try to believe things that I can barely grasp. It follows teenager Kizzy Taylor as she discovers alternate dimensions and has to save her stepsister after she accidentally opens a vortex and her stepsister is sucked away.
Not being familiar with the idea of vortexes (vorteces?) or alternate dimensions, "Entanglements" was a good way for me to venture into the genre. P.R. Mason does a great job of explaining the ideas succinctly yet clearly so that even a noob like me could understand what was going on. In actuality, it made me a little curious about these types of theories. I can't wait to read what she writes as a follow-up!
There was also a bit of romance involved in the story, but it was just under-the-surface enough that it didn't get in the way of the storyline or seem cheesy. It simply added a bit of realism to the characters, even if one of them was not of our dimension.
"Entanglements" is a great book for teenagers and for those of us not familiar with the paranormal/fantasy genre.
Kizzy Taylor has had a rough start. Her father tried to kill her but instead killed her brother. It is now months later and her friends are trying to help her get on with her life minus that destructive streak. They join an Urban exploring group and decide to explore an abandoned hospital. Then things get really weird. A vortex opens up and Kizzy’s step-sister gets sucked in. What is worse is a nasty little goblin gets kicked out and goes on a rampage.
Kizzy is a portal key. She has the ability to open portals to the different realms in the universe. With the help of her friends and strange Rom, she has to go save her step-sister and keep a prophecy about all the worlds collapsing from happening.
This is a great story. The characters are so believable. I felt so bad for Kizzy. I understood where her bad attitude came from but I was cheering for her and all she does to save the day. Rom is interesting and I really liked the romance aspect that was not over done.
I have to say that this is one story, although geared toward young adults, anyone will like. I will definitely be reading more from PR Mason.
I received this book for free in exchange for an honest review.
It's rare that I don't finish a book I've started. Even the really awful ones. This book is just too painful. The speech of the male character is ridiculous. It felt like he was speaking some rudimentary language cross between Yoda and Thor. (Shall I call it 'Yodor' or 'Thora'?) For example: To explain that he isn't hurt he says: "pride only has suffered"......"naught else". I didn't even bother to find out what the Vulcan reference was a few pages later. It all felt exceedingly forced. Also, in regards to the main character there is absolutely ZERO authenticity. Someone from Savannah, GA, would never say "sat on my bum." Not at all. Which really irks me. Even if the language pattern of one character was a bit strange, shouldn't there be consistency and authenticity in at least the main character? There is no authenticity there! Oh, and who actually says "WTF" aloud? I mean what the acronym stands for, yes....But just "WTF" ? I value my time and energy too much to actually continue this one.
When I picked up P.R. Mason's ENTANGLEMENTS I wasn't sure what to expect. I don't normally read YA novels, but I found ENTANGLEMENTS to be a delight.
Kizzy, the heroine is in some ways a typical teenager, but she has a tragic past, her father tried to kill her and did kill her four-year-old brother. And her future isn't certain either. Turns out she has an unusual talent - she can open portals to alternate dimensions. Now her fate along with that of her family, friends and three separate dimensions rest on her slender shoulders.
P.R. Mason manages to mix alternative history and dimensions with time travel and teenaged angst in a highly entertaining way. The prose is lean and action-filled. The teenagers believable. Though there is some violence, drama and tragedy, the humor balances it. There's also a sweet romance between Kizzy and Rom, a handsome lad from another dimension who's been sent to stop her from opening any more portals - even if he has to kill her to do so.
Ahh. This book. I couldn't stand it. The beginning chapter/section was flawless. This was when the main character's father points a gun at her. Her brother dies instead of her. I felt no remorse what so ever. I felt it was just there for dramatic effect. It didn't at all change me. And please don't get me started on the character "love interest". THE DIALECT. OMG. No one speaks like that. I know it was supposed to be something new and different, but it made me cringe every time he said something. The only person I like was the main character. She was spunky, independent, and different. I wish she had brought things to the story, but sadly this book will always be too flat for me. I wish I could of liked this book, but sadly I didn't. Thanks for sending me this book though, I really appreciated it.
Ms. Mason blends the paranormal—think vampires, ghouls and more—with some fascinating sci-fi components—vortexes, wild scientific theories and alternate dimensions—into a world I was sucked into. (*cringe* Please forgive the pun.) I’ve never read a storyline quite like this, and I enjoyed how she pulled everything together. Rom was both formal and charming, whereas Kizzy is aloof and understandably vulnerable. The romance between them was fun to read, although I would have liked to have known a little more about Rom beyond his family history.
Ms. Mason introduces an interesting premise and characters I’d like to read more about. I hope to see more of the world(s) she created.
This book sucked me in from the very beginning. The writing was top notch, wrapped around a story line with twists and turns that kept me turning the cyber page on my kindle. I highly recommend this for those you aren't looking for anything too dark and who like a nice romance thrown in. Highly recommended!
Teenagers, vampires, ghouls, a wizard, resistance fighters, Buckingham Palace, wormholes, herbal remedies, parents, high school, alternate universes, vortices, romance, death, divorce, PTSD, urban spelunking, fast-paced action, believable dialogue ~ this book has it all. I could not put it down. Bravo !
I had a student read this book on my behalf, and she was absolutely crazy about it. She recommended it to her friends, but then recommended that (because of the language) I should not add it to my classroom library shelf.
Note: I received this book through a first-reads giveaway
I liked the author's novella better. This book was just too long and drawn out. It could have been ended a lot sooner by leaving out many of the little side stories that were mentioned but never readdressed or tied tied up. The whole idea of multiple universes was cool though!
I enjoyed the story! I'm glad the main character, Kizzy (odd name!!), is not a whiny teenage girl. She does what must be done, she is cleaver, and gets the good guy. That's all I require in a book!!
The story was okay and decently written but I didn't feel particularly drawn to any of the characters. They were just....there. It was a freebie so in that sense, I suppose it was average.
This book starts off with a girl on a bridge and her dad pointing a gun at her telling her to jump or he will shoot. Completely original and refreshing and I couldn't put it down.
