So I see quite a few bad reviews of this one, so I went in with super low expectations...but I actually enjoyed it!! Let me count the ways...

THE GOOD
1) Really enjoyed the writing, by Eric Weiner (tee, hee, WIENER). It was written in 1st-person, which I feel is a rarity in our beloved vintage YA's! I really loved the "voice" of Holly, our horny, ditzy self-absorbed protag who bears a striking resemblance to "Marisa Tomei from Untamed Heart" 😂❤️
2) Lots of fun pop culture call outs! Holly and her boyfriend go to see The Dark Half, "this Stephen King horror flick"...Holly goes to sleep in a black INXS tour shirt...the girls contemplate going to a Red Hot Chili Peppers concert...and It's a Wonderful Life plays ad nauseam on TV during Christmas break. Rad!!
3) Had a good laugh at our protag and her self-proclaimed "slutty" ways. In one scene, they 😂

THE BAD
1) My ancient and tired brain can not handle more than 4 characters. This book has like, 7 or 8? I lost count.
2)
3) Low on the kills, but I will say the last death is pretty gnarly and shocking.
4)

4 stars for this entertaining read...or shall I say...4 falling turds 🤣🤣🤣💩💩💩💩

On the last day of reading this book, my true love gave to me—
5 severed fingers.
4 flying turds.
3 red herrings.
2 dead bodies.
1 crazy ending.

…And a motivation I didn’t expect.

Our protag is overtly flirty and unapologetic, following her whims and enjoying her life without a care in the world, but someone thinks she needs to be…taken down a peg.

Or…killed.

This one is riddled with typos and fat shamey moments, unfortunately, but the outlandish, scandalous, and tense scenes make up for it. I love the sassy and vain protag and how she casually mentions watching porn on cable and making out with a few too many guys—so rare to see this kind of behavior in a YA horror.

Yes, it’s another revenge stalker story, but I do love a crazy person who commits to a theme.

Less of a horror and more of a thriller, but I love thrillers just as much as horror despite my name. It’s a fun guess who as our main lead is stalked by her “true love” who threatens to kill her on Christmas Day and over the course of 12 days she gets a gift each more mysterious and paranoid inducing than the last a la kin to the 12 days of Christmas. It’s fun, seasonal and overall I just loved it.

I really liked this book. I probably should have waited to read it around the holidays as I love a Christmas horror book. Holly our main character is getting gifts from her “true love” and all of them are plays on the twelve days of Christmas. While not a total horror book I would say more of a thriller. The whole who is it sending the gifts is a pretty good story filled with lots of twists and red herrings. I will say the bad guy is kind of a lame reveal with the one clue giving it away in the last 20 pages. Other than that the build up to the climax was a fun ride.

While it isn't something that make me think twice while reading the book, it's a decent book with plenty of scares and action with a fun premise.

Not much I can say about the main character. She's the typical teenage girl who has some relationship problem and that's all I can say about her. However I did get sick of her accusing the person throughout the book which really grow repetitive.

One particular side character I dislike is Holly's best friend who seem to treat Holly like dirt for no particular reason sometimes and even her reason for instigating the act just seems more petty than reasonable.

I would say the gifts Holly receive from the killer range from actually creepy to standard. There's one gift I find disgusting but overall they're mostly tame.

The book may provide chilling moments and seems to have some twist and turn every chapter so I think the book's worth a read for horror genre. The only thing that's keeping this book from being perfect is that the characters aren't interesting.
