Things that go bump in the night have always intrigued me. Sometimes those things are human; other times, not so much. I really played with this in my Hidden series, that reveals humans with the essence of gods who walk the knife's edge between Miami and a magical world of passion and danger. Part dragon, angel, or sorcerer, they must fight their own kind, demons, and the lure of their darkest nature.

If you’re familiar with my Tina Wainscott books, you know I'm fascinated with all things psychic. In my award-winning Offspring series, I throw a group of strangers with inexplicable psychic abilities together in a fight for their lives. As Tina, I write romantic suspense with magical realism elements (Love & Light series), The Justiss Alliance series (military romantic suspense), romantic drama in the Falling Series, and psychological suspense. Altogether I’ve published thirty-four novels and five novellas. See more www.JaimeRush.com and www.TinaWainscott.com

First thing to say about this book, Not recommended for a young audience. I would say late teens and up depending on their maturity level. That said, I LOVED IT. I read it in less than 24 hours total and that was while watching my son. I could not put it down. I had to read it on my iPod because my nook wouldn't recognize it for whatever reason, but it was so good that I didn't mind. Also, this was an ARC book so it has not been finalized for production. I have one suggestion in that department.

This story takes on three different perspectives throughout. You see things through Lachlan, Jessie, and Russel's eyes. This happens through out the entire book and sometimes switches perspectives in each chapter. The hardest part about the read was realizing when the perspective was shifting. It could have just been how the iPod viewed the story, but I think that there needs to be some kind of line to split the sections to let the reader know that you are changing to someone else's view point. Most of the time it is very easy to recognize that you have had a scene change, but every now and then I would have to pause and reread a paragraph just to make sure I knew who was telling the story at that time. It's really the only complaint I have at all about it.

To the story...It is hot hot hot! You will be surprised by the way the events turn out and what an amazing job Jaime Rush does at character development. Lachlan is a Scottish decended barbarian at times who has turned monk after an act of violence he cannot forgive himself for. His part in the story is of a man who is trying to regain his honor through discipline and the absence of temptations. Jessie is the one tormented by Darkness, a supernatural element from another dimension that has been passed on to her from her father, a being from another dimension. He mother was killed when she was ten, her father killed (as far as she knew) and her uncle's soul living in her father's body. She loves life even though she lives in constant fear as her uncle has been hunting her down for the last two years. She indulges herself whenever she has the money to do so and feels this driving need to help others even when she feels that there is no help for her. Finally, Russel is Jessie's uncle trapped in her father's body. Russel is trying to get Jessie in order to reincarnate Jessie's mother, the true love of his life. Jessie is unaware of what is driving her uncle through most of the story and therefore believes he is just out to kill her, which really isn't that far from the truth. I won't tell you about that because that's best read in context of the entire story.

Jessie is hiding in the town near Lachlan's home and actually is "dating" Lachlan's brother Magnus at the start of the story. I say dating in quotation marks because really Magnus is pursuing, but they haven't actually dated yet. Jessie had the intention to date Magnus for a short period of time, but nothing serious because she fears the Darkness inside of her would eventually kill anyone she fell for. Events take a huge turn when Russel kills Magnus and forces Jessie to use her Darkness powers to bring him back to life, which is done at the insistence of Lachlan who has no knowledge of what Darkness is. Magnus is out of commission the rest of the story after this, but alive. This event cause Lachlan to insist that Jessie stays with him while they find a way to destroy Russel. Lachlan insists that Jessie is no longer alone in this fight and it is his responsibility to protect his brother's girlfriend so that once Magnus awakes, they may continue their relationship without fear of the future. What Lachlan doesn't realize is that Jessie has more in common with him than he could possibly imagine and he finds himself strongly attracted to her. He also doesn't expect the return of the attraction from her. There are several very intense scenes that will drive you wild. They are not like any scenes I have ever read in another book. I applaud Jaime's creativity in that department.

What happens as they learn more about the Darkness within Jessie? What powers does Lachlan posses? Are they destined to be together and defeat Russel? Will Jessie ever see her father's soul returned to his body again? You will have to read the story to find out when it is released! You will love it!

This is a new to me author, and I picked this book up as a galley on Edelweiss. This book is #6 in the series, but I didn’t really feel lost without having read the others. With that being said, I liked this one so much that I will seek out the previous books and catch up on them.

This story starts out with what I thought was a horrifying prologue. It really set the story up well, to get to know some of the characters. Present day brings us to Jessie. She’s always on the run, ready to move at a moment’s notice. It comes to light that she is running from her uncle, Russell. But now she is in a small town, and she meets a guy she just may like, Magnus.

Magnus is a playboy after being very sheltered for most of his life. And now that he has freedom, he is taking advantage of it. But then he meets Jessie, and whoa, she could be someone he could settle down with for a bit. At least, that’s what he tells his brother Lachlan.

Lachlan and Magnus are very different as far as brothers. Where Magnus is a playboy sowing his wild oats, Lachlan has pretty much made himself a monk, punishing himself for a mistake he’d give anything to take back. But not matter what powers you have, some things you just can’t undo.

That’s right, these people have powers. And they are all different. They are all very different and pretty neat if I do say so myself. They’re a bit different from the usual powers we see, which I liked.

Then Lachlan astral projects to the future, and he sees Jessie standing over Magnus’ dead body, and now he wants answers. But fate is not on their side that day, and Magnus ends up in a coma of sorts and Lachlan has charged himself with protecting Jessie. Whoooaaa, flip!

“She smelled good, the clean scent of her sweat and the sweetness of shampoo. She hadn’t almost gotten him killed, but she was killing him now.”

Lachlan and Jessie soon realize there are sparks between them. But they both have good reasons to douse those flames. This was constantly leaving me in a sense of frustration, good frustration, but still frustration nonetheless. I thought their pairing was so perfect, these two belonged together, and I wanted it to happen now now now! Lachlan was constantly making me swoon with his behavior. I mean, hermit tendencies and alleged psychosis aside, the man sounded pretty damn perfect to me. He is caring, strong, tough and best of all – honorable. But his personal code of honor was really becoming a road block.

“I didn’t want to kill you, but I would have, to save Magnus. Now I’ll kill to save you.”

Seriously? Lachlan, I’m already falling for you, you don’t need to seal the deal – I’m yours!!

What? He wasn’t talking to me? Dang! Not again!

Ok, funniness aside. There is definitely so much more to Lachlan than meets the eye. Don’t get me wrong, I really liked Jessie too, but at times she became a bit too much for me. She was a runner, running her whole life. And now here was her chance to stay and fight, and I just wanted to get on with it already.

But the girl has some baggage. I can’t give it away, but you’ll see. And her whole life has been based on half truths and lies, and things are about to get very bad for her. And there were times I really felt for her. But here she was in Sanctuary (Lachlan’s home) and she was protected. Pretty good deal, if you ask me. I mean, the guy fought with a giant sword for Pete’s sake!

And Lachlan says, “Protect what’s ours”. There is something to basic and attractive about that. To know, actually know, you are safe – and loved. Lachlan, whether he can admit it or not, is a man to be admired.

Ok, I suppose that is enough about Lachlan. Who’d have guessed this review would turn into an episode of “I love Locky” Oh yeah, that’s his nickname. Does it get any better?? Read this book, but maybe start at the beginning. I don’t think its really required, but with any series, its always best to start at the beginning. But hurry up and get to this book because there are some definitely some things in here you do not want to miss! Oh, plus there are a lot of sci-fi type elements to this book (and I imagine the series) that will really appeal to lovers of sci-fi. We’re talking portals to other dimensions, other worlds, all of it!

Lachlan McLeod has the extraordinary ability to astrally project to another place or time. On the verge of addiction, Lachlan ignored his father's warnings and it proved to have deadly consequences. Lachlan now lives a life of solitude and doesn't allow himself anything in the way of pleasure as punishment. But the sweet and beautiful Jessie is a temptation like nothing he's ever encountered. Jessie is hiding from a man who has been after her since the day he destroyed her family. After several attempts to put distance between her and Lachlan so he too isn't hurt, they'll fight as one in order stop a man with a power that can destroy them both.

I wasn't sure what to expect from this book. The main story arc of the series already wrapped up and all the main characters had their stories told. Lachlan hasn't played a huge role in the series and Jessie new. I may have been unsure going in but before I was halfway through, I was hooked.

Lachlan has been punishing himself for months and his brother Magnus is the only family he has left. When a picture Jessie, who his brother recently became interested in, sends his soul into the future to see his brother mortally wounded, Lachlan sets out to save him before its too late. Lachlan is a modern day highlander. He has the Scottish brogue and wields a sword with deadly accuracy. When Lachlan and Jessie alone, he tries his hardest to put aside his rapidly developing feelings for her because he feels it's not honorable knowing his brother cares for her, even though the feelings are mutual. His sexy accent and attractive exterior may have drawn me in but it was his honor and selflessness to help a complete stranger that had me falling for with the reluctant hero.

At a young age, Jessie lost her family to man with unusual powers, similar to her own. Since then, she's been in hiding. Lachlan steps in and decides it's time to help Jessie finally be free of the man by killing him first. Like Lachlan, Jessie is selfless in what she does. Each place she moves to, she risks exposure by helping children with major health problems through fundraising. There are a couple instances of lapse in judgment but nothing that made me want to write her character off completely. If I could commend Jessie on anything, it would be the way she refused to hide while Lachlan fights and the way she brought him back into the world. Lachlan was the champion she needed and Jessie showed him that despite his past, he was worthy of being loved. They didn't make it easy but in the end I thought this book had a very good love story.

Gone is the secret government project and mystery of the alien Essence of the earlier books. The 6th book in the Offspring series features men from parallel dimensions who are capable of manipulating a smoke/fog like substance, called Darkness, into becoming a lethal weapon. I know this sounds sci-fi like but I thought there was more of a paranormal twist to it. All the action and mystery that I've enjoyed in previous books is still there but the new story has taken it into a new and refreshing direction. I can't wait to see what author Jaime Rush has in store next for this series.

I do NOT ever do spoilers in my reviews so please don't expect a ton of information here revolving around the plot.
Darkness Becomes Her is the 6th book in author Jaime Rush's series, Offspring. I was blessed to receive an ARC and have to say this installment of the series was really amazing. When I began this series I truly enjoyed it but had no idea the direction the author was going to take and, I must say, I am quite impressed with all the twists and turns that have evolved.
This installment features Lachlan, whom we met slightly in other books, and Jessie. These two characters share an overwhelming amount of loneliness, guilt and, well, serious sensuality deprivation. Note to readers: this edition may not be suitable for a YA. The sexuality is dealt with in a very natural, honest and up-front manner (which, frankly, I Loved) but may not be okay for some younger readers.
I completely fell in love with these two characters. Lachlan is sexy and vulnerable with no idea of his own value and worth. Who could resist that? Jessie is generous and loving without realizing how much she gives to others. This is a ruthless combination, people! Not to mention that Lachlan fights this attraction so hard because he believes Jessie is his brother Magnus' girl - which she isn't and hasn't been. This leads to some amusing confrontations between the two.
As I indicated above the author is continuing to take us on a very evolved storyline which one could never have envisioned at the beginning. Since I don't reveal spoilers or serious details, this is all I am saying about my experience. Except I can say that this was my favorite book in the series yet and I can NOT wait to see where Jaime Rush is going to take us next!!

I just want to quickly get the few negatives I had out of the way.

Firstly, I was a bit dissapointed that we only got a few glimpses of Eric and Petra, Pope and Cheveyo. I was hoping to see a lot more of the Offspring gang. Unfortunately, this book just didn't hsve the same feel to it as all the others. It could have easily been from a different series.
Another problem I had was the storyline of 'The Void' and 'The Darkness'. Okay, the story was actually pretty clever, with her parents. But it wasn't explained very well and again has nothing to do with this series. I felt the Callorian connection was just too forced, that's all.

Anyhoo, on to the good parts.
I really like the relationship between Lachlan and Magnus. They have now lost both of their parents and have been through so much together, but I love that it has just made them stronger. I like the fact that they are so different from eachother but so close.
"I do care. It's me and you, Locky. We're all we've got."

I loved this next comment from Lachlan. His sense of humour doesn't come out all that often, but when it does, amazing things can happen. LOL
"Yeah, there's something about her, all right. She's a devil worshippping demon-possessed killer... with a stuffed penguin."

The relationship between Lachlan and Jessie was beautiful. Lachlan (in the beginning) thinks that she is Magnus's girl and does everything he can to dampen down his feelings for her. Where she tries so hard to convince him that nothing ever happened between her and his brother, she liked him, yes. But felt nothing for Magnus like she does for Lachlan.
'She looked at his mouth. "I don't want to kiss Magnus anymore." He couldn't breathe. "No?" "I want to kiss you."
His vulnerability was so endearing. He's a real sweetheart.

There were a few pages where I was really annoyed, thinking No way, not another virgin heroine! But thank god, that situation (for me) was quickly resolved when we discover that Lachlan is also a virgin. I don;t know why that made me feel better, but here, ti just worked. He and his family were quite isolated from the outside world growing up. Magnus immediately went a bit wild, wanting to explore everything they had missed. Including women... but Lachlan felt no such need. He was content to stay isolated, punishing himself for his mothers death. I was worried that a virgin hero would be a bit of a let down, but their first sexual scene together was incredible, and they didn't even have sex. That's all I'm sayin' LOL

One of my favourite scenes:
"Look, I'm sorry guys get off easier and faster than girls do..."-Lachlan
I loved that they argued about this, and Lachlan's comment as she left the room was hilarious...
'"Oh, and I won't think less of you if I hear the wee motor going in the night." She flipped him off and stormed down the hallway.' I laughed so hard, I nearly cried.

"I like Magnus. But I fell in love with you."- Jessie

What I liked the most about Jessie was the way she helped Lachlan forgive himself. The mistake he made in the past was a terrible one and he paid the ultimate price. But seeing just how deep his self hate and guilt ran, was heart breaking. I was so happy that she could help him.
It was a bit of an ubrupt ending and I don't think it really counted as an HEA, which was odd. I had hoped for a more happy ending instead if an uncertain one. So I hope we see them again.

Well, despite my minor grievences, I really enjoyed this book and cannot wait for the next installment.

I guess I’ll start by saying this book is fan-freaking-tastic!!! OMG, I love this series! It’s just so good and even though this isn’t my favorite in the series (it’s gonna take a lot more to top Cheveyo and Petra’s book), it’s still a favorite book of mine now. The characters are funny and entertaining, the story is very well written. Not confusing at all for those who haven’t read the previous books. Though I do recommend you start with book 1 because you’d be missing some really great stories if you didn’t read them.

Lachlan…sigh…Lachlan is the best kind of man. Passionate, loving, brooding, strong, sexy and let’s not forget the sexy Scottish accent he got from his mother! Man oh man did I want to eat him up! Hehe I went in to this book knowing what to expect from him. I figured he’d still be the mean angry man from the other books he appeared in. WRONG! Yes, he was angry but damn if he didn’t turn all sweet and mushy by the middle of the book. I was almost prepared to dislike him too but nope, I think I love him! Really I do! I just wanted to hug him and tell him everything would be ok, that he should stop placing blame on himself and live…but Jessie took care of that! :) And Jessie, wowee! Aside from Zoe (my fave female character in the series) Jessie is a fave now. I LOVE that she kicked his butt! She’s one kick-ass chick but she’s also willing to be a little vulnerable and accept help. There’s nothing I can’t stand more than a heroine that can’t accept help when it’s offered. Jessie didn’t want to but she did it anyway because it needed to be done! That made her stronger if you ask me. With both Lachlan’s background and Jessie’s background, they were made for each other!
The chemistry was explosive and without giving anything important away, they were very creative with that chemistry. If you’ve read it, you know exactly what I’m talking about, probably even know the exact page too because that scene was SO sexy! So so sexy!!! I re-read it like 6 times before I was ready to move on. LOL

Now for Magnus…I’m going to cry if he doesn’t get his own book! I NEED to know what happens with him. Especially with that ending…totally left hanging, I almost started yelling at my Kindle because dang it, I need more! LOL Jaime, I know you’ll read this (well I hope you will) I’m begging you to please not make us wait too long. Please! It’s gonna kill me not knowing. :) Pope was his normal self, very mysterious. I’d love for him to get a book too because he’s been a huge part of this series but I’ll survive if I can just find out about Magnus! :)

Oh and I can’t forget about that little twist in the story. I loved it, it was very fitting too! Made me love Lachlan a bit more and I thought ‘the twist’ was very amusing. So funny yet so heartbreaking. *sigh*

Once again I say, this book is fantastic! I give it 5 Stars, if I could give it more I totally would, because it’s just that good! I recommend it to anyone who enjoys Paranormal Romance and even some of those that don’t. Go buy your copy now so I can prove myself right…go on! :)

I haven't read all of the Offspring books, but the series is clearly one with extensive world-building that has grown more and more complex over time. But I think this book does a great job of getting down to basics and focusing on a fantastic romance.

Lachlan is a man who lives in something of a self-imposed exile, ever since he accidentally killed his mother while astral projecting. His father died a short time after her death and now the only thing left in his life that matters is his brother Magnus. As our story begins, Magnus is trying to pull his brother back out into the world and tells him about Jessie, the woman he is hoping to start a relationship with. Lachlan suddenly gets a vision of Magnus dead at Jessie's feet --and knows he can't stop until he finds a way to keep his brother away from her.

Jessie is a woman on the run from her past. Ever since she witnessed her uncle killing her father, her life has never been the same. And now that he is out of prison, she knows he is hunting for her. Jessie knows she carries the same Darkness in her that her uncle does, but she doesn't know what it means. Suddenly, he finds her and in a violent showdown, nearly kills Mangus. She is able to save his life, but only by using the dark gift that she knows will infect him too. He slips into a coma as he recovers.

Lachlan decides to help Jessie hide from her uncle as she tries to figure out how to defeat him. He thinks there is much more between her and Magnus than there really is. And he feels like he can find some redemption in saving his brother's girl. But it becomes much more difficult to be honorable as he starts to fall for her.

Usually I cringe from adult virgin heroines, but here, Jessie has a good reason for her chastity. She is afraid her Darkness would harm her lover. And I was very excited to learn that our hero is a virgin too. Once you toss in the virginity with her fears of hurting him and his fears of betraying his brother... it's like the perfect storm of sexual tension. I really, really enjoyed the progression of the romance here.

As for the paranormal element of the story, I felt like this was the clearest explanation I have seen in this series on the origins of the characters' supernatural powers. And for the first time ever, I finally understood what "darkness" is. It's all still a bit convoluted, but I felt like I "got it" enough to be able to enjoy the book.

There were lots of twists and turns and I laughed out loud a few times too. The book had heart, danger, and sex appeal. My only complaint was that it ended before we could see the repercussions of the relationship. Hopefully, the next book will fill in those blanks.

Uh, what?

Okay I understand why it ended on a mini-cliff hanger but WHY!?

Lachlan is a great hero, he'd fit in in 17th century Scotland and because of his secluded upbringing he was a virgin. Oh and he's tortured because he killed his mother by accident while crazy.

Jessie doesn't know anything about the Callorians and the Offspring so we learn with her what the 'Darkness' is (it's good) which clears up some questions left over after The Darkness Within.

Early on in the novel Lachlan has a vision of his brother Magnus dead. Since his abilities have been gone due to the antidote for a while Magnus is skeptical especially when Lachlan insists that his crush Jessie will do the killing.

Jessie, hunted by her father/uncle (it's complicated) is attacked while the brothers are there and they defend her, Magnus receiving a fatal blow. Jessie saves him, gifting him with 'The Darkness' in the process.

Excellent installment can't wait for Magnus' book.

We haven't seen much of Lachlan or Magnus so far in this series, so I was intrigued by this book as the boys are more on the fringes of the Offspring group.

I really liked the dynamic between the brothers. You can see that they have a great relationship and love to tease each other. Now that I am done with the book I worry about how things will go with them. Lachlan really tried to hold himself back from any kind of relationship with Jessie. It was almost comical his flip remarks to Jessie about how he was only helping her to give her back to his brother. I loved how Jessie would give him crap about it and then flat out tell him that it pissed her off and the reason why. Jessie was very blunt with her feelings and her life once she trusted Lachlan, which made things even harder for him.

I found the trouble that Jessie was in to be intriguing. Part of me wasn't buying into the whole concept, but the other part of me was horrified by what was happening. It was interesting how this new trouble brushed up into the trouble that has been plaguing the Offspring.

I liked how this one ended, but do worry about Magnus. Guess I will just have to wait for the next book to find out what happens with him.

Darkness Becomes Her is the sixth installment in the Offspring Series by Jaime Rush.
In this story we read about Lachlan McLeod and Jessie Bellandre
I loved the buildup in the relationship between Jessie and Lachlan, They didn't just jump into bed and fall in love. They struggled with their feelings and Lachlan's honor towards his brother. It was nice to read that Lachlan had never been with a woman before.....but that didn't mean he didn't know what he as doing. The love scenes were well written.
This was the first book in this series by Ms. Rush that I have read. As a series book I didn't feel lost not having read any others. I definitely am interested in reading the rest of the Series and I cannot wait to read the next book.
My only complaint was the ending. I was waiting to turn the page to see Lachlan go see Magnus when he awoke and to tell him what happened, but it just ended, But it just makes me (not that I wasn't going to anyway) more anxious to read the next book.
Thank you Jaime for the opportunity to read and review Darkness Becomes Her....I highly recommend this book and the Series.

Asher's review posted on Guilty Pleasures

Darkness Becomes Her is a well written tale of the unknown! I was skeptical at first, having never read anything by Jamie Rush before this book. But now I am most definitely hooked!

What I loved most was that it wasn't your typical paranormal romance that you see out there today. There was no vampires, no were animals, a conspiracies fanatic might be able to see our government, or any government doing something like this. I certainly loved the guilt ridden hero of the book, and how he tries to be honorable for his brother, while battling his attraction.

The heroine of the book is an inspiration as well, taking gut wrenching fear, and facing t head on, there isn't many people out there that are actually able to do that sort of thing, my hat off to those that do.

All in all a really good story that I would love to read again, as well as the next book.!

I recieved this book from GoodReads as a first read winner. Thank you!

At first I was a little skeptical about the characters. The character descriptions were good, but I could not understand why the characters behaved the way they did to certain events. As I continued to read and the story line was developed it became evident why some parts of the characters where hidden. The two main characters each faced a dramatic life altering event in their past. These events have caused the characters to keep parts of themselves hidden as a way of protecting not only themselves, but others around them.
By the end of the book I found I could not put it down. It is a marvelous read for anyone who enjoys paranormal stories.

This is one of my favorite series and after reading the novella The Darkness Within I couldn't wait to find out just what Darkness was and how it was going to affect The Offspring. When I found out Darkness Becomes Her was about Lachlan McLeod I squeed like the fangirl I am. Jaime Rush continues to impress and amaze me. She took this series in a direction I didn't expect at all when it started and Darkness Becomes Her had me wishing I had a full day to myself so I could finish the book. This was my first book from this author ...and I was hooked right off the bat. I was drawn in by the storyline and there was action around every corner. If you like strong men and even stronger women..then you will want to follow this series. Paranormal has sky rocketed these last few years and this series is at the top. Loved it like all the rest . . . But the ending, *sigh! Don't want to say anymore and ruin it for those who haven't read it yet, now it's going to b even harder waiting for the next if that's at all possible. But I really loved the love story with these two too. Each one is so much it's own story!

This was a very interesting book. I like Jaime's new world with all of its creations. I love the honor of Lachlan the best! Great work.

I don’t usually start reading in the middle of a series but I found this book at a thrift store and it looked interesting enough that I decided to just jump in. I think that may have been a mistake though because I felt like there was just too many different mythologies going on in this book. There are people who can astral teleport, aliens, people who can turn into smoke, and probably more that I’m forgetting. It wasn’t hard to follow what was going on and I think the author wrote it in such a way that it was accessible and easy to understand, even as my first book the series. However I just felt that there were too many different kinds of beings and histories all vying for attention. It was just a lot to handle in one book. Perhaps if I had started with book 1, the introduction of each element would have made more sense instead if trying ti come to terms with them all at once.

I thought the romance was okay. The two definitely have some chemistry but I got kind of annoyed with Lachlan. He’s constantly trying to push his brother on her even though she tells him that they’re not together and that she likes him. I even ended up skimming the scene in which they finally do the deed and I NEVER do that. By that time though I’d kind of lost interest in the romance and my head was spinning from the convoluted mystery surrounding Jessie’s family.

This book was just okay for me. I don’t feel the need to read the other books in the series. If you do decide to read this series, I’d recommend starting from the first book.

I don't generally like paranormal romance, but it seems like I SHOULD like it, so I keep giving the genre another chance. This one seemed like it had potential, but then ... it didn't.

You will love this book if you enjoy the following descriptive gems found within its covers:

"Those last words dug onto her, like the beak of a raven digging onto the pulpy flesh of an orange."
*
"He was beautiful in the moonlight, shifting beyond humanity to a silvered demigod. That stirred her in a place she'd never felt before, drawing her to him, to the dangerous edge of him."
*
"It all stirred inside her, like a boiling witch's cauldron."

Personally, that doesn't really do it for me.

This is, it turns out, #6 in a series. I have not read the other 5, and I did not feel left out or confused. I now have a pretty good idea of what most of the other 5 are about, based on throwaway comments throughout this book. I got this one because I saw the guy on the cover compared to Angel. Stupid, I know.

Jessie, formerly Ally, is on the run from Big Bad Russell (she changed her name to make it harder for him to find her). He's her uncle, and she's not real sure what he wants, but she saw him kill her parents when she was 10 so she figures it's not good. She's got some sort of unknown Dark Power within her, and so does her Uncle Russell. Jessie meets Lochland when he comes to warn her off her blossoming romance with his brother, Magnus, because Lochland saw the future and saw Jessie standing over Magnus's dead body. Seems like a good reason to end a relationship, to be sure. Events ensue, yadda yadda yadda, Magnus ends up in a coma, and Jessie and Lochland are holed up in his secret sanctuary of a house in the woods. Lochland is handy with a sword, and sometimes he has a Scottish accent. They exercise a lot, don't wear a lot of clothes, and admire each other's bodies, but it would be WRONG to hook up with your brother's girl. Although Jessie insists she was never dating Magnus, they never even kissed! ... You can see where this is going. No surprise which brother she ends up in bed with.

One interesting angle is that both Jessie and Lochland are virgins. I know some people like to see that, so I figure I'd mention it.

I didn't particularly love this, but it was "okay" and two stars means "okay" ... so ... 2 stars. I'm laid up for the weekend with a sprained ankle and this fit the bill. Along with the other 3 or 4 books I'm reading!

3.5 Stars - a little disappointing

I'm going to start off by saying that I really love this series. The Offspring series is one of my favourites and I have read every book in the series. Saying that this book disappointed me.

It is more of a spin off from the original series, which I don't mind at all, the problem was that is totally lacked the passion of the previous books. For me Lochlan and Jessie could have been side characters in someone elses book, I didn't love them and for some reason I didn't connect with them like I usually do with great characters.

There were just too many things in this book that annoyed me. The virgin thing! Really again? For me the virgin thing is getting old and boring. If I'm reading historical romance where it is appropriate for the times to be a virgin then fine but not in a book like this. Having said that I do understand why she did it and it does make sense, it's just a personal thing. Then there was the "relationship" between Lochlan and Jessie, I felt that it just lacked passion and fell flat and I was a bit annoyed by Lochlan's determination that Jessie belonged to Magnus... really? They went on one date! And my biggest pet peeve of them all... no girl over the age of 10 should be calling her father "daddy" unless she has some serious issues.

To be honest I'm sitting here trying to think about what happened in the book and I can't really remember. It wasn't memorable and didn't make me ignore my boyfriend so that I could finish it.

Despite all my issues with this book it's not a bad book. I don't think Jaime Rush could write a bad book. She's a great story teller and her imagination is amazing. It just wasn't as good as the others, which is the problem with writing a series, and I missed the other characters. You could easily read this book as a stand alone, you don't need to have read the other Offspring books to read this one, though I do recommend you read the novella The Darkness Within, it just gives you more insight into the Darkness aspect of the book.

I have complete faith that the next book in the series will make up for my disappointment in this one and I look forward to reading it.

This book just didn’t do it for me. I did read the entire thing so it’s not a DNF but I never felt any sort of emotional attachment to either characters making it even harder to get through.

I found the story line to just be dull. I wanted more action associated with the intrigue surrounding Jessie and finding out exactly what her powers are and what the “darkness” is. The whole story is very vague in that sense and I always wanted more information. I didn’t much care for Lachlan either or finding out what his deal was with his powers.

There were three different perspectives in the book, Jessie, Lachlan and Russel and the transitions between them could be hard to follow. Could have been just the ARC addition that I read, but it was distracting and it hurt the connections I was attempting to make. Sometimes these jumps weren’t just chapter to chapter but within each individual chapter making it even harder.

I never felt the heat with these two. They do a lot of dancing around each other because Lachlan is convinced she is meant to be with his brother and he didn’t want to betray that. I understood, to a point. Jessie is constantly telling him that she only went on one date with the brother and that there were no feelings involved with them. Yet he still hold off. Because of this rift the heat just wasn’t there. What they do end up doing feels forced and just wrote in a attempt to move the story forward and push them together. The brother spends the entire book out of commission and not much is resolved with his personal story line and that left me wanting.

The vocabulary of the power in this book for the powers is just ridiculous. The author uses words like “darkness” to describe the anomaly that is Jessie and Russel’s powers. Then when they use these powers it’s referred to as “became”. What? How generic can we be? It felt like the author wrote the book, put generic words in meaning to go back and replace them when she actually thought of something interesting…and then never did.

I just didn’t “get it” . Not once could I seem to muster enough emotion to care about these two characters together. I wish it would have been different. I wan’t to like it, I just didn’t. I have not read the other books in this series, and based on this one, I won’t be continuing on.

I give Darkness Becomes Her by Jaime Rush 2 stars

This one is a lot different then the others in the series, this one has to deal with a Darkness that two brother brought with them from Pope's and their own dimension. Jessie/ Ally is a daughter of one of the brothers and she has been on the run or in foster homes for the most of her life from the man (Russell) that has invaded her fathers body with Darkness and he is out to take Jessie and use her in a sick way but she never throught she would 'man up' and face Russell until she runs into Magnus and Lachlan McLeod then her world is turned upside down and help her face her fears. Lachlan is still shutting him self away since he accidentally killed his mom but turns out it really want not his fault for a ghost that attached himself to Lachlan since the last time hie projected himself into the past. Anyways when she sees the future about his brother dying then his is on a mission to prevent that event from happening but he never thought he would find himself falling for a girl his bother wanted in the beginning. Magnus has been in a coma for most of this book but he is waking up towards the end and Lachlan is happy but scared to tell his brother all that has happened. We do get to see Eric, Petra, Pope, Fonda and Cheveyo and they step in to help watch over and help in a way.

I have to say that the series is now back on track; in my opinion! I loved this story between Lachlan and Jessie! Laclan's naivety was so refreshing, I fell in love with him from the start! I think that is what made their relationship work so well was the fact that they both had so little experience in dealing with the world and the people in it. It made them a perfect match and it was charming to see them "awaken" to their own desires and to figure out what exactly to do with them.
The only thing I didn't care for was how the ending left you not knowing what will happen with Magnus. I imagine that is the point!! Me being impatient, wants to know right now!! Other than that I thought the book had the right amount of sexual tension, action, and a great romance that unfolded throughout the story. I loved it and I look forward to the next "Offspring" book..I just hope I don't have to wait too long!

I was in the middle of this one when it expired from my nook-Does anyone know if Edelweiss allows you to re-download like you can at netgalley?

To be clear:
This is only DNF because I didn't finish it, not because I wasn't enjoying it. It is a reminder to myself. I literally no longer have the book.

I'll probably buy it and finish it one day, but I've got so much on my plate, it's not going to be today.

Really enjoyed reading these two stubborn characters. Each unique in their own way connecting because of a brother and a glimpse into a future moment-the adventure begins. Filled with insights on each danger begins and love will end it. Ride along with Jessie and Lachlan as they fight to save the ones they love in all the while trying to deny the growing attraction for each other for the cause of honor but after all love is what conquers all.
