About the author

Harry Kurt Victor Mulisch along with W.F. Hermans and Gerard Reve, is considered one of the "Great Three" of Dutch postwar literature. He has written novels, plays, essays, poems, and philosophical reflections.
Mulisch was born in Haarlem and lived in Amsterdam since 1958, following the death of his father in 1957. Mulisch's father was from Austria-Hungary and emigrated to the Netherlands after the First World War. During the German occupation in World War II he worked for a German bank, which also dealt with confiscated Jewish assets. His mother, Alice Schwarz, was Jewish. Mulisch and his mother escaped transportation to a concentration camp thanks to Mulisch's father's collaboration with the Nazis. Due to the curious nature of his parents' positions, Mulisch has claimed that he is the Second World War.

A frequent theme in his work is the Second World War. His father had worked for the Germans during the war and went to prison for three years afterwards. As the war spanned most of Mulisch's formative phase, it had a defining influence on his life and work. In 1963, he wrote a non-fiction work about the Eichmann case: The case 40/61. Major works set against the backdrop of the Second World War are De Aanslag, Het stenen bruidsbed, and Siegfried.
Additionally, Mulisch often incorporates ancient legends or myths in his writings, drawing on Greek mythology (e.g. in De Elementen), Jewish mysticism (in De ontdekking van de Hemel and De Procedure), well-known urban legends and politics (Mulisch is politically left-wing, notably defending Fidel Castro since the Cuban revolution). Mulisch is widely read and (according to his critics) often flaunts his philosophical and even scientific knowledge.
Mulisch gained international recognition with the movie De Aanslag (The Assault), (1986) which was based on his eponymous book. It received an Oscar and a Golden Globe for best foreign movie and has been translated in more than twenty languages.
His novel De ontdekking van de Hemel (1992) was filmed in 2001 as The Discovery of Heaven by Jeroen Krabbé, starring Stephen Fry.
Amongst many awards he has received for individual works and his total body of work, the most important is the Prijs der Nederlandse Letteren (Prize of Dutch Literature, an official lifetime achievement award) in 1995.

I wish there was some way I could get all the time I invested in this ridiculous masturbation-session of a novel back. Wasted almost two weeks of my summer attempting to wade through this self-aggrandizing mess of a "story" and am so annoyed. There are few books I start and fail to finish, but this book tested my limits like none before. I made it through about 500 pages before realizing that the story wasn't building up to ANYTHING, and that there were entire chapters that were simply vehicles for Mulisch to show off his entirely useless knowledge of random arcana. I would skip entire chapters because I was so bored and impatient, and would then force myself to go back and read them just for the sake of being thorough - lo and behold, I found that I had missed nothing, and instead had LOST a precious 20 minutes of my life. I'm all for weaving large swaths of religious, political, and musical knowledge into a narrative, but it has to be done in a compelling way - see Foucalt's Pendulum as a great example - but the story here is so slow and pointless that it actually hurts my head just to think about.

Max and Onno's friendship was fun for the first few hundred pages before really strange circumstances forced them into peculiar familial roles, and while I'm ambivalent about Onno (his inflated self-ego is oftentimes annoying but has its endearing moments), I absolutely loved the character of Max. But again, the horrendously uninteresting narrative gives him nothing to do, and after he's unceremoniously removed from the story 3/4 of the way through, there's literally nothing left in the novel that makes it worth slogging through. An absolute disappointment.

Het enige voordeel dat het boek heeft, is dat het snel uitgelezen is. Maar mocht die stapel papier veroorzaakt zijn door een andere schrijver dan Mulisch in een ander taalgebied dat het onze, er zou niets meer van overblijven.

Gekunsteld, hoogdravend, houterig, breedsprakerig, betweterig, Magnum Opus my ass. De arrogantie van Mulisch (”kijk eens hoe veel ik weet! zie eens hoe handig ik een filosofische roman met een psychologische roman met een sleutelroman met een avonturenroman verweef! 65 hoofdstukken–is het iemand al opgevallen dat ik dit jaar precies 65 ben?! lijk ik zo niet een beetje op Dante?”) druipt van elke pagina af. Officier in de Orde van Oranje-Nassau indeed. Zilveren Erepenning van de Stad Amsterdam, ‘t is wat.

Het plot is achterlijk (lees gerust maar de samenvatting na), zelfs de onderdelen hebben een kinderachtige naam (”het begin van het begin”, “het einde van het begin”, “het begin van het einde” en –wait for it, wait for it– “het einde van het einde”). De driehoek Onno/Ada/Max is ongeloofwaardig, het hele hoofdstuk Cuba is van een aan het onwaarschijnlijke grenzende saaiheid, deel twee (einde van het begin dus) is bij nader inzien compleet overbodig, wellicht was de situatie rond Ada in deel drie nuttig maar ik zou niet weten waarom, de jonge Quinten is een karikaturale non-persoon, de iets oudere Quinten een etter van een non-persoon, en de hele ontknoping leest als Umberto Eco maar dan in zeer dunne spoeling. En als men in het woordenboek naar une fin en queue de poisson gaat kijken, staat daar een hyperlink naar het einde van De ontdekking van de Hemel (het einde van “het einde van het einde”, als het ware, ha ha).

Om nog niet te spreken van de hele pseudo-wetenschappelijke klaptrap (Mulisch zou niet nalaten te vertellen dat dit een anglicisme is, dat het oorspronkelijke woord, claptrap, in 1799 voor het eerst gebruikt werd en zoveel betekent als “pretentieuze nonsens”): ontcijfering van het etruskisch! De discos van Phaistos! Quasars! DNA! Kijk eens hoe eclectisch mijn kennis!

Mulisch denkt zich duidelijk zowel thuis te voelen in gevoelens en persoonlijkheden als in wetenschap en filosofie, maar helaas: in het lichtere werk (het begin van “het begin van het begin”) klinkt alles gekunsteld en geforceerd, in de wetenschap laat hij steken vallen (met de discos van Phaistos als voorbeeld), in de grote ideeën is hij ondraaglijk hoogdravend, en op het einde van het boek weet de lezer niets meer over de personages dan in het begin.

Niet dat het die lezer dan nog wat kan schelen, want alvast mijn interesse was hij al lang voor het einde kwijt.

Afrader. Laten liggen. Lees Use Of Weapons of, als het echt moet, nog maar eens The Name of the Rose in de plaats.

What stayed with me over the years after reading this brick of a novel on just about every philosophical question any man has ever asked himself (intentionally choosing gender here, by the way), was a vague envy of the angels observing humankind while it is struggling in the dark.

They KNOW, while we have to guess. What a disadvantage that gives us. Do they exist? No clue for humanity, so all the power remains with those who know they exist. It struck me that if I were a believer in Christian myths, I would have to hold a very deeply rooted grudge against the power play of the divine creature(s) in charge.

As an educator, I have learned to lead by giving support and by showing those in my care why I am expecting what I am expecting, at what speed my students are supposed to develop and with what tools they are supposed to work. I have learned to build a scaffold around the learning process to give clear and logical guidance and anxiety-free space for making mistakes. Well, those heavenly creatures, with a lot more power than I will ever be able to use in a classroom, are doing the exact opposite.

They play and manipulate and enjoy the stupidity of those kept in deliberate limbo. No my dear angels, you are little devils!

Discovering heaven means appreciating our faulty earth.

Before starting this review, I went back and looked at what other books I’ve dismissed with a single star. Very few, it turns out. I’m reluctant to be so disparaging unless the book has been deeply unpleasant to read and I wish that I had not had the experience of reading it. So, yes, that’s right, Twilight gets two stars and this gets one. Isn’t that a statement?

I had high expectations. I was thrilled to find that the previous reader of my copy had left a Dutch train ticket (Middelburg to Amsterdam, second class) in the book as a bookmark. How charming is that? The ticket is old enough that the price is in guilders rather than Euros.

This book is meant to be “the” Dutch novel. How very intriguing, thought I. I’m Dutch, so I should certainly familiarize myself with this “exhilarating, magnificent, and dangerous” (Times Literary Supplement) work, called “one of the most entertaining and profound philosophical novels ever written” (Washington Post). No and no. This book is a mess.

First, my structural complaints. There is a frame story wherein two angelic beings discuss their interference in human affairs. This conversation is so unutterably awkward and contrived that I nearly gave up immediately. I have rarely seen such a strange combination of barefaced expository dialogue with complete lack of content. Angel #1 lectures angel #2 on what they obviously both already know without enlightening the reader on anything that will give us a hook into this story that is about to unfold. The story itself is meant to be narrated by one of the angels in the first person. The first sentence of Chapter 1 makes this clear: “At the stroke of midnight I contrived a short-circuit.” After this one sentence, the reader is dropped into a shifting third-person narrative that switches between the central characters and does all the things we would expect from a typical third-person narrative form: deeply woven internal thought-processes as the characters ponder their circumstances and work through their anxieties. There’s no angelic commentary or even the remotest hint of an angelic perspective in the narrative, so essentially the frame story completely falls away during these hundreds of pages long sections of human goings-on. We get a brief interlude for the angels to check in at page 195, where they briefly digress about Francis Bacon, and then the next insertion of the frame story is on page 547, where they actually say the following:

--I thought we were never going to get here.
--I told you at the outset that the mission had been accomplished, hadn’t I?
--It’s probably because of your compelling narrative. That’s inevitable with a good story: you don’t experience it as a report in retrospect; it happens in the telling, as it were.

Please. It’s like your editor called you and pointed out the structural problems in your novel and you decided to explain them away by congratulating yourself (in the narrative persona of an angel, no less) for being so incredibly compelling as a storyteller that the reader is likely to forget that this is all supposed to be an angel reporting his “work” to a superior. What can I do, I’m just so amaaazing. It’s an angel thing, just go with it, okay?

I bet Mulisch’s editor was a woman, and that 1) he wanted to sleep with her and 2) he never listened to a single thing she said. Because here is my second major problem with this mess of a novel. The casual, backhanded misogyny pervasive over the entire course of the book is almost breathtaking. It starts with the angels, who are clearly predisposed to focus on the males in their plot: “The problem was that if he was to be our envoy, he would have to remember the mission, once he was in a body of flesh and blood--that is, he would have to be capable of hitting on the outrageous idea and, furthermore, have the strength of will and courage to execute it. I say ‘he’ because it didn’t seem a job for a ‘she.’” Well, thanks. Whatever, moving on to the characters within this mess of a plot: Max and Onno, two men, hold the central relationship in the story. Ada, the woman they encounter who later births the all-important child that will fulfill the mysterious angelic purpose, is given no agency in the story. Her role is to receive both men’s wisdom (and sperm), patiently endure their bizarre lifestyles, and then slip conveniently into a coma for the remainder of the story. Meanwhile, Max sleeps with everything in skirts almost as though he can’t help it--it’s just a gift he has, right? All women want to sleep with him, and he just knows it, and the women know he knows it and just can’t help themselves. Sure.

And then just a few other pet peeves:

1. The long philosophical conversations that are supposedly so profound? Aren’t. In fact, they often devolve into syllogistic jokes that are neither interesting nor meaningful to the story. It’s just irritating.
2. The Phaistos disc. Don’t tease, Mulisch. I thought you were going to take that somewhere -- anywhere! But no. What a waste.
3. What was with the sudden switch up for the past 150 or so pages. Suddenly I was reading something uncannily like The Da Vinci code. Honestly, I would rather have been reading The Da Vinci Code. It was much more entertaining.

But I’m keeping the train ticket.

A highlight of Dutch literature, but a bit uneven in quality. The first 400 pages are sublime, especially in the drawing of the love triangle Onno-Ada-Max. Every page is a gem, and the situation sketches sometimes are very ingenious.

But then the story falters: starting with the comatose state of Ada the suspense slips; the Bildungsroman that follows around Quinten is quite readable, but the detective story with which the novel ends in the final chapter to me was an anti-climax. Just like Hugo Claus (the king of Flemish literature), Mulisch (the king of literature in the Netherlands) seems to lapse into automatisms: often pedanticly boasting with his knowledge and insights, often also too verbose and inserting personal experiences in a too obvious way.
Nevertheless: this is absolutely worth reading! (3.5 stars)

An ambitious book. Intending to cover EVERYTHING. So the main characters are all polymaths, well-read but otherwise shallow, symbols really. And they're male too. Oh, there are females characters, but they conceive and then get felled by a lightning-struck tree; or they sneak in a younger man's bedroom and then leave in the morning without speaking. Although, in gender-fairness, a male can be sitting, about to uncover the secret to the universe, and a meteorite comes out of the sky and pulverizes him.

(Sorry, I'm just bitter because the Pittsburgh Pirates yesterday clinched their record-setting 20th consecutive losing season. And then there's the whole Ryder Cup thing).

This book had more than a few wonderful moments.

A father (?) asks his son, "Do you believe in God, Quinten?"

"Never thought about it. What about you?"


This morphs into a perfect comparison of two similar sentences, defining the difference between an agnostic -- "I don't believe that God exists" -- and an atheist -- "I believe that God does not exist". Never quite thought about it that simply.

Ultimately, I thought the plot couldn't keep up with the lofty ambition of the book.

They go searching, searching, searching for the true, the only answer, the key to unlock it all. It's (drumroll, please), the, uh, Ark of the Covenant, and the Ten Commandments. Raiders of the Lost Ark but without the whip and the snakes. But, c'mon. The whip and the snakes were the best part.

Er zijn boeken waarvan je spijt hebt dat je ze niet eerder gelezen hebt. Dit is zo'n boek. Ik ben er altijd met een grote boog omheen gegaan, niet in de laatste plaats omdat ik Mulisch zelf een onuitstaanbaar pedante man vond. Maar die mening was blijkbaar een slechte raadgever..

Er zijn weinig schrijvers die zulke diepgang kunnen combineren met een ijzersterk verhaal. Ja het helpt als je iets af weet van de bijbel, griekse mythologie, filosofie, astronomie en kwantum mechanica. Maar zelfs als deze thema's volstrekt vreemd voor je zijn is dit een goed boek, misschien dat je het dan niet waardeert op de volle 5 sterren maar je zal je niet vervelen.Het boek kruipt onder je huid. Volstrekt helder en onontkoombaar marcheert het verhaal voort. Strak gecomponeerd in behapbare hoofdstukken. De proloog kan lastig zijn, maar lees gewoon door, zelfs als je denkt er niets van te begrijpen.

Het boek is doorspekt met theologische, filosofische en wetenschappelijke bespiegelingen, vaak in de vorm van een spitsvondige dialoog tussen 2 van de hoofdpersonen: Onno en Max.Als je niet alles in een keer oppikt is dat helemaal niet erg. Dit boek leent zich er uitstekend voor om te herlezen. Ik ben ervan overtuigd dat ik bij herlezing, over een jaar of twee/drie, nieuwe dingen ontdek. Deze roman bevat een enorme rijkdom en mag met recht een totaalroman worden genoemd.

No mere summary could cover the depths to be found within this novel. Trying to summarize it would not give justice to it's brilliance and complexity. It is not a book to be taken lightly as it requires time to be set aside for it. You will need to want to be challenged as well as entertained before beginning this book. At only 730 pages it still took me three weeks and some odd days to read. Not because it was slow and boring, but because it often distracted me enough to put the book down in order to go wander around thinking about something that arose from the dialogue within.

This is a beautiful tale of friendship and family delivered in the midst of ideas. Ideas of an epic scale. The discussions are everywhere: science, religion, politics, architecture, family, linguistics, art, music, and almost everything else that you will find in a full and rich life. There are many philosophical, as well as meta-physical, tangents that spring up in almost every conversation. Converstions that are intelligent, diverse, probing, witty, and often complicated. My only complaint is that at times I would feel that the main character, Onno, liked to talk just a little too much!


The overarching plot, that wraps around the story of our characters, deals with a conversation between two angels in which a subordinate, tasked with having the Ten Commandments returned to Heaven, is explaining his reasoning behind actions that result in certain coincidences that affects the fate of each character involved in order to lead up to the conclusion at the end. Human knowledge frightens and appalls the divine, and actually threatens their superiority -- so something must be done!


Kudos for Mulisch for writing such a masterpiece that is so much more than the usual literary fluff found on a bestseller list.

Ok, so I was incredibly excited to read this book. It's one of those books I've put off for a couple of years to 'savour' the excitement.

I began reading and was immediately disappointed with the contrived and forcefully formal dialectic and narrative in both the prologue between two overtly sexist angels and chapter one. I decided to try and round off these two factors (formality and sexism) as perhaps character traits which would blend into a narrative and become either criticised or mocked. Nope.

The angels' philosophical discussion was... not only basic but again, awkward. One angel asked the other about a subject, the other angel acknowledged they knew about the subject, and yet the former angel proceeded to tell the other all about the subject in great detail as if the other angel was totally ignorant of the subject. It would be like me turning to my partner and saying:
"Do you know why the sky is blue?"
Partner: "Yes, I do know why the sky is blue."
Me: "The sky is blue because... [enters a long-winded monologue explaining why the sky is blue]"

What was this angelic dialogue for other than for the author to show off their supposed intellectualism and force-feed both angel and reader information both already know in this uncomfortably contrived dialogue?

Then the main narrative began, which was (apparently) narrated by one of the angels, but the narrative wasn't any different from any other third-person omniscient narrator than in any other novel. The first chapter's formality grated me as much as the prologue did. It was written in a weirdly stereotyped way of 'this is how posh and rich people talk' according to someone who had never heard the upper class speak. It was painfully formal for a novel set in the middle of the twentieth century, with the author shoe-horning in philosophical trivia as though they were ground-breaking nuggets to his clearly under-educated, philistine readers. All of this happening with an incredibly bland and meaningless plot which didn't engage me. I didn't know why I was supposed to care about these characters or be interested in their lives at all.

When I hit around 80 pages, I turned to Goodreads to read other reviews. I must be missing something, I thought. Surely I'm overlooking some groundbreaking writing and philosophy which warranted this novel's over 4-star rating. It was through my curious scan through Goodreads that I came across those scathing but eloquent bad reviews which revealed more of the unfolding 'plot' and oh my gosh, I refuse to read such a car-crash of a novel. What a ridiculous, childish, genre-confused mess this novel is about to unfold into. I refuse to engage and waste my life on a 700+ page book which 1) continues to be blatantly misogynistic
2) lacks the promised philosophical exploration and extrapolation and
3) has such a ridiculous plot and ending. How naive and undeserving of my time.

Call me a snob, I do not care. You can't write a book about everything, and it seems as though this is what the author did (and did so badly). The writing isn't engaging enough for me to battle through. I'd rather read a less contrived and non-pseudo-intellectual novel which isn't focussed and driven by the author's literary masturbation. I ceased my interest in reading on page 96. Life is too short.

Long and extremely complex novel – very hard to categorise and incredibly wide-ranging and ambitious.

Womanising astronomer Max Delius (son of a Nazi collaborator who had his Jewish wife – Max’s mother – killed: note this is almost autobiographical as Mulisch had a Jewish maternal family killed in camps and a collaborator father) meets by chance with absent-minded linguist Onno Quist (son of an ex-Prime Minister) and the two strike up a deep almost exclusive friendship, which they only open to musician Ada Brons. Ada has a child actually by Max (having had a relationship first with Max and then Onno) although all characters believe it is probably by Onno. When Ada is put into an irreversible coma in a car crash, Max is seduced by her mother Sophia and racked with guilt that he might be the child’s natural father – he proposes successfully that the two of them bring up the child. Max is eventually killed by an asteroid when he realises an apparent error in astronomical data and further the errors which mean special relativity and quantum mechanics breakdown in the fraction of a time after the big bang could in fact be explained by another body - (the implication is) heaven.

What seems like chance to the characters – most particularly the meeting of Max and Onno is in fact carefully choreographed by unnamed beings – the implication is that they are angels – one more junior and the other very senior. Through their discussions we find that humanity via Francis Bacon made a pact with the devil – in which he gave them scientific progress. Gradually they have taken on most of the powers of God and his angels – the last remaining area being the ability to create life itself, which, with the decoding of DNA underway, is imminent. Accordingly (and this only really emerges in the later stages) God has decided to remove the 10 Commandments from earth and take them back to heaven and then leave earth to its own devices.

Max/Onno have a remarkable friendship – they seem to believe they are “super-men” and spark each other in many forms of religious/political/moral/philosophical musings, including a trip to Cuba to watch Ada play in a cultural programme where they accidentally become delegates at a international subversive/terrorist conference (this conference eventually costs Onno his place in a coalition government years later as well as being where Quentin is conceived).

The part where Quentin grows up with Max/Sophia in an eclectic mix of characters in a set of flats built into an old castle is the hardest to follow and least enjoyable – I found it hard to differentiate the characters or understand the many artistic musings. Onno goes into hiding when his political career is ruined and Max then dies and Quentin decides to seek out Onno.

Last part of the book is the quest of Ouentin firstly to find his father and then to locate a mysterious Citadel he sees in his dreams. While exploring Rome he concludes that the ten commandments were not in fact lost but were removed from the temple at Jerusalem by the Romans and then stored in a church in Rome. He then locates the two tablets and returns them to Jerusalem. Part contains much on history of church, architecture of Rome and Jerusalem but is interesting.

The book is compelling and in fact at times breathtaking in its sheer scope and bewildering array of ideas (the only criticism that can be made is that in presenting Onno, Max and Quentin’s intellect as beyond normal – a fact confirmed by the “angels” – he is effectively crediting himself – the real author of their ideas – with the same genius).

This time around the castle part although still a little disorientating is important as the cast of characters there gives Quentin the essential education he needs (art history, languages, architecture, archaeology, even lock picking) both to envisage and complete his task.

In retrospect having heard Mulisch speak on Siegfried, the theme of the holocaust but beyond that and very specifically the person of Hitler is ever present in the book.

Also in the light of having read Martin Goodman’s Rome and Jerusalem: The Clash of Ancient Civilizations the final part and the detail on both cities becomes the culmination of the book it is meant to be.

I briefly toyed with giving this two stars, given the degree of difficulty Mulisch takes on in this tome. I settled on 1 star because the book pissed me off in so many ways. There were the glaring errors begging for a decent editor (e.g., the claim that 60 million Jews were killed in WWII, which appears in multiple editions). There was the didactic, pedantic explanation of basic science concepts, including those peripheral to the story. There was the stasis in which the characters were frozen for the first 600 or so pages, apparently incapable of development despite the passage of decades. There was the clumsy conceit of a ridiculously labyrinthine plot and the justification (via an angel cum narrator) that it was so because the angel (i.e., the author) could> make it so - this was interesting in Shakespeare's Tempest; here it is just tiresome. There were the many plot devices that are just so precious, like the number chosen as the tattoo on on Auschwitz victim's arm (31415 for the mother of a mathematician). And there are the characters: Max is beautiful, broken, and relentlessly solipsistic; Anno is rich, carelessly amoral, and when his entitlement fails, he withdraws from the world like a spoiled child who whines that he is taking his ball and leaving when the game does not go his way; the women are one-dimensional and mute, contributing to the narrative primarily as sexual partners. Worse, the purported theme of this overlong ramble is God's disaffection with his creation, and in the end amounts as well to taking his ball and leaving. Throw in recurring misogyny, confused philosophy with tautological conclusions, and other crimes against language, and you can see why this book escaped my "did-not-finish" only because I was reading it for a book club discussion.

This book has been charged by others with the criticism of being “intellectual masturbation”. Whenever a book is criticized for being an exercise of “intellectual masturbation” you know it has the potential to be either really incredible at best or obnoxious at worst. But it baffles me that people would use that classification as primarily negative. This is because people mistakenly attribute normative negative content to “intellectual masturbation” when, of course, it is only negative when it is poorly done - successful intellectual masturbation is (in my opinion) synonymous with “great literature” - and perhaps with all great thought. Even when the term is taken at face value - i.e. to gesture at a work that has an element of intellectual frivolity to it - I fail to see why this would be something negative, if done correctly. Obviously frivolity is itself a question-begging term; but granting that there can be intellectual pontification that is indeed frivolous, it in any case serves as wonderful reading (or viewing, or listening) material.

This book is the fruit of wonderful intellectual masturbation (the same term that so many of its negative reviewers have used to disparage it). It is incredibly ambitious, and in my opinion it wonderfully realizes its ambition. Not perfectly, as true perfection can only be gestured at in the realm of potentiality, but intelligently and playfully and creatively, which is probably better than perfectly.
The book raises - explicitly, through dialogue or internal monologue - more philosophical questions than I think any other book I’ve read (raising does not equal answering, of course). The success of this enterprise, which so often lands as cliche or as unsophisticated in other books, is probably due in large part to the writing of the two protagonists who raise the questions. The dialogue between Onno and Max is delightful and thought provoking, and moreover unique. And their relationship - platonic love in both the correct and the colloquial sense - is wonder-ful.
The gamut of topics that this book covers - existence, meaning, religion, heaven, the Holocaust, philosophy, music, modern art, astrophysics, quantum mechanics, math, architecture (and these are merely the topics that are given serious attention, many more are sprinkled into the 750 pages) - is staggering and fascinating. I gained thoughtful and entertaining insight into every one of them.

This book is simultaneously metaphysical and light-hearted, ontological and amusing. Perhaps those are the types of combinations that cause other readers to balk and render a work intellectual masturbation. But if you ask me, that’s simply another wonderful combination, befit to characterize the aforementioned ones :)

730 pages of time that I will never have back.

Not only was the book pretentious, it was also poorly written. Perhaps the translation is to blame, as I read it in English. Whatever the source, the (English) text was choppy, un-inventive, repetitive, and cliché. Mulisch's overuse of similes is nauseating.

The dialogue was also suspect. Instead of realistic, it seemed more the types of smart retort one thinks of only after an argument has concluded.

I'm at a loss as to what other reviewers see in this book. Hopefully it works better in the original Dutch.

كنت أنتظر هذه اللحظة منذ زمن لكي أنتهي من الرواية وأصل إلى نهايتها ليس بسبب الملل بل بدافع الفضول! كانت عيناي ترمشان بسرعة البرق كلما قرأت حرفًا أو كلمةٍ أو سطرًا ، فكلما كنت أقترب من الحقيقة أجدني أبعد بكثير.. فما الذي يحدث؟

"ماكس" عالم الفلك و"أونو" اللغوي الفوضوي، تتقاطع الطرق مع بعضها لكي يصبحا أصدقاء من نوع مختلف وعبثي كشخصياتهم تمامًا، لتدخل "آدا" عازفة التشيلو في حياتهم بصورة عبثية أيضًا ثم في لحظة واحدة تنقلب الأحداث لنخوض رحلة من السماء إلى الأرض لأداء مهمة تتطلب الكثير من الجهد والتضحيات.

هذه الرواية ملحمة من نوع خاص ومميز! أكاد أُجزم أن هذه الرواية من أفضل ما قرأت حتى الآن.. وجبة دسمة من الفلسفة والدين والفن والسياسة والموسيقا والعمارة والتاريخ وعلم الفلك وقد أدى الكاتب دوره على أكمل وجه فأعطى لكل مجال حقه والحديث عنه بما يكفي ليخدم الرواية وحبكتها.
استطاع الكاتب أن يسحبني من يدي ويدخلني عالمه، وظللت واقفة مندهشة من كل ما اقرأه واتخيله! أنها رحلة عبر الأزمنة بشكل مختلف أي أنني في نفس الزمان والمكان وفي ذات الوقت لست في هذا الزمان والمكان. لا يوجد في هذه الرواية حدث لمجرد الصدفة! فكل حدث مرتبط بالآخر بشكل واضح أو غير واضح.

عايزة أشكر المُترجمة على مجهودها الرهيب والواضح في الرواية وأن لولاها ما خرجت هذه الرواية إلى النور. شكرًا أستاذة أمينة عابد على ترجمتك الرائعة.

في النهاية، الرواية جميلة جدًا وتستحق أن تُقرأ وليس مرة واحدة بل عدة مرات.. هذه المرة الأولى التي أقرأها فيها وأتمنى المرة القادمة عندما أكون قد بلغت الثلاثين من عمري أن أعيد قراءتها بوعي مختلف وإدراك تام لجميع المعلومات والحقائق الموجودة بها.

Massively overrated. A decent book, but it fails miserably at what it aims to do: be a major philosophical, historical and literary work. It's quasi-intellectualism probably speaks to many people who know a little about philosophy, history and art, but not too much. They can hold Mulisch in awe all they want, but that doesn't change the fact that this book is actually much more shallow than people think it is.

All the name-dropping, the forced plot-twists and cardboard characters, the overly obvious symbolism, the pushy metaphysics: it's all shallow nonsense. Form and no content, show but no story, tricks by a mediocre author who thrives on the ignorance of the quasi-intellectual reader.

Sorry to say it, but if you want to read a decent, intelligent book, turn to Hermans, Bordewijk, Nooteboom or Brouwers. Not Mulisch.

Jaren geleden las ik dit boek al, en toen vond ik het best goed en onderhoudend. Nu heb ik het herlezen, en verdorie, nu vind ik het gewoon GEWELDIG en misschien wel Mulisch' allerbeste. Nu begrijp ik pas waarom veel mensen dit Mulisch' magnum opus vinden. Het boek is nu voor mij veel rijker dan de eerste keer, misschien omdat ik inmiddels een hele kilo Mulisch gelezen heb en hem dus beter snap. Ik heb die eerste keer echt allerlei dingen niet meegekregen die ik nu wel meekreeg. Daarnaast had ik ook wel baat bij het rommelige maar informatieve boekje Harry Mulisch ontdekt van Frans de Rover, dat mij dingen liet zien die ik ook bij herlezing had gemist, en bij de vierdelige recensie van Carel Peeters (op internet).

Het boek buitelt van ingewikkelde en rijke bespiegelingen over de theologie, astronomie, hieroglyphen, alchemie, muziek, architectuur en kunst. Die bespiegelingen zijn soms redelijk duizelingwekkend en (voor mij) onnavolgbaar, maar ook fascinerend en soms zelfs ontroerend. Ik ben behoorlijk agnostisch, maar ik snap de schoonheid en verlokking die uitgaat van het motief van het aloude geloof in de 'muziek der sferen' of de 'oerharmonie van het heelal'. Zeker zoals Mulisch het opschrijft. Ik ben een totale alfa, maar ik snap de fascinatie van natuurwetenschappers voor de oerknal en voor alles wat te maken heeft met het ontstaan van ons heelal. Zoals ik ook de fascinatie begrijp voor de oneindigheid van het heelal, voor sterrenlicht dat miljoenen lichtjaren erover doet om ons te bereiken, voor zwarte gaten, enzovoort enzovoort. Zeker zoals Mulisch het opschrijft. En dus raakte ik helemaal verslingerd aan Quintens peilloze dromen over b.v. fantastische, door het goddelijke of het onbewuste ingeblazen architectuur, met eindeloze gangen en trappen die de wetten van de zwaartekracht tarten. Onmogelijke architectuur eigenlijk, waarin a.h.w. een vorm gezocht wordt voor de niet te bevatten (en in die zin even 'onmogelijke') oerharmonie van het heelal. Zoals ik ook helemaal verslingerd raakte aan alle passages over onmogelijke meetkundige figuren of ondoorgrondelijke codes, en aan alle tantaliserende raadsels waarmee de personages worden geconfronteerd. Ik hou van literatuur die mijn verwondering voedt, en in De ontdekking van de hemel doet Mulisch dat op wel heel ijzersterke manier.

Het is ook nog eens een momumentaal verhaal over een vriendschap: Max Delius is een alter ego van Mulisch, Onno Quist is een evenbeeld van Mulisch' boezemvriend Jan Hein Donner, zodat dit boek ook een (ironisch) zelfportret is EN een monument voor Mulisch' gestorven vriend. En Quinten - in feite de zoon van Max en Onno, hoe paradoxaal dat ook lijken moge- is weer een aanstekelijk (vervormd) portret van de 17-jarige enthousiasteling die Mulisch tot zijn dood is gebleven: de briljante jongeling die op eigen wijze zijn weg zoek in kunst, filosofie, wetenschap en het occulte en die met jongensachtige onbevangenheid het onmogelijke najaagt. En dat leidt dan weer tot retespannende Dan Brown-achtige of Umberto Eco-achtige plotwendingen, met de verloren gewaande 'ark des verbonds' en de oorspronkelijke Stenen Tafelen (met daarop de door Mozes zelf opgeschreven tien geboden) als inzet.

Het verhaal is te ingewikkeld om na te vertellen, en bovendien zou het flauw zijn om stukken van de plot te verklappen. Maar een van de kernmotieven (dat staat al op de flaptekst, dus ik verklap niks) is dat twee engelen in feite via Quinten (en Onno, en Max) de Stenen Tafelen terug willen krijgen, omdat zij het verbond met de mensheid willen opzeggen. Dit omdat de mensheid (volgens de engelen) alle moraal heeft verloren en omdat de mens helemaal is gedomineerd door de techniek en daardoor zijn ziel verloren heeft. Die nogal pessimistische visie doordesemt ook het verhaalverloop: bijvoorbeeld in de bespiegelingen van Max over Auschwitz (de plek waar zijn moeder is vergast, de plek ook die samen met andere voor Max cruciale plaatsen een raadselachtige geometrische figuur laat zien), in het verraad dat de vriendschap tussen Max en Onno aantast, in Onno's wanhoop over alom groeiende onverschilligheid en vandalisme, en in andere details. Zoals bekend (kijk er o.a. Voer voor psychologen maar op na) dacht Mulisch zelf ook echt dat de mens door de techniek zijn ziel en persoonlijkheid verloren had en dat de wereld daaraan ten onder zou gaan. En die gedachte klinkt duidelijk door in allerlei uitspraken in De ontdekking van de hemel, met name uitsparen over techniek als een 'pact met de duivel'. Zoals ook Mulisch' gedachten over WO II doorklinken in de bespiegelingen van Max over het kwaad in de wereld, het raadsel van Auschwitz, het kwellende vermoeden dat het hele universum een zwart gapend gat is van totale zinloosheid. Dat, gecombineerd met allerlei dood en verdoemenis in het boek, geeft De ontdekking van de hemel een behoorlijk pessimistische toon.

Maar tegelijk is het vooral ook een boek vol uitbundige en zelfs uitzinnige verbeeldingskracht, waar je helemaal vrolijk van wordt. De vriendschap van Onno en Max is even ontroerend als hilarisch, en de jongensachtige fascinatie van Max en later Quinten voor de raadsels van het heelal is ongelofelijk aanstekelijk. Meer nog dan in andere boeken wist Mulisch mij te verbijsteren met zijn jongensachtig enthousiaste invallen over occultisme, alchemie en wetenschap. Alleen Mulisch kan zoiets bedenken als de 'historioscoop': een telescoop die de weerkaatsing opvangt van gebeurtenissen van eeuwen geleden. Onmogelijk, onvoorstelbaar en fantastisch, maar was de TV dat in 1800 niet ook? Prachtig is ook hoe Quinten opgroeit in een situatie die aan alle vastgeroeste conventies ontsnapt: met twee vaders (die allebei tegelijk wel en niet zijn vader zijn), met een afwezige moeder die juist door haar (op zichzelf trieste) afwezigheid sterker aanwezig is en ook een verstild en krachtig symbool is van oercreativiteit, en met een grootmoeder die (zonder dat Quinten het weet) tegen middernacht verandert in een seksueel bezeten furie. Een totaal andere setting dus dan de 'normale' familie, en juist daardoor kan Quintens uitzonderlijkheid zich ten volle ontplooien. Zo'n motief vind ik dan uitermate inspirerend en optimistisch. Net als het einde van het boek, waarin Quinten (als ik het goed heb begrepen) weer helemaal vervloeit met de oercreativiteit waaruit hij is voortgekomen. Mulisch zelf was bovendien geen pure pessimist: hij vreesde weliswaar de zielloosheid ten gevolge van de techniek, en werd zeer gekweld door het vraagstuk van het kwaad in de wereld, maar hij dacht ook dat kunst en verbeeldingskracht nog enige hoop op redding boden. En ook dat blijkt duidelijk in dit boek: het is immers ondanks al zijn pessimisme ook een jubelende ode aan de verbeeldingskracht, en een bruisende demonstratie van Mulisch' talent om het raadsel van de wereld nog vele malen te vergroten en te verrijken.

Prachtig boek kortom, dus ik ben blij dat ik het heb herlezen. En dat zal ik in de toekomst vast nog vaker doen!

What a magnificent book! Despite the hubris of Mulisch in incorporating large swatches of his autobiography into the fabric of this literary counterpane, he uses those elements well to contribute to the coherent pattern of the work. This is a novel of ideas, which is also an engaging narrative filled with humor. For those readers willing to work their way through the 730 pages, the reward will be worth the time spent, and the time spent will be the reward. The book provides devastating criticisms of religion, politics, and the to-hell-in-a-handbasket trajectory of humanity. It also provides touching and sometimes breathtaking appreciations of the human creations of music, architecture, and science, as well as of the innately human curiosity and inventiveness which have given rise to them. The author adopts a gnostic worldview for the structure of the novel's argument, and those who are unfamiliar with the basics of gnosticism may be a bit confused, but it works rather well (even with the somewhat heavy-handed dialogues in heaven). There is, of course, always the danger that when a writer uses religiomythological elements metaphorically his intent will be misunderstood by those still limited by a superstitious worldview. Finally, not since Gilgamesh has there been a more heartfelt description of that most elusive, difficult, and yet rewarding of human relationships -- true friendship.

A ripping yarn of a novel. The story revolves around Max and Onno, two Dutch men who meet in the 60s, become friends, and later become entwined in a love triangle with a woman called Ada. The book develops over decades, across the 70s and 80s, and deals with philosophical and religious themes.

I loved the first half of the book; watching the highly intelligent and charismatic Max interact with the cultured and dry witted Onno was wonderful. Their relationship was a delight and seeing them spar was enormously entertaining. So entertaining, in fact, that I completely ignored the chapters where two angels discuss the events of the book (a thing that I found irritating and vacuous). But sadly, by the hallway point, I was done. After that, the book speeds up so that we can watch Quentin (the son of both men) grow up as fast as possible (he has absolutely no life nor hinterland because of this), and become the chosen one or something. I just didn't care by this point. By the final third, I was literally skim reading so that I could get to the end (which builds to a climactic denouement that both fizzles out and wasn't worth it).

The writing's great. But the novel meanders off a cliff into an unconvincing religious epiphany that might appeal to believers out there but simply rang hollow and seemed silly to me. That all being said, if plot driven novels or books that toy with a sense of the profound (especially in the religious sense) are your thing, then I would definitely recommend it. The book is clearly very good. It just happens to combine the two things I don't really care for in literature: third person plot driven narratives and chattering angels (the fact that the book began with them was a big concern although it did get much better).

The book was very easy to read but you're quickly invested in the two men (that part of the book is superb) so the moment it stops being about them, Mulisch slightly loses the impetus. He obviously has a bigger story to tell but it wasn't one I was interested in. Had the book simply ended with Max and Onno going to the movies that would have been fine with me. But instead we get comas, meteorites, concentration camps, murder, communism, the ten commandments, Francis Bacon. Oh and those boring angels again.

I dunno. This just isn't my thing.

Suintrigavo mane šįkart skambūs pažadai: intelektualus, geriausias olandiškas kūrinys ir pan. Kadangi knygą išleido Alma littera, tai visai patikėjau. „Dangaus atradimas“ – tai pasakojimas apie du vyrus. Jie skirtingi tiek, kiek tikriausiai gali nunešti jūsų vaizduotė. Vienas monogamiškų santykių šalininkas, kitas visiškas mergišius ir tuos skirtumus būtų galima vardinti nesustojant, bet esmę, manau, supratot. Šie du vyrai tampa neišskiriamais draugais. Netrukus į pasakojimą įvedama moteris. Kaip gi be jos??? Ji tampa lemtinga jų abiejų gyvenimams.

Šis pasakojimas turi gana didelę ambiciją – aprėpti jei ne visas, tai bent jau daugybę temų: religija, draugystė, lemtis, karas, holokaustas ir t.t. Nemažai filosofinių išvedžiojimų. Bet iškart perspėju – tai nėra tas kūrinys, kurį skaitysite kančios perkreiptu veidu. Oi ne 😊 Greičiau su didžiuliu pasimėgavimu. Istorija įtraukia ir intriguoja.

Kiek teko pastebėti, ši knyga vertinama dvejopai: arba labai gerai arba labai blogai. Viduriukas retas svečias. Vieni svaigsta nuo to, kiek daug ir kokio gylio ši knyga savyje talpina, kiti piktinasi, kad autoriaus ambicijos buvo per didelės, per daug bandyta apžioti, forma pretenzinga ir apskritai gana pamaiviškas tas išprusimo demonstravimas. Aš būčiau labiau tų pamėgusių šią knygą stovykloje. Man tie nepasitenkinimo šūksniai signalizuoja labiau apie ego dalykus. Paaiškinu, ką turiu galvoje. Atvirai pasakau – suprasti visų šiame kūrinyje aprašomų dalykų man nepavyko. Knyga reikalauja intelektualaus skaitytojo ir nemažai žinių. Tai tas nesupratimas visko iki galo gal kai kuriuos užgauna.

Humoras reikalauja atskiros pastraipos ir paminėjimo. Čia nebus viskas už jus sukramtyta. Vėl gi gal ne viską suprasite, bet jei jau pagausite apie ką, tai bus saldu.. Labai saldu. Tos sarkazmo, ironijos gaidelės įpintos labai išmaniai bei skoningai.

Tai pasakojimas apie gyvenimą. Jei sukonkretinant – apie draugystę, išdavystę, pareigą, atsakomybę. Kad būtų paprasčiau įsivaizduoti kokia yra ši knyga, pasakysiu taip – pirmoji dalis savo susikaupimu, intelektualumu bei maniera labai priminė Jaume Cabre „Prisipažįstu“, o štai antroji – „Da Vinčio kodą“ ir tikrai ne gerąja prasme.

Apimtis nemaža. Kartais tikrai norėjosi mažiau ištęstumo, konkretumo ir tas pamokslaujantis tonas per kelis puslapius nedžiugino. Jautėsi ir noras šiek tiek pasimaivyti savo išprusimu. Kai kurie pamąstymai organiškai nebeįsipindavo į vientisą visumą.

Kliuvo ir moterų portretai. Jos šiame romane vaidina svarbią rolę, bet dėmesio joms skirta švelniai tariant mažokai. O gaila, nes jos intrigavo ir norėjosi išsamesnio išpildymo.
Kam skaityti? Knyga skirta rimtesnių kūrinių mėgėjams. Jei mėgaujatės intelektualiu, giliu ir sodriu pasakojimu, šis kūrinys kaip tik jums. Gero skaitymo.

Als je zegt dat je een boek van Mulisch leest, krijg je vaak een opmerking over de persoon Mulisch: 'echt een arrogante kwal is dat', 'een heus elitekechje'. Oké dat kechje misschien niet, maar je snapt 'm. Ik denk echter dat je wel zelfverzekerd-plus mag zijn als er zo'n roman uit je vingertjes komt. Alles in het verhaal klopt: setting, personages, motieven, de hele rambam. Alledaagse dingen evenals grootse ideeën vloeien naadloos in elkaar over. En alhoewel het een dikke pil is, leest het als een trein. Vergeet al die nutteloze romannetjes en keer je om naar De Grote Drie, want daar gebeurt het. Ja, dit is sentimenteel geëtter. Ja, ik dweep met de voorbije tijd. Maar er is nog zoveel moois te lezen. Dus nietsnutten, die aan de poorten van ons land staan te rammelen, stop met schrijven en begin te lezen!

Verplichte en verbazingwekkende literatuur, maar laatste deel voelt als een combinatie van de Wereld van Sofie en een slechte Dan Brown roman (naar keuze, ik heb er helaas een viertal gelezen als kind), met wat intellectuele zever doorgemengd. Eerste helft vond ik wel heel, heel mooi. Voor het overige heb ik niet het gevoel dat ik hier een mening over moet vormen (of zelfs mag hebben, als diehard Reve en Hermans-fan). Next

Max: “De mens was niet voor zijn plezier op de wereld - er moest geneukt worden.”

Vriendschapsroman is nochtans verfrissend. “Vreselijk lot moet dat zijn, jou niet te kennen. - De gedachte alleen al lijkt mij ondragelijk. - Ik heb ook heel lang in die hel geleefd.” <3

Ik weet niet goed hoeveel humor / ironie er zit in de uitspraken van Mulisch over vrouwen / man-vrouw-relaties, zowel in zijn boeken als in zijn interviews, maar ik ben er niet zo voor te vinden.

من الروايات كل ما أحاول أكتب ريفيو عنها، لا أجد كلمات توصفها وتركتها فترة طويلة رغم أني انتهيت من قرأتها من شهور، اسمها على مسمى، هي فعلا اكتشاف السماء، ممتعو ومتبحرة في الفن والسياسة والتاريخ، بتطوف بين بلاد مختلفة من المكسيك لإيطاليا، حبيتها، لا تكفي قراءة واحدة لها أبدا، قرأتها على أبجد وأتمنى يوما ما تكون بصحبتي ورقيا واحتفظ بها لدي. ♥️🌸

Gelukt! Na meer dan 10j ongelezen in de boekenkast te staan heb ik deze klepper dankzij de verbeelding bookclub eindelijk uitgelezen. Geen idee waarom ik zo'n schrik had om er aan te beginnen. Het leest veel vlotter dan verwacht, de vriendschap tussen Onno en Max vind ik heel mooi beschreven, geweldige dialogen vol kwinkslagen en doordenkers, maar ook hun houding naar de andere personages toe wordt goed uitgewerkt. Er staan prachtige zinnen in het boek en heel interessante filosofische beschouwingen. Ik heb zin gekregen om een cursus kunstgeschiedenis/architectuur te volgen om daarna op citytrip te gaan naar Venetië, Rome, Jeruzalem!
Ja, Mulisch wil uitpakken met heel veel kennis, soms is het erover, maar het verhaal was bij momenten zeker spannend en meeslepend en ik wou echt weten hoe het verhaal verder ging evolueren. Maar... naar het einde toe werd er toch teveel uitgesponnen en naar mijn gevoel zelfs veel herhaald. En wat ik nu echt van het einde denk... daar ben ik nog niet uit.
Sowieso 4 sterren, een aanrader!

The worst part is that I was really, really enjoying this book. It was well-translated and engaging despite all the pretentious banter (which usually steers me 100 million miles from any novel. Literary masturbation is not my style), but Mulisch's toxic attitudes toward women are painfully apparent almost immediately and do not cease.

I have a three strikes rule when it comes to misogyny in literature, and it only took about 70 pages (out of 500+) before this one went on my donation shelf. A pity.

Na jaren te hebben bedacht om hier een keer aan te beginnen, nu eindelijk ook echt begonnen. En het viel me echt alles mee.

Het begin vond ik erg vlot gaan met de bijzondere vriendschap tussen Onno en Max, en de bijzondere intermezzo's waren aangenaam lezen. Na een lees dipje waarin het iets te veel ging over natuurkundige wetenschap, daarna in 1 ruk uitgelezen.

Echt wel een aanrader om eens te lezen!

Goed: driehoek/vierkant Max-Onno-Ada-Sophia, een aantal van de psychologische / filosofische gesprekken (vooral dan die over het zijn/niet zijn), het aanwakkeren van mijn goesting om nog wat extra gebouwen in Rome te gaan bezoeken.
Niet goed: iets teveel name-dropping (ok ja, het kan interessant om vb. die discus van Phaistos te vermelden voor mensen die die niet kennen, maar leg het dan uit en doe er iets mee i.p.v. het gewoon x keer te vermelden), teveel deus ex machina momenten.
Dubbel gevoel: het einde. Op zich tof als je op zoek bent naar iets à la de Da Vinci Code (dat ik indertijd wel plezant vond om te lezen), anti-climax als je iets "groots" of "diepgaand" verwacht. En eerlijk, bij wat omschreven wordt als een "magnum opus" van een schrijver, had ik dat toch wel verwacht ja.
Geen slecht boek dus, maar een van dé klassiekers van de Nederlandse taal, mja, kweetni...
