Personal reaction: This book wasn't that interesting for me since I'm not a child, but it was educational. What I liked about this book is that it included information not only about humans, but animals too.
Use in the classroom:
1. Read aloud for curricular connection:This could be read aloud if necessary, but it wouldn't be my first choice. If you were going to read it aloud, it would need to be for a very young audience, such as preschoolers.
2. Independent reading: This book is much better for independent reading. I think you could provide students with a collection of books about teeth for dental health month! This book would be great for that! Most first graders could read this book on their own.
3. Nonfiction conventions:This book has an index. It also has a section called "words you know" with pictures and captions of important words used in the book. I really liked that they put the pictures with the words so kids could easily figure them out if they didn't know them. I also liked that it used the phrasing "words you know" because it shows children what they have learned!
This book is included because it is part of the district-wide reading program curriculum. It is full of facts for early readers and describes the different features of teeth. It showcases both animals and people in many different examples and is paired with vivid photographs on most pages, (Fowler, 1999). It is geared for comprehension and developing strategies for comprehension and marked by School District ISD 271 at a grade level 1. This text is a read-aloud to the class. It is meant to introduce the elements of nonfiction text in an engaging way (that also happens to tie into a health unit).
