Excellent book; I misunderstood that it was an account of the life of a transplant surgeon. Probably the best I've read in 10+ years, although take that with a grain of salt as this is the first transplant-related book I've read since my own surgery. Recommended to my by a liver transplant peer mentor who did not err.
Oh my goodness, what an awesome read. So much life, so much knowledge, so many terms i have never heard before. I loved it! It is long but it allows you to seep into their world and also teaches you to appreciate the abundance of life here! I cannot say more, just take the time to read it or listen to it..
"Cutting for Stone" is listed as the #1 Book Club read by Boise's independent book seller. Though the beginning was slow, after reading through the first few chapters, I couldn't put down Verghese's novel! Abraham Veghese did a great job describing the characters who live in hospital compounds in Ethiopia (Missing hospital), New York & Boston. Twins Marion and Shiva are born to a nun who dies in childbirth. Their father, Thomas Stone-a British surgeon, flees Ethiopia after her death. The twins are raised by an Indian couple- Hema, the doctor who delivered them and her husband, Gosh, who becomes Missing's surgeon after the disappearance of Stone. The novel includes several graphic medical procedures and Ethiopian history (though dates are changed). There's lots of 'meat' in this novel. Set aside some reading time- it's 550+ pages!
I really enjoyed this book. I was invested in the characters and wanted to know their story. I have always enjoyed medical science, so I found the that part of the story interesting. I couldn't put the book down during the last 10 chapters. If you must have a happy ending, you may want to skip this book. However, I felt the ending was satisfying and wrapped up the story nicely.
This is the best book I read in 2010. I loved the depth of the characters. IT was a great story! I liked learning about Ethiopia. And the Doctor had a perspective I could really relate to.
