good read. although, i really don't know what the back is on about as it never really tells you when the two men are picked up in yunan and it finishes as just one fella surviving.

i really felt this one. its always a bit emotional to read about what these guys went through - imagine fighting malaria, dysentry, gangrene, missing sight because an eye has been gauged out and a finger shot off + not sleeping in a bed or having a proper meal in NINE months, as well as trying your best to not succumb to delusion and sheer exhaustion.

an excerpt -

The truck pulled up outside a bazaar, and as I walked away I caught a glimpse of myself in the coloured mirrors behind the bazaar stalls. There I saw, not the man I knew, but a ragged scarecrow, half his face covered in scars and blood-clots, his clothes ragged and torn. Only by a leather belt, water-sodden and torn, could one see I was a soldier and not a tramp.

that made me tear up a bit. its so hard to imagine what these guys went through out there, losing all of their mates around them as they struggle.
