A selection of writings by women from Ireland, Australia, England, Canada and other countries. This book sets out to show that whether Irish or of Irish descent, they balance ancient history, myth and legend with the fragility and tenuousness of contemporary society.
Glad I read this because it's introduced to me a few writers I might never have heard of. Outside of Ireland, many of these writers (all with Irish roots) come from/live in Australia and New Zealand. There are only 2 or 3 represented from North America. I liked hearing the perspective of women representing other parts of the Irish disapora than the U.S.
Standouts: Francesca Rendle-Short's piece "Loop the Loop" was excellent. So was Helena Mulkerns' "Famine Fever." Also really liked selections by Rita Ann Higgins, Medbh McGuckian, Pam Lewis, Cherry Smyth, Bub Bridger, Nuala Archer, Linda Anderson, and Siobhan McHugh.
Wonderful collection of fiction, poetry and autobiographical writing by Irish women, established authors and others. Even though I am not in any way remotely Irish - though my ancestoral roots are celtic in this life I am Australian - the heart of the pleasure and the powerful connection I felt from and with this collection was because it was written by a large range of women. Different roots, experiences I could respond to rather than simply observe.
