The Freelancers #1

The Freelancers: The Translator

Rate this book
Tyler Dewar is branching out: leaving the office drones behind, breaking international laws, raising hell with a motley crew of diplomatic misfits and an old boyfriend or two. All to find information on a notorious criminal cartel that no one in power is interested in bringing to justice.

Unfortunately for Tyler good intentions don't negate bad judgement. The CIA is pissed, the FBI is pissed, the Russians want him dead. Can Tyler get himself and the people he cares about out of trouble before trouble crushes him like a bug?

Even though I love this author's work, I don't like this particular story, purely because of the setting.

I just don't get into FBI/CIA/Mob stories, unless the organisation is purely incidental to the plot (this usually means some cute young twink is being held captive/set up/used as bait by them). Proof = I am the only only the second person in the universe (along with Kate)who DNFd Mann of My Dreams aka Houseboat on the Nile (but I loved the followup about the rent boys who interact with the MCs from Mann of my Dreams).

So, this wasn't me. But I could read The Condor all day long, and twice on Sundays.

Not even kidding. Tyler Dewar is my new action-hero!

Russian Mafia, CIA, FBI, disassembled KGB - now FSB, GRU, SVR. The hell if I know, but a mad-cap twisted, tangled, broiling, confusing, zig when you think zag, cross your eyes then close them, ADVENTURE!

So we have Tyler, CIA, the worst spy in the world.
Dmitry, Sanshan and Sasha - FSB, sorta', maybe.
Yuri, smoking a cigarette, what the hell is Yuri? Who cares, he loves Tyler and he's badass.
Oh there are more too! None of them are psychic, or have super-spy-powers, except Sasha the super sniper but that is plausible. What I mean is, they bumble, get lucky, work with misinformation, get smart, get beat the fuck up, raped, kidnapped, detained, arrested, flirt, and yup - fall in love! *awwws*
Ha!

There are serious scenes and serious theme's too, not all fun and games. The HEA... who said anything about HEA!? They're still looking for the body for goodness sake, and
Now, I'm off to see what happens next in The Dressing!

James Bondovitch McSpiesalot? Priceless!

This reminded me a lot of The Archer by Abigail Roux with far less sex and with just as mean of an ending. ;)

I'm off to find The Dressing and wait somewhat patiently for more Freelancers.

DNF at 25%. Isa K.'s writing is clever as always, but the plot and characters in this novel did not draw me in.
