It is painful at times to read this futuristic-ish book almost 30 years after its publication in 1996. The main character’s struggles as an adult with his computer “addiction” (he likes to build and explore VR) seem quaint compared to the horrific effects of social media on teenagers today, in 2025. Our modern-day, depression-inducing, media-infused, influencer rat-race is a darker place than the GlobeNet Scott’s “Patriot” killer inhabits.

The character development in “virtually elimin@ted” is thin. The plot doesn’t have any major twists. The minor twists resolve too conveniently. The main character doesn’t face any real crisis of faith, making the Christianity sprinkled here and there (a few Biblical quotes and occasional prayer) superficial. What evangelical quotes the Bible without citing the verse? A more interesting portrayal of evangelical Christianity might imagine the ubiquity of Ethan Hamilton’s faith as its own kind of blind spot and his granting of unrestricted GlobeNet access to his son as having irreversible consequences. No dice.

I might have given this book a 1-star rating except that I actually managed to finish it.
