I pilfered this delightful gem from my father's library of previous hobbies! During my undergraduate study in Fine Art photo, I found this text much better organized and thorough in the area of film lab photography. More recent publications tend to focus on digital photography - this text is a great resource for those of us who still prefer "the hard way!"
The Amateur Photographer's Handbook is one of my favorite guides to photography, and for me was probably the most influential. I learned a lot from that book, checked out from our local library, as a kid. No internet back then (1960's) for me to learn about cameras. I have the 4th (1952) and the 8th (1973) editions.
I find this to be a really great reference book. Each time I pick it up, I learn something new! Nice explanations of technical details; I'm finding the chapter on focal length to be really helpful at the moment, but I always find this book useful.

An instructional guide on photography written before the days of digital. It does cover composition and other basics that can be helpful for the amateur.
