This is Va Pu's first and the foremost novel, it was felicitated by Maharashtra State Award. Babi, the heroine of the novel presents the hardest philosophy of life in simplest yet the most effective way. This is a very cherishable experience. Everyone of us must go through it. The subject of this novel is not a new one, it is much tried earlier by many authors, yet the novelty lies in the presentation. Va Pu has given a perfect justice to the subject. This novel starts as a love story where both the hero and heroine cross the limits and experience ecstasy before marriage. Later on events take place in such a manner that she gives birth to their child without his support and further raises the child, when he refuses to accept the child and to marry her she pulls on all by herself. This is the story of her struggle and more than that the truth that she faces alone, with courage, without bothering for the so called recognised norms of the society. She gets support from a few like her, who respect the truth more than anything. She raises her child keeping faith only on the truth, but what is her future? What is the future of her child? What does she achieve at the end? The answers to all these questions are woven beautifully along with the philosophy of life and the nakedness of human minds. As the title suggests, we come to the conclusion that after all everyone is alone in this universe. We come alone, we leave alone, still during our stay over here we try to console our mind with some company, isn't it?

धाडसी आणि सुंदर पुस्तक आहे. न predict करता वाचलं तरच लेखकाची शैली एन्जॉय करता येईल.

काय होईल पुढे, शेखर भेटेल का? कसा react होईल, वगैरे वगैरे.. सस्पेन्स मस्त maintain केला आहे.. खरंच बाबी सारखं जगता येऊ शकतं का? बहुतेक नाही.

वपुंचं पुस्तक वाचन म्हणजे कायमच एक पर्वणी असते. मला काही सांगायचं आहे पण मला शब्दच सापडत नाहीत आणि हे न सापडलेले शब्द म्हणजे व.पु.काळे यांचे लेखन. वपुंची प्रत्येक कलाकृती वाचताना याचा प्रत्यय येतो. खरंतर वपुंनी कथेच्या तुलनेत कादंबरी कमी लिहिल्या. त्या काही कादंबरींमधील त्यांची पहिली आणि गाजलेली कादंबरी म्हणजे 'ही वाट एकटीची'.
खरंतर पुस्तकाचं शीर्षक वाचून आपण अंदाज लावू शकतो की ही एका स्त्री जीवनाची कहाणी आहे; पण ही केवळ एका स्त्री जीवनाची गोष्ट नसून इथल्या पुरूषप्रधान समाजाच्या विरोध्दात बंड करणाऱ्या स्त्रीची गोष्ट आहे.

लग्नाआधी मूल' ही समाजमान्य नसलेली संकल्पना ह्या कादंबरीचा मूळ विषय. ही संपूर्ण कथा ह्याच विषयावर बोलणारी आणि समाज ह्या गोष्टींकडे कसा बघतो हे सांगणारी आहे. एखाद्या प्रियसीच आपल्या प्रियकराविना जगणं, एखाद्या मुलाचं आपल्या वडिलांविना जगणं, जगण्याची फरफट, त्या फरफटीत वेदना निर्माण करणारी माणसं याच वर्णन वपुंनी उत्तर प्रकारे चितारले आहे. कादंबरीतील प्रत्येक पात्र समाजातील प्रत्येक वृत्तीचा प्रतिनिधित्व करताना आपल्याला दिसून येतं.

'बाबी', म्हणजेच वपुंच्या लेखणीतून जन्माला आलेली कादंबरीची नायिका.‌ जीवनविषयक एक कठोर तत्वज्ञान परखडपणे `बाबी` या नायिकेच्या माध्यमातून मांडले आहे. खरंतर बाबी ही तुमच्या माझ्यासारखीच एक सामान्य पण तरी ती एक वेगळं रसायन वाटते.  तिचे अवलोकन करणारा वाचक तिच्यात विरघळून जातो.
बाबी ही त्या सर्व स्त्रियांचं प्रतिनिधित्व करते ज्या समाजाची कसली भीडभाड न राखता आपला स्वाभिमान जपत जगणं जगतात. खरंतर बाबी सारखं जगणं म्हणजे सूर्याचं तळपणं आहे. बाबी सत्याला कवटाळणारी, स्वतःची तत्त्व पाळणारी, ठाम, निर्धारी, सतत येणाऱ्या संकटांना स्वावलंबीपणे तोंड देणारी,आपल्याला आपल्या वर्तुळाबाहेर जाऊन विचार करायला ती भाग पाडणारी,  पण तरीही साधी, सोपी आणि सरळ आहे.
आपल्या सोबत राहून प्रत्येक क्षणातील सौरभ गोळा करण्याचा विचार ती आपल्याला देते आणि म्हणूनच ती वाचकाला आपलीशी वाटते असं मला वाटतं.

गोष्टीतील अनेक चढउतार आणि व.पुं ची लेखन किमया वाचकाला कादंबरीत शेवटपर्यंत खिळवून ठेवते. बघायला गेलं तर कादंबरी छोटी, त्यातील गोष्टही छोटीच. पण मोठी आहे ती या कादंबरीतील विचारगंगा.  अशी ही सत्य आणि वास्तव याचे भान ठेवून समाजाला अचूक संदेश देणारी कादंबरी आपण सर्वांनी ही वाचावी हेच आत्मनिवेदन.

I must say this is the most inspiring story of an amazing girl called Babi, who stands up for the truth at all times, walks away from cowardice of her own family and even her lover who shamelessly refuses to marry her after getting her pregnant. She raises her child entirely on her own. What Babi, a single mother, faces in the orthodox old fashioned pompous male dominated society, and how she struggles at all times for standing firm with her beliefs in truth is an inspiring experience in itself. Idealistic people often suffer in the society, which isn’t anything new, nonetheless the way VaPu Kale has illustrated it is truly incredible. Babi never compromises her dignity and self-respect, and walks her path all alone (whence comes the title “Hi Vat Ekatichi.”) VaPu mentions that Babi’s actual name is Vidya, which is short for Vidyullata, the divine Lightning that dances fearlessly in the sky with her free will, illuminating the Universe. Does Babi win her battles with her determination and strength? Or does the male-dominated traditional Indian society succeed in suppressing her will to stand up for truth and her self-respect? It’s worth reading in VaPu Kale’s one of the best creations.
On a somewhat personal note, this is the book that had made great impressions on my mind during my early youth. It made me realize, and firmly believe that no matter whether you have to walk alone all your life (as almost everyone does), you still must follow the path of truth at all times. Only Truth can set you free, and only Truth liberates you.
The most positive message I learn from Babi’s life is that no person and no relationship are worth compromising your dignity and self-respect.
Hats off to VaPu Kale for creating such a masterpiece.
