The Calling is what I think of as paranormal light. There are paranormal characters, but they are not fighting an evil nemesis or trying to save the world. They are living an everyday life just as any other human being would. Justin has chosen a career in the Coast Guard where he can sometimes secretively use his abilities to command the seas to save the lives of others. That is in fact where this journey begins. Justin is saving a father and son from a ship sinking due to a storm. The hanging on the edge of your seat action and suspense begins and readers are thrown into a book that can’t be put down until they journey through the very climatic ending. This is a non-stop page turner.

Mandy is in the midst of bringing some normal back into her life. She has recently lost a breast to cancer and her self-esteem to an ex who dumped her when life got too real for him to handle. (That’s right him to handle, selfish man all readers will love to hate.) She is bringing herself back from a horrific illness. She’s went back to the nursing job that she loves, she’s begun spending time with the friends that stayed with her during her illness. She still has many doubts about what life has in store for her. Then a chance encounter with her ex’s best friend (Justin) gives her something to look forward to. He’s invited her to spend the day hanging out with him on the beach. It’s something they have done many times before, but this time Justin doesn’t have to hide his attraction.

The Calling has just become the best book that I have read this year. Without a doubt I can easily see myself raving about this book to every book lover I come into contact with for a long time to come! My husband would pass me while I was reading The Calling and stop to ask what I was smiling about. You can’t help but smile while reading this book. It’s not a comedy, but it makes you feel all warm and fuzzy inside, a real feel good book. Justin and Mandy are absolutely AMAZING characters. Readers are in store for an emotional roller coaster. I do not think there is a single emotion that the reader does not experience at some point. Mandy and Justin do not have an easy relationship. They have many trials that they must face in the developing and strengthening of their relationship. After reading the greatest epilogue ever I turned off my Kindle looked down at it and sighed “wow.”

Favorite quote from Mandy: “If you don’t stop, I’ll have a heart attack. If you do stop, I’ll spontaneously combust. Your choice.” Wow, to have a man make you feel that!

Favorite quote from Justin: (one shows his passion for Mandy, one shows his joyful personality)
“You have the part of my heart that I’m missing.”
“Oh, your big ass is at the top of my list, too. In fact, we need to order dessert because some of your jiggles disappeared in the last year.”

Ashley has a very well written book and she does a good job in telling her story. But I have to admit I was looking for something a little different. This is a story about a woman who has had breast cancer and meets a demigod. The thing is you read about Mandy’s drama with her ex and her cancer and you don’t get to know about the paranormal aspects of the story until almost the middle of the book and it’s very light on the paranormal.

I liked Mandy but she was so hung up on her ex that she almost missed someone special in her life and I couldn’t figure it out for the likes of me why. The dead beat ex dumps her when she is in need of someone, he tires to sabotage her new relationship and even tires to kill her but yet she still can’t get past him. WAHTEVER! LOL. This is just a few things the ex does. Yep, there’s more.

Justin I did really like, I also enjoyed how the author went about his story and bringing his dad back to him.

I read PNR to get away from everyday life’s drama and this one brings you into it. So that's the biggest reason I couldn’t get it into this story.

You get a good drama roll between the characters and some great sex. Just don’t expect some kind of huge paranormal roll like most RNR book because this is a light paranormal romance. I do suggest if you like some of the aspects of the book please do give try it.

What's the first image that pops into my mind now that I read the book?

Gorilla Silverback fight Pictures, Images and Photos

Yes, that's the one! Two alpha males having the fight of their lives.
On the left we have Ty (and I will quote the author on this) the prick or the selfish bastard. On the right we have Justin who obviously has certain advantages over Ty, among which the fact that he is the gifted one and can manipulate waves.
So what are they fighting for? A FEMALE!
And in this story that would be Mandy. She's went through lot in her life..a mastectomy a year ago and a terrible break up. Yeah, that monkey on the left, Ty, dumped her soon after finding out Mandy had a breast cancer. What an idiot!
But Justin is something different. He is protective, yet has deep and sincere emotions for Mandy, the only problem being there is the fact he is Ty's friend.
I really enjoyed reading this book. Didn't get me sucked in from the very begging though, because I really think the author went into much details explaining the day Justin saved the kid from drowning. But as the story evolved I found it very interesting and captivating. Some might think that the story deserved more paranormal elements to it, but I loved it the way it is. I admire Mandy and found Justin very, very cute.
The book also includes some hot, spicy scenes, but I wouldn't go that far in including it in the erotica genre. Yet, they did make me blush one several occasions, but on the other hand the author sure described well the passion between Mandy and Justin. I could feel the "electricity" even through my reader.
Overall, I think the author did a great job and knowing this is her debut I bet her books are going to get just better in the future. I sure hope to read more from Ashley.

Absolutely Beautiful!

Wow, mythology lovers will love this story about Triton’s Legacy being passed down throughout the generations. This story was woven beautifully with passion, love, pain, jealousy, betrayal, death, and suspense. I felt like I was literally watching a movie as the smooth written words had me sitting on the edge of my seat from all the drama, action, and suspense.

The interaction between the characters and their emotions were captured and brought to life beautifully in this story. With Mandy dealing with breast cancer recovery, a jealous ex-boyfriend, and Justin dealing with his ill-fated mother in an institution due to the death of his sister and to top it off, Justin’s learns his gifted powers are more powerful and dangerous than he ever imagined, the story constantly keeps your interest glued to the pages as it awaits the major climax from the plot.

The erotic scenes were very tastefully described and were definitely medium hot. However, Justin is definitely a man every woman dreams of with not just the greatest body but with the sweet and gentle words spoken and shown feelings throughout the book that will make you fall in love with him. I loved Mandy and Justin as a couple and how they fought for their love to get to their happy ever after in the end.

Great story, I look forward to reading more of Ashley Willis work

The word that comes to mind when I think about how to describe this story is "sweet." Now that doesn't mean that there are no steamy scenes. There are. Sweet just encapsulates the emotion the story evokes in me. Mandy and Justin are two likable people. A cancer survivor, Mandy has scars not just on her body but in her heart. Justin, a Coast Guard rescue swimmer, is emotionally scarred as well, but he also has a secret that he must share with the woman he loves before he can hope to build a life with her.

This is an urban fantasy romance, but not of the dark variety. The fantasy builds off mythology rather than dark, dangerous, bad-boy monsters. Even so, the heart of the story is the romance between the hero and heroine, and in that arena it plays off one of my favorite romance troupes: friends to lovers. I especially liked the ending. There's a ticking clock that they must race against. If they lose the race, Mandy loses everything that's come to mean so much to her, and I applaud the author for throwing realistic roadblocks in their way and making it appear that they can't win.

I look forward to more from Ashley Lynn Willis.

OH GOD , THIS BOOK IS SOOOOO GOOOOD !!!
I loved it right from the beginning to the end . Not a moment of disappointment at all . This book tells us the story of Mandy , who has gone through a very dreadful phase of her life battling breast cancer and being dumped by the love of her life . And Justin , a coast guard who is ever ready to risk his life to safe people battling rough weather and high rides . The story basically talks about how this two meet and gradually fall in love . Troubles comes to the lovers in the form of Ty , Mandy's ex who wants Mandy back and a secret that Justin has been harbouring deep within him that probably was the reason that shred his family into pieces .

I loved the cover of this book . It manages to give a glimpse of what the readers can expect from this book . What i really and genuiely loved about this book was that to me this story was one of a kind . The reason i say this because honest to god i hav'nt read a book that fits into the paranormal genre and talks about people with some kind of supernatural powers but does'nt talk about battling some kind of evil king lore or trying to save the world from some ' end of the world ' kind of catastrophe . But it was more like battling one's personal demons or trying to believe in someone without the slightest hint of doubt . It was about making sacrifices , it was about learning to make people a part of your life , learning to trust them . It was about love for one's family and people who matter .
The romance between Mandy and Justin was amazing .The paranormal bit was enticing too . This book is definitely worth reading . Highly recommended to readers who enjoy the Romance/angst genre .

I really enjoyed this read. The Characters are lovable and the story grabbed me right way. I was worried half way through that I was getting my happy ending too soon and the book would become monotonous but the author did a great job of keeping the story going and introducing some great antagonists.

My only constructive criticism is that for a paranormal romance book there isn't enough paranormal aspects in the story. There is great potential here though if the author decides to dive into it a bit more. I love PNR books but I can appreciate a good romance too which is why I gave it 4 stars not 3. But for PNR lovers they are going to be left wanting more of the paranormal elements.

It was also sexy without qualifying it to the erotic genera in my opinion.

Bottom line, I really enjoyed it and read it in under 24 hours because I couldn't put it down.

It's been so long since i wrote a full review i barely remember how to do it but i'll give it a shot because this book was pretty close to perfect
Heroine: I loved her despite her not being my favorite kind of heroine. She beat cancer and she forged through her fear to live a life. Like others have noted the author handles this struggle very delicately and did a great job of balancing the realistic fear and the strength that a survivor has. I didn't particularly like that she ran from the hero after the big bang (it felt a little like what her ex did to her) but I did sort of understand it.
Hero: My newest book boyfriend! He's so sweet (but not a doormat) and i've never seen a man real or fake anticipate a woman's thoughts and needs as well as he did. He also had the tortured soul thing that somehow is super sexy in books despite being kinda pathetic in real life lol.
Romance: This couple was great together. I liked that this was a second chance type of book but the author actually made it a point to have them go through growing a relationship despite them knowing each other really well already. These two were the perfect example of two halves of the same whole and i loved their relationship through the ups and the downs
Sex scenes:These were well written and fairly steamy but i personally prefer more explicit scenes. Nothing wrong with them and they weren't glossed over I guess I've just gotten used to erotica level scenes
Plot: This was an interesting take on paranormal. I guess i've never read paranormal "light" and though i see it didn't go over well with everyone and i still love my normal PNRs i really liked this as a fairly novel concept. I agree with other reviewers that the paranormal parts were a little lacking and weren't entirely necessary. However it did make it more interesting...and it wasnt really like any type of paranormal storyline i'd ever read and it was kinda cool to see someone paranormally inclined leading such a normal life.Very well paced and developed
Writing: Overall very good. Most of the good things i've already mentioned so i'll just note that there was the occasional error. Nothing horrible just a hiccup along the way of an otherwise well flowing narrative

Bottom line: definitely one i'd recommend if nothing else than for the novelty.

Right away I was excited to read this book. I’ve read a lot of PNR, and this sounded like a premise that was totally new to me. I was completely right! I loved it! Seriously, I started it Saturday morning and finished it Sunday morning – I couldn’t put it down! And just a moment here to acknowledge the cover – it’s sweet and beautiful and I love the concept that the man is made of water. I would love to see some fan art someday depicting his tattoo!

First thing, first chapter we learn just what type of strong, stand up man Justin is. And we get a hint of what’s to come. The author really made me feel like I was right there doing a Coast Guard rescue with him. I could feel the fear of the people being rescued, feel the splashing cold of the water, and the courage of our hero.

Then Mandy and Justin reunite. I like that this wasn’t a situation where they meet on day one and are forever soul mates on day two. A good fire doesn’t start with an explosion, it starts with a spark. This book definitely delivers on its promises.

There was a steady build up to the climax. No pun intended, because those steamy scenes were certainly steamy! A single event caused a whirlwind of events and it left my daughter begging me to come play hide and seek in her room that went something like this: “mommy, come play hide and seek” and I replied “OK, I will – go hide and wait for me” and I didn’t go seek! I just had to find out what was going to happen next! (Yes, I did eventually play the game with her for those that may be worried ;) )

And then this story ended with a very well written epilogue, which made me so happy. So many books just forego the epilogue altogether. I am definitely not one of those people who likes to make my own ending up.

All in all, I just want to say again that I loved this book. So click on the link, or in my sidebar and show the author some love.

This is a story that I’d love to see built into a series!

What woman wouldn't want a hero in their life? What about one who just happens to have supernatural powers? We first meet Justin in this story doing what he does best, being a hero. This very act brings him back into Mandy's life after almost a year; within that year she went through something that every woman fears: being diagnosed with breast cancer and having a mastectomy. Having her heart ripped out just before the surgery happens, Mandy has retreated from just about everything, including Justin.

One of the things I liked about this book was how soft it was. Many paranormal romances hit you fast and hard with some sort of supernatural dilemma that our hero and heroine must face together. It's during that dilemma that we see them fall in love and navigate their romance while solving the supernatural mystery or battle something "evil". With this book, we watch a friendship rekindled and blossom into a romance, with Justin's abilities being the potential obstacle in their lives. Will love conquer?

The only way to find out is to get this book when it is released to find out. You won't be disappointed. I know a story has me engrossed when I feel the pain of the characters during low points, I smile when something wonderful happens or I want to cry when something breaks the characters' hearts. With that being said, this book broke my heart, lifted me up and made me laugh. It's definitely worth the read.

My review for The Calling by Ashley Lynn Willis

I can only blame myself for the torture I put myself through while reading this. I received this book through R2R book reviews. I downloaded the book onto my Kindle, stuck my Kindle into my purse and went to drop the kids off at school. That's when I made the mistake. I had exactly 5-10mins before I needed to catch 2 buses and a train across town, over 8 cities. Instead, I pull out my Kindle and start reading.

Wow, such a mistake. I was hooked. I couldn't stop reading. My tiny 10min window vanished so fast that I was practically tearing through the streets to catch my first bus.

Long story short, every time my butt touched a chair, I had my Kindle out and pressed to my nose. Hell, half the time, I didn't even put my Kindle away. I was transfixed. I wanted... NEEDED to know what would happen next. WOULD Mandy and Justin make it? Would everything turn out at the end? It was all so great!

The only con-crit I would have, if I had one, would be the tiny lack of paranormal in the story. I would have loved to see more. But in no way does this deter from the author's talent with words and touching characters -- I especially LOVED Lori!.

Would I read from this author again? Absolutely! In fact, I hope there's a sequel.

(Warning to readers: Do NOT read while in a rush!)

All the Best,

I absolutely love this book! It does not have a huge paranormal presence in the storyline however it is there and plays a large part for two characters. This story focuses on Mandy and her struggles with cancer and moving past heartbreak. Mandy is a great character with amazing friends in this story. I love the poem in the beginning of the book ; it truly sets the book up nicely. I recommend this book yield anyone who loves a storyline with thoughtful and beautifully developed characters and a fantastic story of love.

This book encompasses a wonderful story that will make any one realize how strong love truly can be.

I loved it! Who knew that a story between a breast cancer survivor and an introverted rescue swimmer could turn out like this? Lots of drama, and a heart stopping race to the end. The blend between romance and paranormal aspects was perfect.

I also loved the poem at the beginning. Read it again after you finish the book to bask in the afterglow. Happy reading!

"I wish I'd met you first."
"Me, too, because I knew you were the one the second I laid eyes on you. And every time I saw you after that night, I was surer of it."

Mandy is a nurse who survived breast cancer, a mastectomy, and a fiancé who abandoned her when her medical issues were too much for him to handle. Just when she thinks she’s gotten a second chance at life, she’s faced with the very real possibility that her cancer has returned, and her life hangs in the balance once again. Justin is a survivor of a different sort, a Coast Guard rescue swimmer with the ability to manipulate the sea, who gives would be drowning victims a second chance.

The Calling starts off in the throes of action, with Justin in the midst of a heroic high seas rescue off the coast of Texas. Within several pages, we get our first small glimpse of Justin's powers to control the seas, when he uses his abilities to help him pull a young boy and his father from a sinking boat. The next scene brings us to Mandy at the hospital where she works, and we're immediately thrown into how she's being forced to contemplate the fact that her cancer may have come back after less than a year when she discovers a lump. When Justin sees Mandy again after his most recent successful rescue, he’s determined to break the wall she put up to keep him and everyone else out.

Through ongoing interaction between Mandy and Justin as the story continues, we find out that Justin always had a thing for Mandy, but she was out of bounds to him since she was dating his best friend, Tyler. After Tyler left Mandy when she needed him the most, Justin tried to keep in touch with her, but she was determined to cut all ties with that part of her life, and spent the next year as a hermit as she battled cancer.

Mandy is wary of Justin for a couple of reasons. One, he’s her ex fiance’s best friend—or so she still assumes—and two, she hasn’t dated anyone since she lost a breast to cancer, leaving her with scars she’s not sure she’ll ever want to reveal to any man.

Justin’s got some issues as well. He’s haunted by a supernatural incident that happened when he was ten years old that killed his infant sister, left his mother in a state of dementia, and caused his father to more or less sever all ties to his son. And he’s felt one hundred percent responsible for his sister’s death ever since.

Once Mandy and Justin finally get together, and things seem to be going exceptionally well for them, Justin’s past rears its ugly head and, at the same time, they’re both forced to deal with Mandy’s bitter ex fiance who will do everything in his power to destroy Mandy and Justin’s relationship—even if it means someone has to get hurt.

I really loved Mandy and Justin as a couple. I admired Mandy for her courageous strength in battling breast cancer and overcoming the internal and external scars of her illness. And Justin is just one of those men who every heroine looks for. He’s a little bit Alpha, a lot sexy, and has a huge heart to go along with it. I also loved Justin for the adoration and complete awe he shows toward Mandy, scars and all.

Although The Calling is labeled Paranormal Romance, paranormal junkies might find it a bit lacking in that area. I would call it more of a contemporary romance with a paranormal theme. The paranormal elements are there, and there's a cool story about the Greek god Triton and his connection to Justin's legacy, but they don't always seem to be the prime focus of the book. But since I love contemporary just as much as paranormal, it totally worked for me.

I also have to say; I enjoyed the love scenes in this book, especially the first one, which was filled with a lot of emotion that was a huge turning point for the heroine, and kind of set the tone for Justin and Mandy's whole romance. I thought it was well done.

The Calling is an emotional story that focuses a lot on the real issue of breast cancer, and what it can do to a woman. I have no clue if the author has been affected by breast cancer in real life, or if she knows someone close to her who has, but I felt very much like she knew what she was talking about. Mandy's emotions and inner dialogue about the way she deals with the outcome of living with a reconstructed breast seemed very real to me, and I thought it was handled with sensitivity and care.

Overall this book is filled with themes of redemption and overcoming life’s biggest obstacles. But it’s also a story about how love can affect those obstacles and ultimately make even the hardest bumps in life a little more bearable.

This is the first book I've read by Ashley Lynn Willis and first I would say thank you for the free copy to review.

I enjoyed her writing style and will definately keep her on my list to read any future books she writes.

So the story is about Justin and Mandy, Justin is a Coast Guard Rescue Swimmer and Mandy is trying to live life after surviving breast cancer and heartbreak. Of course you fall in love with both charecters and want them to live happy ever after. I didn't stop reading this book last night and found myself up till 4 am trying to finish it. Sex scences were great.

It is a paranormal romance book but unlike other paranormal books this is not the focus of the book. It was a great read and I gave it 4 stars, I would of given it 4.5 if available to do that.

I received an advance copy of this book for Read to Review (R2R). This is one of my first reviews so it may be a little jumbled, but I will hopefully get better! :)

So this book follows the story of Mandy and Justin. Mandy is a cancer survivor, and more than a little leery of forming new romantic entanglements. Justin is a rescue swimmer with the coast guard, with his own secret. Throughout the story there are situations that test this couples newly-forming romance.

Pros: Easy to read. The characters were well done, and kept me reading because I wanted to know what would happen next. The situations they faced were ordinary, and were made perfectly to be fodder against Justin's less than ordinary life. Mandy's reaction to Justin's big scene (not spoiling to much here) was great too. She didn't just calmly accept it, she really did freak out - that was great.

Cons: Sometimes the shift in time frame, when the story would skip ahead several weeks on months, was a bit disconcerting. Once the characters explained the shifts, it was made a bit clearer. Other than that, I can't honestly think of there being any other detractors for me with this story.

I would consider this book to be a dramatic romance with a splash of paranormal. It’s an emotional tale with action and a few twists and turns. Throughout the whole book my eyes were glued to the pages and I just could not put it down until the end.

The story begins with Justin performing a daring rescue. He is a Coast Guard Rescue Swimmer and he’s damn good at it. He also has powers to control water which he uses on occasion to aide in a rescue. The question is, will his powers or his job be the death of him?

Mandy is in a bad place after surviving breast cancer and the heartbreak of her fiancé breaking off their engagement. She is trying to piece her life back together but can she move past the emotional and physical scars long enough to find love?

It was so easy to fall in love with Mandy and Justin. I was rooting for them throughout the book!

I also love the cover. It’s very fitting to the book and the colors are gorgeous against the gray background tones!

Side Note:

-I know some readers do not enjoy reading spicy scenes so just a forewarning there are some in this book.

Wow, where do I start with this book?

Got it through my Nook, don't think it was a free book, must have been in the steal and deals section.

so, it had everything, romance, despair, grief, excitement, suspense, you name it! There were two points in this book that I actually started to cry! And I don't normally cry from a book, a movie perhaps but not a book.

Our main characters, Justin and Mandy, have reacquainted themselves to each other, and it's right at the start.

Justin is in the Coast Guard with a passion for the sea. Mandy is a nurse at a local hospital and is recovering from breast cancer and a bad breakup. After meeting again at the hospital where she works, and the push from her best friend, Mandy goes on a date with Justin.

The romance was so rich, Justin was truly in love with Mandy from the moment he laid eyes on her and it shows through the author's writing.

Even though Justin can be a brute some times and it very overly dramatic, to a point I wanted to jump into the book and smack him up side the head, this story is very heart felt and beaming with HEA!

If you can, I wouldn't miss out on this one, I read it in one day!!!

Before I begin my criticism I have to say that I absolutely loved this book!!!! However, the first page I can honestly say I was skeptical if I'd make it through the book. It seemed to drone on with over exaggerated descriptions of the sea and a sinking boat. It is fine and dandy to set the seen but it seemed a bit overwhelming with so many adjectives. Once the author seemed to get over the need to be so descriptive and just let the story tell the tale, I couldn't put the book down.

I most importantly like the creativeness of the overall plot. I don't think I've heard of another book where the paranormal character is derived from a God and has a power of his/her descendants. Way to be original!....very ingenious! I give it a 5 star rating!

The Calling was a really good book that was more romance than paranormal. However, it was still a really good book. There were layers to the story that all worked together to keep you interest and compelled to read more. I won’t say more because I’m not one for spoilers.

I fell in love with Justin from the beginning and never wavered from that. I wish there would have been a bit more of the paranormal aspect because it was so interesting. But it wasn’t like the story truly lacked because of that. That is just a personal preference. I think this is a stand alone book, but if not maybe the paranormal would be explored more in the next book.

Great read!

I was totally stoked to get this books from R2R book reviews.

I loved how the story starts with Justin and Mandy, so raw and real with the issues that they are going through, its so good you cant put it down i was reading well into the early hours of the morning last night.

its really well written and you just fall in love with the characters as well, even those its paranormal its not the main focus i feel in the book. i Hope the Book doesn't end and there is a sequel i want to read more!

DNF @ 12%. Why ruin a perfectly good book and characters with slutshaming and a friendship that's not a friendship at all? Seriously, what's up with that?

This story took me by surprise, but in a really good way. Initially, I was drawn in by the blurb and the “paranormal” aspect of this story. It seemed completely different from any other paranormal I read with werewolves or vampires. The hint of Justin’s ability in the blurb had me thinking I’d be getting more of a mythological type paranormal, and it is, but just slightly so.

When we meet Mandy, it’s been a year since her mastectomy and she’s back to work. Chemo is over and her hair is growing out, but is still much shorter than the long locks she had before her surgery. She’s had breast reconstruction, but no matter the talent of the surgeon, there is nothing like a real breast. She’s basically numb on that side and the nipple you see is a tattoo; she has no sensitivity at all. But Mandy is alive and trying to get on with her life. She is still emotional about her ex-fiancé, and she fears that she’ll never find someone who can accept her, scars and all. She’s got some great girlfriends though and they are not going to let her sit home, alone and worry about things that she doesn’t have control over.

Mandy doesn’t know it, but Justin Seward has had feelings for her for a long time. He kept them to himself because Mandy was engaged to his best friend Ty. But that friendship was over the minute Ty left Mandy the way he did. Justin had reached out to Mandy repeatedly during her recovery from surgery, but Justin was just too close to Ty and Mandy couldn’t deal with that in her emotional state.

Things are different now, however. When Mandy runs into Justin at the hospital, she is nervous about talking to him after ignoring his calls for nearly eight months. But Justin is just as happy to see Mandy as she is to see him and she can’t mistake the look of longing in his eyes. He’s missed her and if she were to be honest with herself, she’s missed him too. As they start to spend time together, it’s clear that there is more to this than just friendship.

Justin has a secret, though, and he knows that if he’s going to have the life he wants with Mandy, he’s going to have to tell her about all of it. Before he can do it, though, they are faced with several obstacles that will really test their new and still fragile relationship. In the end, they’ll both realize much about themselves and come to learn that they are so much stronger together than they are apart.

I have to admit that I actually read this story twice. After the first read, which I rushed through just trying to get to the end to see what would happen, I just didn’t get that “satisfied” feeling I usually get from a book that captures me like this one did. So I set it aside and then picked it up again a few weeks later and did a re-read, slower this time. Then I figured out what was bothering me. The story is labeled ‘paranormal romance’ but it reads so much more like a contemporary with a very light pnr flair. Yes, Justin has the ability to control the sea and it is a huge part of him and this story, but the author does a terrific job of weaving that in throughout the story without having it take over. Truly, for me anyway, the focus of this story is on the people, their relationships and the growing romance between Justin and Mandy.

Mandy is an extremely likable character. Here you have a woman, who days before major surgery gets dumped. She manages, with the help of her family and friends to get through one of the most trying times in her life. She is not jaded or hateful in any way though she does struggle with her self-image which of course affects her self confidence. She’s known Justin for a while, so when he pops into her life she’s certainly not thinking anything romantic, even though Justin puts it all out there pretty much from the beginning.

There are a host of secondary characters from Mandy’s friends to Justin’s co-workers, but there is much emphasis on Justin’s family because of his “secret”. I especially enjoyed Justin’s mother-who really keeps us guessing. Is she really suffering from a mental breakdown? Or is she fooling everyone in order to achieve her own goals. Ultimately though, it is the relationship between Justin and his dad that I found most endearing. They are estranged for the most part at the beginning of this story. Due to a tragic event that occurred when Justin was about 10 years old, his parent’s relationship was never the same. His mother becoming depressed and ending up in a facility for most of her life. The author does a fabulous job of bringing Justin and his dad together again with forgiveness and love.

This is a beautiful story of second chances and forgiveness with a wonderful happy ending. And while there is a paranormal aspect to this story, its light for the most part except near the end where it does become the focus and has much to do with outcome of the story. There is a lovely epilogue too and I love when an author does that.

Cancer survivor Mandy Hardy is scarred both physically and emotionally when her ex fiance's former best friend, Justin Seward comes back into her life. Author Ashley Willis's brave, yet hesitant main character won my heart within a few pages, although seeing Mandy struggle to accept the hopes Justin has for her, and for them, hurt my heart a little at times. Deserted by her fiance just as she fell truly ill with breast cancer, Mandy is terrified to open up to someone again - even loyal, patient Justin. But Justin stole my heart as he won Mandy's - slowly, and with infinite care and tenderness. Having admired, respected, and maybe even loved Mandy from afar for years, Justin finally approaches her once Ty, her ex, is out of the picture, and what plays out across the pages of Ashley's parnormal romance is a beautiful, loving relationship that, while not without its bumps, really warmed my heart, and brought me to tears a time or two.

My thoughts: Where to begin? I really enjoyed this book. It wasn't fully what I expected, then again sometimes it's good to be surprised. Mandy, the heroine, of the stories, goes though breast cancer, a mastectomy, and her fiancé, Ty, leaving her while this is all going on. Justin, was Mandy’s ex's and Ty's best friend, but always had a thing for Mandy. When Mandy and Ty broke up, she separated herself from Justin as well. Then fate intervenes, bringing Justin and Mandy back together. Justin is a coast guard rescue swimmer, but he is more than that, he has a power! The power to control the ocean though he doesn't let anyone in on that secret. One daring rescue of a father and boy and a visit to check in on the boy afterward, leads to him and Mandy reconnecting as Mandy is the boy’s nurse. Mandy, one bitten twice shy, is scared to let anyone in or close, especially if the cancer may return. After a few outings with Justin, Mandy can't help but wish for more. Justin, puts it all out there. How he wants her to be his, though he holds back the most important part. Ty try's to get Mandy back once he sees things are serious between Mandy and Justin, but she won't have it. Eventually Justin tells Mandy his secret and they face a few incidents that they need to overcome. We learn how Justin got the powers to control water, but I won't share that in this review as I thought that was a pretty interesting and cool part of the book. He does get hurt real bad and has recovery time, so this is not your typical paranormal flare. This was more contemporary than paranormal, but it still had light paranormal. Ashley Lynn Willis did a great job for making Mandy seem so real and a leading lady I personally love. Though toward the end I wanted to grab Mandy and shake some sense into her, I was happy at the conclusion. Justin is so sweet, sexy and protective with all the other great characteristics you want in a guy, including the extra special-ness of controlling the ocean and to top it off he is a coast guard. The passion between the leading characters heats up the pages. The love for each other is felt. I enjoyed the side characters such as her best friends. However, one of them I would have tossed to the side after some vital information is learned. Don’t get me started on Ty, you will definitely love to hate him. When an author can bring out these kind of emotions from a reader, then they have done a good job in my book. After all, I couldn’t put “The Calling” down. Over all, for Willis’ first book, I really enjoyed it and I'm looking forward to seeing more from her in the future.

**More at behindtherows.com **

Several life changing events has happened over the last year for Mandy Hardy. Surviving breast cancer, having a mastectomy, battling chemo, and dealing with the break-up with the man she loved and thought she would marry has all taken a toll on Mandy.
Justin Seward has secretly admired Mandy throughout her relationship with his best friend and roommate, Ty. After seeing Ty for what he really is, Justin removes himself from Ty's life in hopes of being a friend with Mandy.
One night, after rescuing a boy from the high seas during his job at the Coast Guard, Justin bumps into Mandy at the hospital where she works as a nurse. From there they not only reunite as friends, but both hope for something a little more.
Can Mandy put away her feelings of abandonment and low self-worth to let Justin into her life and help mend the shattered pieces of her heart? Maybe not. Justin has a few secrets that he needs to share with her before they can move forward. There are mysteries behind this man that go well beyond what we believe as humans. Something that can only be explained if there were ancient gods.
It seems like the story could end there, but it doesn't. Together, this couple is really put to the test. A past that haunts them, guilt, family, a crazy ex, and a race against time to save the life of loved ones, The Calling seemed like several stories all wrapped into one. There was never a dull moment! I honestly didn't know where the author was going to take me next and by the last page I let out a big sigh (and I didn't realize I was even holding my breath).
The characters are believable in where they have been and how they are presented. Nothing seemed to come out of left field, even though it is a "paranormal" novel. I felt that I was right there with them and nothing was ever out of place. I also loved how Mandy and Justin had to struggle for their relationship just like any couple would. It wasn't all hearts and roses even when you know they are perfect for each other.
This book touches the heart of issues that I'm sure many of us struggle with. Everything from acceptance, grieving, forgiveness, survival, and fighting for what you love were accounted for. I was impressed with how Willis fit so many touching points into a paranormal romance and still kept the focus of the book about this amazing god-like man with extraordinary abilities.
The love scenes were tender and steamy and the action scenes were jammed packed. I enjoyed every page of this book and recommend anyone who enjoys mythology, paranormal, or just a good romance to pick it up.

This book was received free of charge for the purpose of review.

I really liked this book.

Justin was sweet and kind, not to mention good looking. Plus he really cared about Mandy, as a fried as well as a lover. He even stood up to his best friend Ty in regards to Mandy, long before he even knew if he had a shot with her. As for the whole issue of it was his best friends girl. Well Ty was being a dill weed, to put it mildly, and he deserved what he got. Willis did a really good job with Mandy as well. From her concerns about her cancer returning to her fear of being rejected simply because of her surgery scars, and mostly everything in between. Mandy felt real and I liked her. I found myself able to understand and sympathize with her. There is this great bathroom scene in the beginning of the book. Mandy is freaking out over some tests and her best friend, Lori, comes in to check on her. Before I spoil the whole scene for you, let me just stop myself and say that the banter between the two friends felt real. I could imagine it happening in real life.

The only problem I had at all in the story was near to the end. ***Major Spoiler alert*** Justin and Mandy are cornered by Ty and Justin goes into a rage and defends Mandy. Mandy gets freaked out because of how over the top Justin's anger went. She even runs off and says she doesn't think she can be with him since he can't control his anger. Ok. Look, if one of my ex-boyfriends shot a gun at my head and my boyfriend went ballistic and accidentally hurt my ex I would NOT be feeling any sympathy for my ex. Sorry, maybe that makes me a bad person *shrug* but it's just my opinion.***End Spoiler alert*** Ok, maybe that wasn't soo bad a spoiler.

Besides that one issue I had with Mandy, I really liked the book. Willis's description of the sea are beautiful, I felt like I was really there. As I said before her handling of Mandy's issues from her cancer was spot on. I would definitely read more of this authors work.

This story was very romantic with great characters and interesting plot. I felt it was a fast paced easy read which I didn’t want to end.

Justin is the ideal boyfriend/husband. He’s kind, loving, caring, and thoughtful. Everything a girl wants in a man. The only problem is that he is Ty’s best friend. Oh and he also has a big secret. I for one think it’s a wonderful secret but he looks down on his ability because pass events have made him wary of it. He has had a rough past with having a suicidal mother over the death of Cecilia, his baby sister and has been abandoned by his father after that same tragic event. He is raised by his aunt and uncle after his mother is put in a psychiatric hospital to keep her safe from herself. Justin is now a Coast Guard rescuer which is very fitting and appropriate since he has the ability to manipulate water. He is also very much in love with Mandy and has been from the first moment her saw her.

Mandy is a realist who is trying to get over her ex-fiancé Ty who left her after she was diagnosed with breast cancer. It has been months since her last treatment when she runs into Justin at the hospital that she works at. She is nervous and wary that the sight of him will bring back memories of Ty but the unexpected stop turns out to be a pleasant surprise her.

This was a very pleasant story that I actually read twice since I like it so much. I would recommend this book to any adult supernatural/paranormal romance junk since it does have some pretty steamy scenes.

I read this book as part of the R2R advanced release.

I have mixed feelings about the book. I think that Ashley Lynn did a very good job at the characterizations and personalities. Everyone felt very fleshed out and reactions to action in the storyline felt real. She handled the sensitivity around being a breast cancer survivor extremely well, and it really added to the realism of Mandy's character. I've not read a lot of books with this insight, and it immediately drew me in. The scene with Mandy and Lori in the bathroom stall was fantastic. As the male lead, Justin was the perfect combination of sensitive and alpha male and definitely easy to root for.

On the other hand, the paranormal side of the story didn't sit well with me. Like others have noted, there wasn't much of a paranormal slant, and because of that it was almost jarring against the every day realism of the rest of the story. Maybe that juxtaposition is what Ashley Lynn was going for, but it didn't feel integrated enough to me. There wasn't really a conflict or building tension through the story that required a resolution, something usually pretty ingrained in paranormal romances I've read. The demigod aspect felt pretty much like an afterthought except for in the couple climaxes of the book, and even then it felt...flat. I guess I need more para than normal in my supernatural mythos and this book just didn't quite work on that level.
