The title is going to scare off many teachers who might be biased towards the idea that all children are filled with sweetness and light - exclusively. A stupid concept. If you are currently struggling with, or ever have struggled with, the kind of student(s) who lash out verbally and physically on a consistent basis, if you now feel or have ever felt yourself held hostage in your own classroom, if you're frustrated with more "up-to-date" (read: trendy) attitudes and interventions, read this book. It is mostly descriptive, but the descriptions are insightful. The second volume, Controls From Within, is prescriptive. I'll be on to that particular paperback very soon.

Another classic for any interested in working intensively with children. Saved my life and sanity when I was a foster parent.

Noted that the Author was featured in NASW news in 9-95 when he died....sounds depressing, but perhaps important given my work.
