"Essential Biochemistry" offers chemists a streamlined approach to the field, focusing on the chemistry behind the biology. The selective approach allows them to understand the main ideas without needing to memorize many specific details. The second edition offers the most up-to-date coverage, placing more emphasis on the coverage of molecular structure, laboratory techniques, and problem solving. It retains core topics of biochemistry, using real examples of chemical reactions and molecular structures. Integrated media also provides chemists with a review of difficult concepts along with molecular structure tutorials and interactive animations.
Slightly dense in some places, but enzyme mechanism diagrams help a lot with visualization. Explanations are detailed and there are enough problems at the end of each chapter to keep an undergraduate busy for a while.
Overall, this book should be sufficient for an introductory survey course in Biochemistry (this is the context within which I used it as a student).
It is a useful book when you're studying both Biology and Chemistry. It is helpful with some of the parts which were more detailed and also it has a mixture of both of the subjects. Truth be told, I love reading all of the Science subjects and Chemistry was my favourite.
