This vividly illustrated counting book places the traditional rhyme in an African setting. Animals and their babies munch, swim, and sleep as young readers count their way from one to ten on a safari-like adventure. Featuring a final one through ten counting page, Over in the Grasslands is a delightful way to help beginners learn their numbers and discover the wildlife of the African plain.

A book suitable for year 1. Pictures, Rhyme and counting all incorporated into this tale. Personally, not my favourite, however good for cross curricula and consolidating knowledge of numbers one to ten!
An ascending counting animals book where each page has one more baby animal with the mother than the page before. All animals are safari animals. Preschool and up
For the listening station. Draw a picture about something that happened in the story. Write a sentence about your favorite/least favorite part of the story and why. Comprehension questions for class discussion: How many animals were _____ ?
Which animals had tails? Which animals walked on all four legs? What sort of things do they need to survive?
We recently found this book and my daughter already has it memorized! We have caught her singing it to herself many times. It's sung to the tune Over in the Meadow and I have to admit, I love singing the gentle lyrics too. The illustrations are very vibrant. The book slowly counts up to ten as you meet a variety of animal moms and their babies. This would be a great book to sing/read before bedtime because it goes throughout the day and ends with a group of monkeys going to sleep.
Adorable little book that introduces little ones to animals in the African grasslands. Sung to the tune of the folk song "Over in the Meadow," we meet lions playing, warthogs oinking, and many other animals of the grasslands. If you look closely, you can count the animals in each picture and see as we count ultimately to ten animals at the end. The illustrations of the animals are bright and colorful. What a fun read/sing aloud to share with little ones.
Over In the Grasslands is a new take on the Over In the Meadow nursery rhyme. I really enjoyed this story, and thought it would be a great picture book to use with a counting concept or animal/safari concept. Cute story that will have your students singing along.
By coincidence we borrowed the "Over in the Meadow" story at the same time as we borrowed this one. They are, of course, very similar stories, with this one having a more wild flavor. It was interesting for the girls to talk about the differences in the two stories.
I do not like how the illustrator featured, for example, 8 frogs on the left hand page with the text, and then more frogs on the right hand side...makes it very confusing for a young child to count along.
This engaging book teaches preschoolers about counting, animals, and verb tense, all in a cheerful, palatable form. It is a read and re-read library book in our house that I wouldn't mind upgrading to ownership at the right price!
Repetitive structure makes this book easy to memorize. Students can follow along and count the number of creatures. Because it is easy to learn, this can aid students in building a strong number sense to ten. This book would be appropriate for studnets Pre-K through 1st.
Over in the grasslands by Anna Wilson a cute book about counting for early elementary, using African animals, rhyme and repetition, you can use the same tune to sing it as over in the meadow
