Oh, to be a puddy-gato in the world today.
Oh, to be a puddy-cat in front of a buffet.
Oh, to be a kitty who can rule the house and yard
Oh, to be a royal cat and not a St. Bernard.

No, that's not part of this book, just my riffing whenever I see a cat giving the royal 'tude (which is always). Still, I appreciate the little furballs. So I couldn't resist picking up this book which tells the tale of a rather spoiled orange tabby who believes he is a king because he is treated as a king.

His owners are an elderly couple who fuss over the little mouser and in true cat-style, he leaves them (temporarily) to have a little cat adventure. After all, cat owners are just staff.

Dragonfly and bumblebee, I am your ruling majesty.
Over birds and mice I reign. This is my kingdom, my domain!

This is a children's picture book meant to be part of nighttime storytime. The illustrations are simple but easily tell the story, and I'm sure little ones up to age 4 or 5 will love it.

Book Season = Year Round (it's good to be the King)

The big orange tabby cat who lives with Mr. and Mrs. Petticomb thinks of himself as King Cat, and in this story he tells you why. Obviously, this is a pampered kitty! He likes to ride on Mr. Petticomb's shoulders, but does he stay there? No! He's off to have cat adventures, while his people anxiously wait for his return. Typical cat! The illustrations are colorful. My favorite is the picture of the cat on his back, showing his belly, amongst the flowers. It's a nice book, but lacks something in story. It might have been better if it had been told from an omniscient viewpoint and not in rhyme. The author/illustrator has cats and went to college in Syracuse, not far from me. Recommended for cat lovers.

This cute book reminded me of one of our cats that we used to call our “shoulder pet.” Very cute and well written.
