Human Vampire #2

de Sang: Embrace Your Blood Lust

Rate this book
de Sang is book two in the Human Vampire series.

When the famous artist and self-proclaimed king of the Vampires, Lohr Varius, brings his collection to the gallery Kate Miller works at, he awakens a desire in her that has nothing to do with art and everything to do with Living Vampires. That desire leads her to underground blood bar, La Luxure, where she finds herself inexplicably drawn to the cocky bartender claiming to be the "real deal".

But it isn't long before she discovers not everyone is as they seem, and as the crimson-eyed bartender warns, not everyone is safe.

Another brilliantly written book by C.D. Hussey!

New Orleans is once again the perfect setting for the dark yet sexy vampire society! The well timed and not too obvious developing romance between Slade and Kate alone, captured my attention and I had a difficult time putting this one down! Loved the steam, loved the intimate conversations and loved Slade's chivalry with Kate! (Swoon-worthy!!)

To my surprise, this story also included a clever mystery which enhanced and allowed the two main character's romance to naturally take it's course, which also allowed a segway for Hussey's third book in the series, "Eveillez" (to be released in April, 2012.) The appearance of Julia and Armand towards the end of the book, which gives the reader insight to their future together was another element Hussey included and I absoutely adored!

I am anxiously awaiting the release of Ms. Hussey's next book!

This is the second in Hussey's 'paranormal but not supernatural' Human Vampires series. This sequel doesn't disappoint. The story and characters pull you in from the first paragraph. Those who read the first book, La Luxure, will recognize most of the characters here. If you didn't, don't be concerned, it is a totally stand alone story set in the same bar and locale.

Slade is the gorgeous and seriously built thirty-something bartender. He is tired of the singles scene and wants to find what Armand and Julia (bar owners and friends) have found - love and acceptance. Running the bar in Armand's absence, he doesn't have a chance to go out and find someone, he figures someone will just have to come to him there in the bar. When she does, he's blown away not only by her looks but by her feisty hellcat nature.

Kate is a young twenty-something lady a bit into the Goth scene who decides she wants to learn more about the Vampire subculture she's heard about. When she finds she is attracted to Slade, who she thinks is a playa, she is shocked at herself but she can't seem to stay away from him.

Lohr, a favorite artist of Kate's, is a painter and photographer enjoying moderate success and has declared himself the king of vampires. She is stunned when he comes onto her and is later creeped out by his attentions even though he seems to be her type - the opposite of Slade. Turns out she has reason to be wary of him.

The author says, "I look at La Luxure like you're viewing New Orleans and the [vampire subculture] through a tourist's eyes. And with de Sang, you already live there." While you certainly can read this book without having read the first one, I suggest reading the first one for the mystery and intrigue and stay awhile to read this second and get to know the characters and the subculture a little better.

The sexy scenes in this one are so hot, I think I saw steam coming out of my computer while I was reading it. There are a couple scenes in the bar, one on a motorcycle and when they get to the bed, oh my...

I fell in love with Slade in this story. And of course Armand from the first book is pretty awesome too. Hussey is able to draw you into the story and doesn't let you go until the end.

I was lucky to be on the editing team for this story and before you think that gave me undue bias for this story, check out my review of the first book which I read and reviewed.

OMG....I love this series!! Thank you CD Hussey for providing me with a copy of this to review!!

In this sequel to La Luxure: Discover Your Blood Lust by C.D. Hussey, we folllow Kate. The outcast of her family with a secret lust for men with a goth edge. Since moving to the Big Easy, she's tried to map out a life for herself. With a great eye for art, she works part-time at a gallery. One of her favorite artists Lohr Varius is having a big show at her gallery and is quite smitten with Kate.

There were a million stories on the Internet regarding Lohr Varius. As the self-proclaimed king of the vampires, most of them surrounded his love of blood and blood play. Looking into his electric blue eyes, she didn't doubt those stories for a second. She'd dismissed the darker, more twisted rumors — he killed his subjects himself, or he was actually 150 years old — as nothing more than hype. She wasn't sure she could discount any of them now that she'd met the man in person. It did make him even more intriguing.

After her meeting with Lohr...shes got vampires on the brain. She's somewhat familiar with the Living Vampire subculture but always believed it to be an urban legend. But her encounter with Lohr, she's wondering if its really true. So Kate decides to see what all the hype is about with the Living Vampire culture and goes looking for La Luxure....

Slade...a Living Vampire, The Italian Stallion/Bartender at La Luxure. Since seeing his best friend Armand and his new wife Julia, he's starting to realize that he's sick of the single life. He no longer wants just a Donor. But a Donor/Lover and he thinks he might have found her in Kate.

Kate thinks Slade is a playboy....and she's also not sure why she's even attracted to him since Lohr Varius is more her type. So on goes the cat and mouse game with Kate and Slade....they really are made for each other.....

I liked this one more than the first one...if at all possible! I loved Slade in this, which was surprising cuz I didnt like him much in the first one. He was too judgemental when it came to Julia. But whatevs....I lovem now! Maybe its the fauxhawk...yummm!! This is a really cool world that Hussey has created with the Living Vamps...I just love it! If you're looking for something steamy thats not quite paranormal, but different...then please give it a try! Im sure glad I did!!

I am hoping that with this book, C.D. Hussey will continue to receive all 5 star reviews as she so evidentally deserves them. I felt that my purchase of her 1st book, La Luxure, was one of the best buys of my reading history. While I was gifted this book by Ms. Hussey (THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!), I plan to pass on my good fortune by purchasing it for some friends. Sharing excellent reading material with others is a quiet gift :)

de Sang is Slade's story, and is so exquisitely written that I dropped into reading nirvana within the first pages.I always wonder that an author can craft such emotions with the same words that the rest of us use daily, can create something that is so special that it requires one to sit and read and read and read until there is no more. I felt this with La Luxure and again with de Sang. I don't mean to sound melodramatic, but this is the kind of book that I bet other authors WISH they had written. And for sure the concept of Human Vampires is one that is not overdone in today's reading materials. That shows true creativity as its best.

Slade is the muscled bartender we met in La Luxure, the one who didn't fall for sweet Julia right away and who honors and protects the bar's owner, Armand, as he considers that Armand saved his life by introducing him into the Community. Slade was a skinny, sickly youth until Armand brought him to the Sang; blood literally saved his life. He knows the good and the bad side of the Community, however, as he has thouroughly explored it by now. Jaded, thy name is Slade. Yet he finds he now has a new Craving, that of a monogamous relationship like Armand and Julie have.

Kate is an assistant at a NOLA art gallery, where she meets the dark, sexy Lohr whose artistic subject is death. With his sheet of long black hair and his white skin, he is the type of man Kate has always been attracted to. Yet from the minute she meets Slade, she feels something different. She wants to ignore him but can't; she just wants him to tell her about this curiousity she has for the blood. When Slade offers to show her a bit about what a HV is, she takes him up on it and is totally shocked to find herself turned on by him when he gives her a little demonstration of being a blood donor. Kate runs from Slade almost into the arms of Lohr, the self-styled King of the Vampires.

There are so many interesting characters in this story, and so much information about the HV condition. Ms. Hussey weaves a sexy tale of this somewhat lurid subject without casting asperations or ignoring the moral boundaries. The angst that Slade endures regarding his medically unproven need for blood, Kate's curiousity about this subculture, the outright craziness of some members of the Community, the emotional manipulations of Angel, all are explored and braided together. Become surreal. I felt that all of this is somehow real, that these people are somehow real and this place is real and just waiting for me to find it the next time I visit New Orleans. This is the test of an exceptional talent - and boy, does Ms. Hussey pass!

"I can't wait to taste you."

**Please note, this book was gifted to me by the author**

The only thing better than getting a book gifted to you is getting an AMAZING book gifted to you. When Ms. Hussey asked if I would like a copy to read and review, I thought, surely this is a trick question. I absolutely loved book 1, you can read my review here.

This is the second installment of the Human Vampire series. We met Slade (AKA- Scott Corelli) in book 1. He's Armand's friend, number 2 guy and bartender at La Luxure. He's also a tall, gorgeous Italian, the size of two average men. With Armand away on his honeymoon, Slade is in charge. Aside from that responsibility, Slade is having to deal with his Cravings. His need to "feed" is increasing, the symptoms stronger. He's growing increasingly less comfortable having to call on his "donor" Nikki. Within that warrior physique, lies a huge heart. A heart that longs for what Armand and Julia have found in one another.

I have fast become a fan of this series. I purchased the first book, La Luxure, because it was $.99 and a friend recommended it to me. I quickly discovered what a diamond in the rough it was! So, I was anxiously awaiting the second book to come out. I was not dissapointed!I devoured this story! It had similar romance and sex that I loved from the first book, but De Sang was much more action-packed and I loved it! The character development was awesome. I found myself sympathizing with Kate and falling in love with Slade. I can't wait to read more about this alluring community. This author and made my favorites list!

I really loved this book! Embrace Your Blood Lust was more then a PNR or Vampire novel or Erotica or love story! For me, this was a story of the Vampire Archetype. I loved the relationship to the light and shadow side of the archetype explored in this book. Slade is the light side of the vampire archetype. Kate is a great heroine and is attracted to the "vampire" type of man. She has to decide whether she wants the shadow or dark side of the vampire life style. What will her judgements bring her? What will her decisions based of these judgement yield her and those close to her? This is another surprise from C.D. Hussey.

Many thanks to the author for providing me with a copy of this book to review.

De Sang is the second installment in C. D. Hussey’s Human Vampire series. The first book, La Luxure, was one of my favourite reads of 2011 (you can see my review here) and I was thrilled when I learned de Sang was out. Though I couldn’t help but wonder: would I like this story as much as I liked the first one?

For starters, I didn’t like Slade, the hero of de Sang, that much in La Luxure, mainly because of his reserved stance toward Julia, the heroine of the first installment. And I absolutely loved Julia! Speaking of Julia, would I like the heroine of de Sang as much?

Then it was Armand, the hero of La Luxure. He was absolutely, totally, amazingly, drop-dead gorgeous. Would Slade measure up?

Another thought was that, in La Luxure, the author successfully introduced her fascinating human vampire world; would she manage to make it equally interesting in this second installment? And would the story be as compelling as in La Luxure?

Well, I’m very pleased to say C.D. Hussey delivered!

Slade became one of my perfect romance heroes. One, he’s Italian. And I love Italians. Two, he has sleek black hair styled in a faux-hawk. And I have developed a thing for that darn hair style ever since I saw it on David Beckham a few years back. You don’t believe me? See for yourselves, here! Three, he’s off the charts gorgeous; tall and sexy and delightfully muscled with a pair of bulging biceps that fully fill out the sleeves of his tight black T-shirts. Four, he owns a Victory bike. What can I say. The man is yum. Plus, he’s everything but a meathead. But his real virtue is that all of the above are combined with a kind heart, a great sense of loyalty and a true need to find his real mate, a woman to love and share his life with, just like Armand did with Julia.

Enter Kate Miller, the flame-haired art lover in her mid-twenties who works part-time as an assistant at a local gallery and dreams of some day having her own art exhibition space. She has moved to New Orleans from Texas after years and years of being treated like the “red-headed stepchild” by her posh and wealthy family. She is determined to make a life for herself in beautiful NOLA and also to explore the local living vampire community. Her curiosity leads her to La Luxure, the city’s famous blood bar. Her instant attraction to Slade, the bartender, and the passionate moments they share in the bar’s back room almost befuddle her as she’s not usually attracted to men like Slade.

Cut to de Sang’s secondary characters. I daresay they are much more compelling than those of La Luxure. Even those reappearing in this book from the first one, like Darus and Angel and Nikki, have something new to contribute to the story. Lohr Varius, the famous Goth artist with the Calvin Klein model looks and the very dark side; Melanie, Kate’s friend and flat mate; Doctor Anderson, the MD who tries to hide his blood cravings from his wife; Detective McCoy, who I have the feeling we will be seeing again very soon. I was also very happy to see Armand and Julia again, fresh from their honeymoon. Made me feel all warm and fuzzy inside.

The story as a whole was a pleasant surprise and I enjoyed the touch of suspense toward the end. Also, the author managed to deliver it in the same fresh way she delivered the previous installment, establishing her very own vivid writing style. The story evolves from the first to the second installment in a smooth and natural way; yet you feel that this human vampire world has much more to say.

Engrossing and highly gratifying, de Sang is the perfect sequel to La Luxure. Eveillez, the third installment will have a tough time competing with these two novels but I’m positive Ms Hussey will pull through.

Kate is a starving art degree goth who is living and working in New Orleans. After a local artist seems to awaken her lust for being around living vampires, she meets Slade, a good looking Italian bartender at the local blood bar La Luxure. She thinks he is everything that she doesn’t want, yet she can’t resist him.
Have you ever read a book, and when it ends you scream, cry, and thoroughly scare the 8 lives out of your cats? Well, that is what happened when I finished this book. This second installment in The Human Vampire Series leaves me wanting more, in a good way. I thoroughly loved this book!
Slade and Kate both have a lot of baggage from their past that they are both having to work out and work through. Slade hasn’t seen his family since he became a living vampire, while Kate is the outcast in her family because she is the “red-headed child”. I loved seeing how they worked through their personal issues. Slade, more than Katie, has to major life changing issues to work through, and you can’t help but wonder if his stubbornness is worse because of all the experiences he has had through the book or whether it is just a culmination of a whole life of issues.
This book is a bit darker than the previous book. I must admit, there were moments that I actually got creeped out by certain characters, though I loved getting to know other characters better. And the whole turnaround of one of the characters between the first book and the second book is a great in adding to the story line. There is of course a lot more I’d love to tell you about, but I hate telling spoilers. So go ahead and read this book!
Overall, this is a great book. I CANNOT wait till the third in this series comes out. Highly recommend this book.

If you have not yet read La Luxure, C.D. Hussey first book in this series I strongly suggest you read it first prior to de Sang. La Luxure is great first introduction to Hussey's New Orleans vampire world with mystery and intrigue. De Sang is a great follow up showing this intense world more from the insiders view. De Sang will immerse you in the world of Human Vampires and the struggles everyone has finding a place they fit in no matter where and what they are. Once again with a C.D. Hussey book I had to finish it in one sitting as I could not put it down once I started. I look forward to reading the next installment!

I loved La Luxure so I bought de Sang, though I didn't know how it would hold up now that the 'real' vampire surprise was sprung. Though a reader knows about the secret after reading the first, the second book was extremely enjoyable. It was a different book all together. It wasn't trying to be like the first and I enjoyed it's individuality. The hero was familiar from the first book but he could carry his own. The heroine was as different from the first as possible. I loved them both.

I bought this book at the same time as the first in this series, which I thought was PNR...it's not. This book was a little better than the first because I knew what to expect, it had alot of action and the hero Slade seemed to really need blood to stay healthy instead of just as a fetish.
