Chicago Rebels hockey player Dex O'Malley has been a naughty boy ... again.

Only his latest stunt isn’t quite like when he was caught with his pants down at a nightclub or was cited for drag-racing on Lake Shore Drive or even that time he said a few critical things about his teammates on a hockey podcast. Oops. This time, Dex is in real trouble, the kind that could get him kicked off the team and out of the league. And that cannot happen. Hockey is the only thing he’s ever been good at. The only thing he cares about. He’ll do whatever it takes to rehab his rep, even if it means cleaning up dog poop and suffering the steely-eyed disapproval of his new no-nonsense “boss” at the animal shelter, Ashley Adams.

Ashley has enough on her plate between her low-paying job, her high-maintenance family, and a love life she’s trying to resurrect after her divorce. She’s already mom to an amazing nine-year-old; the last thing she needs is mothering a celebrity volunteer with more money than sense. But the troublemaking f-boy needs Ashley to sign off on his good deeds so he can get back to what he does best: lighting up lamps both on and off the ice. And while a guy like that could never interest her mind, it seems her body is not on the same page. Sure, Dex O’Malley is too young, too hot, too flighty for Ashley to take seriously, but maybe a brief ride on the wild side might fit the bill …

Only that’s not enough for Dex. What happens when this notorious player decides the older, single mom is the hottest woman he’s ever met and that he wants to light her lamp … forever?

"Wild Ride" by Kate Meader is a delightful and steamy romance that hits all the right notes. Dex O'Malley's journey from troublemaking hockey player to devoted volunteer at the animal shelter is both entertaining and heartwarming. The banter between Dex and Ashley Adams crackles with chemistry, and Meader expertly balances hilarious moments with genuine emotional depth. Despite their differences, Dex and Ashley's connection feels authentic and compelling. Meader's writing shines, delivering witty dialogue and sizzling romance that keeps readers hooked until the very end. As a fan of Meader's work, I was not disappointed by "Wild Ride." It's a must-read for anyone who enjoys a charming romance with plenty of steamy energy and heartfelt moments

DNF at 32%. I couldn't finish this book. Dex was too much of a manwhore. It was too talked about to the point where he was gross, unlikeable and irredeemable.

⭐ 3/5 Stars

These three stars are almost entirely for Dex and the absolute sweetheart that is Willa.

Dex starts out as a jerk, yes—but unlike many MMCs who stay that way and call it a personality, his backstory actually explains his behavior. More importantly, he does the work. He reflects, he grows, and he actively tries to be better. His character arc felt earned, and I genuinely loved watching him confront his issues and step up—not just for himself, but for the people he cared about.

And Willa? A precious little angel. Truly one of the best parts of the book.

Ashley, on the other hand… was deeply disappointing.

She constantly contradicts herself in ways that made her hard to respect. On one hand, she claims to hate how her sisters’ man-hating attitudes might negatively influence her daughter. On the other, she regularly bad-mouths Dex—often within earshot—and internally demeans him even after he starts treating her with respect. Calling him a “himbo” in her head, looking down on him, and mentally categorizing their relationship as a “dirty affair” with someone she considers beneath her? That’s not caution—that’s contempt.

What bothered me most was the hypocrisy. While Dex is clearly falling in love and trying to build something meaningful, Ashley treats him like an embarrassment she’s temporarily entertaining. And all the while, she’s supposedly worried about modeling good behavior for her child. I struggled to reconcile those two things. Because degrading someone you’re involved with—especially someone who is actively trying to do better—is neither fair nor healthy.

It was painful to watch Dex open up emotionally while Ashley kept him at arm’s length, judging him instead of meeting him halfway. The imbalance in how they viewed each other really undercut the romance for me.

In the end, Dex’s growth carried the story, but Ashley’s attitude kept it from being something I could fully enjoy. A frustrating read with a strong MMC—and an FMC who should’ve known better.

Another winner in this series! I couldn't put this book down. Dex has a reputation and it's not good. He is in hot water and now he one chance at redemption is volunteering at an animal shelter. That will forever change his life for the better because Ashely and her daughter bring out the best in Dex. He is such a better man, but the best part he wants to be. We learn that his childhood has greatly impacted the person he is. It has left some scars on his heart. One of the best parts of the book for me was seeing Dex realize how man people he truly has in his corner. Ashely's ex is a piece of work. I felt for Willa because I completely get being disappointed by your dad. That was my childhood as well. It was so beautiful to see Dex build up Willa and he loves her the way she is. Those were some of my favorite scenes, the ones with Willa and Dex. Willa is a smart little cookie and I love her word of the day. Another favorite part for me is how Dex makes Ashely feel about herself. He makes her feel beautiful, swoon. I just love this hockey team and all the personalities, but Theo will forever own a piece of my heart. This book just proved that even more. This book has the perfect combo of heat, heart, and humor. It is a book that just sucks you right in. The characters had me hooked. I recommend this one!

My only complaint is I wanted more. I didn’t need more, although until I appreciated the epilogue was a bonus I thought I wa a going to cry but Dex and Ashley were such a gorgeous pair along with her daughter Willa that I was just greedy for more. The reformed player/bad boy is never my first choice but Dex’s heart of gold certainly won me over. Ashley was sweet, she didn’t need rescuing although her self esteem certainly needed some polish but nonetheless he was eventually able to step and she had pushed for that, swoon

Dex & Ashley, wow!! Fabulous couple, loved them & this book!! I have read this whole series & it’s been incredible but I think this is my favorite book so far & that’s saying something. There is so much more to Dex than his bad boy image & Ashley doesn’t think enough of herself after her ex-husband destroyed her self esteem, these two truly needed each other. We can’t forget Willa, Ashley’s adorable, quirky daughter that you can’t help love as well. The fact that the story takes place at a shelter with a dog named Bandit tops it off (I get my dogs from the local shelter & had a dog named Bandit🐾💗) along with Willa’s love of butterflies 🦋 (my Mom loved them). These things made the book extra special for me personally. The rest of the Rebels gang is always funny, sweet & entertaining as well. I can’t say enough about Wild Ride & the rest of the series except that you need to read them, you’re truly missing out if you haven’t!! I voluntarily read for an honest review.

I received an ARC from the author

Y'all I loved seeing Dex's transformation from a shallow party boy into a man who thought of others before himself. He has unexpected depths and insecurities that are slowly revealed as the story gets told.

Ashley is a single mom, who had a number done on her self esteem by her cheating ex husband. Seen her and Dex interact was entertaining and a bit heartbreaking as well. Ms Meader navigated the potential minefields so we'll and with care.

I enjoyed everything about this book and especially the bonus epilogue where we see how wlfar both of them have come. If you're into sports romance, kittens and puppies and wonderful found family totally go for this book(and series and author)

Dex’s redemption arc was definitely a highlight. After his journey in the previous book with Tara, it was rewarding to see him grow and evolve. Though I found myself wanting a little more edge and more angst from him—more of that classic bad boy working his way back to good. The emotional payoff just wasn’t as intense as I anticipated.

I liked Ash, especially with her being a little older and a single mum, but I felt like she fell for Dex too quickly, given how much she had to protect with her daughter. I wanted to see more of a chase, and for Dex to work a little harder for her trust and affection.

The Ruby subplot didn’t quite work for me either, particularly Ash’s involvement in meddling with the family dynamic.

That said, the sweet moments were exactly what I love from Meader’s writing, and the relationship between Dex and Willa was absolutely adorable.

More like 3.5. I did enjoy this a lot, I just would have preferred more Dex and Ashley time and a little less Dex and his teammates' time. When those two were together it was so incredibly sweet and real and I just wanted to see more connecting between them. Personal preference!

The one thing that really bothered me was Ash involving herself in Dex and his Mom's business. I get wanting to fix things and being forgiving, but that's a shit ton to forgive and I would have rather she butt out of it.

Had me till the end

I loved most of this book but the last quarter was like a race to an end. We barely got a reconciliation and then the book just stopped. Also, don't force to me sign up for a "bonus epilogue" when there is no included epilogue. The whole thing was super jarring.

Thanks to the author for an ARC of this book. I always enjoy her storytelling, and I often race pell-mell through the story, anxious to enjoy the verbiage, but ultimately, to get to the end. The humor employed is always my style of amusement. This time, I savored it, reading it over the course of three to four days. And when I reached the end, I was disappointed to discover “this is it.” Luckily, she offers an epilogue with a bonus scene if you subscribe to her newsletter—which, of course, I already do. I’ll be reading that forthwith.

I remember Dex O’Malley from previous stories in this series, Rookie Rebels. Even though he’s been a part of the hockey team for two years, he has held himself back from making friendships with his teammates, for reasons that become clear later. Meanwhile, he has placed himself in the middle of one scandal after another, the latest being a fistfight with someone from another team. With an impending court date, the team’s PR team arranges for him to volunteer at a local pet rescue supported by the Rebels, in the hopes the judge will be more lenient with him.

Ashley Adams is one of two paid employees at the shelter. Her boss already scheduled a vacation and will be gone when Dex arrives to volunteer. So, she puts Ashley in charge. Initially, she and Dex do not hit it off, but Dex resolves to change that. Shortly after meeting her, he enters a coffee shop and overhears a man say, “I don’t think men are cut out for monogamy.” Dex is surprised the words came from a man and not a woman. Silence follows the statement. “The reply when it finally came, because a line like that clearly prevented speech for a good ten seconds, knocked him back on his heels: ‘That’s a rather pessimistic statement.’ Spoken by…Ashley.” Unable to help himself, he jumps to insert himself into the conversation, insulting Ashley’s date and inviting her to sit with him instead. A few minutes later, she does.

The relationship starts out tentatively, building a friendship and understanding before leading to romance. “The two of them were acting like safe crackers, turning the dial by fractions and listening for a response that would either click it all into place or doom any chance they had of taking this all the way.” Both are dealing with insecurities. Ashely believes she is unattractive because her ex-husband planted that idea while demanding a divorce because he was screwing the babysitter. Yes, Ashley has a 10-year-old daughter, Willa. Dex’s insecurities are deeper than that. After his mother went to prison, he bounced around from one foster home to another until someone recognized his potential to succeed in hockey. Truthfully, he still never found a “home.” His entire life has been spent moving around, trying to prove his worth as a hockey player, and keeping all relationships on a surface level to avoid the inevitable hurt. He views himself as a trouble-maker and a menace, not truly believing he’s worthy of Ashley. It’s not a surprise when the insecurity both harbor becomes a serious impediment to a real relationship, but their mutual efforts to overcome are a relief.

In the end, Ashley has the self-confidence she’s never felt before, yet always wished to impart to her daughter. And Dex finds he is surrounded by friends and has a ready-made family to love him. Because the narrator is omniscient, we know how both of them feel so there’s not a huge amount of tension that their relationship will ultimately work out.

As an aside, I have to include something that made me laugh. Dex has a neighbor, Georgia, who regularly holds loud parties in her apartment and who is always dressed to the nines. She’s one who goes to clubs, not bars. One night, she shows up at the Empty Net, the bar where the Rebels go to unwind. “Georgia was at the bar’s entrance, looking like she’d walked into the Star Wars cantina and was surprised to see aliens.” Sometimes, it’s amazing how one simple sentence can convey so much about the subject.

This series is sitting pretty on my Top Reads of 2024 list. Every single book in this series has blown me away and I have found a new favorite author to obsess over. Wild Ride was just that...a wild ride of a story that spoke to my heart.

I could gush about Kate Meader's profound writing skills all day long. Her writing voice speaks to me on so many levels. It is like she is writing these books just for me. Her writing is so relatable and her stories draw me in like a moth to a flame. On top of the pleasant writing style, she also kicks some serious hiney when it comes to crafting a top-notch story. Her stories are polished and executed brilliantly. Every single duck is in a row. On top of that, she manages to tell an unpredictable story that keeps the reader locked in and wanting more. So pretty much the whole kit and caboodle.

These characters totally won over my heart. Dex comes off as kind of a manwhore himbo throughout the series but this book paints him in a new light. I fell so hard for his kind, damaged heart. Dex had it rough growing up, to say the least. It was easy to pinpoint the reasons behind the way he acted once you got to know him. Ashley was damaged in a different way but had baggage nonetheless. She was such a strong character even if she kept her heart closed off to protect herself. The character development was phenomenal for both main characters. Their backgrounds were fleshed out extremely well and they had so much depth. The cast of characters in this series makes my heart soar. The squad goals and found family make me so giddy. All of the characters are so distinct and have unique personalities. I love all the different dynamics they have.

Dex may be a former playboy but damn that boy was romantic. I love a reformed playboy trope because they are always such softies for the ladies that capture their hearts. The way that Dex fell in love with Ashley and her daughter was so moving. He doted on them and showed them that he cared with his presence and thoughtful gestures. He pulled out all the stops for them and made them feel special. Dex and Ashley had a connection that jumped off the page. Anytime the two of them were together sparks were flying. And the connection that Dex shared with Willa was also so special and beautiful. He didn't humor her for the sake of doing so. He genuinely liked and cared about her. I loved this coupling so much and all the tropes that accompanied it.

Overall, this book captured my heart with relatable characters, a riveting plot, and brilliant storytelling. I wish that this series could go on and on forever. I am so obsessed with these characters and this world. If you are a fan of hockey romance, this series should be on your shelf. The tease about the characters that star in the next book in this series has me intrigued and I can't wait for more!

"Nothing about you is forgettable and nothing about this should be quick."
This was so sweet that it was hard not to fall in love with every single character in the book. Kate knows how to pull you in and tell a very simple story that is more than just romance. It’s also about learning to trust, overcoming your past, and accepting you’re worthy.

"Ashley turned to face the source of that voice and met the eyes of … okay, not the eyes because he was wearing sunglasses. More like she met The Hair. Gelled and teased to within an inch of its life."
If you’ve been following the Rookie Rebels, you will have met Dex O’Malley before. He comes off as cocky, a playboy who knows how to charm the ladies and can take one home every night. Well, I won’t tell you he’s not all that, but he’s also more.

"Only he had no idea how to approach this. How to win Ashley. And he realized in the moment that he wanted that more than he’d ever wanted anything before."
Ashley was very relatable. She’s doing what she can with her life after a failed marriage and trying to raise a kid mostly on her own. She’s self-conscious about her body, and she’s not looking for good looks or charm, which is why Dex is an inconvenience.

"You just haven’t been laid well in a while, I’m guessing."
"Are you offering?"
"Yes."

Dex needs to clean up his act when it comes to the Rebels after a certain video is leaked to the media. So, as a PR stunt, he’s signed up to work at an animal shelter. I mean, easy, right? Except the lady who runs it is not about to put up with his BS and very much calls him out on it.
She’s not going easy on him, which is different… and he likes it.

"Not bored. Not looking to get my kicks. I am seriously flirting with you. How can you not see that?"
The chemistry between them is undeniable, even though Ashley does her best to stay away. He’d be bad for her and her kid. She needs someone stable—someone who doesn’t care about looks. Plus, he’s younger than she is, so why would he even be into her? But he is.

"Take you somewhere no one can find you and have you all to myself. Not in a creepy abduction way. Just a ‘let me inside you and make you feel special’ way."
Not only that, but Dex wants to prove to her how special she is. How hot and sexy she is, even though she may not be able to see it. They’re so different, but they complement each other. The way he shows up for her and lets her know he’s not walking away made all the difference.

They’re hot together, and they feel right. And while he falls first, she’s right behind him.

"Dex. Breathe."
"Hard to do when you’re so close to me."

Some issues from his past are holding him back. Let’s just say he’s fickle for a reason, and he’s afraid to trust what he has because it can be taken away. And she’s not one-hundred percent into it because she’s been burned before.
It was heartwarming to see how they’re both self-conscious in different ways.

"Don’t joke about this, Ash. I love you and that’s no fucking joke. I love you so much that I’m going out of my mind with it."
I will tell you that he messes up. Big time! But the Rebels are there for him with some pretty awesome advice, the kind only your found family, the people who love you, will give you. You will also find forgiveness in these pages, along with some seriously cute groveling.

"Just look at the camera and think about us, in your seats. In your corner. We’ll always be there."
Their story felt real to me. Yes, he’s a hockey player, and she’s a regular single mom, but what they have, they couldn’t have with anyone else. They are, and will always be, in each other’s corners. And that was the beauty of this wild ride for me.

WILD RIDE is the eight instalment in Kate Meader’s contemporary, adult ROOKIE REBELS erotic, hockey romance series- a spin off from the author’s CHICAGO REBELS series. This is twenty-five year old hockey player Dex O’Malley, and thirty year old single mother/ animal shelter manager Ashley Adam’s story line. WILD RIDE can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Any important information from the previous story lines is revealed where necessary.

Told from omniscient dual third person perspectives (Ashley and Dex) WILD RIDE follows in the wake of a PR nightmare for Dex O’Malley, and the Chicago Rebels. Dex O’Malley is the proverbial bad boy and his latest stunt has landed him with a suspension, an injury and possible jail time but ‘volunteering’ at a local no-kill shelter finds Dex up close and personal with his future in the guise of single mother Ashley Adams. Ashley is the manager of the local animal shelter and wants nothing to do with Dex and his reputation both on and off the ice but as Dex slowly winds his way around Ashley’s heart, their mutual issues of trust and low self-esteem begin to take a toll on their growing relationship. What ensues is the building romance and relationship between Dex and Ashley, and the potential fall-out when Dex struggles with Ashley’s attempts to uncover the truth about his past.

The world building focuses on issues from the past; Dex’s career and probable jail time for assault, and the growing love Dex has for Ashley, and her daughter Willa.

The relationship between Dex and Ashley begins acrimoniously as Dex is forced to volunteer in an effort to clean up his reputation. Falling for Ashley was never in the equation but Dex finds himself falling for a woman that will break his heart. The $ex scenes are intimate and passionate without the use of over the top, sexually graphic language and text.

There is a large ensemble cast of colorful, familiar and antagonizing secondary and supporting characters including several of the previous story line couples, management and friends. We are introduced to Ashley’s ex husband Greg, and their daughter Willa.

WILD RIDE is a story of secrets and lies, struggle and betrayal, family and friendships, acceptance and love. The premise is intriguing and captivating; the slow building romance is seductive and energetic; the characters are broken, determined and charismatic.

I so loved Wild Ride it was a fun read. So much happens within the story that you will feel by the end both happy and emotionally drained. It's a wonderful combination and why I love reading romance stories.

Dex is a bit of a pain in the butt. He is always getting into trouble even when it's for a good reason. The funny part is that his childhood really shaped his life and actions. You can't help by the end of the book understanding more about him and feeling a bit bad for him. Luckly, he has people in his life that he can now count on and a new beginning to get over past sadness.

I also really like Ashley and understand why she's a bit stiff with men. She's been burned supper badly and deserves to be pissed. He ex is a, well use your imagination. I can honestly say I dislike him very much and it's sad that she will forever be connected to him through her daughter.

From the beginning I liked these two together. He treated her well and made her laugh and feel young and attractive something her ex ruined for her. At first, she thinks of him as only what is learned in the news but slowly realizes that there is more to Dex then anyone knows. She helps him pull out the real Dex and show the world that man. While Dex taught her what a beautiful person she is inside and out.

There are many touching parts in the story and then there are some very funny parts also. You'll love how Dex treats her daughter. It's cute that even when they aren't talking, he keeps up with her daughter and doesn't ghost her because he and her mom is having issues. Makes you love him even more. I will tell you that there is a part in the book that cracked me up. It's when she's at the coffee shop and he comes in and sees her there. I won't say more but you'll know what I'm talking about when you read it. So funny.

Wild Ride by Kate Meader, book eight in the Rookie Rebels series, is an emotional, intriguing, opposites attract, single mom, bad boy, hockey romance. Dex O’Malley is a player both on and off the ice, and this time he has gotten himself into hot water that could see him kicked off the team. With his hockey career on the line his PA and the team come up with a way for him to rehabilitate his image, and what better way than to volunteer at an animal shelter. This is so not what Dex had in mind but he without any other choice he goes along in the hope the boss will let him take some photos and be on his way.

Shelter manager and single mom Ashley Adams has enough on her plate without having to indulge new volunteer Dex; especially after he gets bitten on his first shift. If she can deal with her nine year old Willa she can deal with Dex. What follows is an entertaining, heartwarming story about a mom, her daughter Willa who loves everything about butterfly’s, a dog called Bandit and a hockey player finding himself and love. For her part, Ashley is wary about taking this five years younger hockey player at face value. She’s been burned by her ex, and wants to protect her daughter at all costs. As Ashley and Dex are forced to spend more together, Ashley doesn’t believe that Dex’s flirting is genuine; that she just happens to be a convenient woman to have around while he’s cleaning up his act. I love the way how easily he shows Ashley and her daughter how important they really are, and how much he likes spending time with them.

I loved everything about this book, I smiled, giggled, laughed out loud, but most of all I fell hard and fast for Dex and Ashley, but it was Willa who really stole my heart. Bandit, the rescue, showed Dex unconditional love and helped him grow. As with all of Meader’s hockey books, the found family of teammates who have each other’s back is there; stronger. I especially loved how the guys encouraged Dex to go after what he wants. What started out as a fling suddenly becomes a whole lot more. I look forward to the next book in this series.

Wild Ride is another great hockey romance from Kate Meader. If you are a fan of opposites attract, forced proximity and a charming himbo, read this book!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Hockey player Dex is having a rough time with his, well, media coverage. First there was that NSFW video from a club, then the fake engagement, and now hitting another player off the ice. His team thinks he needs to rehabilitate his image, and what better way than to volunteer at an animal shelter? Shelter manager and single mom Ashley has enough on her plate without having to coddle new volunteer Dex. Especially after he gets bitten on his first shift. But as the two are forced to spend more together, can she believe that Dex’s flirting is genuine? Or is she just a convenient woman to have around while he’s cleaning up his act?

If you are a fan of a romance himbo, you’ll love Dex’s story. He knows he’s a little clueless, but as the book goes along he definitely develops more self awareness. And as much as he seems to struggle with interpersonal relationships, I love the way he easily shows Ashley and her daughter how cool they really are, and how much he likes spending time with them.

For her part, Ashley is realistically apprehensive about taking this 5 years younger hockey player at face value. She’s been burned by her ex, and wants to protect her daughter at all costs.

As with all of Meader’s hockey books, the found family of teammates is top notch. My favorite parts are when the guys encourage Dex to go after what he wants. And while Wild Ride is part of the Rookie Rebels series, Dex and Ashley’s story easily works as a standalone.

Wild Ride is a fun, entertaining hockey romance. Dex is one of my new favorite himbos; if you are a fan of heroes who might not be super bright, but are absolutely gone for their love interest, read this book.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advance copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Absolutely loved!

I've been dying for Dex to have a story since Tara and Fitz's book, and I am happy to report, he did not disappoint!

Dex and Ashley's story was a freaking delight from start to finish--the troublemaking hockey bad boy who falls for the single mom? Yes, please! Shelter pets with actual personalities (and not just because of the labels sprinkled throughout the book, like
Blu
Domestic short-haired cat
Likes: Playing with the toilet roll
Dislikes: The Patriarchy
though they certainly didn't hurt!) and a kid who feels like an actual little person, not a plot moppet? Tell me more!

Add in the fact that Dex is (of course!) far more complex than the tabloids and hockey talking heads will have you think, and Ashley and Willa might just be the start to the family that he never thought he deserved, and I don't know about you, but I'm sold.

And oh, yes--there's also a healthy dose of steam in there to keep things interesting for everyone.

Wild Ride, like the rest of the Rookie Rebels books, can absolutely be read as a standalone. But in order to really appreciate how much Dex needs this HEA--not to mention seeing how all of his teammates who are living their own HEAs (the ones Dex is secretly getting kind of jealous of, even though it takes him a while to figure it out) got to theirs, do yourself a favor and read them all!

Earlyish on I was fairly certain that Banks' story was going to be next, and I was ready for it. Then a certain scene occurred, and now I AM READY FOR IT.

Is it September yet??? ;)

Rating: 4 1/2 stars / A

Hockey star Dex O’Malley lived with emotional scars that no amount of acting out could cover up or ignore. Animal shelter worker and single mom Ashley Adam battled everyday with her self-esteem and the rough hands life dealt to her. Dex was charming and often presented a flippant attitude to cover up the heart of a man who cared deeply. Ashley spent everyday expressing how much she cared by her actions.

Caring drew this couple together from empathetic non-judgmental shoulders to lean on to being aware of others' pain from friends, family and animals. Adding a very strong physical attraction to this scenario and this pair were better matched than they were aware of. Dex and Ashley both wanted to belong to someone, to be important and take precedence in someone's life and not be an afterthought or overlooked. Kindness was this couple's love language. Fun flirty dialog and serious introspection balanced each other out in this work.

The Rookie Rebels is a great series with memorable dimensional characters worth dedicating time and emotions in. Kate Meader's characters see with their eyes as well as their hearts. This author gives meaning to people finding both inner and outer beauty to suit their own unique needs as her portrayals move past superficial into real and relevant. Kate Meader's Wild Ride adds another wonderful Rookie Rebel story to the series!

This is where I admit I have most of the earlier Rookie Rebels books but haven’t yet read them….. so yeah, picking a book late in the series is very much me!!!

I loved Dexter & Ashley (& Willa!!)
There was so much personal growth in this story - for all 3 of them - and it was fabulous to read.

Dex had so much emotional baggage from how he grew up and then seeing his past in his present, it would be a lot to deal with for anyone never mind a guy who still hadn’t made any kind of peace with his past and held on to some sense of misplaced guilt.

Ashley broke my heart a little. She was awesome but couldn’t see it as she’d had Willa young, kinda grew up with her daughter, was in a marriage that neither party was really invested in and when it ended her ex said some pretty horrible things. This lass needed someone who ‘saw her’ and thought she was as awesome as she was….. enter Dex!

Their initial meeting didn’t go so well but in all honesty, Dex needed someone like Ash who wouldn’t let him do what he wanted and who didn’t feed his ego. She made him think about his actions and their consequences!

Willa, oh sweet little Willa. She was a wee sweetheart and I understood how Dex fell for her as hard as he did for her momma. Willa was an older soul in little girl form but was so good and caring. She saw the good in Dex and wasn’t afraid to tell him what she believed.

This was a really great read. I felt fully invested in these three becoming a family - Along with Dexter’s teammates, their families and Dexter’s remaining family.

I’m definitely gonna be going back to read the rest of the players stories.

Another great addition to the Rookie Rebels series!

Dex O'Malley is the bad boy, the troublemaker, and loner of the Rookie Rebels. His latest escapade has him in a lot of trouble with the law, the team, the league, and the public. He knows that this is probably his last chance to get his act together or he will lose everything. The PR for the Rebels sets him up to be a volunteer at a local rescue where he gives a bad first impression to Ashley, who will be supervising him and reporting to the court.

Ashley is a recently divorced, single mom who is temporarily in charge at the rescue and not looking forward to supervising the young, headline-making hockey player. She has just signed up to a dating site to help jumpstart her lack of a love life, even though, and the last thing she needs is for her body to be reacting to Dex the way it is.

Dex is immediately attracted to Ashley, but she thinks he is exactly who he's set out to make everyone believe he is and she'll never go for him. Until he overhears how badly Ashley's app date is going and steps in, followed by him eavesdropping on a conversation she's having with her friends about needing to have "a little fun," and he decides he's just the guy to give it to her. What comes next is a series of flirting and lessons in not letting your past dictate who you are (for Dex) and not letting words from an ex continue to haunt you and make you insecure (for Ashley).

I really had my doubts about Dex and how he could possibly redeem himself, but, much like Ashley, I was able to fall in love with who he ACTUALLY was and not who he presented himself to be. I resonated with Ashley and her insecurities, not for the same reasons, and really appreciated how Dex constantly reassured her that her ex was an idiot and that she was beautiful and sexy. I adore the relationship between Dex and Ashley's 9-year-old daughter, Willa, and the finicky rescue dog, Bandit. I especially enjoyed how the rest of the Rebels stepped in to make sure Dex knew he could be a part of them and guided him in all things love and friendship.

I'm excited for the next book, *Hockey Wife*, based on what we read about Banks and Georgia in this one!

✨Review Highlights✨
- Bad boy hocky player meets single mom
- Many animal side kicks
- Good writing
- Good pacing
- Likeable characters
- Good story

I borrowed this book from my Libby Library and I really enjoyed it. I have had a great time reading this series and I think that this one is one of my favorite stories because most of it takes place at an animal shelter, and I am a lover of all things animal. Also I love that in this story the MMC is on a journey of self discovery that was very enlightening. Him discovering that the person that he truly is and is happy being is so different then what and who he was portraying himself to be was an interesting journey to go on with him. Sometimes in life we have the moments of discovery of "oh maybe I'm not that" and we end up on the other side of that a better version of ourselves and I just loved seeing that in this book.

I really enjoyed the self discoveries that both the main characters went through in this book. I felt like they both grew throughout the story, and while growing closer together they also grew as individual people and became not only a better couple but better people by the end of it.

I enjoyed this story and the writing, I thought the pacing was really good and I just loved all the animals. I loved that there was so many similarities to Dex and Bandit throughout the book, and I loved that the building of trust in that relationship was also a pretty big part of this story.

I would recommend this book, its cute and fun and also has a lot of emotion and heart put into it.

Just when I think I can’t love this series (or this author) any more, she comes at me with an irresistible grump like Dex O’Malley and – stick a fork in me – I’m fully in love.

I adored Dex and Ashley’s story. I loved the banter, and the slow, simmery way that they evolved from unimpressed strangers, to friends, to more. The romance was absolute perfection, but y’all. It was Dex’s relationship with Ashley’s daughter that finished me. My heart! Their sweet budding relationship was an absolute delight to read and I fell so head over heels for him.

This guy.

I can’t.

**furiously fans self**

He was so perfectly written, with just the right combination of grit, tenderness, and depth. Paired with Ashley – who was fighting her own demons and showing us all what a strong, smart, resilient and lovable heroine looks like? Lord almighty. It doesn’t get any better than this.

Of course, Kate Meader delivered on the hallmarks of any good hockey romance as well: the bromance. These lovable galoots showed up in spades, and I reveled in their antics and the way they inevitably brought Dex into their fold. I love the Rookie Rebels, team dynamics and I don’t think I’ll ever tire of coming back to this well of awesomeness.

Wild Ride was a heartfelt, adorable, deliciously sparky slow burn that swept me away. I adored every minute of this story and this series remains one of my favorite hockey romance series of all time. Read it! ~ Shelly, 5 Stars

Wild Ride is the next book in Kate Meader’s Rookie Rebels series and it was everything I love in a Kate Meader Hockey Romance! It’s a fun, sexy romp with a bad boy hockey player, an overworked single mom, an adorable array of rescue pets, a precocious daughter and cameos from Vadim Petrov and Theo!!!

Dex O’Malley has made some bad decisions in his off-ice life so now he has to do some image PR, the Rebels assign him to the Ashely’s animal rescue. After a disastrous meet cute that Dex gets bitten by traumatized pooch, Bandit, they have to work together so he can get out of legal trouble, become a better team player and she can move on from her disastrous divorce.

I laughed out out and kicked my feet in glee reading Dex and Ashley’s book! I love an older heroine, single mom that gets completely adored by a younger hottie. Dex could have been a vapid f-boy but Kate Meader gave him a heartbreaking backstory that he has to overcome. I loved Vadim Petrov giving his advice, Theo adding his commentary and how Dex befriends the cantankerous Bandit. Add in some classic Meader steam with a few good girls and Wild Ride is a fantastic addition to the Rookie Rebels Universe!

The set up for the next book left me counting down to the next one.

Thank you to the author for an E- ARC in exchange for an honest review, all thoughts are my own. Wild Ride has a publish date of March 26, 2024.
