The hippie yoga surfer FMC annoyed the F out of me. Starting this book out with a brain dead boyfriend and having the FMC time travel to medieval times, landing in the midst of an Anglo Saxon battle, and falling into a warrior who, ironically, is a doppelgänger of her brain dead boyfriend is wild. This is her second chance to save the man she loves- except it’s a different man.
Cheating 🤔 but not cheating because her boyfriend is halfway to dead is a new low in a story plot.
So while her present day boyfriend is lying in a hospital bed in a coma.. she is f*cking a medieval guy that is his doppelgänger.
I’m not 100% against cheating plots - like let’s be real - I love Outlander- where we see a time travel romance there as well. But this plot was wild.
I love the time period and the Anglo Saxon details (even tho this is 100% not a deep historical fiction dive) but the 2019 surfer girl, yoga instructor, vegan wearing a hot pink wetsuit inside medieval times was a Hard No for me. Unrelatable FMC. I barely could stand to read about her- tainting the entire story.
And a Viking warrior doing yoga. 🤮 Where is the masculinity? I need a feral primitive man.
Viking's Claim A Viking Time Travel Romance Mariah Stone ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Previously published as The Surf of Time
Cathy is a yoga instructor who loves to surf. Her fiance Brad is in a coma with no chance of any brain activity. Something that Cathy finds very hard to accept. She decides to clear her mind and feel like she's closer to Brad, so she goes surfing. But when a strange woman appears in the water beside her and hands her a golden spindle, the vegan yoga teacher is tossed into the sea of time and emerges many hundreds of years back in time on an English shore in 878 AD, right in the middle of a battle between the Anglo-Saxons and the Vikings. With one Viking who looks exactly like Brad.
Andor is a Viking warrior who is devastated over the fact that his wife died, thinking it's his fault because he could not protect her. He's more than ready for his time on earth to end when a beautiful Valkyrie in a pink wet suit (something he's never seen before) comes to take him to Valhalla. The only thing is, why does she keep calling him Brad?
Cathy is desperate to get back home before Brad's parents get the court order, allowing them to disconnect his life support so she convinces this grumpy Viking to take her to York, where she hopes to be able to return to the twenty-first century. Andor needs her help, so he grudgingly agrees with one condition, and that is that he will not protect her.
Along their journey, that is fraud with the dangers of the time they will escape pagans that are hungry for a sacrifice and outwit the English army together, the two grow closer and closer. But when passion flares between them, will it be Andor or Brad who holds Cathy's heart?
Once again, Mariah Stone is absolutely incredible. She knows exactly what her readers are looking for and gives it to them. I was hooked from the minute I opened this book and started reading until the last word was read. The characters were absolutely perfect together. This was a great book, and I would recommend it to Viking and time travel lovers everywhere.
Andor was a hard character to like because he was so hard, and on the verge of mean. Cathy was so kind and patient. These two needed each other and even time couldn’t keep them apart.
Viking's Claim is book 2 in Mariah Stone's Called by a Viking time travel romance series, which can be read as standalone books. I am totally in love with this series, it's official, mostly due to Stone's writing styles and how she dealt with the time travel aspect of the plot. Let me tell you how relieved I am I don't have to read a book where the 21st century heroine is somehow fluent in ancient languages of the British Isles or Scandinavia - I've read time travel stories like that and that is where I usually just go "nope". I love history/archaeology, so it is great that I can read this book and see the detail and research that Mariah Stone has put into the world building of this series. It's at a really interesting time, about 80 years after the Lindisfarne raid, but the local Saxons and Vikings are fighting, while there is a rich culture with their old gods, Christianity is starting to dominate Europe.
Cathy is the Californian vegan yoga instructor who is flung back in time by a golden relic, a spindle, given to her by a mysterious witch/Norn. Andor is the fierce Viking warrior that she encounters (and looks like her comatose fiance in the 21st century).
I spotted hallmarks of inspiration from Diana Gabaldon's Outlander series, and though Brad and Andor are outright said to be ancestors, the physical similarities really does make me think of the Frank/Black Jack connection in Outlander. Or I think of a quote from a Doctor Who episode (cue me googling to find this): "Ah. Thought so. Spatial genetic multiplicity. It’s a funny old world". OK my nerd moment is over, back to the review.
Cathy and Andor are interesting characters and their development was really satisfying to read as the progress through medieval England continues. The character development, main characters maturing and coming to terms with their demons was something that I loved from book 1. I was so happy to realise that this just might be something I can now expect from Mariah Stone books.
Andor is a gruff Viking warrior, he has lost his first wife to an attack and has felt the guilt of his decisions that led to her death (not his fault in the least) deeply. He is strong physically and when it comes to the art of war, and raiding, but he needs to process his emotions so that after three years, he can finally move on.
I will admit that I was a little reticent with this book. Some time travelling females can be really frustrating in how they refuse to evolve and adapt with their surroundings. Maybe it is me being Australian, but I was really concerned that our Californian surfer heroine was really going to be a pain in my butt. Luckily, that was not something I needed to worry about either. Cathy is strong, intelligent and is very empathetic, the latter is both her strength and her downfall, and I enjoyed how Cathy was able to turn everything into her strength. She is a born survivor.

Wonderful addition to the series once you begin it’s impossible to put down Los Angeles 2019 and Cath is at a crossroads with her fiancé Brad that has been held captive in a coma for over a year, his parents are going to allow her two weeks before they fight her in court for their right to overrule his decision to give her the choices of life over his parents even though they are not legally married. As she contemplates the upcoming fight riding his surfboard on the waves, she finds herself transported in to the year 878 AD and no longer in LA, she is now in the county of Wessex in the middle of a battle where she spies Brad, he is a Viking but she would know him anywhere and she finds herself once again fighting to keep him alive. Andor Thornsson had not believed the woman who appeared before him like the Valkyrie she had looked as strong as a shield mountain he had taught her to handle a sword and then over time had found himself beginning to care for her, they had started a relationship and both of them had developed deep feelings for each other. Cathy had known that he was still suffering from the loss of his wife and the guilt he’d felt on discovering her and his village decimated whilst he’d retrieved a bible arriving home later than promised. As they face bandits and other perilous dangers on their travel to York she is constantly aware that she may arrive home too late for her Brad who may already have died, will she ever find love and happiness again or will she have lost this by leaving Andor behind returning only to an empty hospital bed and a heart that would be forever broken in a time where there was now nothing left for her. Even her own parents and her sister had made her feel like a duck out of water, the ugly duckling that had never fitted in until she had been found by her one and only love……. I voluntarily received and review an Advanced Reader Copy I thoroughly enjoyed the book and look forward to reading any future publications; keep up all the great writing. I assure you that you will love every moment of this book it is simply a fantastic read. Cathy lives in L.A, California and at the time of the story's beginning, she is in a sad place. Her fiance Brad had an accident a year ago, and has been in a coma ever since. Brad's parents show up to inform Cathy that it is time to pull the plug, that Brad is not coming back. She runs away from them, to the beach where her and Brad were planning to open a Yoga Studio/Surf Shop. The norn is there waiting for her, to send her on a journey through space and time. Cathy ends up appearing in the middle of a battle in her hot pink wet suit.
Andor saw the Valkyrie appear, but she's in the way! Cathy is so distracting, Andor ends up getting knocked out and Cathy drags him to safety. When he wakes up, Cathy is totally honest with him and tells him where she is from. Andor agrees to help her travel to another spellcaster so Cathy can get back to her ailing fiance.
Cathy ends up falling for Andor, and I am not quite sure how I feel about that. I think the author intended for Andor to be a device to let go of Brad, but it just... I don't know... I kept thinking I don't care if Andor looks like Brad... wish Cathy would have let go of Brad before she tripped back in time. I don't think she cheated, exactly, Brad was brain dead... she needed to let that poor man go.
Andor and his ghosts made me cry. Since Andor was a few weeks late coming back from battle, the enemy saw this as a chance to slaughter Andor's settlement, including his wife. Andor blamed himself, and when he put the sword to his throat asking Svana's father to kill him, it was definitely emotion evoking.
As for the relationship, it just happened too quickly... like, you man, me woman, we fit together. But I did like how Cathy trained to be a shieldmaiden. Also, Cathy was depicted as a tall girl and not "a slip of a thing" which I enjoyed.
Such a wonderful written story. I love the way the author has pulled one into the story. Cathy hasn’t given up, her fiancé Brad has been in a coma for a year. His parents are ready to let Brad go, there has been no improvement and actually he has gotten worse. But Cathy can’t come to grip with their decision and take off to Brad’s favorite beach to ponder life while sitting on a surfboard. Hoping to be able to find Brad’s spirit or the essence of him. Suddenly there is a older woman next to her on a surfboard. She tells Cathy that there is a man she needs to save. She procures a golden spindle and holds it out to Cathy. As Cathy touches it she is sucked into the past, in the middle of a battle between Vikings and Saxons in her hot pink wetsuit. She runs for cover and finds a small cave to hide in. There is blood and bodies all around, this was real! It a Hollywood movie. When a Viking is wounded near her she drags him into her hiding place. Brad? It definitely looks like him. Andor has lost the love of his life and had gotten his revenge, but can’t live with the guilt of her death. Fighting one battle after another amassing wealth he sends it to his in-laws to help absolve his guilt. It doesn’t work! Wounded and awaiting the death blow the warrior is called away. He wakes up with a monk tending his wounds. How did he get in the enemy’s hands? He sees the woman from the battle, she is calling him Brad? Confused and battling his ghosts and guilt is enough, but now the woman wants him to return her home to the future. I received a complimentary copy of this book. Viking's Claim had great elements that all came together for me to make a gripping and enjoyable read. This time travel romance is packed with action, angst, steamy passion and soul crushing regrets to overcome. Both modern Cathy and Andor, her melancholy Viking raider, have overwhelming sadness and regrets attached to their previous partners. The story of how they aid each other and develop an ever deeper relationship as they make their way through hostile territory in medieval Britain is great stuff. The sad backstories for Cathy's surfer boyfriend Brad and Andor's wife Svana were really touching and fully explained Cathy's and Andor's reluctance to commit themselves to someone new. The last few chapters did a fantastic job wrapping up all of their stories in a happy and hopeful way.
While it leant the story some originality, I could not get interested in the parts of the story dwelling on yoga. For me, the story would have been better and tighter with a bit less of it (and more realistic, though I realize that time travel is not exactly a grounded in reality trope!)
Still, I love this era in history and the romance was well-written with characters I really cared about. This was not the favorite of the books I have read by Mariah Stone, but she spins a good yarn!
I read a complimentary advance copy of the book; this is my voluntary and honest opinion.
Another great time travel story! I love this series. This is Andor and Cathy's story and begins with both of them suffering loss and guilt. Andors wife Svana and part of his village are killed due to a raid by a neighboring jarl while he was away. He comes back from a trip and finds Svana dying and part of the village in flames and blames himself for being away too long. Cathy's fiance Brad is about to be pulled off of life support by his parents after an accident. Cathy's fiance Brad was a surfer and Cathy went to the water to surf in an effort to feel closer to his spirit. While surfing she meets one of the fates (a norn) who hands her a golden spindle that sends her back in time to 878 during a battle between the Saxons and Vikings. There she finds Andor who is the spitting image of Brad. He is badly injured and she drags him to a hiding spot and in essence saves his life. Throughout the story there is danger in the form of the Saxons. During the time they are together they grow closer but each harbors their own burden of guilt and self doubts. Will they finally be able to put these destructive emotions behind them so they can move on and build a life together or will the pain they hold onto destroy any chance of a happy future they might have. I suggest you pick this one up if you want to find out!.

This book is the second in this series & is also my second book by this author. I love anything Viking & let me tell you that this book didn’t disappoint! This is Cathy & Agnor’s story. She’s a modern Cali girl & he’s a Viking Jarl warrior from the 9th century. The love of her life is Brad who is a world class surfer. She just loves to surf. She has body confidence issues that he’s showing her how to work through & with yoga. He’s had a TBI & hasn’t regained consciousness in months & his parents want her to pull the plug. She’s his appointed designee to carry out his advanced directive. She disagrees with his parents. Surfing is her way of dealing with the pain & stress of the situation. She meets a norn (Nordic version of one of the Grecian fates) while contemplating said situation & looking for Brad since he’s "gone”. She’s told by the norn that Brad doesn’t need her but that a Viking does. The next thing she knows, she arrives in a beach in Devon back in the 9th century & meets a hot AF Viking that’s a dead ringer for Brad but more muscular & he has a short beard. To say that what they endure, teach each other, & find in each other is a saga for the ages. I adored the ending. Talk about a HEA! I’m happily onto the next book! I highly recommend this series! I still say que (I spell it this way for a reason) "Immigrant Song” by the one & only Led Zeppelin! It seemed apropos…
This is Book 2 in the series, and all are apparently loosely based on actual historical events and real people. I am liking this series so far and know I will enjoy books 3 - 5 when I read those.

Great read. Lots of emotions. Another great story in this Called By A Viking series sees Andor and Cathy brought together through the passage of time. Cathy, appearing just as a battle is starting in Devon 878AD is terrified and runs for cover. Shocked to see a man who looks like her fiancé being hurt and possibly killed she saves him and drags him to safety. There the adventure begins. Cathy learns that even though this man may look like her Brad from the future he is not at all as kind hearted as him. Andor, having loved and lost has hardened his heart and will not let anyone in. Once healed from his battle wounds they head off for York and Andor’s people. There is much danger along the way and they find themselves repeatedly in and out of trouble. Loved the storyline which was emotional at times and the characters. From starting out lonely and uncertain Cathy soon became a confident, brave warrior woman. Andor was gruff and grumpy on the surface trying to keep himself from caring about anyone. Blaming himself for the tragedies that had befallen his wife and clan. Cathy’s sweet and loving nature however slowly seeps into his heart. Can’t wait any longer… On to book three in the series.
A time travel adventure from 2019 to 878 A.D., Cathy is at the hospital Brad her boyfriend is on life support and his parents want to have it removed its been so long and he has so little brain activity. Cathy is so upset she goes to the ocean and takes her board out not to surf but just to sit and think but she meets an old woman when she thought she was alone the woman tells her there is a man waiting for her and needs her in another time she doesn't believe it until she finds herself standing in the middle of a battle field between the Vikings and the Saxons. There is danger everywhere but when Andor sees her standing there in a pink wet suit he thinks she is a Valkyrie. But it seems Andor is attracted to her she on the other hand thinks that Brad is running around with a sword in hand fighting other men dressed strangely to. When she calls him Brad he tells her that he is not Brad and then he gets knocked out by a Saxon soldier and she hides in a cave but she drags Andor in the cave with her. Then adventure begins and Cathy ends going back to her own time because she has to and Andor acts like he doesn't want her. I enjoyed the story line and characters kept you turning pages.
Andor Thornsson is Jarl of Hvaldalen, Norway, year 875. His wife and most of the village are killed/ burned. He blames himself for this and takes those of his village to Ubba Ragnarsson and leaves them there except for the men he takes with him and they to Wessex to fight with Ubba in Bretland. Cathy is from LA in 2019, her fiancée, Brad, was injured and has been in a coma for a year. She has power of attorney, not his parents and that causes problems between them. Once again the Norn, Ms Verdandi, makes an appearance and sends Cathy back in time. Andor looks exactly like Brad, so she saves him from the battlefield and gets him treated for his wounds. So many misunderstandings occur because when Andor wakes he is angry. He is still blaming himself for everything.
Reading about battle tactics of the Vikings was cool. Cathy and Andor travel to York which is where the next Viking commander is. A lot happens along the way. A lot. I love this book and I’m already reading the next one. Sooooo cool.

Cathy’s fiancé, Brad, has spent the last year in a coma, and now his parents want to pull the plug. Cathy meets an older woman while surfing, and then finds herself in the 9th century with Andor, a man who looks just like Brad and is fighting his own demons. Andor cannot forgive himself for not being home in time to prevent the death of his wife. Now he is stuck in enemy territory with this chatterbox from the future. Despite his best efforts, he finds himself attracted to Cathy, and that adds to his guilt. They spend the next couple of weeks saving each other from one disaster after another, until they finally reach a town which has what she needs to return home. This story will tug at your heartstrings and keep you on your toes, as you never know what they will stumble into next. Each one of them must work through heartache and guilt, and learn to forgive themselves. The push/pull between them is palpable and it is easy to get wraped up in their drama. Having a 9th century warrior do yoga is genius and brings to mind the dancing hippos from Fantasia.

Cathy has waited a year for her fiancé Brad, to wake up from a coma, but his parents are ready to let him go. She decides to go out in the surf to feel closer to him and meets an old lady. Andor wears his guilt at not being home when a rival Jarl attacked his home, killing his wife, like a cloak of thorns. He is bitter at life and lives to serve his King sending his gold and silver to his deceased wife’s parents. During a battle a woman falls at his feel wearing bright pink armour. The shock of this gives the Saxons the benefit and they win the battle. Andor is knocked out, vulnerable to attack. Cathy finds herself thrust back in time and in the middle of a battle to see a Brad look alike fall down about to be killed. She intervenes and drags him into a cave for safety. So begins their tumultuous relationship. Although Andor keeps pushing Cathy away she doesn’t give up on him. They are both torn by their past, his guilt and her determination to get back to Brad at any cost. This is another excellent book to the series, and I loved reading it from start to finish. I received this as an ARC and I am leaving an honest review.

I really enjoyed the love story between Andor and Cathy in the book. The author delves into some deep themes such as overcoming past traumas, self-forgiveness, and knowing when it's time to let go. Both Andor and Cathy struggle with their own personal demons as they fall in love with each other.

Andor carries a heavy burden of guilt for not being home when a rival Jarl attacked, resulting in the death of his wife. He is bitter towards life and serves his King by sending gold and silver to his in-laws.
Overall, I was captivated by the fast-paced story and found myself engrossed in the plot until the very end. I was given a complimentary advance review copy, and I am choosing to write this review on my own accord.
Viking's Claim poses an interesting question: can honoring the memory of a spouse be a sign of guilt as well as loyalty? Viking Andor's wife was killed in a raid and he blames himself for not being present to protect her. Cathy's fiancé is in a year-long coma after she prevails on him to leave his friends and join her in a new business venture. Both characters feel loyalty to the memory of their beloved and find it difficult to move on with their own lives and accept the possibility of finding love with someone new. Each one feels guilty for having created a situation that hurt their partner. Ultimately, both Cathy and Andor come to realize that hindsight IS 20-20 and past decisions must become learning experiences to propel one into a new way of thinking rather than anchoring a person in the past and reliving mistakes in judgement. It's a pretty good lesson for both the 9th and the 21st century. Enjoyed the characters and watching how the tension between was going to be resolved.

Cathy is a yoga instructor from California whose surf champion fiance has been in a year-long coma when she is thrust back into the 9th century and meets his lookalike, Andor, in the middle of a Viking battle. Andor is injured and Cathy pulls him into a cave for safety, but he is anything but grateful for her help, blaming her for the death of his men and loss of battle. Andor is also living a life of regret after losing his wife, Svana, right before said battle. Of all the books in the Called by a Viking series (which are standalones and not too interconnected), I liked this one the least. It was cute but I'm not a big subscriber to the whole California/vegan/surf lifestyle so it was a little boring to me. Andor was also a bit too much on the harsh side when it came to the "grumpy" trope and had little redeeming qualities compared to other characters in this series. The book held my interest, however, I recommend others in the series more.

I have read some other books in this series, and I find this one a worthy addition to it. I quite enjoyed Andor and Cathy’s love story. The author explored some serious themes, like letting go of a painful past, self-forgiveness, and when to let someone go. The prologue pulled me right into the story, and I couldn't help but feel empathy for the hero for what he suffered. While this book definitely has some heavy moments for both of the main characters, it also has a fair amount of humor. I especially enjoyed the running gag about the Vikings and yoga! I thought both of the main characters were well-drawn, and their motivations and fears were understandable. All in all, I thought this was a well-written story.
I received a free copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.
Cathy’s fiancé is in a coma and has been for a year. His parents want to switch the life support off but Cathy won’t let them. Then she goes surfing and meets an old woman who gives her a golden spindle and says a Viking needs her help. Cathy ends up on a beach in 870 while a battle is going on. There she finds Andor a Viking injured. She hides him until she sees monks come to collect the injured. She removes his armour and sword and hides the sword. She tell the monks he is mute so they don’t find out he’s a Viking. The young monk know who he is but helps them. When they leave they find the sword gone. They have there adventure getting to York first Cathy is captured and Andor save her. I’m not going to spoil the rest only to say I couldn’t put it down. I received a free copy for an honest review which I have given
This series has become a guilty pleasure for me. The book goes pretty much the same as the first: a woman who feels lost in the modern world is sent to the past for a specific viking and ends up falling in love, woman goes back to her time to get closure, still misses her viking so finds a way back. Still enjoyable and with different a plot and issues for them to face. There's still an element of insta love, although this one was more believable as the Viking looked like someone from back home, so it was more like insta attraction. I did like how in this book the characters got to know each other more before giving in to their desires. But I did have an issue with them having sex when they were dirty from the road, not sure how she can smell like flowers when she washed once in the whole 3 weeks on the road.
Surfs up in bygone years. With her fiance, Brad in a coma and his parents wanting to pull the plug, letting go of the man she loves is the hardest thing Cathy will ever do. Even being transported in time in a hot pink wetsuit from the surf of Los Angeles to the shores of Wessex between two battling hordes is easier. Then she discovers the spitting image of Brad in the visage of a wounded Viking. As time unfolds, she'll have to question herself often on whether what she feels for Andor is real or if she is only transferring the love she feels for Brad onto him. Andor doesn't make things easy with his cruel words and standoffishness. How can he feel anything for this woman while he lives at the mercy of the ghosts that haunt him? Both Andor and Cathy fall helplessly in love while battling their inner demons. This story gave me the feels and induced a few tears. A great read!
I’d finished Mariah’s previous novel in this series (A Viking’s Desire) and while I truly enjoyed that novel I complained about missing some details about major plot points (such as how the FMC returned back to the MMC). Well, I’d love to say the Mariah heeded my constructive criticisms and incorporated them into this novel but that would be false. Mariah wrote this second novel long before fore my criticism hit her inbox and yet she managed to write exactly the second novel that I thought she could. This is a rich, vibrant novel without a couple of the plot leaps that annoyed me in the first of the series.
This is a fully realized HR with the time travel and Viking tropes. Both the FMC and MMC are complex, enjoyable characters who push through their own self doubts to find happiness with each other. Highly recommended!
