Swimming Against the Tide

Zach

I wanted what I thought was the ideal college experience—an excellent school and a great fraternity. Since I was a legacy, it was Zeta from the get-go. I’d be lying if I said I didn’t enjoy it. In fact, I had so much fun I didn’t pay enough attention to one very important thing—the culture. The very conservative, closed-minded culture. The culture that welcomed no one who wasn’t a carbon copy of everyone else. The culture where a gay man has only one live in the closet and survive on occasional anonymous hookups.

I made it work until I saw a gorgeous guy jump into the bushes one night after a party. I went after him, and my life was never the same.

Connor

After my best friend ditched me at a frat party, I had nothing to do but drink away the time and wait for my own Prince Frat Bro to rescue me. Yeah, right. I was pretty sure I was the only gay guy there, and I finally gave up and left. Then, the night took an interesting turn on my walk home.

I guess you can’t find love when you beat around the bushes.

Swimming Against the Tide is a romance between two very different young a closeted frat bro sophomore and an out-and-proud freshman. Neither can resist the connection made at the most awkward, incredibly sweet, and impossible-to-forget meet-cute ever. How can they get what they want without being swept away by the tide?

This gay college romance features themes of Greek life, a secret relationship, undeniable chemistry, and steamy moments full of delightfully dirty talk. There are also tough decisions, coming out, and an HEA that will pull at your heartstrings every time you read it.

This is erotica. FWB with a closeted guy. I liked the cover, it was the only reason I read it loll. I’m not a fan of the too much sexualisation at first sight and the insta lust. It was very sexual even though it was only the beginning, which might be enjoyable to some, but just straight up not my cuppa. I did contemplate dnfing this, but kinda glad I didn’t.

The story picked up at 50%. I think the scenes afterwards were romantic and the closeted trope was done pretty well. Even though I expected a bit of angst, it turns out really easy and sweet. There was understanding and empathy from both sides, and everything just got cuter and cuter, I liked that.

I do have to admit the sex scenes dialogues were a bit cringe but didn’t care too much.

Swimming Against The Tide tells the story of Zach, a young man feeling trapped in a closeted world where he keeps his sexuality a secret while fearing his truth becoming known to his fraternity. Having to pretend to be 'a brother' in a homophobic setting is getting to be torture. But when he meets Connor, someone who he wants to be with, who ticks all of his boxes as far as a boyfriend should be, he feels the walls caving in.

Zach's inner torment was so sensitively written so that found myself dreading his times with his frat boys and their comments. Connor's understanding and support was beautiful to witness.

Taylor and Harwood excel when it comes to making us feel the inner torments of their characters and then can then make us absolutely rejoice in their happiness.
Another winner and ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ from me!❤️

I loved this one!! You really can’t go wrong with a Ryan & Josh book, they’re all so wonderful, but this one hit me with the sweet and emotional writing.

This book is a little longer than your typical novella, but not quite novel-length, and we get the best of both worlds: a faster moving plot AND all the sweetness and build of the emotional connection between the main characters. We have Zach, a closeted college sophomore art student who is in a fraternity – which is part of the reason why he’s still closeted – and Connor, an out freshman education major. They first meet in the most adorably awkward way and quickly become friends, which turns into a friends-with-benefits situation, which then of course turns into something even more.

I love the way Ryan & Josh write their two main characters. I believe in their romance as it builds. Some of the things the characters experience and think about, both together and separately, resonated with me on a deeper emotional level – though not because I may have experienced those things myself, but because of the caliber of writing by the authors. I didn’t want this book to end!

Some of the tropes in this one:
-College students
-Greek Life
-Closeted MC
-Adorably awkward meet-cute
-Friends with Benefits
-Dirty talk
-Sweetly emotional and also perfectly spicy!

This was a cute, quick novella. I loved the no-so-cute meet cute between Connor and Zach, but I wish the book would have been longer to flesh out more of the building-up of their relationship. Things moved very quickly, and it almost didn't feel believable at times. I loved watching Zach learn to do what is best for him and not what others want him to do, and he and Connor were very cute together. There is a good bit of homophobia in this one, so please take note of that before reading.

This was cute but didn’t leave a lasting impression on me beyond: FWB to lovers & homophobic frat boys. I enjoyed the relationship development but staying in the frat didn’t make sense to me and then his dad was pretty immediately accepting so there was no real drama.

Spicy and fluffy, this will definitely work for lots of people but it just didn’t for me.

College set stories are my absolute favorite and I really enjoyed Connor and Zach’s story. They were both adorable and the attraction and chemistry between them was evident from their first meeting and they made a super cute couple.

With the premise of the story, Zach being closeted, this could have been a difficult path for Zach and Connor, but all in all, the story had very little angst.

The story is told from dual POV’s and as a collaboration, the authors’ writing worked well together. My only complaint is this story takes place over a very short period of time and I wish the authors had stretched the timeline out a bit. Still, this was an enjoyable read that I’d have no issues recommending.

This was really bad. Cringe, even. If it weren't for all the sex, I'd have thought I was reading a story assignment from 8th grade. Or maybe the screenplay for one of those badly acted, terribly written TLA movies. Either way, this insta love story of a closeted guy who risks it all for the love of a proudly out dude has no character development and no shown personalities other than the one fratty homophobic asshole. The plot is decent but with poor execution it's a chore to plow through.

Everything felt so easy between Connor and Zach and when it's the two of them behind closed doors they are electric. The attraction was visible from their first encounter and even when they just plan on talking, they can't resist each other. The dirty talk was definitely something and added steam to the story. The intimate scenes were amazing and you could feel the raw emotions. However, despite the relationship being easy, this is anything but. Zach isn't just in the closet, he's still the timber in a forest, no where near resembling a closet. He feels the weight everywhere, pressured by his Frat, his friends and his father to conform. His friends think they know him but they have no idea. His pain is his burden. Trapped by his worry of disappointing his father and being forced to choose between silence or his heart; his love for his art and his love for men. Connor is his freedom, he can be his true self. There is some angst in terms of homophobia and hate speech and also when Zach goes quiet on Connor, but the last few chapters are just joyous and I am so glad Zach and Connor found each other. We get an epilogue, but these guys are still young students so we can only hope that they have a happy life ahead of them. We are teased at the end that we may come across them again, it would be anazing to hear how they are getting on. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

I loved this book by Ryan & Josh, this was such a wonderful book with all the sweet & emotional writing.
Zach was a closeted college guy, who is in frat which is one of the reasons he is still closeted. He has these occasional hookup scenes going on in secret and plans on being in the closet till graduation. Now here comes Connor, a freshman who he stumbles upon in bushes during one of his frat parties; their meet was so cute & awkward at the same time. They had this instant connection & it felt so good to read it.
Zach & Connor decide to be friends-with-benefits but with their increasing feelings for each other, it seems impossible for them to move forward without falling for each other. But Zach is still in the closet, with his frat brothers being homophobic assholes he feels his anxiety grow every second he stays in the frat house & he also doesn't want Connor to go back in the closet for him. I loved how Zach confronted his frat brothers & said his feelings, the scene was so perfectly written by Ryan & Josh I loved every part of it. I liked how Zach & Connor cared about each other & found their happily ever after. They were the cutest characters & this book was such a wonderful read.

Adorable love story of two college students, Zach and Connor, one closeted, the other out and proud.
They meet after a frat party, Zach helps Connor (who drank too much) and something sparkles between them. They meet again the day after and from that moment, they're cannot stay apart.
Their connection is instant and, consideing the lenght of this book, everything happens quite quickly: they say they're just friends with benefits, but they cared so much about each other and start developing feelings (Zach showing his artworks to Connor was beautiful).
Their biggest issue is that not only Zach is in the closet, but also is part of a conservative homophobic fraternity.
I really loved how Connor never pressured Zach to come out and how brave Zach was, trying to figure out his life, his coming out and his separation from the fraternity (his "brothers were all awful, except for Jeff, I really wish he will have his own book).
Recommended if you're looking for a fluffy, adorable love story with low angst.

I received an ARC from the authors and this is my honest review

Tropes: friends with benefits to lovers
Feels: 2.5/5
Steam*: 3.5/5
Kinks: none
Angst: low
HEA: yes
Pairing: MM
Triggers/potential icks: homophobia, dangerous frat behavior

Zach is a closeted member of a frat. He's studying art. Connor is out, hasn't had much luck with relationships, hookups have used him before. They meet at a frat party and are interested. Zach isn't sure if he needs a friend or a hookup more with Connor, but when Connor offers FWB, Zach isn't going to turn it down. Zach isn't happy with his life, his frat brothers are homophobic and he doesn't want to hide forever, and if he wants more with Connor, he can't expect him to hide.

This is novella length, so it doesn't dive too deep into things. By novella standards, it wasn't bad as a light read.

However, I did think this story was told a bit superficially. Everything that happened was told in words, not feelings. I kind of wish the authors showed us rather than told us things. Other authors would show us what the characters were feeling/thinking in small ways, like eye contact, breath catching/hitching, being unable to resist touching/snuggling. There's a way to write in a sensual, emotion-evoking way and that was missing. This novella was just words and character action. Maybe the authors' style would come across differently in a full size book.

I did like that it jumped forward a bit of time at the end. It made up a little bit for it being a novella, that we got to see a little bit more into the future.

*FYI, I rate steam based on a combination of quality & quantity. I note kink separate from steam because I don't want to underrate steamy reads that don't have much kink."

This is a super sweet, low angst, college romance between Connor and Zach.

Connor, an out gay freshman, and Zach, a closeted sophomore frat brother, have an awkward meet cute one night when Connor had too much to drink. But that doesn’t stop the instant attraction between the two from happening.

After that awkward first night, Zach and Connor spend more and more time together and Zach realizes that he can’t keep living the way he’s living. Especially with his bigoted frat bros being so homophobic and misogynistic and the pressures from his frat brother father. He feels stuck in this life, but wants to come out on his terms.

Connor is the sweetest golden retriever and I just wanted to give him a hug. He’s there for Zach and doesn’t pressure him to come out, when most others would.

This is a quick read, but totally worth it if you are looking for an adorable read of two people who come to adore each other.

I was lucky enough to receive an arc of this book. Zach and Connor were just so sweet. Connor was just so supportive and accepting of Zach still being closeted and I loved that. I was so sad for him, being in that fraternity and feeling like he was trapped for the remainder of his college career. I can’t say much else without giving spoilers. But if you want a short, sweet read with a little spicy time and a guaranteed HEA, this is the book for you! Well done, guys!

There's a lot going on in this short but emotionally charged college story. Connor and Zach lead very different lives. Connor is out, studying early years education and is free to be himself. Zach is part of the Zeta Greek house, is closeted and keeps that part of himself hidden from everyone. When Zach walks a very drunk Connor home after a Zeta party, both feel a strong attraction.
Friends with benefits is a great way for them both to get what they want whilst also keeping Zach's secret but my heart hurt for him with the things he hears his homophobic Greek brothers saying and the way they treat others. It's a battle for him through a lot of the book about doing what's right for him, being safe and happy. Connor becomes a big part of that and I love the easy relationship they build so quickly. Comfortable in each other's company and crazy hot together most of the time, they have fun whilst also talking and being supportive. The story only takes place over a couple of weeks or so but you can feel how much they come to mean to each other. I
A wonderful story that has a great relationship but some hard times with occasional homophobic language and talk of bullying. Another well written story with lovable characters and good plot development.
I received an ARC and am happily giving a review.

Swimming against the Tide is the new standalone by Ryan Tylor and Joshua Harwood. I loved it. It is a sweet college romance with some dirty talk, sexy scenes and two guys crazy for each other. If I have to put a “but” is that it was too short. I would like to have read more about Zach and Connor.

Zach is a closeted college sophomore. He’s a bro at the Zeta fraternity as his father had been previously. It’s a very conservative fraternity and Zach has to hide his true self. He suffers because of the pressure of not disappointing his father or his frat brothers, who are truly homophobic bigots.

He’s an awesome artist and it’s through his art that he can express his emotions and his most hidden fears and feelings.

Connor is a freshman, he’s out-and-proud. He’s free to be his true self and he cares a lot about Zach.

Zach and Connor had an instant attraction in spite of their awkward first meeting. They cannot be apart from each other and they agree to have a secret relationship because of Zach’s circumstances. They have a strong connection and their relationship is sweet and adorable.

Connor never pressures Zach to come out. Eventually Zach realises that what he’s doing is not living, and he wants to change it. I valued his courage in his coming out and when abandoning the frat. He was really brave.

As for the side characters, Jeff is a nice guy, he’s the only frat bro who stood by Zach. I would like him to have a book.

I love Ryan and Josh’s books. They write believable characters who grow inside you and find a place in your heart from where they don’t want to leave. They keep you company and don’t want to be forgotten. I often need to reread their stories to keep them feeling alive.

This is a low angst, college romance, with some tough moments but with a heartwarming HEA. I have enjoyed this book and I highly recommend it.

I have enjoyed the hockey stories by these authors so I was happy to give this book a try. And I am glad that I did. This a sweet story that I enjoyed. The length is just a bit over a novella. A nice length for an afternoon read. This is the story of Connor and Zach. The two meet at a frat party when Connor is leaving. Connor is an openly gay student. He isn't with a fraternity and is close with his family. Zach on the other hand is a legacy so he was accepted into his father's old fraternity Zeta. Zach likes the idea of of bonding and becoming brothers. Of supporting each other. Right up until it runs into the wall of closeed minds and anti gay behaviour and thoughts. Since Zach is gay, he immediately steps into the closet and nails the door shut. Until he runs into Connor. Connor who supports him with no pressure or ultimatums. He allows Zach to come into his own and stand up for what he believes in. Zach finally decides that he is tired of the bigotry and starts swimming against the tide. I really enjoyed the relationship that Zach and Connor had. I loved all the support and love that Connor gives to Zach. And I have to say that I loved the status of the Zeta that is explained in the ending. This is a well written book that is easy to read. A great way to spend an afternoon.

I received a free copy of this book from the authors and am voluntarily leaving a review.

A FRIENDS WITH BENEFITS LOVE STORY!

I absolutely adored their meet-cute and decision made after but as a reader you can read between the lines , especially when you have both characters point of view which I love!

Their dynamic started out as friends with benefits as their connection and attraction was far too strong to just be friends but could it turn to something more real and permanent?

Unfortunately Zach is still in the closet and his frat brothers are anything but open minded regarding this issue and his father’s pressure to stay in the fraternity but maybe with the guidance of a sweet, sunshiny and out and proud “friend” Zach will stop swimming against the tide and embrace and dive into the world he craves for…

They were just so cute together and had so many interests in common not to mention the hot chemistry between them, they just fit together like puzzle pieces but the issue of Zack being in the closet could become a major obstacle in their way….

I voluntarily received an ARC copy from the authors and Forward PR for my honest opinion on this book.

🏳️‍🌈 COURAGE~ LOVE~ COMPASSION 🏳️‍🌈

Ryan and Josh are remarkable story tellers, but wow they have really outdone themselves with this one! This story is a tribute to those who’ve had the courage to stand up to those who seem intent on tearing them down. Both Zach and Connor triumphed over their tormentors by living an authentically happy life. This story mostly focuses on Connor’s journey of coming out. However, it is evident that Zach’s steadfast support, coupled with his own poignant past experiences, empowers Conner to take control of his life. In the process, Zach and Connor fall hopelessly in love with each other, and I couldn’t help but fall in love with them. This is a feel good story with loads of sweetness, humor, and heat! This book left me with with a full heart and permanent smile on my face.

One of those coming of age stories that just resonates with you and sticks. Connor who is openly out and himself one night meets Zach a forced to stay in the closet frat boy. With the support of Connor, Zach is able to build turn courage to leave his toxic frat house to become his true self. These two have a romance you hope for anyone struggling to be their true self.
A great story with in depth characters that I hope we get to see revisit in future books from Ryan and Joshua.

Swimming Against The Tide drew me in from the very beginning.
A wonderfully written college romance where Connor meets Zach most unconventionally!
As the story unfolds you get to see into their lives which for Zach isn’t what it seems.
Unfortunately for Zach, he can’t divulge his secret that has his stomach in knots, only with Connor can he be truthful.
Connor, hugely confident in his skin is a lifesaver to Zach.
Impeccable writing had me thoroughly invested in this wonderfully emotional story, an easy 5 stars from me.

I really loved this frat boy/coming out college story! It had fluff, spice, a meet cute gone wrong, dirty talk, and a spotlight on social justice — all in the same story!

Zach is a frat pledge, destined to remain quietly in the closet while he’s still part of the fraternity his father is pressuring him to stay in, despite it being clearly bigoted and toxic. Too afraid to go against his parents, he remains in it but only living half a life.

Then he meets Collin, an out and proud gay man who sets Zach’s heart on fire. Their chemistry is off the charts from the start and they at first agree to a friends-with-benefits situation that quickly escalates to something more once they realize how much they have in common past their chemistry. There’s a real chance for more here…if only Zach is brave enough to take it.

I really loved this book! Honestly, no complaints, no areas I felt could be improved. It delivers on what it promises and then some. If you’re wanting a fluffy/steamy story with a little bit of social justice against misogyny and homophobia, this is your book.

I received a complimentary ARC for my honest thoughts.

Love Zach and Connor.

This story was once again well written by the author duo of Ryan Taylor and Joshua Harwood.

I especially loved Zach and Connor's very awkward, yet sweet meet-cute.

I also loved how very supportive Connor was with Zach, who is a Zeta legacy, and had some tough decisions to make.

I highly recommend this book especially if you're new to the authors' books.

Different but so good

I've only read the hockey romances from these authors so trying something new by them was a chance to see them outside this. I am aware they have other non hockey books but haven't read them yet

This book even though deals with some heavy interactions also has some nice light moments. It was well written and kept me from wanting to put it down.

This novella tells a sweet, low angst story between Connor and Zach, but also tells Zach's emotional struggle with being true to himself or staying in the homophobic frat house he joined and having to hide for the rest of his time at college.

I really liked both MCs a great deal and I enjoyed their instant connection and hoped that Zach would be strong enough to leave the frat house and pursue a relationship out in the open with Connor. I thought Connor was understanding about Zach's situation, but he knew he didn't want to be in a long-term relationship that would involve him not being able to be with his boyfriend in public.

Most of the guys in the frat came across as ass****s and I struggle to understand the mentality behind their behaviours. I was glad that Zach found his inner strength to be true to himself before it became an even more toxic environment for him to live in.

Swimming Against the Tide

Another beautiful story from the husband &husband team of Ryan Taylor and Joshua Harwood. Oh man, can these two tell the most beautiful stories. Connor and Zach are just so sweet together. Their meeting wasn’t perfect, but it was still just the way it was meant to happen. Love with heart, steamy scenes and a beautifully written ending. I hope we see these two characters again to see hope happy they are together and married with a magical family.
