Crystal Jordan is an award-winning author of paranormal and futuristic romance. She has published over 50 books, both independently as well as with publishers such as Harlequin and Kensington Books. When not writing, she works as an academic librarian at a university on the California coast.
Selina Grayson is an elf and she is over four hundred years old. She has done everything she has ever wanted to do in her long life. She has been married, widowed, had several careers and has seen the world. For a year now, she has known that her death is impending. All Magickals have a life span of approximately five hundred years, but that is not why her time is up. Selina’s ex partner, Merek, has seen her death in a premonition. It is really too bad she has finally started to live again.
From the moment Selina agreed to have a one night stand with Jack Laramie, her very existence started to change. He is a human in the same boat as Selina; neither of them wants to form a bond with the other. Their attitude to keep it “friends with benefits” goes well beyond them being partners to solve a crime. They both have tragic pasts that are painful and better left buried.
Someone is killing Magickals and Normals. Selina and Jack are in a race to find the killer before he/she strikes again. As the case they are working on heats up so does their passion. The secrets they have kept buried begin to surface and they must work through their problems to solve the crime and their inevitable infatuation with each other. Can they change fate or is Selina’s death going to ruin their future?
First off let me say Night Games can be read as a standalone but is also considered book two in the Night series. You will find the first “couple” of the series mentioned in this story. If you are interested in Chloe and Merek’s story, be sure to pick up book one, Embrace the Night.
I have warm and fuzzy feelings about Night Games. I had the same outlook when I read Embrace the Night. There is just something about the series that was delightfully natural. I know it’s an odd word to use for an erotic romance novel, but it just works. The writing is smooth and easy to follow. The story is well told and the characters are fun to interact with. Ms. Jordan wrote a captivating novel that is relaxing, sexy, and engaging. She did a remarkable job not revealing any of the plot secrets. I was on pins and needles and had some suspicions about the identity of the killer, but I was wrong. Perfect execution!
Though Night Games is considered an Erotic Romance, I didn’t find it too erotic. It is a very hot romance with well placed and steamy scenes, but not overly explicit. If you are looking for blush worthy scenes I think you may be disappointed, but I do have to say this couple sizzled and burned up the pages.
Night Games has it all; an amazing plot, enjoyable characters, a bewildering mystery, a touch of action and scorching sex scenes. Her world building is believable and very consistent. She makes you wish you were a part of their universe. So grab this great effortless read and take a breather from the craziness of life.
Selena Grayson is a Seattle cop and an elf that is centuries old. She’s reaching the end of her very long life, but if her former partner’s vision comes true, the end will come years sooner than is natural.
Special Agent Jack Laramie is one of the few Normals working for the FBI’s Magickal Crimes Unit. The strictest decree in the Magickal world is Normals can’t know about Magickals, but Jack’s mom married a werewolf and then his mom became one, too. Jack opted to stay human after his stepdad offered to turn him, but after a stint in the Marines he decided to join the FBI’s MCU to help protect humans and Magickals alike.
When a serial killer comes to town with a grudge against those connected to Magickals and an M.O. the same as a case Selena worked years ago in New Orleans, the Seattle PD loans her to the Jack’s unit. However, Selena is hiding some very important personal info about the 30-yr-old case. As she and Jack engage in a no strings affair while working on the case, how far will it go before the truth comes out? Will Jack be able to forgive her? Will Selena survive even though her death on this case has been predicted by the most powerful seer alive? Is Fate really out of our hands?
This was a great story with an interesting plot and excellent pacing. The characters were rich and well-developed and I love the world in which they live. So why 3 bites instead of 4? Because it is a pet peeve of mine that when a person serves in the United States Marine Corps they are henceforth known for all time as Marines. It is the Corps, not the corps and it is Marine not marine. A Marine is one of the Few and the Proud and marine has something to do with the ocean or sea. Marines are also not soldiers. Soldiers are Army. Marines are Marines. As a wife, mother, cousin and sister-in-law to Marines I have to say I react badly when reading a book and finding these mistakes. It wasn’t once or twice it was multiple times. Since Jack and his dad were in the Marines their background was mentioned many times. Someone down the line should have caught the mistakes and corrected them. Am I being too harsh? Every mistake I read grated on my nerves and since I feel what I feel, that’s how I’m rating the book.
Otherwise, this book is a great read. In future reprints I hope they fix the errors I pointed out. Just a side note: I don't like the cover. Selena looks like she's eating Jack's nose.
*Many thanks to Kensington for providing me with a review copy. Please see disclaimer page on my blog.
Selina Grayson is a cop with the Seattle P.D. and part of Seattle’s Magickal Task Force. She is in the wedding party of her partner Merek. Being this dressed up makes her uncomfortable. Most her lovers were older magickals like herself; they didn’t like to deal with the dating crap. Selina is a 440-yea-old Elf.
Jack usually the only normal in the room full of magickals. He’s been recruited by the FBI Magickal Crime Unit. When he is sitting at the bar, Selina feels a need to go up to him. They both feel the sexual pull. Jack Laramie is a normal and oddly, Selina could care less. She takes Jack home for a one-night stand.
When they end up working on a serial killer case together, one night becomes something more. When they find out the killer likes men like Jack, Selina will do anything to protect the man she considers hers.
Night Games by Crystal Jordan is the second in the Night series and is not a stand-alone book. Selina starts out right away in the middle of drama with coworkers and magickal love pairings. At first I felt like I was missing vital pieces of information, but then I just concentrated on Selina and was much better off.
Selina is a 440 year old Elf. She doesn’t believe in long lasting love. She has loved once and lost big time; she never wants that to happen again. So Jack has his work cut out for him to get into her heart. Jack is a normal but he has been around Magickals all his life; after all even his mom is a converted vampire. When he falls for Selina, he gives her time and patience as much as a macho normal male can. I liked his spirit and passionate nature.
I liked everyone introduced in this book. I’m glad this is part of a series here because I want some of the secondary characters to have their stories next. I know for sure I will be looking for Ms. Jordan’s works in the future.
Night Games by Crystal Jordan Paranormal Romance –Feb. 28th, 2012 4 stars
Night Games is the second book in the authors Night series about a long lived elf named Selina Grayson who is a cop with the Seattle P.D.. The first book was Embrace the Night, which features Selina’s ex partner Merek. It is not necessary to have read the first book to enjoy Night Games.
Selina is confident in herself and dreading attending the wedding of her ex partner Merek. Merek has left the P.D. and joined the FBI Magical Crimes Unit. At the wedding, Selina meets one of Merek co-workers, a startlingly gorgeous and very human Jack Laramie. Their attraction is instant and scorching. Soon they find themselves hot and heavy! But complications arise when they find themselves assigned to work together on a black magic case. This case is personal as it reminds Selina of the murder of her dear cousin. The killer was never found and Selina is driven to find the murderer, even if it kills her.
The main characters have a great chemistry and a real emotional connection. Although there is a lot of time spent on the case, most of the action is between the two main characters, especially in the bedroom. The scenes between them are blazing hot! Those who love steamy reads that are a little kinky will definitely be satisfied. I also liked the author’s writing style. It is easy and fast to read. Paranormal fans will enjoy the various characters and the world the author has created has plenty of room for more magical creatures and mysteries.
Night Games is a super sexy, quick read that paranormal fans will love.

A world where Normals and Magickals live together. The Normals may not know about the Magickals but they are there. It's become such a way of life that there are separate agencies and hospital floors for the Magickals. They don't always live in harmony and that's when Selina Grayson and Jack Laramie come into play. Selina is an elf. Jack is a normal. Jack is with the FBI Magickal Crimes Unit. He gives a unique perspective to the unit. Selina is with the local police department. Together they are searching for the person who is killing Magickals and Normals who know about the Magickals. Who would do such a vile thing. How will they catch the person? This isn't his first killing and unless they catch him it won't be his last. Along the way, Selina and Jack find they have a magical chemistry all their own. They are strong separately but together, they are combustible. How will they handle their magic and the murder cases?
The love story in this book is so well incorporated it seems natural. It's not an added dimension but an element of the complete story. You can put yourself in the place of Selina or Jack and understand where the feelings come from. The book also makes it seem perfectly plausible that Magickals and Humans (Normals) coexist. I found it to be spicy, intriguing and a touch scary. You will really be missing out on a terrific book if you don't read this one. *warning, you may want to keep the ice handy for the heat in this one (smile)
I didn't find anything wrong. A love story. Magic. Humans. It's all here. You can't ask for more.
Selina is a fae on the Magickal unit of the Seattle PD. Jack is a "Normal" in the Magickal unit of the FBI. They have a hot one-night stand after a wedding, and that's all they plan on. But they end up working on a case together. The case is personal for Selina in a couple of ways, however she decides to keep that from Jack. In the meantime, their one-night stand is blossoming into something more than that while they try to catch a serial killer. Will Selina's decision to keep her secrets put their blossoming relationship--and their case--in jeopardy?
I really liked Jack--he made a great hero. He was sexy and strong, yet vulnerable when it came to Selina. A very good combination.
I liked the first book better, but this wasn't bad. Selina is a centuries old elf, and a cop in Seattle. She's called in to work a case she knows will kill her, a serial killer with a personal connection she couldn't stop as a rookie. She's paired with Jack, the hot human FBI agent she slept with the night before after Chloe and Merek's wedding.
There's major heat between them, but the timing is all wrong so things are supposed to stay casual - and, course, don't.
Really enjoyed the second book in this series. Lots of angst, lots of hot sex, nice world-building, believable HEA. Happy sigh. Many characters from the first book were nicely incorporated into this volume - always a bonus.
I'm looking forward to the next book in this series. Please announce it, Ms. Jordan.
