Kelly Haven, Mommy Knows Best (Sweet Nothings, 2011)

Another “we'll get around the OMGINCEST thing by putting 'step-' in front of every familial reference” piece, and I have to admit, I do take that into account when reading; if you're going to write it, at least have the cojones to stand up for it, rather than changing it to fit into Amazon's arbitrary and eminently stupis rule so you can make a little more cash. Not that the author of this particular travesty should. It's generic porn where the familial aspect is supposed to add spice (or “transgressiveness” if you're a hipster, I guess), but without the author having done anything to justify that spice other than slap labels on the characters. You know when the teacher said “show, don't tell?” Here's a prime example. This story has three one-dimensional, interchangeable characters (“interchangeable” save one has breasts and two do not), and, in the way of far too much porn, we know just enough about them to give our imaginations bare details to run with. That's annoying when the author is writing a scene that is, in fact, generic, and just giving us cup sizes and jockstrap meaurements. But here—where the entire story turns on us needing more than “stepmother” and “stepsons” as labels in order for us to buy the line that haven is attempting to feed us—it causes the collapse, pretty much, of any possibility of this even managing to be decent one-handed reading material. Try again. Once more—with feeling. * ½
